Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on November 23, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

I suppose Barack Obama wanted to offer this as an “I feel your pain” moment, but the problem is that he actually doesn’t — and won’t.  At a press conference in Lisbon last week, Obama tried to mollify anger over the new, intrusive TSA searches at airports by asserting that they are inconvenient indeed … and apparently so even for those special few who never have to deal with TSA:

One of the most frustrating aspects of this fight against terrorism is that it has created a whole security apparatus around us that causes a huge inconvenience for all of us.

All of us?  Not exactly, as Obama admits in his prefacing remarks, not unless the Secret Service gives Obama the TSA treatment before getting on Air Force One.  No wonder he’s occasionally late for his flight.

Got an  Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the  Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Of course it’s inconvenient for him, too. It causes the rabble to question his authority…

apostic on November 23, 2010 at 8:14 AM

If he really “understood people’s frustration” he’d resign and take “plugs” and “stretch” with him.

50sGuy on November 23, 2010 at 8:16 AM

This is the Obama version of ‘triangulation’.

Skandia Recluse on November 23, 2010 at 8:18 AM

I recognized that comment as an amateur version of leadership when I first heard it. Of course Obama never gets patted down. And it’s silly of him to try to express some kind of shared frustration, when it’s obvious he’s not experiencing it. A more mature leader would have sent a calm, reassuring message that the greater good was being realized (less terrorist potential), and would have saved the debate about tactics for a later time. No leader should try to be empathic about circumstances they don’t share. It’s amateurish in its obviousness.

Bigurn on November 23, 2010 at 8:19 AM

If The Won had gone through that sort of an intrusive search before the election, there’s a better than even chance he’d have never been elected.

Crusader Rabbit on November 23, 2010 at 8:21 AM

The platitudes about “us” and “we” making “sacrifices” are bunk and he knows it. But he can’t help himself. It’s who he is. He’s a BS addict.

That was a rousing endorsement and explanation of the necessity of the new procedures, wasn’t it?

Question:

Is this groping and screening, Obowma’s way to slowly bleed the airline industry of passengers to appease the environmental nuts and to force us to use pogo sticks rather than jet fuel?

It sure fits his MO.

dthorny on November 23, 2010 at 8:40 AM

Just the usual BS from the same guy who says we all must tighten our belts during these tough economic times and share in the sacrifice — while he and his family burn through millions of our tax dollars taking multiple vacations in plush luxury resorts and throwing weekly, spare-no-expense parties for themselves and their friends in the White House.

NaCly dog on November 23, 2010 at 8:32 AM

Boehner didn’t, or so I hear.

A real leader would direct that the TSA policies make sense, which would include giving extra search time to Muslims and anyone who has ever traveled to any terror supporting country.

terrorism is that it has created a whole security apparatus around us that causes a huge inconvenience for all of us.

Oh, so terrorism created this porn video grope fest.
Not you, Incompetano and the slugs at the TSA.

Actually I think you are in the terrorism biz, since it offers another crisis opportunity that opens the door for more government control and over reach as the only possible solution.

This is not about safety or security since so far 0% terrorists caught, 100% innocent civilians assaulted and no muslims inconvenienced.

Don’t interrupt him. He’s busy getting a mani-pedi while waiting for a freshly cooked gourmet breakfast to be delivered to his room. Then it is off to a luxurious spa for a haircut and body wax. Following that, he will hit the links for the rest of the day…. Maybe take in a few hoops with Reggie Luv.

I still think that O’s crack about diverting AF-1 to Venezuela on his way back from Europe takes the cake. Even Chavez responded favorably to this blatant insult.

onlineanalyst on November 23, 2010 at 9:04 AM

To be fair to the president, the new TSA procedures probably do affect him. And if the press would just film him reading those angry letters from people who have been mandhandled, darn it, we would all realize it.

“First, let me make a confession… I don’t go through security to get on planes these days?”

Really, Barack? Why not?!?

Because your the President of the United States?

Getoutahere! When did that happen?

I’m so happy for you. Wow! That is quite an honor! You must be one helluva guy, because you’re the President of the United States, and we’re not!

B.O.’s attitude reminds me of that line from Mel Brooks “History Of The World, PT 1″:

Count: Your Majesty, the peasants are revolting!

King: You bet! They stink on ice!

He’s using the royal “all”, of course. Which means, “all of us, except me, you peasants”.

What a buffoon Mr. President has become. It’s to the point where he makes a ridiculous statement every time someone give him a microphone. George Bush wanted the country to be safe and he never resorted to treating US citizens like criminals.

scalleywag on November 23, 2010 at 9:57 AM

Stones, and glass houses just don’t work well together now, do they Mr.Obutthead?!

I seem to recall Bush serving out his presidency, and the scrutiny on passengers never, NEVER got this bad. Why is a thread today any different then the threats that came in, when Bush was in charge?

I’ll tell you. Obutthead is at the helm now.

capejasmine on November 23, 2010 at 10:16 AM

The real amateurism of this Obama statement is that he showed his Kerry-ism – i.e.

Equate (fighting) terrorism on the same level as an inconvenience, and that is what is frustrating to him.

Not good for a CinC with two wars on his hands, and definitely not good for THE leader of the free world.

How much longer must we be faced with this idiocy? How much longer must we stare the answer right in the face and ignore it? It’s way bigger than the elephant in the room.

Why is it such a problem to look for the people most likely to commit a crime?

If they have a problem with it, then they can help stop it.

This dancing around the idea of profiling is moronic. Terrorists must be laughing their collective a$$es off at how stupid we’ve become.

Of the last 20 terrorists attacks anywhere – how many have been committed by nuns? 4 year old children? 80 year old grandmothers? Thought so.

Can we stop being completely insane please?

Pablo Snooze on November 23, 2010 at 11:25 AM

Obama won’t submit to airport groping because he’s afraid the TSA won’t find anything down there.

Steve Z on November 23, 2010 at 11:29 AM

I think the Obamateurism of the day should have been “in this war of terrorism”.

Seems like he forgot about all those memos and letters:

*DOD memo noted “this administration prefers to avoid using the term ‘Long War’ or ‘Global War on Terror’ [GWOT.] Please use ‘Overseas Contingency Operation.’

* International Commission of Jurists urged Obama to drop the phrase “war on terror.” The term had given the Bush administration “spurious justification to a range of human rights and humanitarian law violations,” including detention practices and interrogation methods that the International Committee of the Red Cross has described as torture.

* Center for a New American Security (DC defense policy think tank): “Our strategy should be to divide and conquer rather than make of enemies more than they are,” “We are facing a number of different insurgencies around the globe — some have local causes, some of them are transnational. Viewing them all through one lens distorts the picture and magnifies the enemy.”

and saving the best for last:
While Janet Napolitano presumes there is always a threat from terrorism: “I referred to “man-caused” disasters. That is perhaps only a nuance, but it demonstrates that we want to move away from the politics of fear toward a policy of being prepared for all risks that can occur.”

Politics of Fear = Obama

Only in America could the child of a communist, womanizing, alcoholic, and a woman of questionable morals, become a success (becoming a President) story. The elitism is ALL his, and it’s pretentious. His insecurity comes from knowing he’ll never be, what he desires to be.
