Giannoulias admits to dirty trick with third-party campaign in IL
posted at 11:40 am on October 28, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Not only did Alexi Giannoulias admit to sending mailers to voters touting the Libertarian candidate in the Senate race in Illinois, he implicated the state Democratic Party in the attempt to siphon voters away from Republican Mark Kirk. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Giannoulias, who got pounded in the debate yesterday over millions of dollars in loans to mobsters while he served as loan officer for his family’s Broadway Bank, confessed to the dirty trick afterward. Giannoulias claims that sending ads touting another candidate without revealing the campaign as a source isn’t deceptive:
After the debate, Giannoulias admitted his campaign, in coordination with the Democratic Party, funded a mailer to Downstate conservatives touting Libertarian Senate candidate Mike Labno as the “pro-life, pro-gun” alternative to Kirk, who supports abortion rights like Giannoulias and who at least previously favored restrictions on handguns.
The Democrats hoped to divert votes from Kirk to Labno. Is that deceptive?
“No,” Giannoulias said.
“It’s a sign of increasing desperation of a campaign when the Democratic Party of Illinois starts sending out flyers on behalf of an entirely different party,” Kirk said.
The Capitol Fax Blog has scans of the mailer available for those who want to see it. TPM notes that the back of the mailer includes this disclosure, “Paid for by Illinois Victory, a Project of the Lake County Democratic Party.” That brings up another serious point. If Giannoulias’ campaign coordinated efforts with Illinois Victory, wouldn’t campaign regulations required that disclosure on the mailer, too?
As far as it being “deceptive,” that’s certainly in the eye of the beholder. However, when one campaign and political party starts funneling resources into pushing a competing candidate without disclosing their involvement in that “project,” it certainly seems deceptive. And why is Giannoulias and the Democrats pushing a pro-life agenda, if not to deceive voters? Democrats reject the pro-life agenda, and in Illinois the party hasn’t exactly been friendly to the pro-gun agenda either. That kind of advertising is extremely deceptive, as well as massively hypocritical.
It also fits a pattern of dodgy “Tea Party”-listed candidates around the country. John Adler’s campaign in New Jersey got exposed for doing the same thing in an attempt to fool voters into splitting their vote, and many suspect that the Scott Ashjian campaign in Nevada of similar ties and motivations. All of this leads to a fundamental conclusion: Democrats feel that they have to offer misdirection and dishonesty in order to hold onto power in Washington, and can’t win on their record and agenda in 2010. They’re as intellectually and politically bankrupt as Broadway Bank was financially bankrupt, and Alexi Giannoulias is the poster boy for both.
Update: I changed the headline from “third-party candidate” to “third-party campaign” because it seemed to me that it implied that Labno was part of the effort. I’m not saying his campaign had anything to do with it either, but the amended headline makes it less about Labno, as it should be.

To those considering voting for Giannoulias; you better hope you agree with 100% of his opinions, forever. Or these are the techniques he will use against you.

I got one of those mailers. It was kind of funny but sad.
It’s also sad that Giannoulias is the best Dem candidate that my state can come up with. Sad that Giannoulias is the “protege” of the President of the United States.
Kirk has big-time faults, but he is rock solid on some important issues and way, way, way better than his opponent.

You got it. Democrats are so bankrupt on the issues, they resort to vote fraud and dirty tricks.

And to that I say: Bring It ON.

Poor Lexie. He’s going to be out of a job soon, and I don’t think that Mommy and Daddy are going to be able to bail him out. Broadway Mob Bank is going out of business.

Haven’t seen one “Giannoulis” yard sign yet.
This should be Alexi’s (and most democrats) theme song on November 2:

ChrisB on October 28, 2010 at 11:51 AM
it is happening in VA-5 as well, Ed. FYI
This weekend, the Democratic Party of Virginia sent a mailer to homes throughout the district extolling Clark’s support for the Fair Tax, social conservatism and desire to abolish the IRS. It concluded with the statement: “Maybe [Robert Hurt] is afraid to face our families because he’s not the conservative he says he is.” Apparently, though, no one warned the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee that Clark is the DPVA’s hero du jour; the DCCC sent a mailer–the same day–warning voters that Jeff Clark is “too conservative for Virginia.”

Well, count me as one who the DMV screwed in the absentee mailer fiasco cause I won’t be able to vote Kirk. Pissed off too.

More evidence that the DCCC is supporting a non-Dem candidate named Jeff Clark in VA-5 against Tom Perriello, D-VA. State SEnator Robert Hurt is running against Perriello and has him on the ropes. Tom Perriello is the, “you better tie our hands to keep us from stealing” fella.

BTW, Mr. Obama is going to Charlottesville, VA to campaign for Tom Perriello tomorrow evening.

No worries, he admitted to at least receiving $1M after taxes from Broadway Bank Dividends as the family cashed out before the collapse.

I’m in a fairly liberal area and haven’t seen a Gianoulias yard sign either. Mostly down the ballot signs. I really don’t think this will be close on election day.

Apparently the use of false-flag tea party candidates is common as dirt here in Florida, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find it a common practice across the country.
The debased and horrid Alan Grayson did it, and apparently was responsible for similar operations within Florida.

If I was Kirk, I’d be all over this. What more could you want, than your opponent saying, “hey, I’m not the one, vote for my opposition.”
MNHawk on October 28, 2010 at 12:35 PM
With all due respect if you were Kirk, you’d be a liberal and a pansy, with no clue of how to run an intelligent campaign in this political environment.
Kirk sucks, and my vote for him came with a profound cry of protest. I am campaigning this very moment for a primary candidate to replace him in six years.

You should check out some of the mob banker’s ads on YouTube like this one, but be careful not to be drinking liquids while doing so because your nose won’t like it.
It’s unbelievable to me, the depths of deceipt that the Democrats are willing to sink to, trying to elect such an ignominious candidate.
Edouard on October 28, 2010 at 12:47 PM
There’s plenty of republicans here in IL that would rather see Ginny get elected than vote for Mark Kirk- only because Kirk fails their purity tests. Not right wingy enough, not nutty enough to suit them. But hey the Lt. Gov candidate is; the guy who believes the earth was created in six days and is 10,000 years old, and thinks that should be taught in schools.
When Kirk wins the senate and Brady loses the governors race maybe they will get the hint: stick to finance and budget, not to social finger wagging.
Dennis Miller nailed it: vote out all the incumbents, then over the next few years figure out who the morons are and get rid of them.

Illinidiva on October 28, 2010 at 12:49 PM
I don’t really see this as cheating/fraud. I just wish Republicans would learn to do the same. Send out mailers on the Green party to people in Chicago. It’s so frustrating to see the GOP sit by election after election and play by the rules while the other side cheats on every play.

It’s everywhere: Here in CT-1, where John Larson (D) has been Congressman almost forever, he’s running ads saying that “Congressional Republicans” want to privatize Medicare. Not ONE Republican candidate has EVER proposed this–in fact, Republican candidates want to RESTORE the funds the Democrats cut from Medicare to “pay for” ObamaCare.
But this is all the Democrats have: scary lies about “evil” things Republicans might do if elected, even though nobody ever tried them. By next Monday, Dem ads will tell voters that Republicans want coat-hanger abortions, hate people with Parkinson’s disease, and dump arsenic in black people’s drinking water. The Dems have done this before!!!

Consider this:
A mob lender and pal candidate from Illinois owns up to a dirty trick by admitting to trying to siphon votes away from his opponent by supporting a 3rd party candidate.
Meanwhile, a pretend boy scout Congressman from New Jersey like John Adler, NJ 3rd CD, continues to insist that neither he nor his campaign had anything to do with the same exact tactic, INCLUDING THE FACT THAT A FEW OF HIS CAMPAIGN SUPPORTERS signed the FEC petitions of the bogus “Tea Party” candidate, bankrupt Peter DeStefano!
And, of course, none of the real tea party people in New Jersey ever heard of tea party candidate, “Peter DeStefano” before he mysteriously showed up on the ballot.
ps: Challenger Republican Jon Runyan is pulling ahead of Adler in a few polls & tied in others, as New Jersey opts to begin moving toward joining the rest of the nation in replacing a few utterly undesirable Democrat Congressmen.
In the NJ -12th, Scott Sipprelle is knocking hard on the door of America’s most liberal congressman, Rush Holt. Holt can hear the rap rap rap, and has even begun making up baseless and utterly slanderous stories about Scott Sipprelle. It was down to an unheard of five point race a week ago.
And in one of the most enthusiasm-laden races in the country in the NJ-6 CD, Republican Anna Little has put the self-described real “father of Obamacare,” Frank Pallone completely on the defensive.
Now, Pallone will not even whisper the word “healthcare!”
So long, Rush and Frank! And watch those swinging doors, John Adler!

While I hope Alexi loses, I’m reluctant to criticise him over this. The GOP has done similar things in the past and will do similar things in the future.
