Pelosi uses the usual strategy to resolve Hoyer-Clyburn fight

posted at 12:30 pm on November 13, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

When a private sector organization loses resources and has to downsize, it has to make painful decisions on reshuffling their management to account for fewer positions, usually requiring a few demotions or outright exits.  Not so in the House Democratic caucus.  When faced with the conundrum of fitting four existing leadership members into three positions, Nancy Pelosi struggled hard for a solution — until she remembered her Democratic agenda of public-sector management and decided to just expand leadership to accommodate the odd man out:

House Democrats averted a messyleadership struggle, clearing the way for Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer to become second in command of their new minority without a challenge from South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn.

Under an arrangement worked out in private, officials said late Friday that Clyburn would instead receive a new position, title unknown and duties undescribed, explicitly labeled the third-ranking post in leadership.

The maneuvering was described by Democratic officials after Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., issued a vaguely worded statement saying she intends to nominate Clyburn to a new No. 3 post. The statement made no mention of Hoyer, and officials who filled in the details did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not permitted to speak publicly about the matter.

Instead of making a tough decision on shrinking resources, Pelosi just expanded her caucus’ government with no real plan for the additional expansion.  Gosh, doesn’t that sound familiar?

What exactly will Clyburn do, anyway?  He won’t be pushing votes as a whip does or chairing a policy committee for the caucus, so what benefit does this bring to the House Democratic caucus?  None so much as it benefits Nancy Pelosi.  By resolving the Hoyer-Clyburn conflict, she will face fewer questions about how her insistence on keeping her grip on power has disrupted the party’s leadership — and also avoids a nasty confrontation with the Congressional Black Caucus, which may still not be terribly impressed with a make-work featherbed position for Clyburn.

There is one other difference between private-sector and public-sector management, too.  In the former, losing almost 25% of the companies resources would have stockholders looking for a new CEO.

Mark1971 on November 13, 2010 at 12:45 PM

Great idea. Create a new Bullsh1t position to keep the uppity negro quiet. And Clyburn will accept the scraps from the Democrat table rather than risk the ire of the plantation owners.

Dealing with anything based on individual merit never occurs to these people.

I wonder how the minority party plans to spend money on this new position? Seems unlikely that the Republicans in charge would fund it in any way.

What exactly will Clyburn do, anyway?

He will be the one in charge of deeming GOP policies racist.

Kafir on November 13, 2010 at 2:14 PM

Clyburn will be okay with the “featherbed” made-up phony job.

In the late ’60s, he was just a lazy, shiftless, unemployable former schoolteacher living off his wife’s income when a police shooting at S.C. State raused racial tensions. Of course, the obvious solution was to form a commission and give a job to some worthless black guy, and Clyburn needed the gig, so before you could say, “They’re paying him WHAT?” he became the South Carolina Commissioner for Civil Rights, and everyone lived happily ever after.

Clyburn might have died in the position, but when black Democrats and white Republicans agreed to draw one “minority” congressional district after the 1990 census, he saw his chance to get out of town. In 1992, when the new lines went into effect, he became the first black congressman from SC since Reconstruction.

The only problem I see is there is no authorization for the extra position – perhaps Pelosi will cram it through in the lame duck session (the House sets its own rules, so it doesn’t have to pass the Senate).

This reminds me of the law firm I use to work for. They were big Democrats. I was searching for another job, mainly because they were under paying me and never promoted me. Their solution was to offer me no pay raise and to create a new title for me to make it look like I was promoted. Needless to say I left for a better paying position and an actual career path. However, before I left, they started giving everyone else at the firm new titles to make it look like they had been “promoted”. They couldn’t actually promote anyone because their business policies were so bad that they could never grow the firm. Sound familiar?

Clyburn’s the guy who called Americans “racists” if and when we opposed the badly named “healthcare legislation” that Pelosi claimed they had to pass so we “could know what is in it”.

I have yet to EVER read/hear ANY explanation from Clyburn or any other Democrat/racialist as to what is IN that mess of nonsense they passed that relates to race or defines any aspect of it by race or upon race.

In other words, what’s the substantiation or basis of Clyburn’s claims that opposing “it” was “racist” — what aspect of what they wrought IS race-based, race-defined, racialist such that opposing it would be “racist”?

[[ crickets ]]

Clyburn is a sick man. And Pelosi, well, she really is deranged. I mean that, she’s deranged. To quote Dennis Miller, “…she sleeps upside down.”

She’ll never, ever, never be out of politics, not until her date of demise. And then the Democrats will build some awful memorials to her along the lines of those built for Ted Kennedy, so she won’t actually be OUT of politics, just spoiling it more for the rest of near-history.

She’ll never, ever be out of politics. She will grub-hold on some gavel (any gavel, she’ll find one), run around the Capitol with that clickityclickityclickitybusybusybusy.don’t.stop.me.don’t.touch.my.hair.stop.it.now.busy.busy.busy… thing until someone finds her frozen like that like marble with her cold fingers gripping a gavel (any gavel) and her mouth frozen in an order for an assistant…

No wonder some think slavey is still alive and well. I’d have to say a mind that would accept this kind of crap from a deranged madwoman loser…the guy has to be slave or think like one.

He just rattled his chains a bit, asking for some extra gruel, which is how much his new “office” is worth.

And I wonder if the Dems will ever have the courage to shut the office down. Now that they have an official “black office” of “leadership” in the House, I guess CBC will supply a body every Congress to fill it.

If this isn’t a signal case in point why Democrats need to be out of power, I just dunno what else would convince a sentient.
