Dem Rep: ObamaCare “not a government takeover … will reduce the federal deficit”

posted at 5:50 pm on October 31, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Yes, it’s Betty McCollum again, providing yet another collective-groan moment from her debate ten days ago. This time, it’s not quite as absurd as claiming that “al-Qaeda no longer poses a threat to the United States,” but McCollum proves herself just as out of touch on domestic policy as on national security. She insists on defending ObamaCare in the debate with Teresa Collett, the Republican challenger in MN-04, making her one of the few Democrats to do so in competitive districts this year.  Collett’s campaign put together this video demonstrating why the argument is not just a loser but flat-out wrong:

We’ve already seen a big Minnesota employer (3M) dump retirees out of its drug coverage, thanks to the cost increases under ObamaCare.  Other insurers also stopped issuing child-only policies, thanks to the uncertainty over costs for the new must-issue mandate.  And at least some employers are considering the cost savings of ending all employee coverage, which even the Democratic governor of Tennessee, Phil Bredesen, acknowledged as a likely outcome for ObamaCare.

As for the idea that ObamaCare will lower the deficit, Collett attacks that expertly with the follow-up “doc fix” that essentially rendered all Democratic arguments on red ink moot.  But the real way to reduce the deficit is to cut the spending that Democrats increased by more than a third in three budget cycles, and to pass any kind of budget — two tasks at which McCollum and the Democrats have utterly failed, and will continue to fail if left in power.  Hopefully, MN-04 will elect someone with common sense, or any kind of sense, on Tuesday.

Stupidity knows no bounds. Our newspaper here in Roanoke, VA had a columnist that wrote how great and effective the stimulus was and how we need another one to keep this economy going!

tims472 on October 31, 2010 at 6:06 PM

The contrast couldn’t be sharper. McCollum was speaking in an angry “pissed off at the world” petulant childish tone while Collett was speaking in a calm, reasoned adult manner.

That contrast in itself would lend me to want to vote for Collett over McCollum if I lived there.

As far as a takeover of the medical industry, it’s a done deal. Make no mistake. Major corporations are now laying off and there are a few mergers going on. The mergers are happening in anticipation of the ultimate takeover.

United and BC/BS are fighting over who will manage the program.

GE is a lock on compiling and documenting every physican’s visit, every transaction for prescription or OTC drugs and they will oversee the liquidation of HSA’s. GE will absorb the unused funds of unspent HSA dollars to help fund the electronic transfer of your health and wellness information.

GE will be the beneficiary of the OHCP (Obama Health Care Plan) which will be fully implemented in 2013 in anticipation of January 2014.

The Groupthink or lack of critical thinking on the Left has them unconditioned to reassess their positions even when proven fallacious.

They truly are the people of the lie, and on 11/2 they will morph into the people of the fraudulent vote.

Hopefully young independents just coming of age politically will keep snapshots in their collective memories of the mendacity and dissembling of the Left and steer clear for generations, as well as watching carefully for their next evil incarnation, for it is inevitable.

Trust me when I tell you this because this is the business I am in.

The HSA’s are gone in 2010. If you have an HSA you have exactly 39 days to cash it in. Buy anything over the counter that you can.

All or most HSA’s get to keep the $ that is in them that is not used by certain dates.

GE will begin collecting medical records without our/your consent; it is by mandate. Therefore, all medical provders (pharmacy, walk in, specialist, hospital, ambulance, EMT, Fire dept’s, police, must surrender records. GE will scan them and have instant access to your personal information, including your age and your ailments.

That is the extent of the implmentation of the OHCP in 2011.

At or near the end of 2012, they begin to compile and reconcile data.

That’s pretty awful. Not sure that any politician can fix this economy though. Once the economy nearly collapsed, our best hope is to avoid the fate of Japan that went through a similar, severe recession when its housing bubble collapsed.

There’s no easy way out of this mess.

Key West Reader on October 31, 2010 at 7:04 PM

But the real way to reduce the deficit is to cut the spending that Democrats increased by more than a third in three budget cycle

So the answer is to balance the budget- that will reduce unemployment and eventually end the recession? To quote Cheney, sounds like Herbert Hoover time.

bayam on October 31, 2010 at 7:03 PM

With all due respect, yes there is.

First and foremost, businesses are paralyzed with fear. We don’t know what’s up what’s down, what’s coming at us. Hence, we wait.

The elections will be but a minor signal. What started as a systematic recession (look it up, we have them every 4 to 6 years) turned into a panic under the community organizer that shalt change the world.

He changed America. That said, we will wait him out. He’ll not last much longer. Speculation is that with the 80 planes and helio vehicles he’ll be going into exile in India with a sudden case of the vapors.

America waits.

“no politician can fix this mess”

But they can certainly make health care more efficient and affordable for everyone, right? Because gov’t is good at making things cheap and increasing quality. That’s why there is not a single gov’t program that achieves this result. But yet, the left always thinks “this time, it will work.”

That A politician can’t “fix” the economy is correct. But, a politician can stop doing things to harm the economy. Adding regulation, increasing costs, attempt to pass idiotic economy killing measures like cap-and-trade. Spend so much that our debt kills us. Be in favor of silly business harming laws like taking away the freedom of a private vote in union organizing.

There are a million things Obama could have done to help. He did the opposite in every case.

The sickest part of this charade of being a thinking lifeform by McCollum is that she is just the typical liberal who really believes as she does. When the foundations of your thought patterns are based on delusional perceptions, then you have to be a progressive democrat.
