Juan Williams: I used to think the right was the intolerant side

posted at 4:25 pm on October 22, 2010 by Allahpundit

Heh. Between this and his hint-hinting on “Fox & Friends” this morning that maybe it’s time for NPR to leave the government-funded nest, he’s number one with a bullet on this week’s list of “Conservatives’ Favorite Liberals.” (Sorry, KP!)

As for his point that NPR was looking for a reason to get rid of him, they’ve already all but admitted it. The ombudsman claimed this morning that it was his alleged pattern of saying outrageously outrageous things on Fox that made this the final straw, although from what I can tell, the “pattern” consists of this incident plus maybe two others that no one who doesn’t read Media Matters obsessively would ever remember. Said the ombudsman, “Many [people who e-mailed us] have been troubled over the years by the dual role that Williams has played: balanced news analyst on NPR; more opinionated pundit on Fox.” And that’s the crux of it, isn’t it? Not the “opinionated pundit” part, which would be A-OK if he was on MSNBC playing pattycake with Olbermann about how racist the right is, but the fact that he’s on Fox conversing pleasantly with Bill O’Reilly. Lefty Michael Tomasky gives it to us straight:

[W]hat sort of non-conservative – one perceives Williams to be some degree of liberal; he’d probably protest that he’s just a reporter; in either case, he’s not a conservative – agreed to be an in-house flunky at Fox? I’m sure they offered him nice money, and money is money, and I can’t say with certainty that I’d have turned it down if Rupert had waved it under my nose.

But if you’re any kind of liberal at all, even in the softest and most non-political possible sense, it’s basically an indefensible thing to do. Fox News wants liberalism to perish from the face of the earth. Going on their air on a regular basis and lending your name and reputation to their ideological razzle-dazzle is like agreeing to be the regular kulak guest columnist at Pravda in 1929. For “balance”…

[I]n the final analysis, it’s not surprising, from a psychological point of view, that after all these years of going on their air and drinking their green-room coffee, Williams should choose to ingratiate himself with O’Reilly and his viewers with that Foxy rhetoric. In a sense, Williams got what was coming to him. Sleep with dogs, get fleas.

They needed a pretext to purge the resident “Fox News liberal” and they got one. Simple as that. Or rather, almost as simple as that: There’s also the small matter of their hysterical overreaction to Williams admitting to a twinge of anxiety about flying with devout Muslims in the post-9/11 era. For a response to that, read this clear-eyed op-ed at the Journal by Muslim Emilio Karim Dabul noting that, in certain circumstances, he gets a little nervous around Muslims at the airport too.

You’re scared of black people because a black person mugged you 26 years ago? Yeah, that’s pretty dumb. Sorry.
crr6 on October 22, 2010 at 5:30 PM

Nope. I’m not scared of all black people. Figures that you’d read something into a post that wasn’t there. And, by your lame response, you seem to indicate that there’s no need to worry about Muslims on airplanes because 3,000 people were killed by Muslims 9 years ago. Is there some kind of statute of limitations when the worrying becomes dumb? Is it 10 years? 15? Please, enlighten us…

If it helps, I’ve been mugged at gunpoint once as well (only 7 years ago, no less), and I don’t crap my pants every time I see a black dude.

I think it was pointed at my chest though. Does that count darwin?

crr6 on October 22, 2010 at 5:40 PM

I go to class with lots of arabs. Some aren’t even muslim. Should I be shaking in my boots during American Political Theory just because they sit together?

ernesto on October 22, 2010 at 5:35 PM

That’s not the question. What is it that changed Juan Williams? Was it sitting next to Muslims in Muslim garb during American Political Theory?

Was it going to the mall and seeing Muslims in Muslim garb?

No, it was the hijacking of four American aircraft, three of which flew into buildings killing 3,000 people.

Does a sane person become wary after an incident like that? Especially since Muslims have been hijacking aircraft since the ’70′s?

Did he say he’s wary of all Muslims? Anywhere, anytime?

What about the Muslim who wrote the piece in the WSJ that says he feels the same way?

darwin on October 22, 2010 at 5:40 PM

I know, but I still think it’s abhorrent to use it when referring to a black person. I can’t believe lorien would do that.

crr6 on October 22, 2010 at 5:26 PM

May lorien continue to be free to use anything he pleases. I use it a lot, in context, and assure you that I’m not afraid to be un-PC. If you don’t get what I mean, it’s not my challenge. If you know me, you fully understand that I abhor tyrants of any kind and wish for all the people to be free. Color, creed, religion and all the cultural differences leave me cold. How a person is and what they stand for are most telling. One has to know right from wrong. Not all the liberal imaginations are bigotry.

Plenty of large American farms couldn’t operate without their subsidies. In that regard, the market has spoken. I don’t ever really eat corn; why should my tax dollars go to fund it? Just because other people do? Not enough, apparently, to keep it going.

Some things are worth while, even if they don’t garner the audience necessary to fully fund their operation. Like American corn farmers, and sciencey radio shows like Radiolab.

Why is it with you liberals that you insist on arguing even the most obvious points?

NoDonkey on October 22, 2010 at 5:45 PM

The Totenburg comment is admittedly bad, but that was what, 15 years ago? If that’s the best you can come up with, it’s pretty weak. Also remember that with Williams, it wasn’t just the Muslim comment that sunk him. It was a pattern of such comments.

crr6 on October 22, 2010 at 4:43 PM

LOL, you can’t have it both ways. First of all, you seem to think that the “age” of Nina’s comment should make it irrelevant, but then you say that Juan’s problem included what he said in the past.

JW admits in his interview with George Steppinupinit that Williams has seen managemetn come and go over his ten years at NPR and that the hostility towards Fox News had escalated with the current management.

crr6: You are being deliberately obtuse about what JW said on BOR. He followed up his personal, visceral reaction to seeing Muslim-garbed passengers with an awareness that it is not a good idea to paint a whole group with a smear based on the actions of a few.

I myself have witnessed questionable behavior by ME young men on flights or preparatory to flights, enough to raise red flags of concern. Prior to the rule that passengers must stay in their seats as a plane begins descent, I saw young ME men simultaneously arise from acattered sections of the plane and head toward the bathrooms. A rehearsal or psy-ops? Who knows?

I watched a young ME man sweating bullets as we headed in line toward final security clearance before boarding on an overseas flight while his obviously cowed, veiled wife stood by passively with her eyes downcast. (Who knows what was going on with that marriage that did not appear to be made in heaven?)

I wonder if Juan will start to question his other beliefs about conservatives. Wednesday I saw him in a row with Hannity over rent controls. He honestly thought they were helpful.

But if that were the case, then why are rents in NY so high, despite decades of rent control? Easy. Nobody wants to build inexpensive apartments, because the government won’t allow thos buildings to turn a profit. So the supply dries up, prices go up, and the remaining low-cost apartments devolve into ratholes.

What really sunk him was writing the book “Enough”.

Definitely. I remember him on some said show one day talking about that book and I was like, “This is not the juan williams I thought I knew.” He’s a lefty, but for some issues he has his head on straight.

Sudsidies are designed to keep the large farms from gobbling up the smaller ones. Grow too much, you lose them. In reality, if you let the free market takes its course, there would less farmers in the country for sure (small farms would go away), but we’d probably end up paying less for our food as more efficient farming mechanisms would come into play.

Sudsidies keep old, out of date technology in fashion. Same with illegals – their low price point makes it un-necessary for farms to modernize to improve production.

The difference between Juan, and a typical liberal is…Juan admits his apprehensions, but uses logic, and intelligence to allay them. Knowing millions of Americans feel the same way.

The typical liberal has neither the courage, convictions or honesty to admit they feel the same way. Rather, they hide it, and use their self appointed moral compass to judge others.

Bullsh*t. I said ‘more aware of my surroundings’. It means avoiding certain neighborhoods and making sure my car doors are locked and windows are up when I’m in it. I didn’t say I hate or worry about all black men. The point is, for those who missed it completely, is that events can make someone look at the world a little differently. I look at driving through a certain area of New Haven a little differently than I did when I was younger. I have to, because I don’t want a repeat of what happened to me. Juan W. looks at flying a little differently than he did on 9/10/01. Events shape our perspective. It doesn’t mean that bigotry or hatred is involved. We’re talking about normal human reactions. Normal, that is, unless you are the top brass at NPR. Then, normal human traits become unacceptable.

Follow the money.Juan’s firing comes on the heels of NPR receiving a $1.8 million grant from the Open Society Foundations (Institute) to begin a project called Impact of Government that will add at least 100 journalists at NPR member radio stations in all 50 states over the next three years.

As you’ve probably heard by now, George Soros, the Puppet Master, is the money behind the Open Society Institute. The following information comes from discoverthenetworks.org:

Established in 1993, the Open Society Institute (OSI) is the most prominent of the numerous foundations belonging to Soros. OSI proclaims that it is “a nonpartisan, nonpolitical entity” whose funding agendas are “wholly separate” from “George Soros’s private political activities,”. Yeah, right.

joejm65 on October 22, 2010 at 5:58 PM

Is this really not just a liberal problem??

ernesto on October 22, 2010 at 5:52 PM

It’s not just a liberal problem. It’s dependence issue.

Look, it’s simple. This is the same problem with welfare, food stamps, etc etc.

Would you rather have $50 for doing nothing or $70 for hard work. I’d take the $50. I think most people would. That’s just human. We’re lazy creatures.

I don’t know how to break the cycle, really. Cuz if you cut off sudsidies, a lot of people (short term) would probably go under. It’s one of those things, I think, where you have to phase it out…and I generally support this idea for unemployment, food stamps, etc too.

Let’s say you earn $70 on food stamps. But if you get a job, you lose them (or your unemployment or whatever). So there’s an actual dis-incentive to get a job. If you phase things out a little bit…say if you get a part time job you still get some of your benefits (the net is higher than the subsidy gets you alone), there is an incentive to find work. So instead of a hard cut off, it graduates a little bit.

As you know, I’m sure, the longer you extend unemployment benefits, the longer it takes people to find work. If you graduate it a little bit, then people will look sooner (probably) as there is an incentive to find work ahead of time to get more money.

Farm subsidies could work the same way. If you produce “too much” you don’t lose it, but it goes away as you ramp up production, but your net profits are still higher than sitting back and doing nothing.

I’m sure that made no sense at all. LOL

Artists and scientists are already on the government dole.

darwin on October 22, 2010 at 5:59 PM

NPR s/b defunded on a federal and state level. They get way more than 1-3% – this is very deceiving. Patricia Schroeder, the insufferable witch of then, did more for them than is permissible to mention.

They hide under the government umbrella and it’s time to sever the cord.

joejm65 on October 22, 2010 at 5:59 PM

Then, normal human traits become unacceptable.

joejm65 on October 22, 2010 at 5:52 PM

I’m not calling you a bigot whatsoever. But you are the one who brought up your story in saying that you didn’t used to be frightened about this particular scenario until you were robbed.

Being more aware of your surroundings is just smart, but your comment was made in response to crr6 talking about those who are frightened about black people, and the implication of your comment in context was that after this event, your perception changed.

If that’s not what you were trying to say, then why mention the story at all? If you weren’t commenting on your change of perception with blacks, then how was your comment a relevant response to this:

Seeing a black person should not make you frightened you are going to be mugged. If it does, I’m not sure how you make it through a day without wetting your pants.
crr6 on October 22, 2010 at 5:20 PM

Esthier on October 22, 2010 at 5:59 PM

What’s your point then? You said you’re: “shall we say, more aware of my surroundings”? It’s pretty hard not to read something into that because on its own, it’s meaningless.

crr6 on October 22, 2010 at 5:42 PM

You are a schmuck, aren’t you? Anyone who is not aware of their surroundings is an idiot. We had a slew of murders and muggings in some of the most expensive shopping areas in South Florida. Pay attention! It doesn’t make you a bigot.

katy the mean old lady on October 22, 2010 at 6:00 PM

Do you see why it’s not very persuasive to come back later after making a racist comment to say “See, I was only being pretend racist! And you took the bait!” Seriously, buzz off.

crr6 on October 22, 2010 at 5:51 PM

Do you see why it’s not very persuasive to claim a comment is racist; then immediately back off when you learn who made the original comment and in its context. ;)

See Hillary. Saying “the HoR is run like a plantation” to the NAACP. On MLK day.

It’s as simple as them getting on with reporting news and whatnot without the almost NASCAR-like ability to turn left on any subject. If they’re going to report the news, report, don’t offer opinions or spin while reporting for the network.

ernesto on October 22, 2010 at 5:56 PM

Why? Where’s the serious need? NPR has said repeatedly that tax payer funds are a small portion of the money they receive.

I used to listen to Christian radio stations, and they survived just fine on listener donations. It’s certainly not impossible.

We’re ridiculously in the red right now as a nation. We need to have a good reason for every dollar we spend. I’ve never seen one for public television or radio.

ernesto on October 22, 2010 at 5:56 PM

I don’t think folks would mind funding public broadcasting, if it represented all thoughts, and ideas. If it catered to both sides of the aisle, and more. But it doesn’t. It leans left, reports left, and is a liberal entity now.

Add to that, the fact that Mr.Williams was fired for expressing a feeling…without regard to the entire context of the conversation is revealing. This outfit has no room for individual thoughts, or expression, and want to quell freedom of speech. They fired the man for expressing himself. That’s truly sad, and very telling.

I don’t believe liberalism is the answer to anything. I’m a conservative, and I don’t feel any of my tax dollars should go to fund a liberal entity, that feels it needs to put a kibosh on freedom of speech. It’s as simple as that. For me.

capejasmine on October 22, 2010 at 6:07 PM
