Allen West: Civil Rights Icon John Lewis is a hypocrite

posted at 11:30 am on November 20, 2010 by The Right Scoop

Civil Rights Icon John Lewis, admitting he didn’t know the facts of the case, proceeded to defend Charlie Rangel against his ethics violations by dredging up Rangel’s involvement in the Civil Rights movement. I guess the facts of the case or rather the actual ethics violations themselves don’t matter to John Lewis if you are one of his friends. Yet Allen West says that while he was being viciously attacked during his recent campaign, having his social security number mailed to all of his constituents and being accused of being a member of an all white motorcycle gang, that John Lewis came down and campaigned against him, supporting the man who was playing the race card and egregiously smearing him. West sees this as duplicitous and asks if instead of defending Charlie Rangel, Lewis should have stood on character.

West also has strong words for the Congressional Black Caucus that he criticizes for ‘preaching victimization and dependency’ while supporting ‘liberal social welfare policies that are failing in the black community’.

It’s been a long time in coming, but I am so happy to see Allen West, a man of character and principle, not only taking on the Congressional Black Caucus but the liberal policies of the Left in his new capacity as a congressman. This will be a fight worth watching.

A bit off topic, but Juan Williams did an excellent job with the interview of West and with the whole O’Reilly show last night. I wouldn’t mind Juan and Laura alternating hosts and let BOR take an extended vacation.

Just when I’m ready to write Juan off, he finds his voice a little. Pretty good interview by Juan and West was exquisite as usual. Refreshing to see a Congressman actually answer a question. Sure hope he keeps that quality, which I suspect he will.

Col. West epitomizes the term best and brightest.

I loved that he said he’ll join the black caucus to advance an intelligent dialogue and effect change. There absolutely is a double standard when the candidate or elected official is a black conservative. They’re branded a sell-out or Uncle Tom if they’re not Liberal.

I’m confident that few members of the black caucus will ever effectively dispute West’s arguments or persuade him to back down. He’ll continue to be a thorn in the side of their prejudice.

Mr_Magoo on November 20, 2010 at 11:52 AM

I think Cleaver was the one who claimed to be spat upon. The closest they came to proving that was someone’s spittle hitting him when they were shouting at the congressmen passing by. By that rationale, Chris Matthews spits on all his guests.

Lewis on the other hand did claim to be called the N-word at that rally, and he also compared McCain/Palin rally attendees to George Wallace supporters back in 2008. The man is a disgrace. He may have been a civil rights hero half a century ago, but that doesn’t give him carte blanche to smear people with the racist label to further his party’s political agenda.

IT looks like Col. West is going to do some House cleaning.

Just a hunch, but I don’t think he’s intimidated by that gang of empty shelled screamers in the CBC.

He is my hero… a true patriot who really “gets it.” He is so knowledgeable about history too. I get so inspired whenever I hear this man speak. Please, please let him be our president one day. He is so very much what this country needs.

squeek71 on November 20, 2010 at 12:39 PM

I have heard Col. West and Rep. Scott on the issue of joining the CBC. They both have excellent arguments. West says he wants to bring intellectual debate (and i would add intellectual honesty) to the CBC, while Tim ScotI, who is also very impressive, maintains that he does not want to join because he does not seek to define himself (or be defined) by his race.

They are both right. And they’re both great.

I strongly suspect that West is precisely the man whom King had in mind when he spoke of content of character rather than color of skin.

I’m a cracker who loathes Obama for all the right reasons, and I admire West for all the right reasons.

Blacks, in particular, will have decide whether they are an Obama-Rangel-Waters-Lewis-type black or a West-type black. In the case of the latter, no label actually applies, because in that case, they’d just be a great American whose race is entirely irrelevant.

BuckeyeSam on November 20, 2010 at 12:43 PM

JKahn913 on November 20, 2010 at 12:43 PM

Just because someone may have been on the right side of history, or at least the winning side, does not imbue them with any intrinsically morally superior qualities. They can in fact be even more corrupt that the average person simply because they were involved in a movement that first and foremost, served interests dear to them. That is not the hallmark of someone with strong character.

keep the change on November 20, 2010 at 12:43 PM

Another point.

Even if we stipulate that John Lewis is/was a hero what was the object of his heroism? So that African American politicians could be elected to rob, cheat, steal under the cover of their office? So that other African Americans, with stellar reputations in the service of their country, could be, while having the temerity to seek public office, be slandered and sabotaged in the most racist ways possible? And that he, Lewis, could lend his electoral support not to the African American but the racist attackers?

He is no longer a hero. He is a poser.

Blaise on November 20, 2010 at 12:45 PM

Juan Williams does a much better job on The Factor than Ted Baxter does. He allows his guests to talk and he seems to let his liberalness to stay in the background.

Oh please! What Republican, conservative, libertarian, or “RINO” is going to try to “discourage” Allen West? Some may want to discourage Palin for the very simple reason that they don’t think she can win the election (for a host of reasons) but that has to do with coming to a conclusion based on evidence regarding her negatives, and nothing to do with being a “pansy” (and has zero, zilch, nada to do with West).

Latinos are the ones that the Democrats are targeting to get on the plantation now that the blacks have had enough (or at least some of them). In 10 years, (if the Latinos get duped) we’ll be talking about 70% of Latinos being born out of wedlock, 60% of young latino men being incarcerted, predominatly Latino housing project, rampant alcoholism, poverty and more latinos being killed by other latinos than other etnicities… I hope it doesn’t happen. This type of “smearing” activity is again taking place or perhaps never ceased (though I note an increase in the gruesome activity since last week, similar to what was taking place in the two years prior to Obama “winning”) — by the Left, by Democrats, upon anyone on the Right, Republican or not.

Especially as to Blacks and women (of any/all races/ethnicities) on the Right, whether political candidates or not.

There sure are a lot of Democrats who sit at computers dail and write hateful crud about the Right, and target any individual on the Right who makes sense about any issue.
