Huckabee: It’s time for Obama to send the first family through TSA’s new screening

posted at 12:42 pm on November 23, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via Greg Hengler, why not? Why not at least send them through the scanner, just as a PSA to remind passengers that they can skip the junk-touching if they’re willing to stand in front of the machine for a few seconds? Frankly, I’m surprised that The One hasn’t already mobilized Napolitano and TSA chief John Pistole to be scanned in full view of TV cameras to help calm passengers’ nerves, as Villaraigosa had the good political sense to do yesterday at LAX. After all, the backlash to the backlash is now in full swing, with loyal liberals loudly proclaiming that their junk is here for the touching. Seize the moment, Barry! Now’s the time for a little proactive “messaging” — if only to distract people from the whining by White House aides about how frustrated they are with the public’s grumbling.

As for Huck’s insistence that strip-or-grope is unconstitutional, the truth is a bit more nuanced. See this primer from CBS on how courts balance protections against unreasonable searches with the special security needs of airports. They can’t do anything they like to you, but as long as they’re being no more intrusive than necessary — and arguably, per the Abdulmutallab plot, checking people’s junk is now necessary — then they’re probably safe. (Er, what happens then if a terrorist is caught smuggling explosives in a body cavity?) Which is to say, when that TSA supervisor famously told John Tyner, “By buying your ticket you gave up a lot of rights,” he wasn’t as wrong as you might think. Exit question: Okay, let’s give up the scanners and the patdowns. What’s Huck’s solution once we do that?

Which is to say, when that TSA supervisor famously told John Tyner, “By buying your ticket you gave up a lot of rights,” he wasn’t as wrong as you might think.

As Big Daddy used to say, BULL!”

The government’s job is protect our rights, as well as defend the nation (which it utterly failed at on 9/11), and it can do both. It just doesn’t want to.

And when prominent conservatives brush off constitutional concerns with the bromide “the Constitution is not a suicide pact,” (or, as Mitt Romney put it in 2007, “Our most basic civil liberty is the right to be kept alive”) is it so surprising that liberty and dignity get sent to the back of the line?

Like it or not, we live in the world the alarmists have made.

Thanks, neoclowns!

And lest we forget, the underwear bomber is what prompted this travel fascism, and yet:

…both 9/11 and the underwear bomber happened because our government refuses to perform its legally-mandated duty to control our border and the foreigners that seek to cross it.

In the case of 9/11, several of the terrorists were here on expired Visas. That is, they were here without authorization, and our government still, ten years later, refuses to track those people down and expel them. But for that failure and our government’s willful refusal to investigate the goons that didn’t want to know how to land planes at Florida flight schools, 9/11 would not have happened.

The underwear bomber got on a plane which was then cleared into US airspace by DHS and the FAA with the knowledge that the bomber was on board and lacked a valid passport. Every person on the passenger manifest has a passport control number attached. He did not, because he didn’t present one, and someone at the departure airport personally overrode the airline’s objections.

disa on November 23, 2010 at 12:58 PM

Huck is right. If Obama, Napolitano and Pistole had an ounce of foresight, they would have known that folks were not going to be happy about the “peep or grope” policy.

If any of them had an ounce of class, all of them would have marched their families through the procedures publicly before they were put in place.

Trent1289 on November 23, 2010 at 12:47 PM

It really doesn’t get left out, because it’s the problem to begin with. Those things aren’t as safe as we’ve been lead to believe, and they are completely invasive and remain stored on computers. There’s already been a leak of scanned pictures put side-by-side with pictures of the people they represent.

A pat down is humiliating, but it’s over when it’s over.

If this is really where we are as a country over attacks that have killed less than a third of the number of car accidents each year, then we have some serious issues.

And if it’s all about security, we do know that terrorists can and will sneak things onto places inside their own bodies and maybe even inside a child’s body. So let’s just preempt that failed attack by going all in right now. We can even give people the option of either getting searched manually or getting a full x-ray. That’s fair, right?

I thought a stewardess had her body handled because they told her to put her badge over her back before the body scan, and then, when they saw something on her back (heh), signalled her aside for the full treatment.

My son will be travelling this Christmas, and I’ve already warned him and his girlfriend — all piercings, including his stupid tongue stud, have to come out during the screening, or they open themselves to a massive amount of intrusion.

PROFILE!!!!!! Let’s use some intelligence for just a second instead of relying on A) the “magic bullet” machine du jour and/or B) TSA agents that aren’t exactly in the running to be Rhodes Scholars. If we are all so concerned about a bomb blowing up a plane (and we are), why can’t we train smart people to do this job instead of setting the bar so low that you don’t need anything above a GED? I mean a GED is great for flipping burgers or assembling cars for GM, but for screening potential terrorists? That’s the best we can do? Really?

search4truth on November 23, 2010 at 1:04 PM

We can even give people the option of either getting searched manually or getting a full x-ray. That’s fair, right?

Esthier on November 23, 2010 at 1:02 PM

STUPID argument.

Why should I be searched at all? I have no history of violence on planes, and have receipts from traveling for decades.

100% of the bombings have been by teenage-to-50something Muslim males. screen them. ask them. check their passport. they are the problem, not me.

oh, and use bomb-sniffing dogs. muslims will fly less and less.

picklesgap on November 23, 2010 at 1:05 PM

With nude scans of peoples bodies from all four sides, an extremely accurate 3D nude model could be constructed. The computer could even do most of the work with very little user input, similar to how photos are stitched together to make panoramas. It would be much easier than Photoshoping.

I’m not saying that this is happening already or that it’s in the works, only that it is technically possible, (and not difficult), and therefor the potential for abuse in the future exists.

Now, imagine the current government, if it continues down this authoritarian path—what it could do with 100% accurate digital nude models of their “enemies”, as Obama called them.

upinak on November 23, 2010 at 1:12 PM

Okay, let’s give up the scanners and the patdowns. What’s Huck’s solution once we do that?

The conservative/libertarian/free-market solution: get the government out of it altogether.

Let each airline provide their own security. Let them do whatever they feel best serves their customers by combining both security and acceptable levels of customer service and customer interaction.

Let the paying customer decide if they’ll accept greater risk for less intrusion; let the shareholders decide where the the most profitable balance is found between overzealous security and privacy. Let airlines do what it takes – including profiling, if that’s what is effective.

As almost always is the case, if you get government out of the equation, let people decide for themselves, let private business decide what risks/reward ratio to accept in the name of profitability, and the problem will take care of itself.

If you’re truly afraid of the lottery-size odds of ending up in a terrorist attack, I’m sure a niche market would arise for airlines happy to check each customers bodily cavities. For the less risk adverse, I’m sure a market would arise with very limited security – perhaps an airline that would actually ALLOW armed passengers, in some fashion.

It would work. It has worked. It does work. But we’ve gone so far down the road of being conditioned to believe that only government can provide for our safety, that most people would gasp in horror at the mere suggestion.

Frankly, if we do NOT start profiling, and if we leave government in charge, the current system cannot change. It can only get worse. Anyone who thinks actual strip searches aren’t the next stop on this slippery slope, just wait a couple years.

Okay, let’s give up the scanners and the patdowns. What’s Huck’s solution once we do that?

Don’t know Hucks solution but if you get stopped for a driving offense within seconds your plate is run through LEIN and NCIC. Your licence is immediately run and your proof of insurance is verified. When you purchase a ticket with a credit card your credit is checked almost immediately. If you pay cash for a one way ticket you should provide a little identity proof that could be verified easily. I have a little over a dozen gun permits and only have to carry a new permit for 30 days until every law enforcement agency has the data. There are very few people that do not have a history in some data bank that could be used to instantly prove who you are and if you have a criminal background that may require extra scrutiny. The very small percentage of passengers that can not provide an acceptable proof of good citizenship in this country or there home country should absolutely be given the full attention of the TSA.

Nice idea, but this country would allow racial profiling before they’d allow that. It’s not a matter of just your plane being safe. Since 9/11, it’s a matter of all planes being safe. If only the plane and its passengers had perished, we’d be living in a completely different world.

I’m not sure about the numbers..But El Rushbo told about a lady yesterday who had to do a “pat down” because of metal in body and she left the “pat down” crying! They touched her in some places they would not have touched my wife ..The wife would have freaked and I would probaly be doing this post from a jail cell..:)

OT – Megyn just repoted that there is a cargo search going on a Boston Airport. A bomb-sniffing dog sensed something.

Thanks for the link, MadCon. This administration is pushing this garbage for either unionization of the TSa ro to force a bailout from the airlines. Do we really have to put up with this despicable individual for 2 more years?

Is Allahpundit completely ignorant of the obvious answer (profiling)?

fossten on November 23, 2010 at 1:19 PM

why can’t we train smart people to do this job instead of setting the bar so low that you don’t need anything above a GED? I mean a GED is great for flipping burgers or assembling cars for GM, but for screening potential terrorists? That’s the best we can do? Really?

search4truth on November 23, 2010 at 1:04 PM

I see your point, but look at the Haavid-educated brainiacs running the country.

Plenty of college grads have not a lick of sense. I was one of them.

Fortunately, it’s been a long time since I’ve been in school, and I’ve learned some stuff. There’s nothing like experience – which is why we should be using ex-military people for screening. People who learned to tell the difference between peaceful Iraqis and insurgents.

This gets left out of the debate too often. Want to avoid being touched? Go through the scanner.

You may ask: Where are the Moslems? Not flying, I guess.

Key West Reader on November 23, 2010 at 1:18 PM

They’re probably meeting with CAIR lawyers, ramping things up in case they’re subjected to a search or scanner. Can’t abuse their wimen folk, ya know. The entire American population bows to their religion now.

BTW, did Zip and MO visit any cathedrals while they were visiting Europe? Seems that mosques are the only religious edifices that interest them.

Frankly, I’m surprised that The One hasn’t mobilized Napolitano and TSA chief John Pistole to be scanned in full view of TV cameras to help calm passengers’ nerves

Can you imagine the look on the TSA agent’s face when he touches Uncle Janet’s junk?

We need serious thoughts on this not stupid soundbites by Big Government Nanny Staters.

This flake is NOT a serious person.

Esthier on November 23, 2010 at 1:19 PM

Some of them won’t react with revulsion to the dog. But if they have explosives in a body cavity, the dog will signal a warning. Scanners and pat-downs won’t.

I am quite unconcerned about pissing off “innocent” Muslims with sniffer dogs. If they don’t like it, let them begin to call out the terrorists in their midst. They know who the terrorists are better than we do.

novaculus on November 23, 2010 at 1:35 PM

I’m surprised that the fact that this data could, theoretically, be used to create an exact computerized duplicate of your naked body, which could then be manipulated into any position without your knowledge. With these models the government could take a “picture”, or even a movie, of you doing anything they wish—without your knowledge.

That possibility, some day, is what concerns me the most.

If you have three detailed pictures from different angles of a persons body, in a controlled environment, the dimensions of you body can be deduced from the images and the accompanying readings.

I’m not saying that is their plan, only that the potential for such abuse combined with the power said abuse would provide over, say, conservative members of the SCOTUS….

The scanners are far more troubling to me than the groping. Many of the most influential people in America, since they tend to fly a lot, have probably already been scanned.

FloatingRock on November 23, 2010 at 1:36 PM

If you have three detailed pictures from different angles of a persons body, in a controlled environment, the dimensions of you body can be deduced from the images and the accompanying readings.

…Then, once a dimensionally accurate model is created the image of your skin, captured by the scanner, is overlaid on the model.

I have no doubt that the scanner’s are capable of creating high resolution images of all your scars and defects, certainly high enough to forge a photograph.

Let us not forget that The Hanford Tests, prove that we can not trust the government to tell us how much radiation that we are receiving.

Your point is spot on…I guess my point was instead of relying on technology and some doofus with a security wand, let’s use the type of people that can be trained to discern the difference between grandpa and Sheik Mohammed the bomber.

Ex-military and/or ex-police types would not only do a better job, but I would be willing to wager that they would be more professional than a lot of the current meatballs and mouth-breathers that the TSA employs.

search4truth on November 23, 2010 at 1:46 PM

They could theoretically put cloths on the models, but maybe not. Either way the 3D models could fool your spouse, especially a faked photo.

I know, I sound like a conspiracy nut, but I’m not. I’m just saying the potential is there, and I believe that the old saying that, “absolute power corrupts absolutely.” is accurate given enough time.

FloatingRock on November 23, 2010 at 1:48 PM

novaculus on November 23, 2010 at 1:35 PM

My point is simply that if your desire is to insult Muslims to discourage them from flying, you won’t be effective at discouraging the ones who actually mean you harm from flying but instead will only be effective at discouraging innocents from doing so.

And yeah, all Muslims are terrorists or know one, or something.

I get that you don’t care for Huck, neither do I, but why is it “juvenile” to subject our masters in Washington to the same stuff to which they subject us?

james23 on November 23, 2010 at 1:02 PM

Well, in my opinion nothing is wrong with holding our elected officials to the same standards that we are held.

But isn’t it kind of silly to accept the premise that we should give up our rights and be treated like criminals as long as the president is willing to go though the same process once as a photo-op?

And also, instead of dreaming up fantastic scenarios, why not focus on a solution that might actually work?

Dorvillian on November 23, 2010 at 1:49 PM

A huge argument that liberals like to bring up is that TSA agents don’t actually want to tough your junk or see you naked, and I’m sure that’s largely true. I’m sure the vast majority only want a paying job.

But now it is someone’s job to look at passengers who are naked, and that job also involves saving these images, images which can be turned into high resolution full color photos. Think that might change the applicant pool a bit?
