Esquire: Wow, Obama’s really lost his mojo

posted at 1:35 pm on November 4, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Tom Junod’s eulogy for Barack Obama’s mystique in Esquire indulges in overwrought excuse-seeking and ultimately misses the obvious conclusion, but it’s notable for recognition of one central fact: Obama as President has been the Incredible Shrinking Man, and in more than one way.  Not only does Obama seem incapable of offering soaring rhetoric that engages and inspires millions now –as Junod puts it, he no longer seems born to fill stadiums like a rock star — but the rhetoric Obama does offer makes it seem that Obama can’t even engage himself.  As the Anointed Obama vanishes, all that’s left is a politician who looks very much like he’s in over his head:

Now his gift has all but deserted him, and all that prevents the story from becoming tragic is his own apparent refusal to be affected by it. There are many explanations for why he seems diminished by the power of his own office, from the vestigial racism of the American public to his misreading of his own mandate. But those are political explanations of a predicament that demands musical metaphors. Imagine Miles Davis losing not just his ability to blow but also his mystique; he might get his chops back, but the aura would be more difficult to restore, along with his ability to captivate audiences by turning his back on them. Of course, Obama has never turned his back on us, but so many Americans have turned their backs on him that it amounts to The Anointed One, as he is sometimes referred, being stripped of something that can never return: his anointment. And without it — without his air of destiny, without the idea of Obama augmenting his actuality — the rooms he used to occupy so effortlessly have changed dimensions on him, until at times he might as well be speaking from the bottom of a well. Does anyone remember the speech he gave at West Point, when he escalated the war in Afghanistan after six weeks of slow-ketchup decision making? He was all alone on that stage, and he looked all alone and somehow outnumbered by the space that surrounded him. It was the first time he was betrayed by his own stagecraft. It was the first time the enormity of his decision dwarfed the eloquence he found to express it, and he has never again looked like a man born to fill stadiums.

All this was in play on Wednesday, at the press conference he gave after the bloodletting of the mid-term elections. Could anyone have ever imagined that Barack Obama would be made to look inauthentic by the sloppy last-call tears of someone like John Boehner? Could anyone have ever imagined that he’d be in a room of reporters who wanted something from him — that he wouldn’t be able to deliver? The man acclaimed as the most gifted communicator of our age had to be prodded into admitting “it feels bad,” and after nearly an hour of prolix boilerplate offered but one takeaway line, “The Slurpee is a delicious drink,” before warming up and saying that he was going to invite Boehner to a Slurpee Summit. Indeed, the press conference was so painfully incommensurate to its historical moment that one had to wonder if he knew it — if he knew that even on this observance of loss he was losing his audience; if he knew that that he had lost not only the House of Representatives and a broad swath of the American electorate but his ability to talk his way into or out of anything; if the great singer knew that he had lost his voice. …

In less than two years he had gone from sounding like a man who could always count on his ability to strum the mystic chords of memory to a man who, no matter what he said, sounded like a politician, and one in over his head at that. Now he sounded like a man who had already realized that he had lost more than he imagined he could but was just starting to understand that he was never going to get it back. He wasn’t going to cry about it — leave that to the Republicans — but he was going to take stock, and that may have represented a beginning of sorts, even if it was also clearly an end.

Ah, yes, the “vestigial racism” excuse, which shows that Junod watches his share of MSNBC and its curiously monochromatic lineup.  No one who offers this threadbare rationalization seems to explain how Obama got elected by a majority in 2008 by attracting the same people who apparently are afflicted with this “vestigial racism” now.  This excuse has been used to explain voter dissatisfaction with Democrats ever since Scott Brown won in Massachusetts, offered usually in the casual, off-hand manner used here by Junod with absolutely no substantiation whatsoever.  It’s the elbow nudge to the ribs among the Left that says, “You know that all those people are racists,” which is a form of bigotry in and of itself.

Junod comes close to one of the reasons why Obama is in over his head, which is his misreading of the mandate from the 2008 election, but whiffs completely on the underlying problem.  Obama got elected by saying that change was more important than competence, and he has proven himself massively wrong.  Obama is in over his head, and it shows.  It showed on the campaign trail for those who bothered to look for it rather than cheerlead Obama’s narrative.   Why should anyone be surprised when a man with no executive, economic, military, or diplomatic experience who had only three years in the Senate starts flailing when elected President?

If the media had vetted him as a politician rather than a rock star, perhaps people like Junod might be a little less surprised to find an emperor with no clothes instead of an Anointed One.

Isn’t it interesting that the people who are accused of being “racist” are the very ones who were able to look PAST the color of this man’s skin to figure out who and what he was/is?

It seems to me that the racist ones are the ones who ONLY saw his skin color and considered themselves enlightened to vote for him SOLELY based on that consideration.

Silly me – I actually thought that was what Martin Luther King was alluding to in his “I Have a Dream” speech; that one day people would look PAST the color of his childrens’ skin to the person within before passing judgment on them.

Despite my joy in pissing on Obama for just about any reason, let me just say that I have no idea how this trip could cost this much. It seems almost impossible.

Seen the ‘private tunnel’ story? US Military to Install Bomb-proof, Air-conditioned, Over Ground Tunnel For Obama in India

“The tunnel would be a kilometre long and measure 12ft by 12ft — enough to let Obama’s cavalcade pass through. The tunnel would be centrally air-conditioned, fitted with close-circuit television cameras, and will be heavily guarded at every point, including, of course, its entry and exit.”

I have been working in education for a while and I have always been interested in the “cool kids” phenomenon. I have noticed that starting in kindergarten you can pick who is going to be in the cool kids group later on. Basically these are the kids who think they are hot snot at 5 years old and continue to think that all through school. Now after they graduate these kids sometimes go on to make something of themselves, but often they “lose their mojo”.

The ones who keep their mojo do so because they either pick a career path that is based on appearances or popularity or because they actually have intelligence or a talent for something, and know how to work hard.

We have here a president who picked a career path based on appearances and popularity that somehow landed him in a job that required hard work, talent and intelligence.

No wonder the rest of the cool kids are abandoning him like so many rats off a sinking ship. If there is anything the cool kids know, besides how to make life difficult for people not in their group, it’s how to cut a wounded member out of the herd before he takes the whole group down.

In a time of financial panic and unemployment in the US, the people elected someone to resolve the problem. A man who handled his personal finances so badly that his credit card was refused at a car rental agency when he went to a Dem convention. Someone who had limited private employment in his background. So once elected, he opted not to work on the unemployment but took on a year long effort to remake health care for the US. Someone so knowledgeable about insurance that he was not aware that his liability only car insurance did not provide collision coverage on his car. Then the public sat back and waited for all the US problems to be solved. He knows so little about business that he stated during his press event that “if the 1099 requirement is a drag”, then he would look at suspending that requirement. He didn’t know in advance? Surprise!

In reference to how 0′s India trip could cost so much, wouldn’t 34 warships sent to India cost a little bit? This is nothing but a paid 10 day vacation as the only thing of concern for India was a trade agreement which 0 has indicated he would not be discussing while in India. It does cost a lot to take 3,000 people on a ten day vacation.

New House Judiciary Chairman to Obama: Prepare for Investigations

Veteran Congressman will head influential House Judiciary Committee
By Jim Forsyth
Thursday, November 4, 2010

The San Antonio Congressman who is in line to become chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee is promising ‘a number of investigations and oversight committee actions’ which he vows will ‘hold the administration accountable,’ 1200 WOAI news reports.

Veteran Republican Lamar Smith, a Yale graduate and social conservative who grew up in the brush country of south Texas which is now transit point for illegal immigrants and drugs, said in a news conference that a number of issues will come into the sights of his committee when he takes the chairmanship in January, from cracking down on child pornography to taking the Obama Administration to task for failing to do enough to protect the southern border.

Smith says it is his Constitutional duty.

Obama got himself into this mess because he was never qualified to be President. Not because of his melanin level, but because of his lack of relevant experience.

His community-organizer background leads to a lot of decision by committee, with a healthy share of confused lines of authority thrown in. In Obama’s WH, Gibbs, Rahm, Axelrod, and Jarrett all have a lot to say about every policy.

Obama’s readiness to leave his legacy in the hands of Reid and Pelosi didn’t help. Nobody seriously thinks that they are great leaders. They’re just good at twisting arms for votes.

Drudge had a story this morning reporting that the Obamas (and the thousands of “friends” accompanying them to India) are taking 34 U.S. Navy destroyers along for protection (in addition to the multiple aircraft, including 2 heliocopters that are reportedly being disassembled here, and then will be transported to India and reassembled there).

It’s a ludicrous waste of money and resources, for a totally unnecessary trip. There is no excuse for this level of extravagance even in good economic times; during our nation’s current difficulties, it reeks of hubris and a “royal” sense of entitlement.

AZCoyote on November 4, 2010 at 3:03 PM

Obama is in over his head, and it shows.

But he will always be a vicious, malicious, narcissistic Utopian idealist, on a mission.

If the media had vetted him as a politician rather than a rock star, perhaps people like Junod might be a little less surprised to find an emperor with no clothes instead of an Anointed One.

May they be plagued and destroyed even more than they have the country by being derelict in their duties and idealistic first and foremost.

Where in the federal budget do these hundreds of millions come from to pay for Obama’s junket to India? An unlimited slush fund? Or does someone in Congress have to approve this insanity?

LASue on November 4, 2010 at 2:37 PM

I’d like to have an answer to that question too. There seems to be no limit to what the White House is willing to spend (of our money) on these ridiculous trips.

With the Fed running the printing presses 24/7, I can understand why someone of Obama’s limited intellect thinks money means nothing (there’s always trillions more to spend as long as the Fed doesn’t run out of green ink, right Barry?), but someone in Congress really needs to be putting a stop to this nonsense.

AZCoyote on November 4, 2010 at 3:03 PM

Exactly so. After MO’s Spanish extravaganza this is absolutely stunning. Nothing, absolutely nothing puts a dent in the Obies’ sense of entitlement. They’re impervious to any criticism on this front because they seem to think they are “owed.”

Unless the Republicans call him on the rug for it I suspect this sort of ‘conspicuous consumption’ will ratchet up over the next two years as he is essentially a lame duck president. My opinion is that he lacks the courage to duke it out with the opposition. He’s been so cossetted and coddled that he will probably retreat and make himself scarce from DC. That actually is not too different from what he’s been doing the last two years.

Bottom line is that someone needs to reign this sort of absurd, unnecessary spending in. It’s an insult to American citizens in every way.

Cody1991 on November 4, 2010 at 3:19 PM

Plugs is probably going along on the same trip. Isn’t he always at 0′s right elbow? My question, if Pelosi is still speaker thru December does that mean she is still in line for succession?

It is my understanding that presidential trips budget is unlimited. And that no one else has any say about when and how it is spent. I hope some brilliant person tells me I am wrong and shows me where it it limited.

This clown never had any Mojo. He was carried around on a pillow his entire adult life by white liberals, who bestowed education, wealth, and power on him as a means to prove their own “color-blindness” to their fellow libs. (Remember Biden’s “he’s one of the CLEAN ones,” gaffe?)

The more Obama played like a tough, inner-city champion — i.e. a “community organizer” — the more they loved him… and called him a “Man of the People.” His ascension was THEIR ascension.

Now that they know Obama is an empty suit who played them for the fools that they are, the libs will turn on him… and poor Michelle is going learn just how “mean” a country America really can be when you try rip Her off.

I think it’s less about Obama losing his “gift” than the liberals losing theirs. They viewed him as the ultimate prize for progressives: a member of their “victim” class who’s young, hip and doesn’t sound like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, and has the credentials of Harvard and Columbia (although his discourse reveals some big holes in his education.) He was going to be the next John F. Kennedy, the foundation of the New Camelot.

Alas, the people tired of the new, cool guy when he turned out to be a stuffy lecturer, hypocrite and wildly profligate with the nation’s credit card; and the left lost its messiah, its gift as it were.
