Confirmed: Happy Meals now banned in San Francisco

posted at 6:59 pm on November 3, 2010 by Allahpundit

In case electing Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer in the middle of a fiscal crisis wasn’t enough to convince you that California’s on the brink of a new golden age, here’s the clincher.

Remember, so stupid is this idea that even Gavin Newsom opposed it. No problem, though: The city council passed it by a veto-proof margin, thus ensuring that not even one of America’s most famously liberal mayors would obstruct the war on fun.

The response came after the Californian city’s board of supervisors voted to forbid restaurants from giving gifts with meals that contain too much fat and sugar.

“We are extremely disappointed with this decision. It’s not what our customers want, nor is it something they asked for,” said McDonald’s spokeswoman Danya Proud…

Under the ban agreed in a preliminary vote Tuesday, restaurants in San Francisco would have to provide fruit and vegetables with meals accompanied by free toys, according to the San Francisco Chronicle…

Scott Rodrick, who owns 10 McDonald’s franchises in the city, was quoted by the paper as saying: “Somehow the San Francisco Board of Supervisors just took the happy out of Happy Meals.”

The reply from San Fran Supervisor Eric Mar, who sponsored the Mom’s Too Dumb To Decide What Her Kid Eats Act: “Our children are sick.” Semi-serious question for California conservatives (this means you, Patterico): Why are you still there? If it’s a money thing, where you simply can’t afford to leave right now, I understand. If it’s not a money thing, then why? The weather can’t be so great that it’s worth enduring another four years of single-party Democratic government driving the state deeper into a financial sinkhole at the behest of their union patrons. Then again, as a born and bred New Yorker, I’m … hopelessly compromised on this point, right down to the moronic local food bans. Exit question: Time for west and east coast conservatives to move inland, isn’t it?

An end run is required by McDonald’s….instead of including the toy with the Happy Meal, offer it as an add-on for an extra penny.

Can you hear ‘em knockin’
Knockin’ down your door.
1984 has past, forget about Big Brother,
Welcome to the 90′s where the government’s your
mother.

They’ll tell you – don’t do that.
They’ll try and tell you – it’s for your own good.
Big Mother is watching you
Mother’s protecting you
Mommy knows what’s right for you

They force their will on all the rest
They got the power, they know what’s best.
The high court is stacked to the right
Old man on the left won’t live through the night.

They’ll tell you – don’t do that
They’ll try and tell you – it’s for your own good
Big Mother is watching you
Mother’s protecting you
Mommy knows what’s right for you…
Goodbye Freedom, Hello Mom
The Bill of Rights just disappeared
There it is – whoops it’s gone!
Goodbye Freedom, Hello Mom
All your rights just disappeared
Everybody stay calm.

First amendment casualties, but they won’t be the
last,
Kiss the Bill of Rights goodbye it’s disappearing
fast.

(from the song “Goodbye Freedom, Hello Mom” by Scatterbrain)

Although this song was released in 1990 and was intended a protest song against conservatism, it’s message is more apt to the uber-liberal way of thinking.

It’s not Big Brother we have to worry about…it’s Big Mother.

It all begins at the ballot box, folks.

San Franciscans, like little children, need someone to tell them what to do.

It’s a nice place to visit, but who wants to live there?

Semi-serious question for California conservatives (this means you, Patterico): Why are you still there?

Isn’t Patterico a government lawyer looking at a sweet sweet fat pension when he retires at 50?

As for me, I have been licensed in CA. My private practice has been in CA for 20 years. I would have to reinvent myself in another state. Plus my wife is in real estate management and her properties are in CA. For me there is no where else to go. So, I moved to south OC and tried to make the best of it.

Did I misread? The toy is legal with meals containing fruit or vegies. Fries are a veggie. Ketchup is from tomato which is fruit.
Fruit loops live in San Francisco.

…restaurants in San Francisco would have to provide fruit and vegetables with meals accompanied by free toys….

OK, so each San Francisco Happy Meal comes with photos of two Board of Supervisors members, one labeled “Fruit” and the other, “Vegetable.” I’m sure whose picture goes where will suggest itself.

So, Calbear, you’re saying conservatives are all married, meat-eating, couch potatoes who are uneducated xenophobes? That’s not very open-minded of you.

No, I’m saying that liberal urban areas tend to have more world-class universities, ethnic stores, vegetarian-friendly restaurants, and things for single people to do. But mainly it’s the jobs; if Salt Lake City ever rivals Silicon Valley, then we’ll talk….

There are more dogs than kids in San Francisco.

They have been… FOR YEARS!! People have been retiring, selling their houses and MOVING OUT of California… Cashing OUT and taking their TAXABLE retirement pay with them…

Why do you think California is going to LOSE Congressional seats in the House? Why do you think other Western states (Texas) are gaining them? Why do you think revenues are down in California?

IT IS ALL INTER-RELATED…

You should hear 300+ kids singing This Land Is Your Land and Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the USA at the top of their little lungs.

You don’t have to be from Oklahoma to appreciate that.

Lily on November 3, 2010 at 7:21 PM

This Land is Your Land is written by the Communist Woody Guthrie. It’s not a patriotic song but dissing America and our belief of property rights.

mizflame98 on November 4, 2010 at 12:17 PM

So what does this certified lunatic Eric Mar plan to do next, introduce legislation that will require San Francisco police stand guard in the school cafeterias to make sure the kids each their vegetables?!!!

I mean, are the people of San Francisco that damned blinded by liberalism that they can’t see how incredibly stupid this over-the-top/nanny-nation mentality thing is?

Don’t they even care that this latest move by their own government makes their city an even bigger laughingstock than it already is right now?

pilamaye on November 4, 2010 at 12:51 PM

Wait! Isn’t the pursuit of life, liberty and Happy Meals in the Declaration of Independence?

Tennman on November 4, 2010 at 1:20 PM

What stupid trivial thing from San Francisco should Los Angeles ban?

novakyu on November 4, 2010 at 3:26 AM

San Francisco-ers?

We finally got our condo sold here. Now we’re working on getting the house ready to go up for sale. As soon as it’s sold, it’s East Texas for us!

franksalterego on November 4, 2010 at 7:53 AM

You hit the nail on the head, franksalterego!

I have personally heard many San Francisco voters explain, “I just look at the endorsements in the Bay Guardian and then vote they way they tell me to.”

The local Bay Guardian newspaper is known for being extremely liberal, but I have to admit their endorsements are comprehensive, well researched and include an explanation of WHY they think people should vote for a particular candidate or proposition.

Thinking adults will read the Bay Guardian’s endorsements to get the background information and then most often come to a different conclusion about which candidate or proposition deserves their vote.

The children who vote in San Francisco will just skip to the bottom line recommendation and do what they are told to do.

Unfortunately, the local Republican party doesn’t do much to counter the influence of the Bay Guardian. You can see how little information San Francisco Republican Party endorsements provide here:

http://www.sfgop.org/

If you have a similar problem in your area, you can work around the problem by creating your own list of endorsements to hand out to your friends. Be sure to include the reasons you made the decisions you did on your endorsement sheet, to help people learn to make better decisions themselves.

pilamaye on November 4, 2010 at 12:51 PM

Nope. The laughing needs to get much louder before liberal San Franciscans will even hear it.

Do what you can to help the San Franciscans you know to see how insane decisions like this are. It is a compassionate thing to do and the first step toward helping them to recover from chronic liberalism.

No more happy meals but weed is ok in the Bay Area?

Home of Berzerkley and Stanford, two places of “higher’ learning.

Happy Meal (no toy): $3.94

Happy Meal (with toy): $3.95

PROBLEM SOLVED!!

No personal income tax in Texas… WELL DONE!!

Hey Allah!

Time for west and east coast conservatives to move inland, isn’t it?

Son, I saw the need to move FAR away from ChiTcago over 20 years ago, so I did it. I moved to lower Michigan where I joined the then meagar grass roots efforts to keep the GOP mostly conservative.

Take a close look at Michigan today and tell me what you think now. ;o)

I still say that McDonalds could win this fight by agreeing to restrict the Happy Meal “toys” in San Francisco to:

1. Obama action figures
2. Jerry Brown action figures
3. Condoms
