Romney tells donors: No presidential announcement anytime soon
posted at 8:37 pm on November 18, 2010 by Allahpundit
I know what you’re thinking, but no, this doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll miss the debate at the Reagan library. That’s scheduled for “spring 2011″ and he’s only committing to stay out of the race through February. To put that in perspective for you, Bill Clinton didn’t officially announce his candidacy in 1991 until … October.
Why not announce sooner, though, since we all know he’s running?
“People are exhausted from the 2010 election, and they’re not anxious to begin right away with the next campaign,” Romney told 245 of his top financial supporters on a conference call Thursday, a Romney aide told POLITICO. His team organized the call to connect with top supporters following a busy 2010 season and discuss Romney’s political future.
Romney also told supporters that his organization will be “smaller in scale than our last effort.”
The rationale, as Romney explained it: In 2008, he was a little-known figure who had to spend millions on a large organization if he was to compete against Arizona Sen. John McCain for the Republican nomination. In that cycle, he announced an exploratory committee in January 2007 and officially announced a bid in February.
I find it odd that he’s touting a smaller campaign apparatus given that money’s not an issue and he’s the one guy whose hopes may depend on a 50-state primary campaign to defeat the candidate who emerges from the “true conservative” wing of the party. Could be that it’s a managerial thing — fewer aides means greater efficiency, etc — but I wonder if he isn’t deliberately trying to keep a light organizational footprint to blunt criticism from the base that he’s part of the “machine” or whatever. One of the takeaways from that Times profile of Palin that I linked last night is not only that her own “organization” is small, it’s so small that it basically doesn’t exist. It’s just her and Todd and four or five advisors trying to coordinate things as best they can with conference calls and e-mail tag. In fact, possibly the most revealing line in that piece is Palin herself admitting that she knows things will have to change if she’s going to make a run. Getting bigger is a purely practical move on her part. Is that also true of Romney’s decision to get smaller, or is there more to it?
Here’s Carville, fresh off his observation about the number of balls Obama and Hillary share, musing about why Romney remains the frontrunner. His logic’s not as persuasive as Philip Klein’s, but then the point here isn’t analysis, it’s derision.

I’m disinclined to let Politico dictate when the primary season begins. Seems like Nancy Reagan’s being made the face of this thing to compel participation in the debate. Way too early for it.
Can we please have a non-campaign season for once, where the candidates for office aren’t explicitly in the throes of the race? You know, a more policy-focused, modest, non-soundbite driven discussion of the issues?
Please?

My wife swoons every time she sees Romney, and tolerates his politics save for the Masscare debacle. He’s sell-able if he’s the nominee, at least for that demographic. In 12 months if he’s the frontrunner and the economy is still abysmal he could be a lock.
Me, I’m not sold yet. Got my vote if he’s up against Obama, of course.

I don’t think Mitt is going to run. he has done everything he needed to do to set up a run but the numbers ar enot there. he can not win. If Palin runs mitt can not win and he is not going to waste millions to come in second or third place. the only way Mitt runs is if Palin doesn’t. which explains the big push to get her not to run.

ajacksonian on November 18, 2010 at 8:52 PM
Exactly – they’re taking advantage of Nancy Reagan – who is a very old woman now – and, I’m surprised there hasn’t been outrage about this.
They basically manipulated her in order to put the GOP candidate field into a position of either showing up for a skewed Lame Stream coordinated hack event – or dishonoring Nancy Reagan and, by extension – Ronaldus Maximus.
Still I think everyone should bow out.
The debates should be hosted by Fox News (Brett Baird), I’d say Steven Hayes from the Weekly Standard could do a good job and I’d even consider S.E. Cupp.
Yeah – they’re all conservative (we think) but – for the primary – isn’t that how it should be? Why do you want George Stephanopolis asking questions at a GOP debate that’s just stupid on it’s face.

I think his bomb of a speech at CPAC, his failure to get Meg whitman and Sen bennet elected is giving Mitt secodn thoughts on if he should run or not. mitt for all his faults is not totally stupid. He sees that the pathway for victory will be very hard, very costly, and very bitter. It will not be a piece of cake. If Palin runs he will hav eto constanly react to her and will appear flatfooted. Palin likes to go on the offense. mitt likes detailed plans. He does not think quickly on his feet.
The more i think about it the more I doubt mitt will run instead he will throw his weight behind the anti-palin candidate and hope to gain power maybe even as a VP candidate.
Mitt is not a risk taker and the 2012 primary is one of huge risk. even if he wins the primary he will go about against Obama an incumbant. now most folks think Obama is a paper tiger but Mitt is of the beltway mind which thinks Obama will be ver yhard to beat.
Given all of these things does Mitt take tha tbig of a risk of wait for 2016 and hope maybe to get a VP or a big admin post in 2012 if the GOP nominee wins.

this is what is know as putting your supporters on ice. By him delaying he freezes his supporters while making up his mind. they can not go anywhere else which will limit those seeking to enter the race and then if he decides not to run he can transfer those supporters to his pick giving him power within that campaign. It is not looking good for a Mitt run. A man 100% committed to the race would not ice his supporters like this.
the data points are adding up that Mitt will not take the risk and will sit out the 2012 election.

How so. the GOP won a major victory. they are not exhausted the base is fired up. they want to take the fight to Obama from now until nov 2012. they do not want a time out. They want their leaders out there fighting the good fight. Rallying the troops to stop the EO coming. to stop the lame duck session. To call off the TSA dogs. If mitt really thinks people are exhausted he is seriously reading the population wrong. So is this really how he thinks or is this just an excuse to give him time to make up his mind?

That is not the best question to ask. The better question to ask if whether the American people will give Obama “a second kick at the can” in 2012? 2012 is all about Obama and not the GOP nominee, regardless of how the MSM would like to frame the general election in 2012.
With Obama only receiving the approval of 37% of WHITE voters as determined by both the midterm exit polls and Quinnpiac yesterday that gives the GOP nominee a chance to duplicate the 60% figure in 2 years.
Sure Obama’s numbers could improve because of improvement in the economy but Obama is a left-wing ideologue who is not going to pivot to the center. I don’t expect the economy to improve appreciably in the next 2 years under Obama’s watch. But of course I could be wrong.

Let’s see, she’s been in politics, SUCCESSFULLY, for 20 years. She’s held THREE chief executive positions. All quite successfully.
She’s a PROVEN courageous leader. She has the right vision for America and track record that says if elected, she’ll put it in place.
My God, the woman promised to get the gas line going. Every Governor for 50 years promised it. Never went anywhere. She got it done in two.
She made a ton of campaign promises and fulfilled every single one on two years. BTW, this is another reason why she had no problem doing the right thing and resigning as Governor, she had done absolutely everything she had promised to do, and then some.
See, this is why I absolutely hate “moderates.” You squishes are cowards. Absolute cowards.
You know how someone wins? People believe in them, get behind them, and then work their butts off to make sure it happens.
Sitting and worrying if someone is “electable” based on lies from the corrupt media is stupid. Looking for someone who is “electable” is how we ended up with John McCain.
McCain talked a good game “fight with me my friends, fight with me!” But he never fought himself. He’s a squish.
Winners, like Sarah Palin inspire people. They inspire their supporters to do everything in their power to make sure she’ll win.
We’ll knock doors, make phone calls, whatever it takes.
It’s the same formula for any candidate. The candidate may get the prize in the end, but it’s the supporters they inspire to work on their behalf who help them get there.
Sitting and fretting over who the editorial board of the N Y Times loves, or how some freak in San Fransisco may vote is stupid. It’s a losing strategy.
Pick who you think is Teh Won and take a stand! MAKE it happen.

Silly theory.
First to the car salesman snark – his father turned AMC around without taxpayer help. He was a self-made man who worked hard and accomplished great things both in the business world and in the area of civil rights. Do you have a problem with that?
As to the “socialized medicine” meme – please explain how that phrase describes what Mitt (and the Mass legislature) put in place. I understand the objections to it, but you’ll have to explain what it has in common with Socialized Medicine and consider some of these questions: Do they have Comparative Effectiveness Panels in Massachusetts? Do they subscribe to the Complete Lives System (QALY) of rationed care? Do bureaucrats dictate how patients are to be treated after they are diagnosed by a physician? Is the State the people’s insurer? Is the Federal government the people’s insurer? Is there an implicit plan to force private insurers out of business, pushing residents into a single payer plan? Was this plan forced on the residents of Massachusetts without their approval? Did Senior citizens get sold down the river to fund this program?
