Great news: Alaska write-in clusterfark could take weeks
posted at 5:35 pm on November 3, 2010 by Allahpundit
Believe it or not, initially they planned to wait two weeks to even start counting the write-ins. Now, mercifully, they’re pushing it up to next week, with certification dates and recount deadlines and the inevitable court challenges to follow at unspecified intervals.
Remember, Al Franken wasn’t sworn in until July.
They would like to get the count started “earlier rather than later” and could possibly begin counting as soon as next week — instead of the
initially reported date of Nov. 18.The count will take place in Juneau. They have 81,876 write-in ballots
that must be counted by hand so far and still have a few precincts that
have yet to report…Once the results are certified (this date is also pending) a candidate
has 5 days to request a recount. From that initial certification date, a
candidate also has a total of 10 days to contest the results.
The good news: Team Miller reminds us that something like five or six percent of write-in ballots are typically judged invalid. One big reason why that may loom large here is that it’s not enough to write in the candidate’s name; per state law, you have to fill in the oval or else the ballot’s no good, notwithstanding the voter’s clear intent. The bad news: Murkowski’s campaign to educate voters on write-in protocol is unprecedented and may cut the error rate way down. I’m also not sold on the theory that a meaningful number of those ballots could be for one of the other 160 candidates who ended up on the write-in list; who, exactly, is going into the booth and picking a name from the list at random? Even the people who signed up as candidates to mess with Murky likely aren’t voting for themselves but for Miller.
Here’s the real travesty, though:
Robert Campbell, Mr. Miller’s campaign manager, cautioned that Mrs. Murkowski can’t count on every write-in vote.
“I’m sure there’s probably going to be two or three dozen votes for Spiderman,” he said.
Lt. Gov. Craig Campbell said Wednesday write-in votes for Mr. Miller won’t count because Mr. Miller’s name isn’t on the official list of write-in candidates.
With all the talk of write-ins up there, there may well be a chunk of Miller voters who went into the booth thinking that writing someone in was the only option. I can’t wait to see how Alaska’s going to justify tossing out otherwise valid ballots bearing his name when the legal standard in the state is to follow the intent of the voter. Whether he’s on a preapproved list or not shouldn’t matter; in fact, I’ve had friends in New York write in “Allahpundit” as a gag and it ended up in the official returns. Intent is what counts, not some list. If the election ends up turning on that, it’ll be a Category Five political and legal hurricane. Which, from a conservative standpoint, would be awful, but from a blog content standpoint would be awesome.
Miller has already lawyered up to oversee the write-in counting process. It’s not crazy to think he’ll win a heavy majority of military absentees, but will that be enough? The lead is 13,000 votes (assuming all write-ins are valid and for Murkowski) and there are only a bit more than 30,000 absentee ballots outstanding. Judging by this video, you-know-who seems pretty confident.

Nah, I think Alaskans are like a lot of people elsewhere in the country. They talk a good conservative game but when it comes time to leave the government teat they say “no friggin’ way”.
ddrintn on November 3, 2010 at 6:26 PM
So, let’s start from the beginning. Miller is popular enough to win the primary, but not popular enough to win the general … and Murky, who lost the primary is? In a three way race?
Sounds really fishy.

When did Alaska become California and elect condescending elitist women to the Senate no matter how ugly they are as people.
alecj on November 3, 2010 at 6:29 PM
Combination of two things, I think.
1. Miller was terrible after winning the nomination, and his arrogance turned off a lot of people.
2. Some Dims voted for Murkowski just to piss off conservatives.

Per your Sept 3rd ConClub Post:
So – you never were a Miller man from the beginning – like Murky and complained he wasnt “conservative enough” – while specifically advocating Miller and the “race” be nice, genteel – because you are “Alaskans” and “Alaskans dont name call, dont…”
You are a Murkowski lover and Miller hater. Drugs and all… save the lower 49 BS. Its clear why you dont want ‘people to care, they cant do anything about it”
I also find it odd you keep making claims of how “Alaskans know each other, Miller wont dare go rogue” – and “lives” can be ruined… spoken like Murky follower – full of bravado, entitlement and psuedo intimidation.
You are a fraud.
Odie1941 on November 3, 2010 at 6:50 PM
I appreciate that. But I voted for Miller. I am just defending my state that no one has a clue about. That is all… and I get attacked or Alaskans are dumb or something to that degree.
Umm… this Dumb Alaskan and other dumb Alaskans have given something to you all. Have a shot at Palin… and then talk to me about how freaking dumb we are for electing her in which most of you feel in love with. But God help us.. Alaskans are DUMB! WOOO HOOO, I would rather be dumb as a rock with common sense then the smartest woman on the face of the earth… which would make me… Hillary? Ewwww!
I love double standards. They crack me up!
upinak on November 3, 2010 at 6:50 PM
Well, after last night, they clearly aren’t brain surgeons.
I’ll man up and say it….Alaskans were wrong to re-elect Mirkooski. Your state screwed up. They aren’t the only one, but it is what it is.
On the bright side, they at least get some credit for electing a republican, unlike Nevada and California.

Yet another argument for smaller government.

Its also why you needed to defend your original “article” as not “pro Murkowski”… 3 times. Thats out of the 4 bi-peds who actually read your crap.
So – did you “write in” Miller – or line ballot for him, because you seem to be real intimate with the only channel Murky had… write in. While you defend “tossing out Millers vote” – due to the “rules” which ar emurky at best. Every comment you make is in defense of Murkowski.
Seriously – you are a novice and a stooge, upinass…

upinak on November 3, 2010 at 7:05 PM
Methinks the Murk knew this
If there were to be a run-off, the Murk would pick up even more DEMs
Basically, the Murk used the write-in to get back on the ballot and take DEM votes
She lured DEM votes in with her promise to kill off one of the most educated articulate tea party candidates in this election. Vote for me and I will take out Miller
Get a run off, and the whole DEM bus could swim over to the Murk ship
This might not have happened if the RINOsauruses ruling the GOP did not try to assasinate Miller
Meanwhile the RINOsauruses’ proteges, Meg W, and Carly (the RINO Boxer) raked in the votes, as only moderates can when running in a blue state against real liberal opponents
entagor on November 3, 2010 at 7:05 PM
Hahaha, notice upinak is desperately trying to be “nice”, out of the blue – and is now advocating “lets chill and see how it all works out” – a 180 from “there is nothing anyone can do about it – you are all angry lower 49 fools”
Fraud exposed. Now go get your shoe shine box.

upinak on November 3, 2010 at 7:12 PM
With regards to the point on the write-in process. The Alaska ballot can be found here.
I’m under the impression that the ballots for Write-In had to be bubbled, that’s what her count currently is. If Miller starts questioning the bubbles, won’t she be able to go and challenge his bubbling? The bubbles are scanned and any for write-in, have already had the bubble accepted. The question now is if enough of the write-in names are valid.

Limerick on November 3, 2010 at 7:32 PM
i haven’t read all these posts, but the math doesn’t look viable.
Miller says six percent of ballots are pitched. that’s about 5K of the 81K…reducing the write in to 76K, still way above Miller’s 68K.
Certainly the write-ins must be counted properly, and the military needs to be in…so we must be patient.
Palin talked the other night about the AK vote getting procedure…sending planes out to the remote areas to collect ballots. AK is not RI…so it naturally takes a while.
but, we can all be happy that the Dem came in third. After the 2008 fiasco with the malfeasance of the DoJ that should cheer us up some.

In addition, I’m uncertain why some individuals here don’t know that you are not responsible for defending a wonderful state like Alaska by yourself. Maybe those upset can write a letter to the editor in a AK paper, rather than take it out on you.

What is pathetic is watching so many posters attack Upinak as well as Alaskan voters in general but almost none are criticizing Miller for running a losing campaign. What is the point of even posting at political blogs if the posters cannot take what the other posters say about themselves at face value?
I have rarely seen Upinak be insulting or rude to other posters. The criticism directed at upinak is undeserved and childish behavior of the first order on those doing the insulting.
Really very sad.
