Great, great news: Pelosi might stay on as House minority leader

posted at 7:43 pm on November 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

You didn’t think the thirst for power would fade overnight, did you? Why, she reminds me of Lisa Murkowski, except –

I was going to say, “except more obnoxious.” But you know, at this point, I’m really not sure.

High-level Democratic sources in the House tell ABC News Pelosi is seriously considering staying in Congress and running for the position of minority leader.

Pelosi is methodically calling every Democratic House member who won on Tuesday, as well as many who lost, sources tell ABC News. In the process, she is weighing her options and gauging her support.

Some of Pelosi’s closest allies are encouraging her to stay and to lead the Democratic effort to win back their majority. Those encouraging her are arguing, in part, that she can unify the progressives in the caucus, and more importantly, that nobody in the House can raise money for the next campaign better than Pelosi.

She and Hoyer met for an hour and a half yesterday. He’s said he won’t challenge her for minority leader, but hmmmmm:

“Yeah, it’s on,” one senior Democratic aide who was aware of Pelosi’s calls said. “Game on.”

The chief of staff to another lawmaker said Pelosi is “calling members to see where they are regarding her or with Hoyer.”

A senior aide to one California Democrat marveled at the possibility that Pelosi would run again.

“Take a step back, Nancy, and think,” the aide said. “It’s ridiculous if you think that you should still be the leader of our party.”

Blue Dogs like Heath Shuler and Jim Matheson are making noise about opposing her, but they’re now vastly outnumbered by lefties in the caucus. I’m sitting here trying to figure out what strategic angle I might be missing in all this, because it strikes me as simply impossible that this dead weight might actually be retained as the face of the Democratic House caucus. Her favorable rating among independents as of Sunday was eight percent. The GOP just won 60+ seats thanks to a national campaign targeting her above all other Democrats (Obama included) as the archvillain of the Beltway. The progressive caucus can’t possibly be so stupidly loyal as to saddle the party with her toxic numbers for the next House election in 2012 too — especially given their endless crowing vis-a-vis Palin and centrists. To put it in perspective, Palin’s favorables with Democrats are roughly the same as Pelosi’s are with independents. And yet here they are, all set to crown Nancy as the once and future leader of the pack. We can’t possibly be this lucky.

Exit question: Time for a phone call from The One from atop Mount Olympus urging her to consider retirement?

I urge the democrat party to retain Ms. Pelosi as minority leader. If anyone in the party knows how to obstruct the republicans it would be the former speaker.

If the democrats want to remain relevant, they will need Ms Pelosi actively engaged, actively speaking up, actively appearing on all the sunday TV shows outlining how the GOP is leading the country to ruin.

If she loses her run for senate minority leader then she will retire. But this will test out to see if all those Democrats that claimed that they would vote against her becoming Speaker of the House will live up to their promise.

I wonder if any Blue Dogs would leave the party over this and try their luck next time in a GOP primary.

Mark1971 on November 4, 2010 at 7:51 PM

Just more evidence the Dems just don’t get it and the results of the election, to them, are simply – “Meh, whatever”.

If she had any real integrity, she would bow out NOW, she wouldn’t wait for anything. She would take responsibility for her losing the House. Oh, she can crow all day about their ‘achievements’ but one achievement of a Speaker is to keep her party in power. She failed miserably.

Those left shouldn’t be letting her make phone calls or anything else. If they had any smarts, they would be getting rid of her already. If for no other reason than to play to the electorate – “See, we heard you. Look what we’re doing.” kind of thing.

This kind of stuff is heartening. It shows the Dems don’t ‘get it’ and if the Republicans can make a go, then the Dems are toast in 2012.

Rush likes to say liberals are liberals first and everything else second. The progressives are not going to feel any less arrogant about themselves and by extension Pelosi than they did before Nov 2. It’s silly to think that they are going to have a “come to Jesus” moment and moderate. It further tells bluedogs that no matter what you think you are always just votes for the progressives and not part of it’s “diversity” of opinion.

Jim Matheson are making noise

Noise is right. Matheson is all bark and no bite. He’s just playing this up thanks to the close election here.

Matheson kept touting that he voted against Obamacare despite voting for the despicable “deem and pass” maneuver which made Obamacare’s passage possible. He tried lying about that vote and enough believed the lie (too bad Philpot didn’t nail him on that one).

Matheson knew supporting ‘demon pass’ would ensure passage of Obamacare and allow him to spin his record on it.

He’s just another Pelosi lap dog.

FloatingRock on November 4, 2010 at 8:08 PM

She’ll win it if she wants it.

The Dems weren’t voting for her as speaker because they liked her and thought she was doing a great job.

They were voting for her as speaker because she had a PAC that would max out contributions to their election campaigns (and, at one point, had two PACs, which was illegal, maxing out contributions to their campaigns).

As long as she’s dropping big bucks into their coffers, she’ll have whatever she wants.

Loyalty as a virtue amongst these heathens is akin to honor amongst thieves. I will say that Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the other baby killing cadre around there is probably keeping her around to protect “choice.”

Considering abortion, Americans United for Life targeted several Dems for the reaper;

Of the twelve key Congressional districts targeted by AUL Action, your efforts helped us win in 11.
After the defeat our movement suffered as a result of the pro-abortion health care bill, yesterday was a stunning reversal.
That’s a 92% success rate – a staggering achievement for Life. We also reached our $125,000 fundraising goal, and even surpassed it, thanks to you!

So, on the abortion front, Wasserman Schultz needs all the help she can get. My 2c

Pelosi is just testing the waters to see if she can find a way to keep her brand new over-priced office space in San Francisco, if she decides to stay in Congress.

http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-06-15/bay-area/21910882_1_move-offices-house-speaker-nancy-pelosi-new-office

Tax Payers spend $18,736 per month for Pelosi’s new San Francisco office.

Pelosi’s office rent is nearly double the next-highest rent in the House: Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., pays $10,600 a month for his Manhattan office

Pelosi justified her expensive new office space because:

As speaker, the security needs are are different. The new San Francisco Federal Building offers enhanced security features, which were a major factor in the decision to move offices.

Pelosi would probably argue that she would need enhanced security as a Minority Leader too.

Once you’ve had the fancy office and airplane, it must be very hard to lose them.

r keller on November 4, 2010 at 8:53 PM

I would love to have her stay and be elected minority leader. Besides all the many gifts itemized above that she would bring to the right, there are two additional. One, it would prove in national election, you vote for a party and not merely the individual. How many Dems who managed to survive claimed to be conservative and opposed to Pelosi. It lends credence to the argument that party matters as much as the individual in national elections. Two, it would justify the Republicans holding a public hearing to lay to rest, once and for all, just what Pelosi knew about waterboarding and when she knew it. I would pay to see that one.
