“High-level” political officials interfered in NBPP case, forced withdrawal
posted at 10:32 am on October 29, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The US Civil Rights Commission has concluded in an extensive report that the strange decision to dismiss a case the Department of Justice had won by default against a New Black Panther Party activist for voter intimidation came after the involvement of political appointees. Furthermore, and most embarrassing, the 131-page report accuses the Department of Justice of attempting to cover up that involvement, and that the cover-up came from “high-level” officials in the DoJ. The USCRC concludes that the Civil Rights Division is “at war with its core mission”:
The Justice Department has tried to hide the involvement of high-level political officials in the dismissal of a controversial voter-intimidation lawsuit against members of the New Black Panther Party, a federal commission concluded in a draft report.
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights said the department’s reversal in the case, which drew criticism from conservatives, indicates that its Civil Rights Division is failing to protect white voters and is “at war with its core mission of guaranteeing equal protection of the laws for all Americans.” …
The commission’s draft report said the department’s “repeated attempts to obscure” the involvement of political appointees in the dismissal “raise questions about what the Department is trying to hide. ”
The report accuses the Justice Department of stonewalling the commission’s investigation and of failing to turn over key documents and make witnesses available. Schmaler disputed that, saying the department provided more than 4,000 pages of documents.
The news comes at a particularly and obviously bad time for the White House. One of the more secondary messages this election cycle from Democrats was a claim that a new Republican majority in the House would do nothing but conduct vendettas against the Obama administration. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) would become the chair of the Oversight Committee and already has this case on his radar. This report strongly suggests that Congress needs to start demanding accountability from the executive branch, and that Democrats have utterly failed in their constitutional duty to provide it.
It also poses a conundrum for all of those who screamed about the politicization of the Department of Justice during the Bush administration. The claims centered on the requests for resignations of political appointees in order to emphasize a focus on vote fraud, which critics charged was an abuse of power — even though political appointees serve at the pleasure of the President at all times, with the exception of the judiciary. Now we have solid evidence of not just politicization of prosecution decisions, but a political cover-up as well. Will we get the same level of demands for inquiries now?
And I’m not just talking about elected officials, either. Will the media give this the kind of coverage that a political cover-up deserves?

No, and no. Offhand, I think it will not gain any more traction than it has before now – that is to say, almost none.
There is a certain quantity of fear associated with making charges of racism from the Right. It is not entirely justified, but it exists. I do not think it will be pursued that hard, and, further, I doubt that it will garner much attention among the populace.
(Now, watch as it explodes into the national spotlight, just to show me up as an idjit.)

The corruption at the highest levels will continue as long as total disregard for the law is the standard operating procedure of our Justice Department. When Slick Willie’s pardon pimp was appointed as Attorney General, it was obvious that law enforcement was not an administration priority.

We need to focus on the source of the orders. I’m betting the word came from the Oval Office. No underling would dare set this kind of scheme in motion without the top man’s approval and connivance.
Once again, we have an impeachment-worthy crime to deal with. Unfortunately, the Republicans will claim this is not a “hill to die on.” The “pundits” will asset that calling for Osama Obama’s removal from office strikes them as “bad optics” or some other squishy nonsense.
I find the cowardice of the right almost as appalling as the shameful and illegal behavior of the lefties.

The only person I can watch on Fox and enjoy anymore is Beck. I used to like O’Reilly but now I am disgusted by what I perceive to be his squishiness. Was he always like this? I am willing to consider the fact that it is I who have changed.

The_nile is right; our mainstream media is the cover-up. They have repeatedly covered for Obama and painted a completely inaccurate picture of him from the start in order to advance their leftist agenda. Replacing them with a pro-America media should be up there toward the top of freedom-loving Americans’ agenda after the mid-term elections.
But the conservative and new media can give this story the coverage it deserves. This will put pressure on the old media, which is losing its audience, and on those Democrats who want to keep their party from going down with Obama, who is such a traitor to truth, justice, and the American way that he will eventually self-destruct.

In any sane country that holds the liberty of its people and the accountability of its government as among its highest principles, this should be a no-brainer – Eric Holder’s political head… meet silver platter.
But since we are in an era where the administration, its entire party, and its mouthpiece media work in concert to undermine the people’s liberty and their own accountability, it remains to be seen whether this will result in anything at all.

What’s funny is:
1. You find a way to take credible charges that a legitimate case of racially-motivated voter intimidation was overlooked by the justice department for political reasons and put some crazy reverse spin on it, claiming that it’s actually proof that Bush politicized the DOJ.
2. You found one source (Politico) with one source (Thernstrom) to make this claim.
3. In the article you cite, the claim is roundly refuted by others on the the commision, and by other sources.
In short, what’s funny is, you make a ridiculous, unsubstantiated claim, then offer umbrage when it’s mocked.

How is the notion that laws should be selectively applied even conceivable in a country that was founded on the principle that “all men [and women] are created equal”?

Bulldung.
This is not a “political” issue. It is a violation-of-law issue. If anyone looks at it rationally, it should be clear that no underling like Holder would dare take this kind of action without clearing it with Osama Obama. Assuming, that is, that the Traitor-in-Chief didn’t initiate it.
Don’t look at this as if it’s part of the Wonderful Game of Politics. Ed likes to do that, too, but it goes far beyond “optics” or “nuance” or any of that crap.
A bunch of hack politicos posturing about it won’t help, either. Find some people at the FBI who take their oaths of office seriously, who put the law and justice ahead of politics, and set them loose to investigate. Then arrest the lawbreakers. I’m pretty certain the name “Obama” would appear on the list of indictments.

I will remain optimistic about the bones of our country. Here’s what bothers me.
The incident was obvious. It was unequivacally wrong.
And yet, we had to produce a long report with hours of discussion?
That’s not an efficient method. It speaks to why people are intuitively understanding that our flexibility, which is good, I think, has reached a tipping point in real life.

1. the civil rights commission is obviously politicized, and their report is based mainly on the testimony of
2. there are several sources outside the conservative cocoon that confirm this. what’s wrong with thernstrom? is she lying for what benefit? as for the current conservative majority on the commission, it was the bush administration that violated the commission’s charter when it appointed two conservative “independents” in 2007 who had recently been registered Republicans.
here’s more on the politicization of the DOJ if you’re really new to this, and see the earlier boston globe link about the CRC.
it’s funny that i’m the one who substantiates anything with links and you’re the ignorant fool who moves the goalposts whining that ‘one source is not enough.’ i love how nuts like you think they win arguments by declaring yourselves the winners no matter what the facts are.

I have felt for 20 years that the minority groups were pushing an agenda that actually was supporting racist thinking.
I never thought they should have their feet held to the fire about that. It’s understandable. I grew up in the South. You really did need to see a big push-back to overcome Jim Crow. I can tell you real stories, and it wasn’t a small problem.
But there always comes a point when the crutch actually leads to ongoing disability.
I personally thought the best part about Obama being elected is that we would reach that point.
I still think that’s significant, important, and will be best supported by a lot of tolerance as people are allowed to shift into new viewpoints.
AnninCA on October 29, 2010 at 12:18 PM
