Debate moderator to Rubio: How’s it feel to be anti-Latino?
posted at 2:38 pm on October 20, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Florida politics have gotten ugly, haven’t they? A Democratic incumbent calls his Republican opponent a member of the Taliban, and now the son of a Cuban immigrant is not just called anti-immigration, but anti-Latino. And this time it’s not Charlie Crist who sets himself up as the arbiter of Hispanic authenticity, but the debate moderator. Greg Hengler clips this dreadful question and memorable response from Rubio:
It seems to escape the intellectual capacity of Rubio’s opponents, and many on the Left, that one can be pro-immigration while demanding and end to illegal immigration. Marco Rubio makes this point very clearly and concisely by demanding the rule of law apply not just to Americans but also those who want to enter our country. It’s hardly anti-Latino to demand equal treatment under the law, and to demand that the federal government fulfill one of its actual Constitutional duties in securing the nation’s borders.
Basically, the moderator called Rubio a bigot. Rubio responded with a lot more class than he was afforded.

C’mon. Latin class was awesome. What other foreign language could you tell a teacher, “How do you know I’m pronouncing it wrong?”

“Debate” is yet another word that the liberal media have bastardized beyond all recognition.
These moronic insult-slinging contests (whether the so-called “moderator” joins in or not) have nothing to do with an actual debate. They are specifically designed to PREVENT any attempt at rationally attacking and defending a resolution.

Another point regarding the moronator.
Askingmaking a statement like that directed to one member of the debate does not a debate make. It is/was an attack of a candidate. That moronator should be slapped down to his pink meat.sicoit on October 20, 2010 at 3:30 PM

I just got asked a similar question recently by a lefty. They wondered “how in the world an adoptive parent of a child who was born in another country can be against immigration reform.” This parent has the moral high ground, apparently. I have never seen a conflict at all. We jumped through all the hoops to do it legally. My children got in line. We paid the fees and the taxes, and did the required song & dance.
The fact is, they’re not going to stop demonizing, trying to guilt-trip, and trying to shut up those with whom they disagree. The difference is: I don’t care anymore what they think. I won’t sit down. I won’t shut up. I will vote my conscience. I won’t keep trying to prove that I love people who don’t look like me, and will just keep living a life that exemplifies it.

Even now ‘race’ is more about ‘culture’ than genes. Liberals use cultural differences to make every cultural or religious nuance a matter of moral relativism. So, a Peruvian (who is the product of Asians crossing over through Berengia, Spanish Europeans and whatever was here before the Asiatics arrived) is now an oppressed Hispanic. Of course, they are oppressed so long as the pigment of their skin is not so light as to call them whiteys.
JonPrichard on October 20, 2010 at 3:40 PM
Easy answer, -they don’t want them to exceed in the way you say. Immigrants are the democratics most readily available source of new recruits for their entitlement class. Coming from somewhere with a system of education even poorer than ours, they are easy to bend to socialism. Democratics would be thrilled to keep immigrants on food stamps and welfare forever if they get votes out of the deal.

That moderator should come down to the border and spend a week or two with the wonderful drug cartels in Mexico…

Seven Percent Solution on October 20, 2010 at 3:42 PM
Perhaps many people do not understand this but here goes:
Hispanic people carry European genes in their DNA, more specifically, Caucasian AKA ‘white’ genes.
Many gene pools included in the Hispanic group can contain anywhere from roughly 30% up to 90% or more Caucasian genes in their DNA.
So to say that Hispanics or LAtinos are not ‘white’ is actually not really true.
And skin color is genetic.
There are so many variations that there is no way you can base a person’s ‘race’ upon the color of their skin.
Ignorance is astounding on this subject.
Which is why I hate the pigeon-holing ‘race’ word bcs it pretty much means zippo.
Badger40 on October 20, 2010 at 3:44 PM

NoDonkey on October 20, 2010 at 3:44 PM
If I’m Hispanic and someone says I look like I could be Asian, am I not a racist if I am insulted? Shouldn’t Asians be insulted that Hispanics are insulted by the mere thought they may look Asian?
JonPrichard on October 20, 2010 at 3:45 PM
I know this. This is exactly my point. Judging from his facial features, it looks like he and his Cuban parents are descended from Spanish people with probably no indigenous blood in them. So how is he not white? I repeat the question–how does speaking Spanish mean one is non-white? This is the kind of identity poltics baloney that the Democrats use.

I can’t watch videos now, so who the he!! was this moderator? What the he!!???
I think every debate from here on out, should consist of one moderator that represents the left, one the right, and maybe an independent. So all are represented.
These constant debates with slanted moderators are hardly right, or fair. This must be demanded. The left would demand it, if the shoe were on the other foot. Enough is enough with this. And all questions asked should be agreed apon by all moderators.
I’m so sick of conservatives being hung out like this, with dumb a$$ questions like this. Rubio I’m sure, as I’ve read in previous comments, did a great job answering, but my problem is…this is a question that shouldn’t have been asked in the first place.

The moderator should have been booed out of the debate.
I’m mostly Northern European (Irish, Scottish, English, Norwegian) my husband is almost 100% of Irish decent. I was once asked by a young black child if I was Chinese because he thought I was “yellowish” and had almond shaped eyes. My brother was called “Chico” in school because he was very dark. He played outside all day long with his shirt off in the summers. In college, my husband was asked if he was “new-breed” Japanese (whatever that is). My mother saw pictures of Inuits/Eskimoes when she was a child and thought, that is what I am. My daughter has been asked twice if she was of mixed race (meaning half black) from two different Asian hair stylists. I’ve never been insulted or upset about any of the inquiries. It just goes to show you how silly it is to assume anything about anyone by how they look.
But, because of all of these unusual inquiries, I did participate in the National Geographic Genome Project and it came back that my most recent ancestors were from Northern Europe.
BTW ~ I haven’t read through the whole thread so if anyone has already brought this up, apologies. Didn’t Professor Gates (of the Obama “stupidly” comment) just run DNA on a bunch of celebs and didn’t he group Native American with Asian when speaking of their DNA?

It makes you YOU. You, just like every other single person that’s ever lived, has a unique set of wants, needs, desires and fears.
But Progressives don’t deal with individuals, because it’s harder to justify rules for individuals than rules for groups. Groups are convenient scapegoats, because people always assume that THEY aren’t a member of the offending group.

I disagree with Ed’s characterization of the moderator’s statement. He didn’t call Rubio anti-Latino or a bigot, he repeated charges in his role as questioner. It was a tough, blunt question, to be sure, but we need to be very careful not to smear without reason anyone who challenges us. This is an extremely important moral distinction with the left, which if we lose, we have nothing of real value to offer the nation.
It may be that the moderator actually believes the criticism of Rubio that he raised, but that is beside the point. The issue was the question. The moderator had the right to raise it, and frankly, I’m glad he did. It gave Rubio a chance to define himself and show himself reliable under pressure, both of which he did very well.
Meanwhile, the last part of that video, showing Obama campaigning, had the crowd chanting “yes, we did!”. But it was obviously orchestrated. Not only the signs are mass-produced for the sheep, the crowd responses are as well. This is a sad commentary on the political dynamics of obama and the left.

CCRWM on October 20, 2010 at 4:51 PM
Let’s examine that question:
When a person asks a long, specifically detailed question like this, it’s like a DNA test confirming their lack of critical thinking skills as well as their acceptance of leftist propaganda about what is “good” for subdivided ethnic groups.
Rubio seemed ready for it, and gave a great answer. However, as a right-of-center black man, I wish he could have had time to politely — but forcefully — blast the question as prejudicial and bigoted, and dare the moderator to logically defend it.
For example: “Many commentators” call Rubio’s platform “anti-Latino.” What makes it so, praytell? Because he supports SB 1070, which has negatively impacted law-abiding Latinos how, exactly? He opposes the DREAM act, which helps native-born and naturalized Latinos how, exactly? He supposedly opposes a “pathway to citizenship” when his parents were legal Latino immigrants? How, exactly? He supports English as an official language, which hurts Latinos how, exactly?
Notice how the seamlessly the question turns from one accusing Rubio of self-hatred and extremism into one that also brings in the accusation of carpetbagging: He’s “a darling of the Tea Party movement across the country,” and thus, Florida voters aren’t supposed to feel comfortable that he’s not “beholden” to out-of-state interests? (Wow, that’s refreshing — usually it’s Northerners who are bitching and moaning about Republicans being beholden to the Deep South!) Dude acts as if he hasn’t checked the polls and noticed that Rubio is in the lead in Florida, which is a pretty good indicator that Sunshine Staters don’t see the Tea Party agenda as being “from without.”
The moderator — or, whoever wrote that question — designed it to have so many objectionable premises that Rubio wouldn’t be able to address them all. With the time Rubio was given, he did better than I ever could have expected.

JonPrichard on October 20, 2010 at 4:58 PM
This moderator – and fellow twits on the Left – need to be publically berated, harangued, and questioned about their apparent racism – *they* are the ones that equat *hispanic/latino* with *illegal* as though the two are inseparable.
Ir’s not those that are against illegal immigration that are racists – it’s those who freely and inherently associate ‘illegal’ with ‘hispanic’.
This is part and parcel with the Left’s core belief that minorities simply are incapable of any kind of success without outside assistance. It’s racist at the heart of the thought to begin with. “You, you entire race of people (well, just you few specific races) are inherently inferior to the point of an inability to survive or progress without the assistance of others.” Everything the Left says it stands for with regards to minorities effectively and clearly makes the point that the Left feels and believes that way.
Midas on October 20, 2010 at 5:01 PM
I would have loved to hear Rubio pose two questions back to the moderator in response. The first is more of a two-fold question (so perhaps there are three)
1) “Who decided what is or is not a Latino postion? Are you insinuating all Latinos are the same?”
2) “Do you not believe that any law that even acknowledges someone in racial terms is by definition racist? I stand equality under the law regardless of race, religion, or creed…”
Watch everyone choke.

ProudPalinFan on October 20, 2010 at 5:24 PM
Color me under-impressed with that defense. He though the question valid, worth asking, and meaningful (or he wouldn’t have asked it). He found no reason to source it (i.e. he thought it was widespread and valid), and he deliberately pushed it to give the attack more airtime (if he thought it was unfair, why do that). What part of that is him being impartial and moderating things?
“Here’s a smear I heard or thought up and am attributing to anonymous ‘others’” is a bit more accurate than the “many XXXX” label; but oddly isn’t used as much. I guess accuracy isn’t important when you’re a moderator.
If we can play that game I can state a random personal attack on you with a “many people say”… but lets be honest it would just be a gratuitous personal attack. I’m trying to cut back on those… so lets pretend I did and admit you’d see that as me attacking you; not “quoting random anonymous unsourced others” attacking you.
If you want to “repeat charges” you specify who you’re quoting, what they said, where they said it… you know; the basics of a halfway decent quote. Not a vague attack sourced to unknown and unnamed “commentators” in unknown publications at an unknown time with unknown specifics.

While my ancestors were freeing the slaves, the moderator’s ancestors were probably slaughtering them for sport yet I am a “white oppressor” and the moderator is a “victim”.

Re choosing the venue, Rubio is the leader at this time so he could have pushed for the choice of a more politically balanced and professional moderator. He had the power. On the other hand, if intelligent voters see that he went into the enemy camp and still won the debate, he may win over even more voters.
In other cases such as with COD, she had little bargaining power so she ended up at a college of law debating a lawyer. Coons could have refused a debate and got away with it.

Does Marco Rubio have a like-minded sibling who could move to Illinois and run for Senate here?
Yeah I know – the weather in the winter sucks. They could consider it a great humanitarian gesture. The candidates we have here this election cycle smell.
