MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan, Ted Rall call for violent revolution?

posted at 9:30 am on November 9, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday, I was traveling to Washington DC, where I’ll speak at the Heritage Foundation about the impact and future of the Tea Party movement this morning. While waiting for my flight, a woman conducted a rather loud cell-phone conversation with a friend (where’s Amy Alkon when you need her?) in which she discussed her frustrations with having to deal with “fascist morons” from the Tea Party. We hear a lot from the Left about supposedly violent and fascist grassroots activists for, er, limited government, and perhaps no more so than on MSNBC, which has made hyperventilation an art form.

That’s what makes this clip from Dylan Ratigan’s MSNBC show even more interesting. Ratigan gives six minutes of air time to Ted Rall, the cartoonist last seen shark-jumping by insulting the late Pat Tillman for dying in service to the country. Now Rall has a new idea for improving the country, and Ratigan seems very interested the the proposal (via Verum Serum and Directorblue):

Ironically, it was only about a month ago that Sharon Angle was excoriated by several MSNBC talking heads for making a reference to “2nd amendment remedies.” Is Chris Matthews going to call out Ted Rall and/or Dylan Ratigan for letting him promote this? Rachel Maddow wanted to know if Angle’s language was finally too extreme. Well is it still extreme when it’s coming from the far left over your own TV channel, Rachel? If so, maybe you should poke your head down the hall and say something.

Lest anyone thinks that Rall is prescribing a “spiritual” revolt of some kind, John at VS provides an excerpt of the book:

We are here because the U.S. is going to end soon. There’s going to be an intense, violent, probably haphazard struggle for control. It’s going to come down to us versus them. The question is: What are you going to do about it?…

Christian fundamentalists, the millennial end-of-theworlders obsessed with the Left Behind series about the End Times, neo-Nazi racists, rural black-helicopter Michigan Militia types cut from the same inbred cloth as Timothy McVeigh, allied with “mainstream” gun nuts and right-wing Republicans, have been planning, preparing, and praying for the destruction of the “Godless,” “secular” United States for decades. In the past, they formed groups like the John Birch Society and the Aryan Nations. Now the hard Right has a postmodern, decentralized non-organization organization called the Tea Party.

Right-wing organizational names change, but they amount to the same thing: the reactionary sociopolitical force—the sole force—poised to fill the vacuum when collapse occurs. The scenario outlined by Margaret Atwood’s prescient novel The Handmaid’s Tale—rednecks in the trenches, hard military men running things, minorities and liberals taken away and massacred, setting the stage for an even more extreme form of laissez-faire corporate capitalism than we’re suffering under today—is a fair guess of how a post-U.S. scenario will play out unless we prepare to turn it in another direction…

A war is coming. At stake: our lives, the planet, freedom, living. The government, the corporations, and the extreme right are prepared to coalesce into an Axis of Evil. Are you going to fight back? Will you do whatever it takes, including taking up arms?

I don’t find any of this at all remarkable from the execrable Rall, a cartoonist of limited talent who has compensated for it by turning into a crank. What I do find remarkable is this softball interview from Ratigan and MSNBC of a man proposing an armed revolution in the United States after months of hyperbole from MSNBC about the supposed inherent violence and fascism of the Tea Party movement. In fact, Ratigan seems rather intrigued by the potential of such a proposal, while carefully dancing just short of an endorsement. Apparently, that Election Night meltdown wasn’t an isolated case at MSNBC after all.

Read This Interview With Ted Rall…

I’m all the way on the far left, as far as you can get, so I would like to see a completely leftist proletariat dictatorship…once you unleash the forces of revolution, anything could happen. You could end up with a right wing coup. Who knows where you’re going to end up? You could end up with a Christian theocracy. What the revolution does is create the physical and ideological space for the discussion to take place. Right now, we don’t really know what Americans want, but what we do know is that this system is currently broken, and what we need is to come in with a clean slate, start from scratch and undergo the difficult process that the United States has not undergone for over 200 years…

Ted Rall is a freakish loon with a book being released in the near future. Which explains a lot about his recent and current face time- sans relevance.

Glenn Beck (who stresses me out) has been saying that there will be an effort to get the TEA Partiers to strike when provoked and for us not to take the bait. I don’t know how much of what he says will happen but I see I’m not the only one getting worried. Today on his show he is supposed to drop a major bomb so, despite the fact I’m as stressed as I’ve been in a long time I’m taping it to watch when I get home.

BTW isn’t the right the one with all the guns?

CCRWM on November 9, 2010 at 12:37 PM

This is of course all just speculation since I actually agree with ernesto. There is no armed revolution coming.

catmman on November 9, 2010 at 12:22 PM

Not goin’ to need one! The people have started to find their voice again!

We have been nonchalant for many years, just lettin’ the gubmint go willy nilly. The American people have received a wake up call with the last extremest, liberal, congress!

Better than 60% told our congress critters we didn’t want them meddling in our healthcare, another 20% still aren’t sure, and they shoved it down their throats anyway! Not a good move! If you visit liberal sites, they’re pissed because it didn’t go far enough! No one liked it, yet Bummer, Pelosi, and Reid, decided to give us the bird!

We’re not goin’ to have a revolution any time soon. We are however, lookin’ at expanding the mental health care facilities in America in order for these losers to deal with their defeat! Some of ‘em are just BatShirt crazy with the idea the American voter doesn’t know what’s best for ‘em!

Sigh. No, the right is not the one with all the guns. The right has a very large portion of the semi-auto weaponry, a very small percentage of full-auto guns, and a scattering of various illegal explosive devices, many of which are “4th of July specials”.

And as you say we assume the ‘Right’ has all the guns, so you assume the entire military would side with the ‘proper’ side in a civil war.

How many state guard or National guard units would defect to support the ‘insurrectionists’? How many active military units? How many military folks would refuse to fire on American civilians?

State and National Guard units are more geared towards handling civil insurrection. Those same units though are made up of ‘locals’ so many would not be entirely reliable IMO.

jamie gumm on November 9, 2010 at 12:53 PM

I find Rall’s rhetoric disquieting enough, but it’s the venue that bothers me most. Sure, MSNBC is moonbattery personified, but mainstreaming civil war talk is downright dangerous. A major news outlet and representative of the MSM is contributing to an environment where the unthinkable becomes the thinkable. If this sort of buzz becomes more prevalent (and accepted), and partisan passions continue to be stoked and provoked, there will be blood at the polls in 2012. Nothing is more damaging to our form of government. Nothing.

Another thing: keep in mind when those on the fringe Left talk about ‘armed resistance’, they’re not talking about a stand-up fight with Grandpa’s varmint rifle. Think Weather Underground here. These guys like soft-target bombs.

NRA Lifer on November 9, 2010 at 1:31 PM

Leftist “revolutions” don’t have a good history of only taking themselves out. They always manage to kill a lot of innocent people along the way. A leftist revolution like Rall is calling for here would kill tens of millions of people – the areas that the revolution would start in don’t produce food or water or gasoline or electricity. Riots would start in every revolutionary city on the second day.

Ha We on November 9, 2010 at 2:34 PM

Revoltin’ Ted Rall is a truly nasty public figure.

But if you think about it, MSNBC too is so heavily invested in the ideology of the left, and their role in actively promoting a radical left wing agenda over the past several years, they simply cannot fathom the abject failure that is now theirs. They had thought process would bring them ultimate victory. But they surely did fail, because the American people have unquestionably given them all a swift kick in the tail.

Keep in mind that it is not just the Democrats in Congress and the Obama Administration that have been rejected by the voters . . . it is also their active acolytes and professional fellow-travelers in the media. MSNBC, by and large, has seen themselves in a role as the vanguard of that movement. This was a humiliating defeat for their “business plan.”

This election has suddenly made them all truly desperate because it instantly rendered them absolutely impotent.

The American people just suddenly stripped all the progressives — the media and the politicians alike — of all policy control. They have absolutely no power left, except to carp from the sidelines.

Once we get past the lame duck session, that’s it for the Obama agenda. The 20th century version of American liberalism will have finally breathed it last and expire.

And their reaction will swiftly move past the initial denial to anger . . . real frothing-at-the-mouth anger.

What may ultimately rise in its place, or fill the vacuum, we really don’t know yet.

But feeling that immediate anger, all the desperate lefties now will look for ways to start something! Some of them — like Rall — obviously sense that all they have left is to openly make desperate threats of violence and calls for revolution.

How pathetic can you get?

Trochilus on November 9, 2010 at 2:55 PM

It would take a MAJOR crisis event to jump start a leftist revolution in the USA, and even then there are not enough American revolutionary leftists here (at least not now) to be a sizable force. IMO it’s more likely that a societal collapse in Mexico followed by a revolution there would spill over the southern border aided by drug cartel weapons and cash, with the illegal reconquista population joining in the fun in the cities. THAT would be serious sh!t.

I’m sure he has friends that know how to make pipebombs. You think they’ll show up in the streets to a face-to-face confrontation? Since when has the left ever done that when using force? Very seldom.

They’d prefer to blow up buildings, cars and people anonymously. Or attribute it to some fruity name they’ll give their “cause”.

A Mexico meltdown, that’s what the FEMA camps are for LOL!

There is no way that the Establishment on the Left of Right will let anyone from the outside come in to usurp what they believe is their power to wield. They set the playing field they decide who gets to play on it. They may humor the anarchist but that’s about it.

But I would buy tickets to see Ted and Dylan, give it the old college try.

Dr Evil on November 9, 2010 at 3:04 PM

“They have more money than we do, they have more money than we do.”

What a moron. I am sick of all of these socialists crying about the money. If they want money, stop embracing socialism; it kills the economy.

Of course the violence will come from the left; it always does. Just look at the difference between the Tea Partiers (and how peaceful they were) and the union thugs who were bussed in (and how non-peaceful they were).

I say let them create the People’s Republic of New England and the People’s Republic of California. We will keep the United States of America here in the middle and they can then swim in the stew of their own socialist dystopia without those of us who produce to continuously bail them out and save them.

Christian fundamentalists, the millennial end-of-theworlders obsessed with the Left Behind series…(blah-blah-blah)

…in short, “anyone who doesn’t agree with me pretty precisely”…typical totalitarian egocentrism….

…one only has to be familiar with Mr. Rall’s “cartoons” to have the measure of the manchild himself…they’re invariably childish renderings with hateful, paranoid screeds nestled in dialogue bubbles. He’s as far along the political color-wheel toward the “red-band” as he seems to think that Tea Party attendees, Republicans, anyone remotely religious and anyone not among his Facebook “followers” list are in his imagination on their end of the spectrum.

The disturbing thing is that this person on MSNBC seems to start his little song and dance out by saying that a revolution is actually necessary…it’s just that his spineless and otherwise limp-jointed contemporaries don’t know how to proceed…he establishes revolution as a certain and inevitable good….

…sheesh…imagine how angry the Left’d be after they’d gotten whalloped in TWO elections!

…this is truly disturbing, but not the least bit unexpected…the egotists of the Left can always be counted upon to turn to revolution in one guise or another to solve problems…that they cause many more than they solve never seems beneath their notice….

I firmly believe that any attempt for a hostile take over of America will come from the hard left. They have shown their cards, America rejects them. They will do what they can to stir the pot of discontent, they will play races against all of America, a bid to build ranks, and add to confusion.
It has worked in many a nation, I pray it will not work here.
I have a hard time believing that so called Americans have such a problem with America. Why do they wish to destroy what we have worked so hard to achieve?

I think Andrew Jackson had the best response to threats of revolution.

South Carolina politicians were claiming that states had the right to reject (nullify) a federal law which they believed was bad. After hearing their pathetic, poorly-cloaked threats for the umpteenth time, Jackson told a S.C. congressman to take a message to the nullifiers in his state —

“Tell them that they can talk and write resolutions and print threats to their hearts’ content. But if one drop of blood is shed there in opposition to the laws of the United States, I will hang the first man I can get my hands on to the first tree I can find.”
