Blame Bush past expiration date … in Massachusetts?
posted at 2:25 pm on October 27, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Maybe Democrats should have test-marketed the Blame Bush meme before taking it out for a spin in the final week of the midterm elections. After all, if Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) can’t sell in the 3rd CD in Massachusetts, which Cook rates as a D+9 district, where can it be sold? (Well, there’s always MSNBC.) McGovern gets boos and catcalls when he attempts to shift the blame for the financial collapse and Great Recession onto George W. Bush:
It’s not that Bush is entirely blameless, of course. Although at times he attempted to call attention to the problem at Fannie and Freddie, he also pushed the notion that government should interfere with mortgages to conduct social engineering, which was what created the housing bubble. Democrats like Chris Dodd and Barney Frank push for the mechanism that allowed Fannie and Freddie to securitize those loans to keep generating cash, using the mortgage-backed securities that infected and nearly killed the global financial sector. The roots of all this started in 1998 and 1999, when the Clinton administration — which McGovern praises — started pushing these interventions in the first place.
But there are more equally unserious statements here, especially when it comes to the deficit. The tax cuts “for the rich” that to which McGovern refers will cost $700 billion over the next ten years (and only “cost” if one considers that money the government’s in the first place, by the way), so the “cost” from the last seven years is significantly less. The US has spent about just over a trillion dollars in extra spending on the wars in both Afghanistan and Iraq, according to the National Priorities Project. over the last nine years. In comparison, Democrats in Congress have increased federal spending by a trillion dollars a year, and spent over $800 billion on Porkulus. Which of these spending examples have added more to the deficit in the shortest period of time? Three guesses, and the first two don’t count.

“Blame Bush” could only go so far, everybody knew it except the Obamacrats.
They’ve been blaming Bush for everything from Burnt Toast to parking tickets since 2000.
10 years was a good run.
But Barry keeps digging that hole. I wonder if he’ll reach China by ’12?

Your friend drives your car into the ditch.
Do you want to hear him blame other drivers, blame General Motors, blame the squirrels in the road, blame the sun?
Or do you want him to tell you how he’s going to get the car out of the ditch?
Democrats seem to feel the former is the proper response.

I’m so tired of this meme that “taxcuts must be paid for”. It’s our damn money. If you’re running in the red it means you’re spending more than you’re taking in.
You know what that means? Yeah, you cut spending. You don’t have to pay for not taking people’s property.
I hate the democrat socialists.

So instead of addressing the democratic support of the financial disaster of Fannie and Freddie…..genius here starts whining about Bush.
For one thing…democrats voted for the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan and Bush’s pharma bill.
If the Bush tax cuts are so bad…then why are democrats so gung ho about extending them……could it be because it’s smarter to increase business growth through tax cuts that generate taxable revenues instead of killing jobs through higher taxes……
I guess duke of dumbsh!t here missed the 5 trillion dollars spent by a democratic lead Congress since 2006…..
…..3 trillion spent by “Mr. Hope and Change” himself.

Somebody tell this idiot that you don’t “pay for” tax cuts.
People keeping more of what they earn is not an “expense.”
Government spending it on pork, entitlements, services, and yes, even wars, and other nonsense is what needs to be “paid for.”
Tax relief means that people pay lower rates and that when more people are paying at lower rates, there is more revenue (not less) coming in.
It’s the spending, spending, spending by government that has to be paid for. You don’t “spend money” letting people keep their money. That money isn’t the government’s to being with – it belongs to the taxpayer.

It’s not that his electorate don’t blame Bush; I’m sure they do. But after two years, they’re not asking “whose fault is it?” They’re asking “what have you done to fix the economy?” When the answer to that question is “Bush did it” the electorate isn’t going to be satisfied, because that’s not the question they were asking.

He did? What hyperbole. Bush pushed the notion that government should interfere with mortgages? And the reason was his desire for social engineering? And that interference and social engineering created the housing bubble?
Bush pushed home ownership which is in line with the Republican principle of private property ownership.
The cheap credit that brought down the economy started long before Bush got into office.
Good grief.

cmsinaz on October 27, 2010 at 3:37 PM
I’ve always found it funny. When Clinton left, there was a surplus. Yes, because a conservative Congress made it so. They were responsible for spending, and the budget. When Bush left, there were deficits. Yes, Republicans were in part, responsible…but a Democrat Congress took the reins in 2007. They had the budget, and the spending, and that’s pretty much where this crap took off.
When it’s a Republican president, it’s his fault. When we have a Dem president, it’s the previous presidents fault, and everyone elses. *sigh*

Well the poor structural design of the Social Security system starves the US economy of substantial private investment savings and thereby “costs” the US GDP 5% per year.
.
The 2010 GDP is estimated to be $14.677 trillion.
5% of $14.677 trillion = $734 billion a year. At a combined federal, state and local tax rate of ~ 35.8%
Social Security costs $263 billion in tax revenues per year
.
hmmmm FDR’s Social Security costs $263 billion of tax revenue per year.
Bush’s tax cut costs $70 billion in tax revenue per year. Hmmmm, and Social Security is going broke,
hmmmmm?

If the MA Republican party existed, they would have made some serious inroads this year. They still might, but it will be purely based on what the candidate does completely on their own. Some candidates would have been asked to move aside due to fatal flaws, Others would have had better media strategies, etc., etc…what a massive missed opportunity. We could have made some fundamental changes.

Ed, that’s an extremely unfair characterization of the MBS market. There is nothing inherently wrong with mortgage-backed securities as originally designed; securitization worked, and successfully, from the 1970s into the 1990s.
The problem arose when Congress (along with their accomplices for social good, including HUD secretary Andrew Cuomo) began to use Fannie and Freddie for social-engineering, rather than purely economic, reasons. The tale could fill a book (and it has) — and there’s plenty of blame to go around — but don’t fall into the trap of throwing out the proverbial baby with the bathwater.
This Village Voice article is a good place to start — and it rakes Cuomo, and others, over the coals.
Paul_in_NJ on October 27, 2010 at 7:27 PM
Nothing pisses me off more than the lie that Clinton had a surplus. In the late 90s the government just borrowed more money from itself to shift costs from one set of books to another set of books. (If I did that what do you think the IRS would say?). The total national debt increased every single year Clinton was in office, if there was a true surplus where did that money go?
clement on October 27, 2010 at 8:29 PM
McGovern needs to go for so so many reasons. Last night most of McGoverns stand-outs were Union members. He’s spent around 1.7+ million on his campaign!
Marty Lamb is the candidate that makes sense focusing on the economy, small businesses, real jobs, cutting government spending/taxes, addressing illegal immigration verses amnesty, is opposed to Obamacare, has common sense, along with integrity and principals.
Any support out there in this crazed election cycle appreciated – I’d especially love to see Marty Lamb win this one long with Baker, Beilat, Perry, McKenna – Common on Marty! That would be the best gift evah!
wubu on October 27, 2010 at 8:56 PM
There’s nothing more boring than the stupid unpaid-for-tax-cuts argument. More interesting, to me, is McGovern saying votes held ‘in the middle of the night’ on ‘complex’ issues, without sufficient debate are underhanded. He was talking Medicare part D – opposition to which is hard for Dems anyway, since to oppose it, in their mind, is to oppose old people and charity, which means you’re a racist or something, and so it must be very uncomfortable for him to use this particular club. I don’t have to look, then, to know that he must have opposed Obamacare, right? [You can almost see him realize what he's plunged into at about 0:43.]
