Quotes of the day
posted at 9:30 pm on November 20, 2010 by Allahpundit
“Fifty years ago, William F. Buckley wrote a memorable complaint about the fact that Americans do not complain enough. His point, like most of the points he made during his well-lived life, is, unfortunately, more pertinent than ever. Were he still with us, he would favor awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he received in 1991, to John Tyner, who, when attempting to board a plane in San Diego, was provoked by some Transportation Security Administration personnel…
“What the TSA is doing is mostly security theater, a pageant to reassure passengers that flying is safe. Reassurance is necessary if commerce is going to flourish and if we are going to get to grandma’s house on Thursday to give thanks for the Pilgrims and for freedom. If grandma is coming to our house, she may be wanded while barefoot at the airport because democracy – or the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment; anyway, something – requires the amiable nonsense of pretending that no one has the foggiest idea what an actual potential terrorist might look like…
“The average American has regular contact with the federal government at three points – the IRS, the post office and the TSA. Start with that fact if you are formulating a unified field theory to explain the public’s current political mood.”
***
“The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is warning that any would-be commercial airline passenger who enters an airport checkpoint and then refuses to undergo the method of inspection designated by TSA will not be allowed to fly and also will not be permitted to simply leave the airport.
“That person will have to remain on the premises to be questioned by the TSA and possibly by local law enforcement. Anyone refusing faces fines up to $11,000 and possible arrest…
“‘Once a person submits to the screening process, they can not just decide to leave that process,’ says Sari Koshetz, regional TSA spokesperson, based in Miami.”
***
“A retired special education teacher on his way to a wedding in Orlando, Fla., said he was left humiliated, crying and covered with his own urine after an enhanced pat-down by TSA officers recently at Detroit Metropolitan Airport…
“Before starting the enhanced pat-down procedure, a security officer did tell him what they were going to do and how they were going to it, but Sawyer said it wasn’t until they asked him to remove his sweatshirt and saw his urostomy bag that they asked any questions about his medical condition…
“‘One agent watched as the other used his flat hand to go slowly down my chest. I tried to warn him that he would hit the bag and break the seal on my bag, but he ignored me. Sure enough, the seal was broken and urine started dribbling down my shirt and my leg and into my pants.’…
“‘I am a good American and I want safety for all passengers as much as the next person,’ Sawyer said. “But if this country is going to sacrifice treating people like human beings in the name of safety, then we have already lost the war.’”

I just hope that there is a bottoming out because at this point I am not convinced anything would change the minds of some of the lemmings in the ruling class. They seem to have a desire for someone to rule over them.
sharrukin on November 20, 2010 at 11:57 PM
Why, are you into silicone? I would think Dallas, Austin, or Phoenix would be much more enjoyable and umm, natural. It won’t be long before someone works to colorize these pics and put them up on the internet.
AZfederalist on November 21, 2010 at 12:01 AM
But only those over 12. The rumor is that NAMBLA’s putting in a bid to screen the kids.
Drained Brain on November 21, 2010 at 12:02 AM
Not just the ruling class. There are unfortunately too many of the country class all too willing to surrender here. Look at some of the lemmings on here (some of which, granted, are very likely TSA or government plants) and also on some of those linked videos. Comments like, “well, if I’m getting on the airplane, if it takes patting down a 4 year old child to keep me safe, I’m all for it”, or “If I’m getting on the plane, I want my fellow passengers to have been fondled and groped [OK, not exactly in those words] so I know I’m safe”.
As someone put it, we’ve got to stop looking for things and start looking for people.
AZfederalist on November 21, 2010 at 12:04 AM
Preposterous. If it ever happens it won’t by blackmail. They’ll either command it or will make it so cool that everybody will want one.
FloatingRock on November 21, 2010 at 12:11 AM
I’ve been doing a lot of waiting in airports the last couple of days, and talking to everyone about it. Not a single person said that the TSA made them feel any safer. Not one.
They overreached again. Literally. The TSA’s days are numbered.
John the Libertarian on November 21, 2010 at 12:11 AM
Exactly.
It’s the same nonsense with gun control. They concentrate on the hunk of metal rather than the ones wielding it. A hijacker or a suicide bomber is going to be a person and that is what we have to stop.
sharrukin on November 21, 2010 at 12:16 AM
Those people probably are not plants. Some people simply place too much faith in authority. It’s an age old problem.
FloatingRock on November 21, 2010 at 12:25 AM
One of them said he worked for the TSA (GM something?) so it wouldn’t surprise me if it was true. It’s not as if we don’t know Axelrod has astroturfing trolls on his payroll.
sharrukin on November 21, 2010 at 12:28 AM
I don’t think they all are. There have been a few who seem to not be regulars here who suddenly started posting (G M coming to mind) just on this subject. I am willing to be corrected on that, but I’ve also seen the same on a couple of other blogs as well.
AZfederalist on November 21, 2010 at 12:29 AM
As an HA commentator so brilliantly opined over the Bristol Palin TV shooting: Guns don’t kill appliances, people with guns kill appliances.
Or Larry the Cable Guy: There’s people saying guns kill people. Well if that’s true, then we gotta punish pencils, ’cause they sure are guilty of a lot of misspelled words.
John the Libertarian on November 21, 2010 at 12:36 AM
How long until there is an exception for card-carrying union members?
GaltBlvnAtty on November 21, 2010 at 12:36 AM
I’m not saying that you’re wrong, only that there are some people who wouldn’t even care if they were doing cavity searches so long as the authorities tell them it’s the only way to keep them safe.
FloatingRock on November 21, 2010 at 12:40 AM
I like that quote from Larry the Cable Guy. Couldn’t watch the movie though.
It stems from the belief that people are basically good and trying to find a reason… any reason as to why they do terrible things. They latch onto weapons, society, addiction-is-a-disease, anything to shift the blame onto something else.
sharrukin on November 21, 2010 at 12:41 AM
Either the inevitable loss of income will force a change or our corporatist President wants the airline industry to hurt, more.
Its for the children.
Speakup on November 21, 2010 at 12:44 AM
Hmm. Sensing a theme here. Blame the object, not the person. No personal responsibility.
Obama: It’s Bush’s fault.
Bush: I take full responsibility.
John the Libertarian on November 21, 2010 at 12:50 AM
Yeah, I think we are in violent agreement on that. Scary isn’t it? My guess is that this is the kind of people who would consent to random home searches for contraband as well since it will make sure people are kept safe and they have nothing to hide after all.
AZfederalist on November 21, 2010 at 12:53 AM
Bush wasn’t a great conservative but he could at least man up and as you take responsibility, and he had a certain basic decency that Obama lacks.
sharrukin on November 21, 2010 at 12:55 AM
When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. When government fears the people, there is liberty.
gary4205 on November 21, 2010 at 12:56 AM
Don’t get me started on the ways I criticize Bush.
In retrospect, TARP (though I rejected it) is going to end up making us money. But porkulus? Money down the toilet.
John the Libertarian on November 21, 2010 at 1:03 AM
I just got up to use the toilet, and got urine running down my leg.
OmahaConservative on November 21, 2010 at 1:09 AM
TSA “screeners” have names. The Americans seem to tacitly acknowledge the superiority of TSA “screeners” by protecting the anonymity of these men whom they claim they regard as trashy crotch-grabbers.
Kralizec on November 21, 2010 at 1:12 AM
I think TARP was wrong because it did prevented an economic drop.
That was needed even if it would have hurt because we are building up to a massive collapse now which will dwarf anything TARP prevented. Corrections are part of the economic cycle and are needed to keep investors from get too crazy with expectations. They reign in speculators and drive money into safer investments. Without that you have investors pouring money into investments knowing they will get bailed out. Like the housing market, TARP, Freddie and Fanny, the banks, Iceland, Greece, and now Ireland.
They are borrowing money from the last poor saps who might have some change stuck in their couch in the vain hope that the economy will magically improve and they will avoid facing the music.
sharrukin on November 21, 2010 at 1:17 AM

First. Even if it worked. If the price of my being safe is molesting people, I do not wish to be safe.
Second. Profiling treats everybody the same. You would be inspected, until the inspectors are reasonably sure you are not a terrorist.

This terribly intrusive pat-down stuff is designed to make us more accepting of the X-ray machines. It’s an old trick. If we fall for it, we’ve lost the battle.

This Scarlet Letter belongs to Islam.
Yet, it’s pinned on Americans.

The incident with the colostomy bag gives me an idea,
When a person travels via air, when one passes through the airport, before they arrive at the TSA sexual assault and radiation point, they can drink lots of liquid, and refrain from using the toilet, no matter how much the urge.
When the passenger discovers they are now targeted for sexual assault, groping, and violation and humiliation, they can wait until the TSA agent begins to grope their geneitals. At that point the passenger may relieve himself or herself, taking care to pee on the TSA agent’s violating hands, face, and what not!
Then, when they are done, the passenger can declare that they’ve decided they do not wish to be violated any longer, call 911 on their cell phone, report a sexual assault and violation of their rights, and see if their local police will side with them and arrest TSA, which the police SHOULD do.
Of course, another avenue of defense is for all the passengers to call the police and ask the police to arrest the TSA agenst for sexual assault and violating their rights. When the police finally take the side of the people, and when the military takes the side of the people, and when the people take the side of the people, then the TSA and the rest of the intrusive government will have no more friends to support their violations of our Constitutional rights, save for Communist, Socialist, Fascist nations, and such.
William2006 on November 21, 2010 at 4:42 AM
William, it looks like the TSA already has local police on their side. Quote #2 mentions them. And not answering their questions might result in an $11,000 fine. I think lawyers are the only way to go if we’ve already lost the police; take it all the way to the Supreme Court and see how they interpret our Fourth Amendment.

Well, if lawyers are the “only way”…..America is so screwed.
Who knew that the TSA would be such stupid enablers of terrorism?
nagee76 on November 21, 2010 at 6:14 AM
Incredible, isn’t it? A public policy, and we’re not supposed to mention it by name here.
Beyond ludicrous.
AZCoyote on November 21, 2010 at 7:05 AM
I heard one story where a woman who was on a business trip was pregant. She hadn’t told her co-workers yet and refused the scan. She was questioned while in few view of her co-workers and had to go down the pat down route why she was refusing the scan. She also had to explain why she refused the scan.
Great way to tell people you are pregant hey? A memory to cherish.
I wonder if they had stopped the underwear bomber in the first place would we have to go through this pat down.
What happens next when some terroist packs explosives up his butt, anal checks?

Scrap all this screening crap. Just do 2 things.
(1) First, anyone who wants to fly should, 6 months in advance, apply for a background check that will result in a biometric ID card. This card would be used like a passport, but for domestic travel. All that then is required to fly is to present the card and get a retinal scan. The former says who you are, the latter says you are who you say you are. Bring the card every time you fly.
(2) Second, on the back of every airline seat will be a holster containing a Taser. A one minute “how to properly use a Taser” lecture will be given by the flight attendants. Proper use will include — anyone standing up screaming Allah Akbar — gets tasered by everyone who can pull, aim, and shoot. As Tasers don’t shoot bullets, there will be no danger of cabin depressurization.
In exchange — all the “security area” scanners, bag checks, shoe checks, wanding, and pat downs — go away. Forever. And boarding the airplane returns to 1970. Nice.

In an Obama world every U.S. citizen is a potential criminal or terrorist.
Or just payback to U.S. citizens for not voting for Democrats in the last election? These “enhanced” pat downs started after the November elections…

It makes me so sad that our once great country has taken to humiliating it’s own citizens because there may be another terrorist lurking among us. This is not keeping us safe. Out of the millions and millions of people they’ve assaulted in this manner, how many threats have the found. One? Five? I have not read of any finds other than those big bad a$$ nail clippers. Bin Laden has won, he must be ROFLHAO.

It’s not so much that we are headed to another collapse as it is that the papering over of the symptoms is preventing a real recovery. The conditions that encourage the booms and busts haven’t been cleared up by any means, but we really can’t start heading for another bust until we actually recover from the last one.

Personally, I don’t want a same sex pat-down. I would prefer a cute young lady do the deed… If one is not immediately available… I’ll wait. Even if it means catching a later flight. Alternatively, I could schedule to arrive the day prior to the flight and spend the whole night being searched in great detail by said young lady.
-
In a pinch (i.e… if a cute young lady is not on staff at the airport in question) I’m not against having pretty much any female do the pat-down. However, it has been many years since I’ve been touched by a male in as intimate a way as this is rapidly headed…
-
By this point in life I would like my preference to be viewed as if it’s a religious requirement… Or… call it my sexually leaning/lifestyle if that makes it more legally legitimate. Other wordings can be made up as needed so long as the result is no same sex pat-downs for me.
-
I’m willing to allow fairly detailed searches of my person provided the aforementioned conditions are accommodated. Otherwise… don’t touch my junk or I might pi** on your hand.
