Dem Congressman: 24 years in military not public service
posted at 8:45 am on October 22, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Remember the furor that erupted when Barbara Boxer equated serving in the Senate to serving in the military? Jim Moran won’t have any of that. In an appearance two weeks ago, the Congressman from Virginia’s 8th CD told an audience of his followers that his Republican opponent, Patrick Murray, was a “typical,” “stealth” candidate with no record of political action, and no record of public service, unlike himself, who has served almost 20 years in Congress. Of course, Colonel Patrick Murray spent 24 years in the US Army, including combat tours in four different conflicts, as Barbara Hollingsworth points out in the Washington Examiner:
Note too that it’s not as if Moran didn’t know about Murray’s service record. Moran actually sneers at it, claiming that Murray had “taken a government check” for 24 years as a member of the military, as if Murray hadn’t earned every penny of it working in defense of his nation.
I can’t imagine this kind of mocking would fly anywhere except in the most Leftward bastions of academia, and perhaps not even there. In a state with a long tradition of military leadership — and defense contractors — Moran’s denigration of military service should shock voters, as well as his arrogance in assuming that doling pork is a higher public-service calling than putting one’s life on the line to defend America. This is an incumbent who badly needs a forced retirement.

There are certain Democrats capable of making my blood boil, Jim Moran is one of them. How he can get away with saying this, even with lawyers and government employees, is beyond me. Between him and Jim McDermott, from Washington State, you have 2 guys that show nothing but contempt for the country and the military.
With more Republicans paying attention this election, there’s always hope he’ll get voted out, even in a safe district.

Check out Murray’s website and donate. This is the year to clean out the DC cesspool.

Moran’s district is the City of Alexandria, the Richmond Highway Corridor (lots of blacks), and the immediate suburbs of Arlington, with loads of young liberals living in high rises. There is also a huge immigrant population. This means Moran is in Congress for life, should he wish it.
The retired military live in the suburbs farther from Washington, and hopefully Gerry Connelly, the left-wing freshman congressman, who took over “moderate” Tom Davis’ district, will be voted out from our district.

What a douche. At 21 years of service and counting, I know from experience exactly who and what I serve. Mr. Moran can kiss my a$$.
CantCureStupid on October 22, 2010 at 10:02 AM
This Navy vet salutes you.
It makes me sick whenever I hear this despicable attitude expressed towards our military men and women–especially when it comes from some garbage can sitting in the Halls of Congress.

Sorry to point out to you, Ed, that Arlington, VA is one step away from San Francisco…this sort of contempt flies there.
Lockstein13 on October 22, 2010 at 10:06 AM
No, they can’t afford to live there, nor can most active duty people who work at the Pentagon. That’s why Moran can get away with crap like this. Most of the people who live in the 8th are federal bureaucrats, lawyers, lobbyists, environmental activists, etc. People whose livelihood depneds on an ever-growing federal government. Plus there is a pretty large black population in Alexandria that is reliably Democratic, and a growing population of Muslim immigrants who Moran is constantly pandering to.
I used to live in Alexandria and left because I could barely afford to live there. I will never forget the time an Air Force Lt. Colonel and his family of 5 rented the tiny house across the street from us. Some of the finest people I have ever met. They had lived all over the world, he flew in Desert Storm and had been stationed in Tokyo before getting sent to the Pentagon. His wife was a saint. I couldn’t imagine living the life they lived. I thought of them immediately when I read of Moran’s comments. These people were public servants in every sense of the word.
Jim Moran only serves himself – he pretty much admitted 6 years ago that he keeps running for reelection because he needs the money and has no skills to do anything else. Why those idiots keep reelecting him is beyond me.

No joke, I’m having trouble holding onto my breakfast over this. It’s sick-making that filth like this can hold office for life in this country. We have some gerrymandered lefty congressturds-for-life in Texas, but I don’t think any of them would dare to say the stuff Moran does.
My eternal gratitude to all you vets and your families.

Brave Sir James Moran … standing athwart the bridge and fending off marauding hordes of lobbyists with his bottomless bucket for campaign donations. Now that, citizens, is public service!

I’m from Virginia (sadly, I don’t live there anymore) and we used to call him Jim “Moron.” This is just one in a long string of absolutely stupid blather that emanates from his piehole. Never been a fan of this d-bag.

Gang-of-One on October 22, 2010 at 10:31 AM
Moran has made a string of anti-Semitic statements that would have made him a pariah in almost any other district in the country. They haven’t hurt him, so I don’t imagine this will, either.
Athanasius on October 22, 2010 at 10:38 AM
I would really like to see some national Republicans jump all over this today and over the weekend. DNC Chairman Tim Kaine is from Virginia and should be forced to either endorse or repudiate Moran. So should Gerry Connolly, whose district is next to Moran’s and includes a lot of the Pentagon workers and militray retirees who can’t afford to live in the 8th. Does Connolly believe all those active duty and retired military constituents of his are not public servants?

Please VA-8, I’m begging you – toss this tosser!

20 years as a congressman, in his case, is not public service, it’s more equivalent to welfare fraud.
Eren on October 22, 2010 at 10:58 AM
“..that his Republican opponent, Patrick Murray, was a “typical,” “stealth” candidate with no record of political action..”
..and this is a bad thing?
The War Planner on October 22, 2010 at 11:01 AM
You got that right!
Try to find a decent gunsmith in the Reston/Herndon area… even with the new range in Ashburn I still trek out into the wilds beyond Leesburg to get to one, but that is now much closer time-wise than Reston-Herndon ever was. It is good living in a community where the neighbors own shotguns and rifles, and it is just low rent enough so that senior police officers can afford a place here.
I’m glad Wolf is getting his act together, and still wish he didn’t try to sheepdog Pelosi & Co. in Syria, but I can overlook that at this point for going after DoJ.
ajacksonian on October 22, 2010 at 11:04 AM
I can guarantee you that no local northern Virginia paper will report this. They are Moran’s loyal bootlick codependents. They cover over his every sin like the children of an alcoholic family.

Don’t forget that Reston, 20 miles away, was added to his gerrymandered district to provide him with or to keep lib votes all together. Restonians are the worst of the grownup hippie left.

I will also add that this was probably the LEAST stupid thing Moran has had to say.
I friend of mine honked at him to take a right-turn-on-red years ago in Alex. He followed her to the grocery store, came in after her, and berated her in front of her 4 year old daughter. He has also lied about priests and grabbed small black children because he thought he was being carjacked. There is no end to his antics.

Ed, you give the “Leftward bastions of academia” too much credit.
tgharris on October 22, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Jim Moron is typical of the left, so I’m not as surprised as I could be. People like Moron, Princess Pelosi and the Dalai Obama see military personnel as nothing but scary servants with guns and strange haircuts, made to do nothing more than die on command. Most liberals, by nature, are not man (or woman) enough to join the armed forces; very few can make it, there. To me, political service is the lowest rung of the ladder of national service, including, even, the Executive Office.

That’s not all he needs…
Mr. Grump on October 22, 2010 at 11:20 AM
The fundamental problem with Jim Moran is that after all these years he still has yet to learn to spell his last name correctly.
(That’s with two “o’s” Jim boy…in case ya might be wonderin’ ’bout it…)
coldwarrior on October 22, 2010 at 11:29 AM
The video was great except they sent the wrong message. He doesn’t need to apologize, he needs to be be voted out of office. A better closing line would have been: “Jim Moran should be replaced on November 2nd.”
Alma on October 22, 2010 at 11:31 AM
What can you expect from a MORAN?
gullxn on October 22, 2010 at 11:44 AM
Hey, Restonians are not all bad. There are a few conservatives that live in Reston. We got a Republican candidate for the State House to 40% of the vote less than 2 years ago.

I lived in the Rosslyn Heights section of Arlington for a decade. Great place to live when you are single or before you have children.
Once we had a baby, I found a job in Texas and moved.
I don’t miss DC at all. If I were still there, I’d be living in a $500K shoebox, sitting in traffic and miserable. Not a place for families unless you’re pulling down at least $250K a year.
NoDonkey on October 22, 2010 at 12:00 PM
Again, we need to Term Limit Congress and the bureaucracy, and end career politicians and bureaucrats.
By the Way, the majority of Americans who want smaller government has grown to 65% (h/t to TaxProf).

It is getting hard to look at these career politicians. They’ve been looking at other politicians so long over their surf ‘n turfs, they dont see how they have evolved into Overfed Lobsters themselves
Trouble is you turn jokers like him out to pasture, he ends up a lobbyist or on a committee to investigate the next hurricane. They multiply like flies and bring their choldren into the fraternity. Everyone has a job for someone as long as they play ball

One did — the Pentagon on 9/11. His district also includes the Marine Corps Memorial and Arlington national Cemetery.

Murray has just used this issue in his e-mails to supporters. Since I don’t watch TV or listen to radio, I’m not sure if it’s getting out to the wider Northern VA public.

I’ve been calling local talk radio requesting that they cover this. I don’t watch TV either but I do listen to radio and I hope they cover it.

He’s one O away from being a moron in name as well as in fact. But the super-irony is that a servicemen, continually in peril, is not considered, in Moran’s myopic view, to have reached “public service” status. That appellation only gets applied to pot-bellied, drunken skirt chasers out to destroy the nation is a sea of slime, corruption, graft and thievery.

Patrick Murray is the Republican candidate who is running against Democrat Rep. Jim Moran in (VA-8)
According to the FEC.gov website http://www.fec.gov/DisclosureSearch/HSRefreshCandList.do?category=disH&stateName=VA&congressId=08&election_yr=2010 is running behind Rep. Moran in his fundraising.

This is true. Northern VA is a big reason why Obama was able to flip Virginia in 2008. Lots of government workers and young childless professionals who can afford the high cost of living being so close to DC.
