Video: Hickenlooper accuses rural Coloradans of “backward thinking”, ties them to Shepard murder

posted at 11:14 am on October 22, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Nothing says “sophisticate” quite like running down the rubes who live in the sticks, does it? After all, Barack Obama got elected after calling rural voters people “bitter” and who only “cling to guns or religion” through ignorance and fear. Via Mary Katharine Ham, John Hickenlooper offers an Obama-esque assessment of the rural and exurban voters in Colorado and assigns to them the same motivations that played into the murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming. The money quote occurs at about the two-minute mark in this interview (entire transcript here):

Hickenlooper: I think a couple things, I mean, you know, the tragic death of Matthew Shepard occurred in Wyoming. Colorado and Wyoming are very similar. We have some of the same, you know, backwards thinking in the kind of rural Western areas you see in, you know, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico.

Lane: We’re neighbors.

Hickenlooper: Right. And in a sense we’re all a community. And, at the same time, Denver has, I think, one of the more robust, politically active gay and lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered communities, really in the United States.

So a significant number of voters in rural areas suffer from “backwards thinking,” and Denver is the height of enlightenment? The voters in the “rural Western” areas of Hickenlooper’s state may find that rather surprising. They also may not appreciate a candidate for governor associating them with the hatred that resulted in the murder of Shepard. Not only is that in itself a form of bigotry, but it’s nonsensical, since the murder didn’t take place in Colorado at all.

Still, it’s good to finally know what Hickenlooper thinks of Coloradans who live outside the borders of Denver now, rather than discover it after the election.

Update: Misspelled “Shepard” in headline and article; corrected.  My apologies for the error.

Update II: It should be noted that this interview took place last year.  Not that it makes this better for Hickenlooper, but it was unclear earlier when this took place.

Nice work, Hick! Your very own “bigger clingers” remark, just in time for November 2nd.

Jeepers dude. So, you’re saying that when you get on a plane with someone who is, say…dressed in “rural western garb” that you get nervous, maybe scared? Is that what you’re trying to say, Mr. Hickenlooper? Not only if you’re flying out of Denver, but also Billings, Cheyenne, Albuequerque and all points in between, is that what you’re trying to say?

ted c on October 22, 2010 at 11:19 AM

I think even obama sequestered his bitter clingers remark to Pennsylvania and Murtha his racist comments to his own district, but dude—this is interstate bigotry here, straight up.

Wow. What a stuck up jerk.

“Backwards thinking”.

It is this type of haughty, boneheaded, we-be-superior-to-you attitude that is why the Democrats are in the quagmire they are in.

Hickenlooper may have pretty much torpedoed his own campaign here.

Wow, he said that like that was a list of cultural achievements, rather than a list of some of the many biological perturbations that can take place inside the womb during pregnancy. Only in the West are those thing considered not only a benefit, but an achievement at which we should marvel. This part of the world really had turned upside down. Black is white. White is Black. And all that.

To rip off Jim Treacher: it’s OK to generalize about a group, except when it’s not. It’s OK to blame a group for violence perpetrated by some of its members, except when it’s not.

reshas1 on October 22, 2010 at 12:07 PM

Has Hickenlooper relationship with the Chinook Fund been an issue at all in this race?

No, The Denver Post is in the tank for Hickenpooper, and all we have seen are veiled attacks passing as “news” at the conservative candidates, Buck, Tancredo, and even John Suthers for attorney General, who was weakly tied to the reason a serial killer killed people. It came out early, so it was proven to be the ridiculous farce it was.

ReformedAndDangerous on October 22, 2010 at 12:22 PM

Crimony. This, right after the thread about somebody claiming that being in Congress for decades was public service but being in the military for decades was not.

Are the Democrats getting more and more openly nasty and contemptuous of the rest of us the closer we get to the election (only 11 days left now!), or are bloggers just reporting this stuff more?

At the rate we’re going, before Election Day is done, one of these fools will have been discovered to have said in an interview that it would have been a good thing had more Americans died on 9/11 or something. I mean, I don’t think the mask has just slipped; I think it’s fallen off completely and gotten lost somewhere.

Aitch748 on October 22, 2010 at 12:24 PM

Hickenlooper disgusts me.

I live in rural Western Colorado, and I will tirelessly to keep this moron out of office.

It is critically that anyone who still support Maes change their vote to Tancredo. Yes, Maes has been treated unfairly to certain point, but the polls clearly indicates that our only chance to stop Hickenlooper from winning is to support Tancredo. Don’t waste your vote and ensure this despicable Democrat to become our Governor.

Norwegian on October 22, 2010 at 12:24 PM

Per this FBI table for 2008:

Colorado:

Jurisdictions reporting – 40
Pop in those jurisdictions – 2.57M
Number of S. O. Hate Crimes reported – 24

Denver:
Pop – 593k
S. O. Hate Crimes reported – 9
Rate: 1.51/100k

Rest of jurisdictions:
Pop – 1.977M
S. O. Hate Crimes reported – 15
Rate: 0.76/100k

I don’t know much about Colorado, but per this brief and general check, Higgenlooper is just stating his bigotry, not facts. Maybe he ought to use that stupid meme in Colorado Springs where the rate was 0.26/100k, 6 times less than Denver.

What BS.
I lived in Laramie & went to the UWYO at the same time Shepard was there.
I lived near the guy.
My girlfriend was the asst. manager of the KY Fried Chicken joint the killer worked at.
This guy was an angry POS & why did no one talk about the people who were attacked in town that day & night before this guy killed Shepard? They were NOT GAY.
Laramie is a fine town & was never anti-gay. It’s been a college town for how long? Give me a freaking break.
This was hyped so the homosexual community had something to complain about.
The news people rolled into town & basically assaulted all of us by painting us as a bunch of stupid red necks.
CO is full of pukes.
It’s also full of a lot of good people, most of them rural.
I knew lots of ranchers in CO who are good & honest respectful people.
And while a lot of us didn’t approve of that lifestyle, there weren’t persecutions of gay people as some sort of recreational activity like we were portrayed in Laramie.
CO has been ruined by POSes like this guy.
The Denver metro area is full of slimy tree hugging do gooder liberals bent on destroying the way of life that native Coloradans have built for more than a century.

And his dad was on the local news right after they found his body & begged people not to turn it into some anti-gay thing.
I remember this distinctly bcs at the time, everyone understood that the killer wasn’t just motivated by robbery, but bcs he was an angry psychopathic jerk.
Laramie is a small town, even though it’s about 20,000 or so folks.
All of us knew it had nothing to do with Shepard being gay.
He was in the wrong place at the wrong time & he hit on the wrong guy at the bar.

Badger40 on October 22, 2010 at 12:46 PM

So. Hickenlooper is saying that only rural hicks commit violent robberies, that kind of thing just doesn’t *happen* in the big city?

Or is he just, you know, as Liberals like to do, propping up some poor guy’s dead body for a political photo op (metaphorically speaking)?

Or is he just a jackass?

Merovign on October 22, 2010 at 12:47 PM

So this fool paints all rural citizens of Colorado and Wyoming as extremist bigots who have the potential to kill and no one says a word…
but Juan Williams comments of being a tiny bit afraid of the possibility of extremist Muslims on planes causes an outrage?

Yet another elitist rump, spouting off insults and generalizations about people he probably knows nothing about. Comparing them to people involved in a vicious hate crime is despicable. Rural Colorado is full of ranchers and miners and ski resorts and casinos and national parks. The jacka$$ just insulted a very broad range of voters.

By singling out the”backwards thinking” folks, he is using them in the shallow attempt to shame urban voters not to stoop down to their level. I was born and raised in Colorado. While I cannot stand Colorado, and I’m glad I finally got out of there, the people certainly deserve better than Hickenlooper. He spoke at our graduation at the University of Colorado at Denver in 2004. I couldn’t believe they invited that idiot to be the speaker. He had absolutely nothing intelligent to say. The bright spot of his speech was when Colorado Air National Guard F-16s interrupted by flying over after taking off from Buckley ANG base.

Hickenlooper is typical of the Democrats in the city of Denver and Boulder. They are ignorant and destructive. They look down upon the rest of the people of Colorado, yet they fail to comprehend how it is those people that actually make Colorado work. They look down upon everyone else, including those in the cities of Greeley, Fort Collins, Longmont, Loveland, Colorado Springs, Pueblo and Grand Junction. They don’t care how much harm they bring to everyone else if they live outside the city limits of Denver and Boulder. If Colorado puts Hickenlooper in as Governor, it deserves the disaster that awaits them.
