Miller campaign claims KTVA reporters caught on tape discussing smear; Update: Palin calls Alaska media “corrupt bastards”

posted at 10:00 am on October 31, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

According to Joe Miller’s campaign, a voice mail left by reporters from KTVA, the CBS affiliate in Anchorage, went longer than intended and ended up capturing some embarrassing conversation. Much like Jerry Brown’s voicemail to a police union chief, the recording apparently resulted from a failure to properly disconnect the call, and two people can be heard to strategize coverage of an upcoming Joe Miller rally to look for a child molester they could feature later. Big Journalism also has the transcript (via Left Coast Rebel):

FEMALE REPORTER: That’s up to you because you’re the expert, but that’s what I would
do…I’d wait until you see who showed up because that indicates we already know
something…
[Laughter]
[INAUDIBLE]
FEMALE REPORTER: Child molesters…
MALE REPORTER: Oh yeah… can you repeat Joe Miller’s…uh… list of people, campaign
workers, which one’s the molester?
[INAUDIBLE]
FEMALE VOICE: We know that out of all the people that will show up tonight, at least one of
them will be a registered sex offender.
[Laughter]
MALE REPORTER: You have to find that one person…
[INAUDIBLE]
FEMALE REPORTER: And the one thing we can do is ….we won’t know….we won’t know but
if there is any sort of chaos whatsoever we can put out a twitter/facebook alert: saying what
the… ‘Hey Joe Miller punched at rally.’
FEMALE REPORTER: Kinda like Rand Paul…I like that.
[Laughter]
FEMALE REPORTER: That’s a good one.

Miller’s campaign released this statement, along with the audio:

Anchorage, Alaska. October 30, 2010 — In an apparent accidental voice mail message left on the cell phone of Joe Miller’s spokesperson, Randy DeSoto, what is believed to be the news director for CBS Anchorage affiliate KTVA, along with assignment editor Nick McDermott, and other reporters, openly discuss creating, if not fabricating, two stories about Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, Joe Miller. The voice mail message was later authenticated by Mr. McDermott, who sent a text to DeSoto stating “Damn iPhone . . . I left you a long message. I thought I hung up. Sorry.”

In the first discussion, the KTVA reporters discuss getting a list of Miller campaign supporters in order to ‘find’ a “child molester.” “You have to find that one person,” says the male reporter, to laughter in the news room. The reporters at KTVA then discuss creating a “Rand Paul” incident at the then upcoming Miller Rally (held on October 28, 2010) and hoping for violence so that they can “send out a tweet” and “Facebook” that “Miller got punched” at the rally.

Needless to say, if this allegation is true, then … we have an epidemic of incompetency when it comes to handling phones. KTVA also has a big scandal on its hands if this is substantiated. I have sent a request to Nick McDermott and news director Staci Feger asking for confirmation and comment, and I will update this post if and when I receive a reply.

Update: Let me make a couple of points about concerns raised in the comments.  First, the part about phone-handling incompetency is a joke.  Second and more importantly, we don’t yet know whether the voices on that call came from KTVA reporters or not; there is nothing in the audio to identify anyone.  (In contrast, the Brown audio had Brown’s very distinctive voice at the beginning.)  The Miller campaign has made an allegation, backed by an e-mail that has yet to be released, and until we get independent verification, that’s all it is at the moment.  Someone left the message, of course, but until we get a response from KTVA, it’s best not to leap to conclusions.  If it did capture reporters having that kind of discussion, then as I wrote originally, KTVA does have a big scandal on their hands.

Update II: Sarah Palin tweeted that the Alaska media are “corrupt bastards.”  Well, she would know after the way they treated her during and after her VP run.  The Daily Caller has more on the story. The Right Scoop has the video of Palin repeating it on Fox News:

Update III: Why didn’t I “demand” a response from KTVA and vent my outrage?  Because it doesn’t cost anything to be professional and polite, and it makes it more likely to get a response, that’s why.  If they don’t respond to me or anyone else, that will tell us something about the allegations, too.

Wait until 2012. What we are seeing now (and saw in 2008) is nothing compared to what we’re going to experience during the next presidential and congressional elections. We’re going to see the Chicago Way writ large: SEIU and AFSCME thugs practicing large-scale voter and protester intimidation, rampant voting machine tampering and election board miscounting and deception, character assassination and smear campaigns, and literally billions of dollars contributed by shady, unknown and unknowable sources pouring into Democratic Party campaign coffers, all of it un- and under-reported by a mainstream media which has become nothing more than an Orwellian ministry of Truth, making unpersons out of GOP candidates and churning out agitprop for the machine.

Make no mistake: P.J. O’Rourke was right, although he blunted the truth with humor. They hate our guts. To them–the union bosses, the owners of the MSM, the hardcore cadre of socialist true believers now holding the reins of federal power–we are not political opponents in a representative democracy. To them, we are the enemy, and they view us as greater threat than a nuclear Iran or a network of Islamic Jihadists in Detroit with an SUV packed with high explosives.

In the face of hostile authority, one can look to either George Washington or Mahatma Gandhi, and–speaking only for myself–I’m not exactly a Mahatma Gandhi kind of guy.

Screw that. Ed is the one that decided to make a freaking joke over the issue. He attempted to down play the issue. this is an issue irregardless of personal likes/dislikes that demands seriousness and yes anger.

I don’t like mitt much nor newt but if a story like this came out about the media trying to paint mitt and or newt as a supporter of child molesters I would be on the warpath.

this is not a joking matter and Ed should not have made it one.

Go to the CBS KTVA website and look at the poll on the lower left. The plurality of respondents say McAdams is going to win. heh. Also, no sign of a response to this accusation.

Assignment Manager’s Nick McDermott’s email is nmcdermott@ktva.com. He’s the one who is most firmly connected to this monkey business — he contacted the Miller campaign and apologized for leaving an overly-long voice mail!

Hmm…the reporter in question whose iPhone was left on made an interesting statement after the fact:
Randy DeSoto, the spokesman whose phone the voicemail was left on, said in a statement that, “Frankly, when I first heard this I was shocked. Though a bit garbled at times, there are disturbing comments in this conservation that never should have occurred.”

ABC’s Jonathan Karl is reporting that a “high-level GOP source” told him that the Republican party had “essentially given up” on Republican senate candidate Joe Miller and consider Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who has said she will caucus with the GOP if elected, as the party’s best chance of keeping the seat. From Karl’s report:

With Miller’s campaign faltering, the source tells me that Republican leaders are now worried that Democrat Scott McAdams has a shot of winning and that Murkowski may be the only way to stop him. …

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has been forced to spend precious resources in Alaska. But take a look at the latest ad running in Alaska: It spends 25 seconds attacking Democrat McAdams and less than five seconds mentioning Joe Miller.

If the NRSC really wanted to help Miller, it would be attacking Murkowski. Indeed, an anti-McAdams ad may be the last thing Miller needs right now. At this point, what he really needs is for McAdams to siphon anti-Miller votes away from Murkowski.

I consider the explanation important because it dismantles Democratic insistence that the only way to prosperity is to tax “rich” people. Conservatives need to be able to shove this back in the face of liberal even if it’s a counterintuitive explanation.

She still needs work. The media doesn’t hold Obama to the same standard, but the facts and history are on her side. She needs to do a better job in this regard.

I again re-emphasize my point that she went on FNS to rally the troops and imho she did that in spades and really took it to the Democrats. And then she took it to the GOP establishment as well by advocating no compromise on principle.

Sure not everyone understands the Laffer curve but hey Palin did defend extending the Bush tax cuts and did say we don’t have a tax problem but a spending problem.

And she put the ruling class on notice that the “freshman class” as she calls it will not put up with crap.

It’s called building a narrative. the GOP establishment is hell bent on stopping palin therefore they will use a potential loss by COd and Miller to advance the meme that Palin’s politics can not win nationally. Wallace was pushing this narrative today, Rove pushed it this week, the AK democratic senator pushed it yesterday.

this is the gameplan of the RINO establishment. this has been their gameplan she Palin’s endorsements rocketed Miller and COD to primary wins. This is why rove and CK did what they did using the same talking points, this is why the RINO GOP senate allowed Lisa to remain in her position, this is why there was no effort to stop Lisa form a write in cmapaign, this is why the NRSC di nothing to help Miller and COD. this is why the media has highlighted these two races out of 30 going on across the nation. this is why IMO the AK supreme court did what they did. the goal from day one has been to get
Palin not to run in the primary. they know if she runs she stands a very good chance of winning thereofr ethe best shot they have to stiop her is before the primary. This is their last shot at it. And it has been joined by the dem establishment who do not want to see Palion running either.

It would be ironic. Unfortunately I think both will lose. In Miller’s case, when the rules for write-in ballots changed, and a judge ruled that Miller’s private files personnel files had to be opened, it was pretty much over. In COD’s case, all those appearances on Bill Maher were doomed to haunt her, and that ‘I am not a witch ad’ was the worst possible response. And her technically correct but politically suicidal argument over separation of church and state…And that stupid discrimination lawsuit she brought.

Although Fiorina probably does have a better shot than Whitman.

powerpro on October 31, 2010 at 12:22 PM

To me there is no difference.. The people spoke by way of their vote, and the GOP establishment decided to tell the people that they aren’t smart enough to be trusted, therefore deciding to back their own personal choice rather than the choice of the people. Huge mistake…

Keemo on October 31, 2010 at 12:03 PM

Miller did receive the support of the “GOP establishment”:

Anchorage, Alaska. September 09, 2010 — Republican US Senate Nominee Joe Miller picked up the endorsements of three more United States Senators today. Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 2008 Presidential Candidate John McCain, and NRSC Chairman John Cornyn.

I don’t want Miller getting on the phone and demanding anything from the GOP, the NRSC, Cornyn, or the pink Elephant in the middle of the room. When he beats Merkabvsky, he’ll have done it with Palin-power, and he won’t owe the GOP a damn thing. Let Palin call in his chips.

SilentWatcher on October 31, 2010 at 12:27 PM

The NRSC responds to ABC and Politico (neither of whom have any credibility):

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is pushing back against reports today that they’ve pulled away from Joe Miller in Alaska. AN NRSC e-mail just went out with the following statement from Rob Jesmer, the NRSC’s executive director: “While I’m sure ABC News enjoyed leading Politico’s Playbook this morning, it might have been more useful if they had actually taken a moment to contact the NRSC before running this inaccurate story. Joe Miller not only has the full support of the NRSC, but he’s actually featured prominently in our TV ad which is running still today statewide in Alaska.”

NRSC communications director Brian Walsh also points to their boss, Senator John Cornyn, on This Week this morning:
· AMANPOUR: “Let me ask you about Joe Miller in Alaska – our Jon Karl, political correspondent, is saying the GOP is basically giving up on Joe Miller or thinking he’s not going to win.”
SEN. CORNYN: “That’s not the case – what we have done, we are supporting the nominee of our party which is Mr. Miller.”

I suspect if he sounded a little more like Sarah Palin on Fox, he could have put this storyline to bed.

I think a lot of people are going to be surprised on tues. I think the polls are wrong. Very wrong.

the media and establishment has once again fallen for groupthink. the polls say so so it is so. they do this while forgetting that the polls say what the pollster wants them to say. groupthink is a bad thing in politics.

Meg and Carly will both win infact the GOP might run the table on all the close races IMO if the polls are really wrong. and some races that are not even on the radar will be closer than anyone thought.

The GOP establishment is trying their collective best to say the right things while pushing forward with their agenda. Limbaugh has been busting their balls on this. Listen to what they say, but also watch closely to see if their actions back up their words.

Now that video has surfaced that casts a different light on the Rand Paul incident , we get a ” MOONBEAM MOMENT ” from Alaska.
First let’s look back at events and view them in their totality .
Once upon a time every where Obama spoke some one fainted , then he became President.
Obama went back on the circuit to stump for Democratic candidates in the midterms .
People again fainted ( on cue ) and it was convienantly caught by the news media,
Bill Clinton went out stumping and they fainted for him also .
In all cases not only were Obama and Bill calm and cool under fire, they also had quick one liners to add.
Next the cell phone wasnt hung up by the Jerry Brown crew and we had the Meg Whitman moment .
Enter Josh Moon the man who received a bag of rocks , a shocking and fabulous story that died a quick death when people simply said ” show us the proof ”
Next comes the incident at the Rand Paul rally .
Bill Clinton re emrges and tries not once but twice to get the minority candidate in Florida to drop out of the race .
This is the SECOND time that Clinton has ADMITTED to doing something like this .
Has he performed this act ONLY twice and got caught both times , or…….
Today there seems to be credible evidence that a local CBS affiliate in Alaska conspired to create an event to discredit Joe Miller .
So what does this all mean ?
Liberal spin doctors will say this going on , in both sides of the aisle .
Perhaps they are right .
Perhaps the Liberals are doing a tremendous more amount of it and just getting more often .
Then again , maybe the Liberals are just plain stupid and get caught more often .
I look forward to the defense of this audio track by the Liberals ( unless of course they are in hiding from the new Rand Paul video )
Naturally we shouldnt rush to conclusions , but then again the Audio is there and has been authenticated by McDermott, who sent a text to Randy DeSoto ( Miller’s campaign manager ) stating, “Damn iPhone… I left you a long message. I thought I hung up. Sorry.”
Have you received an email with “tips ” on how you can help discredit a conservative candidate ?

Polling is based on staying within the thick bell portion of the bell curve. They are wholly inadequate for predicting outliers. I’m with you, I think this will truly be an outlier. Possibly 3 – 4 standard deviations from the mean. If so we will see well over a 100+ seats in the house change to the GOP

Update III: Why didn’t I “demand” a response from KTVA and vent my outrage? Because it doesn’t cost anything to be professional and polite

this is one thing I’ve learned from Ed and AP. He’s right, politeness is free, but hyperbole and outrage is costly for them. Hyperbole is our job in the comments. Ed remains reasonable and is never shown to be a fool when doing so. It costs us nothing to be hyperbolic except then people won’t listen to us. It’d cost ed quite a bit.,

California public opinion polls can no longer be accurate because the lefties there have demonstrated that they will search out conservatives and intimidate and harrass them. When someone calls you and asks how you will vote, is it the SEIU or is it Rasmussen? You don’t know.

a very good scientific way of putting it. I think they are using the wrong turnout model or as the old sayign goes garbage in = garbage out.

the fact that this is an off-presidental year election also means that mistakes in turnout models gets amplified. a 2-4pt change in the turnout model can/will give a 4-12pt swing in the election result. It explains why the polls for the VA, MA, NJ were so wrong(less dems and more GOP leaning voters showed up). It also explains why the primary polls were incorrect (More conservatives showed up then thought).

It just seems odd to me that so many self-professed conservatives are putting so much faith in polls this year. O’Donnell is getting stomped because the polls say so. Miller is being crushed because the polls say so. And not just any polls. It’s polls from the large and established polling firms that point to major blowouts in DE and elsewhere. We might as well just stay home, huh? Between the lousy polls and the media conspiracy, we don’t stand a chance!
