Tea party power: Boehner to include freshman on House Republican leadership team

posted at 9:44 pm on November 8, 2010 by Allahpundit

Smart move for him. Is it smart for the frosh?

In a nod to the strength of their newest constituency, House Republican leaders will grant incoming freshmen more say in the party’s direction than most first-term lawmakers receive.

House Republican Leader John Boehner and his No. 2, party Whip Eric Cantor, will notify newly elected Republicans Tuesday that one member of their class will get a seat at the leadership table and another two will be given spots on the Steering Committee, which decides committee assignments and chairmanships in the new Congress…

Members of the class will run for these positions, along with those of class president and freshman representative to the policy committee, on Nov. 17 after the entire Republican caucus selects its leaders for the next two years, according to the letter.

Kristi Noem, who’s frequently compared to Palin, is reportedly interested in the leadership position and has the support of Boehner, Cantor, et al. Makes sense for the GOP brain trust: She has tea party cred, knocked off a high profile Democratic up-and-comer in Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin, and is plenty telegenic and well-spoken enough to serve as a spokesman for the new Republican class in TV interviews. More importantly, though, as the Times puts it, Boehner wants to ensure that the new crop is “not tempted into immediate acts of rebellion.” That is to say, they don’t want freshmen tea partiers wandering off and becoming a thorn in the leadership’s side, either by forming their own caucus or joining Bachmann’s tea-party caucus; giving them a voice in the top group is a way to reduce that pressure, and of course to purchase some political cover on tough votes. If they end up bringing something to the floor that makes tea partiers howl, now they can point to Noem or whoever and say, “Hey, she’s partly responsible too.”

Via Dakota Voice, here she is in action last week. Exit question: Is this better for Boehner or better for the incoming reps?

It was the Democrats’ overreach and outrageous trampling of the principle notions set forth in our founding documents that created the Tea Party.

So, actually it was the irrational, overheated socialist stampede of the Democrats in control that created the backlash against themselves and spawned the Tea Party, just as the jackassery of King George inspired the original Tea Party in Boston Harbor some 14 years ago, or something.

There’s nothing “establishment” about Kristi Noem — yet. How well she performs as a Tea Party candidate depends on how well the memory foam of a political career fits her backside, if you catch my drift.

As Sigmund Freud opined, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” Maybe this really is nothing more than Boehner’s overture to Tea Partiers. If there is something sinister going on here, we have two years to set Noem straight.

Emily, bblue is correct. Once you get caught up in the undertow of the “real world”, it is extremely hard to change course against the current.

I speak from experience; I did a year at VPI, then quit “for a while” to go to work and “start a life” with a girl who now means less to me than Rosie O’Donnell does.

Now it is 29 years later, and I am working my fingers to the bone to stay afloat. I don’t regret my choices because had I followed a different course, I would have never wed my better half most likely; however, I cannot say that I didn’t make a HUGE mistake when I walked off the campus for the last time.

It was a stupid move, period.

I was stupid.

Don’t be stupid, especially in this world — which more and more requires a prescribed skill set to be employed.

If Palin and O’donnell, and Bachman are, uh, “dumb.” I imagine Congresswoman Noem is going to be the “dumbest.”

cpaulus on November 9, 2010 at 12:04 AM

Really? Do you have a link? Interesting. I never heard or read about Romney endorsing/supporting her. A big deal was made of Noem scoffing at a comparison to Sarah Palin and wanting or needing her endorsement.

conservative pilgrim on November 8, 2010 at 10:15 PM

He endorsed Kristi last June.

But that can’t be why Sarah didn’t endorse her. She endorsed Nikki Hayley after he’d already done so much earlier with no problem.

Noem’s got that Maggie Gyllenhaal look going for her, though Noem’s got better hair. Maggie’d have to do some work, but she should probably pull it off with a A effort.

Why is everyone who knows how to properly maintain and operate a firearm “gun-crazy” according to the UK? Is it because the UK has given up on punishing criminals both as a criminal matter as well as a personal one?

The redcoats would be ashamed of their descendants.

BKennedy on November 9, 2010 at 5:40 AM

TRUST……….if Romney is a fan and Palin didn’t endorse her and she doesn’t hang with the other Tea Party gals…….and the co-opting has begun then I am a tad cautious about her……

That being said…..she is HOLY FREAKING COW hot (but so was Delilah)!

PappyD61 on November 9, 2010 at 7:09 AM

Noem-licious!

WordsMatter on November 9, 2010 at 7:23 AM

Nobody out here in the great unpopulated part of the country cares about traffic tickets. Speed limits and stop signs in the middle of nowhere are ignored like they’re invisible. That’s why this issue wasn’t important to the voters. Glad to see the elites are willing to share some power, if they really do. They’re going to need all the strength and will they can muster to fight the Won.

Apparently she loves tho bow hunt as well. That makes her extra dangerous since she likes to go stealth.

mizflame98 on November 9, 2010 at 7:53 AM

Is this really a big deal? Aren’t we all on the same side? This past week I’ve watched Boehner lay out an agenda that involves immediately cutting spending and working towards a repeal of obamacare. I’d say the tea party has already won if the Republican leadership has gotten the message.

Caiwyn on November 8, 2010 at 10:25 PM

Cutting spending to 2008 levels won’t save us from the economic disaster. We need to cut spending back to 1988 levels at least. With that said, I feel really uncomfortable that Boehner is just jumping in like he’s in the bag for Speaker. He has to be voted into that position first. I think the house vote someone else in as Speaker.

mizflame98 on November 9, 2010 at 8:02 AM

Applaud the freshman Rep. Noam from s.D. she is telling U.S. the stuff we need to support. Less government but a goverment that functions as our forfathers designed it. The current Leaders are facing reality and letting the young move U.S. in the right direction with only a modicum of advice to assure they do not become derailed.

Such rehteroic is what has made the county stand out for the last 200 + years and we do not want it to be turned into another Europe or Socialized country.

Therefore, the public is finially had enough and we are not going to take it any more.

The youth that has read the hidden history books are goint to guide U.S. out of the dark and to the light.

Her hair makes Pence, Romney and Bieber jealous.

mockmook on November 8, 2010 at 10:29 PM

I don’t follow hair fashions, but I’m guessing in 6 months every 30 year old conservative lady is wearing her hair like this. Which is just fine with me.

She’s lovely. Speaks well and seems to be all business. Hope she doesn’t stumble into the Fox News “You’re Pretty, Stand Right Here” trap.

Jaibones on November 9, 2010 at 8:12 AM

FWIW, I believe I also read that Noem is a 4H leader, and their family shows Quarter horses. That scores points in my book. More voices from fly-over country.

humdinger on November 9, 2010 at 8:23 AM

Beware what I call “Shiny Object Syndrome” (SOS). It`s how America ended up with Obama.

ThePrez on November 8, 2010 at 9:56 PM

Agreed. Let’s stick to business … she’s not posing in a bikini, boys. She wants to help craft tax policy.

Noem has received more than 20 speeding tickets over the past 21 years.[29] Noem had incurred three stop sign violations, two seat belt violations, no driver’s license, six notices for failure to appear in court and two arrest warrants. Noem said, “I’m not proud of my driving record, but [I've] been working hard to be a better example to young kids and young drivers out there.” She has fully paid off her fines and penalties.

I SUPPORT HER EVEN MORE NOW.

MadisonConservative on November 8, 2010 at 9:59 PM

I’m from South Dakota. Now you’re just being an ass, dude.

gryphon202 on November 8, 2010 at 10:09 PM

Now, now. Let’s not get all wound up over some speeding tickets. Kristi is a busy Mom, lives out in the country, speeding tickets could happen to anyone over a driving career.

It’s parking tickets that piss me off. Guarantee Our Idiot President has 200 unpaid parking tickets in Chicago that magically disappeared when he got into the State Senate.

Jaibones on November 9, 2010 at 8:25 AM

This. It’s one thing to say she’s lovely, but she’s not running on her looks. Maybe it’s me, but I prefer a respectful acknowledgement of our politicians’ attractiveness and not the typical Hot Air beat off threads reserved for celebutards and Russian spies. I wrote about this once, in fact…

With that said, she is quite pretty and seems solid. Let’s hope she sticks with the principles she espoused on the trail. (Odd she didn’t garner a Palin endorsement, though.)

Bee on November 9, 2010 at 8:35 AM

Maybe……..Maybe some of her testosterone will rub off on the “young guns” with no cajones!!

PappyD61 on November 9, 2010 at 8:35 AM

Via Dakota Voice, here she is in action last week. Exit question: Is this better for Boehner or better for the incoming reps?

That depends on whether the freshman Noem is intimidated by the veterans, or will freely object to their agenda when appropriate.

The cynic would say this is a move by the leadership to try and assimilate those from the tea party wave while the optimist would see this as the leadership throwing a much deserved bone to the teap party class, especially since they plan to line up against Bachmann.

I think they’re throwing a bone to the Tea Party, they think Bachmann is too controversial and inflammatory with her rhetoric to be in a leadrship position but they don’t want to alienate teapartiers entirely. It’s up to Noem now to keep her wits about her.

Still, I would prefer the agenda be directed by Tea Party ideals so if Noem sees something she doesn’t like, she needs to speak up. I think the Tea Party Caucus might actually be a good idea now.

Daemonocracy on November 9, 2010 at 8:50 AM

The tea party dreams will all end here. This is all kabuki theatre unless these folks are ushered out.

” If Boehner lets Bachus take over the Financial Services Committee, the Tea Partiers, and anybody else hoping for fiscal sanity, will know that he does in fact intend to let them down, as quickly as possible.”
