Gibbs to India: Not Without My Press Corps

posted at 2:15 pm on November 8, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Poor Robert Gibbs.  For the second time in the past year, he has had to resort to threats against his hosts to remove Barack Obama from an event, this time in India, where Indian officials attempted to limit the number of reporters allowed into a photo op with Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.  Gibbs literally had to stick his foot in the door to force the issue:

The Washington Post’s Scott Wilson—who was on White House pool duty Monday and filed the report for theWhite House press corps—wrote that “Gibbs announced loudly and persistently on steps of Hyderabad House that he would pull” President Obama out of the meeting “unless ‘the White House 8,’ as we’ve come to be known, were all allowed in.”

As the discussion continued, Gibbs grew more animated.

“At one point, Gibbs literally had his foot lodged in the closing front door, asking if the Indian security officials pushing hard to shut it were going to break his foot,” Wilson continued. “More angry words ensued, and after Gibbs convinced them, through high volume and repetition, that he was serious” about pulling Obama, the press secretary had the security retinue’s full attention.

Gibbs’ intervention worked: The Indian officials eventually allowed the full American press delegation into the event, along with a larger group of Indian reporters.

This must be what’s known as smart power around the Obama White House, throwing one’s weight around in another country to ensure that more American reporters can take pictures of two men sitting in chairs.  As Tommy Christopher reports at Mediaite, that’s all that any of them got from the two world leaders in the end anyway:

After all that, of course, it turns out Gibbs risked his foot for a 60-second photo op, during which neither world leader uttered a syllable.

I asked Gibbs if he had any comment about the incident, and how his foot was feeling. His response (via email):

“We had an agreement to get a certain number of people in to the meeting. We simply stood up for that which is our job.  Thankfully they didn’t take me up on closing the door and breaking my foot.”

Tommy thinks that this was an impressive moment for Gibbs, standing up for the press corps.  I agree that Gibbs tried his best to help out American reporters in gaining better access.  However, isn’t there a sense of proportion missing here?  If it was a press conference in which both leaders would be speaking and answering questions, then certainly Gibbs should demand access for the White House press corps.  But isn’t a pool report good enough for a 60-second photo op while both leaders remain mute?  The Indian officials must have wondered why Gibbs was making such a fuss — and the rest of us should wonder whether Obama would have meekly complied with his press secretary’s demand to insult Singh and India by walking out had India called Gibbs’ bluff.

At least we won’t get a sequel to this episode titled Not Without My Foot.

He wouldn’t have had to. The Indian prime minister likely would have forced his people to let the other reporters in.

But isn’t a pool report good enough for a 60-second photo op while both leaders remain mute?

It often is when world leaders visit the White House.
Sometimes, an official WH photo is all we get of the meeting.

The fact that they were trying to shut Gibbs and the reports out is a sign of disrespect, and the fact that he fought to get them back in is actually a good thing, in term of our image.

I don’t give a damn if we insult Singh or India or whatever. We are America and if an official for our President wants our reporters in a room with him, they damn well better let those reporters in. Could you imagine the embarrassment of a story of Gibbs being a push-over to Indian security?

Its about image, and Gibbs, intentionally or not, succeeded in making ours look a little bit more powerful.

When Obama was bowing left and right and deferring to every leader in the world, isn’t it Bush’s old-fashioned arrogance that we were looking for?

Obama could use a little more arrogance in international relations, if you ask me.

jimmy the notable on November 8, 2010 at 2:58 PM

As I read the story, it wasn’t that they were barring ALL of the WH press corps, but would only let in 5 reporters instead of all of “the Washington 8″ as the story says.

If that’s true, this makes Gibbs move mere pettiness.

Or am I reading this wrong?

catmman on November 8, 2010 at 3:01 PM

If the original deal was for 8, and only after they flew all the way there it was cut to 5, he should have argued to get them to honor the original deal.

Did he have to be such a douche about it? Maybe, maybe not.

jimmy the notable on November 8, 2010 at 2:58 PM

I beg to differ. Not bowing to other leaders isn’t a sign of arrogance. It’s simply the proper protocol and at worst, an objective recognition of the place the US holds in the world.

One thing striking about Obama’s bows is that not even other foreign leaders, even those not considered “arrogant,” refused to bow to the same people Obama lowered himself for, proving that this wasn’t just a case of Obama being “not Bush.”

Yes, we want Obama to assert himself a bit more, but we don’t want or need his arrogance. That serves no purpose, for him, or the country he’s supposed to be representing.

Esthier on November 8, 2010 at 3:05 PM

This is the result of an inept administration that can’t seem to do anything well besides campaign, and they’ve even lost their magic on that front as well.

I dont know…..it kind of looked like India representatives were at fault here. Dont they go into these things with agreements on everything? If that was the case and Gibbs was just forcing them to honor a previously reached agreement on pool reporters access, then, good. More power to him. You cant allow a weird power play by Indian Officials, or even if it was a misunderstanding, you cant be pushed around and have the game changed on you. It would look awfully weak and a bit incompetent of the President’s staff.

I support Gibbs’ demanding Indian officials live up to the deal that was made, no matter how trivial it may seem.

Gibbsy just didn’t want to choose which 38% of the WH Press Corps would be omitted. Even though this administration is comfortable choosing winners vs. losers, Gibbs still has to work with the disfavored 38%. I.e., those 3 reporters would have payback power, unlike individual Americans who don’t.

If the price of loyalty from your WH 8 is a bruised foot and comes wrapped in an opportunity to put down some Indian guy you dislike anyway, Gibbs ain’t no dummy.

I am so terrified at Barack Hussein Obama’s, Gibbs, et al, and their Imperialist, Fascist, militant, dictatorship and Hegemonist domination of the world.

I lie in fear at night, unable to sleep.

I dredd every hour of every day, terrified at which horrific form of oppressiion will be perpetraed upon me, my wife, our children, and the rest of the world, at the hands of The Savior, the Messiah, The One, Mister Hope and Change, Barack Hussein Obama and his henchmen.

This president has violated the civil rights of so many unknown, annonymous people, such as in his ordering, and the carrying out of those orders, to bomb and kill peole in Pakisant via unmanned drones.

Here is mister wonderful, who wanted Kalhid Sheik Mohammad, and other vile living organisms of the humanoid variety, tried in a civilian court in New York City, NY, USA, at great security risk to citizens and others in NYC, as well as great expense, and the risk of the court proceedings leading to the revelation of secret intelligence information, turning around and violating the rights of those victims in Pakistan who have no trial, who weren’t proven guilty in a court of law, etc,. but he just orders their assassination any way?

Is that action part of his support of abortion of innocent people, killing people without a trial, all legal and with no one making a stink?

It is nice to see that Gibbs is putting his foot down, and throwing his weight around. That is keeping within character for Gibbs.

He is the ones they have been waiting for. Not because he is smart, strong, decisive, etc. But because he gives good speeches when reading a teleprompter. Liberals look at this as his speeches will convince the country to believe in socialism. He couldn’t so now they assume that we are idiots and they are smart, sooooo…. He needs to give better speeches to us. The fact that socialism fails everytime doesn’t even enter their minds.

You don’t have to scream and threaten, morons. Especially not in Asia. They may have “caved” at the end, but with members of our delegation loudly and publicly losing control first, it’s clear to everyone over there (and here) who won.

You don’t even have to tell them he’s not coming, Gibbsy. You just wait. Maybe they’ll even seat their PM. Continue waiting. Don’t send messages. Act like everything is in order. Eventually they’ll come to you, humiliated, and ask what the problem is.
