Finally: George Will vs. Meghan McCain on the tea-party movement
posted at 4:30 pm on October 17, 2010 by Allahpundit
People will goof on Amanpour for booking this, but purely as spectacle, it’s a stroke of genius. Be honest: You’re dying to see how this meeting of the minds played out.
Two key moments. The first comes at around 2:45, when MegMac lays into Christine O’Donnell. For thoughts on that, see MKH’s wry tweet from this morning. The other starts at around 7:35 and runs through 9:30, when Will replies to her point that the tea party is “intolerant” and losing younger voters rapidly. In fact, it’s The One who’s lost 16 points among college students since last year; tea partiers do skew older demographically, but if the movement was as repugnant to young voters as Meg seems to think, the Democrats shouldn’t be having trouble motivating them to turn out next month. Will’s correct too, of course, that the tea party’s influence has led the GOP to reprioritize, moving fiscal issues to the top of the agenda while quietly letting hot-button social concerns slide. Whether that’ll be true for much longer is a different matter, though: Most tea partiers are socially conservative and grassroots icons like DeMint are working hard to cultivate that aspect of their politics. The more overtly socially conservative the TP becomes, the more it risks alienating socially libertarian younger (or older) voters who might otherwise sympathize with its goal of getting America’s fiscal house in order. But then, that battle to define right-wing factions has been going on forever; all they’re arguing about here is which side, the social cons or libertarians, is ahead when it comes to defining the tea party. Will’s right. For now.

Sorry Jetboy. Your track record for knowing what is good for the GOP hasn’t recovered from:
“Charlie Crist is Awesome, great Republican. He would NEVER leave the party, he is a principled man.”
What is that statute of limitations for supporting Charlie Crist?
portlandon on October 17, 2010 at 8:21 PM
I wasn’t going to watch but had some time to kill…
… I came away with two thoughts.
Who are these people and why would anyone actually listen to them…
… and why the he%l aren’t they talking about the failed ideology and social engineering policies that have put our country in it’s current situation if they are taking the time to air this tripe???
Seven Percent Solution on October 17, 2010 at 8:21 PM
I said it before and I’ll say it again. You’re voting for the wrong party. You’re looking to the wrong people to get the legislation you want.
Now that I see you’re against the mere premise of the Tea Party movement, it’s crystal clear what you’re about. Go campaign for Crist.
hawkdriver on October 17, 2010 at 8:21 PM
Exactly. I’m glad I’m not the only one who remembers.

Your example does not support your theory. Both CK and Tokyo Rove are social cons. Try again.

ABC is giving her legitamacy when it is obvious she has none. She is the daughter of a billionare and her father ran for the president. How does this qualify you as being a great poltical thinker or even a credible pundit.

Rightwingguy on October 17, 2010 at 8:53 PM
Your question is rhetorical of course. It doesn’t qualify her as anything. If her father hadn’t been pushed to the front of the pack by the GOP in a year where they probably thought no one was going to beat the historical Donk anyways, no one would even know her name. Dose she even understand how much his “Maverickness” has pissed us off in the past?

There are REAL stories that no one is covering. Stories that can help OUR SIDE win.

This stuff is bordering on TMZ territory.
How about looking into this:

gary4205 on October 17, 2010 at 9:11 PM
It wasn’t that they pointed out her flaws, it was that they continued to do so publicly after the primaries. It’s not really necessary before the primaries, but afterward it serves no useful purpose for conservatism, and ends up looking petulant and helping the other side.
DrMagnolias on October 17, 2010 at 9:15 PM
She demeaned this show by being on the panel, if that is possible. George Will must have been gritting his teeth sitting there having to pretend she is on an intellectual level above a turnip. I agree with the person early in this thread who mentioned she shows such contempt for Republicans, especially the women, why does she even call herself a Republican?

Seriously, I watched this and I just wanted to reach out and shake any of these people, George Will especially, and ask them if they’ve ever actually been to a Tea Party event. Really, you want to know what’s the big deal? Go see for yourself. Big money doesn’t propel this thing – it might give it some support and a microphone but that’s pretty much where it ends – people are getting up and jumping into this thing with both feet.

I’m a loyal Republican, a fiscal-military conservative, and staunchly anti-abortion but I don’t trust the tea party. There are too many wild cards in the movement (i.e. Ron Paul, Alex Jones) for me to support it. I want to like O’Donnell, but she seems to take a similar stance that the fringe elements often take.
Cr4sh Dummy on October 18, 2010 at 12:44 AM
Speaking as a part of the same generation that MeggieMac supposedly speaks for, I want to say: STFU.
Clueless, vacuous, vain, paranoid, completely void of substance…do us all a favor, and stop acting as though you’re speaking for us when you’re only speaking for yourself and your own RINO views. Incidentally, it’s you and your moronic opinions that would push any young conservatives away from the GOP, not bring them in.
It was phrased best in Billy Madison: “What you’ve just said is the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point, in your rambling, incoherent response, were even you close anything that can be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”
….Idiot.
CatsGodot on October 18, 2010 at 12:44 AM
I am definitely NOT her generation, but my kids are. My daughter, 18. isn’t so much into politics although she looks forward to her first national election. She’ll ask me who to vote for, which is fine. It gives me an opportunity to discuss the issues with her. My two sons, 17 and 24, however, watch the Fox shows every afternoon they can as well as read my Townhall magazine and read news articles online. They are both passionate conservatives and do their best to convert all of their non-conservative friends. They are not shy about it at all.
I would love to hear my 17-year-old debate baby McCain. He would win hands-down.
As an aside, I’m tired of the social conservatives trying to co-opt the Tea Party movement. The Tea Party is about fiscal conservative, limited government, Constitutional issues, period. If they want to start their own movement, have at it, but leave the Tea Party alone.
To me, a limited government butts out of my private life and leaves all issues except the ones stated in the Constitution up to the states. That includes gay marriage and the “war on drugs”.

Roger that. I have been going to Tea Partie’s since they began and I was not inspired by anyone’s position on abortion, gay marriage, drugs, or religion. I went because the federal government is out of control, overbloated, spending us into a black hole and so stupidly corrupt it has become absurd, almost funny, but also terrifying.
I went because the past four years have rekindled in me a fire for our basic principles as Americans, and by that I mean our principles of LIMITED GOVERNMENT, not social principles.
I don’t want to bash anyone for being a social con, I am mixed on the issues that make a classic social con, and I’m mad at hell at this country’s tolerance for extreme Christian bashing and extreme Muslim coddling . .
but ultimately, the Tea Party is about government waste and the over expansion and intrusion of the federal government into areas it should stay the F out of – priviate lives and states’ rights.
Everything else is a boxcar jumping engine that is the Tea Party train.

Megan McCain is painful to watch. Her friends and her feel this way? What, her millionaire friends? Megan, go get a real job you idiot. My siblings are in their early-mid 20′s and think she’s a porky buffoon, not a voice for them.
Anyone catch that last part about the Tea Party being against big corporations and the Chamber of Commerce should be afraid of getting turned on? WTH? When has the Tea Party said anything against companies? In fact, I thought we were demonized because we DID support the Feds backing off those who provide jobs i.e. companies. The left is just making stuff up at this point…incoherence is a virtue to them.
How George Will can sit there without his blood pressure going up is an act worthy of political sainthood. And I still detest that creature Amanpour. I won’t forget her from her CNN Int’l anti-American days….

shorebird on October 18, 2010 at 3:45 AM
The Tea Parties have tons of social conservatives in them. If you haven’t detected any, maybe it’s because they’re not really trying to co-opt the tea party movement?
But if you really want to get somewhere on fiscal issues, it would be wise to at least learn to appreciate political allies, even if they’re more socially conservative than you are.
There Goes The Neighborhood on October 18, 2010 at 3:50 AM
I agree and was having the same thoughts…
A libertarian/Leftwinger here commented that “no one likes to be lectured” in reference to this “young people” or MeggieMac’s “friends” she claims to represent in relationship (or not in one) with the Tea Party perhaps becoming more outspoken on “values” issues.
Which makes no sense on all fronts. That “college/youth” people audience exists in a world of being-lectured-to and makes decided choice to remain in it as long as possible (parents, schools, dependencies upon others).
And I still find it unbelievable that MeggieMac represents this “youth vote” or the college Republican age vote. I think she’s a turn-off to most people, youth included.
Lourdes on October 18, 2010 at 4:20 AM
First paragraph: I laughed aloud in agreement with it.
I’m finding it unbelievable that Ms. McCain has some big bus of “friends” who are all GOP “youth” who think as she does. It’s just not a plausible position in that regard that she continues to make, as if she’s an elected president of that mysteriously unidentified (and unidentifiable) bus.
Second paragraph: Again, I agree…the Left is flailing around desperately trying to find some sticking point in the Tea Party to lob their icky hatred of the Right. They can’t find that point so they’re just continuing to make anything up.
The Chamber complaints and finance is beyond hypocritical by the Left, what with Barry Obama’s mysteriously non-recorded and quite private but massive donations from Anywhere In The World. Axelrod was just hyperventilating about the Left’s preposterous claims at “finance transparency” on a Sunday news show — EVERYthing he claims he/Democrats “represent,” he and they have already abundantly proven they don’t. Hopefully, there will come a day when Obama’s campaign donations will be identified, all of them. But not holding my breath.
Reference: (scroll, see: “CNN, STATE OF THE UNION” paragraphs).

The only reason this twit has any press is due to the fact that she likes to denigrate and run down conservatives and the MSM/Left like that and give her notice.
She should be thought of as a lefty/lib in moderate clothing, oh I forgot, moderates now days are lefties in conservative clothing. She’s a lot like her father, in that she wants to be thought of as a voice of reason when its a voice of concession of the right to the left.
She is only given credence by the left and the right should ignore her, she is a lot of hot gas.

Everything those nasty people were saying was offensive but allah didn’t hear that because he considers himself one of them. They were talking about us like we are a science project gone bad. He loves West, as we all should since he’s an actual American hero, and when he pulled up to the next light he looked over and it was West driving himself around. He was up here for an appearance with Rubio and had driven his own car up from south Florida.

The democrats have been even more despicable in thier behavior due to thier desperation than ever. I just hope that those sleepwalkers out there who don’t think about elections until the week before and then vote based on bumper stickers and tv ads have been alert. I’m betting that the majority of these elections where democrat incumbents are running neck and neck with thier opponents will be a mess after the election. The democrats already have seiu thugs running around nevada causing trouble and acorn may have gone underground but they are still around. The democrats just need to keep the elections close and then they will steal them with lawyers. franken didn’t win, grogoire in washington state didn’t win and in all likelihood the two Bush elections weren’t really that close. I bet there will be 10 or more elections contested well into the new year.

I hope you are wrong, I hate when the results drag on and on. drewas on October 18, 2010 at 10:40 AM
What’s stunning is Meghan’s naivety. That horrible shot of her from the side and rear, exposing the runnels of fat, said it all. And was the white suit her idea? Has anyone seen a shot of the War Slut’s butt? I think not. It was deliberate and calculated.
What is the Daily Beast feeding her, McRibs?
It’s not a matter of what she says anymore — her shelf life as a Sarah Palin thorn is past. It’s now visual. It’s “Look, younger generation, here’s a Republican, fat, stupid and vapid. And get this, she claims to speak for you. Eeeew.” If she ever decided to join the Democrat Party, they’d drop her into the deepest hole they could find.
Aardvark on October 18, 2010 at 10:53 AM
Meghan is very young. She views every woman as herself, and she’s going to worry accordingly.
Maturity will show her that’s a false paradigm, but she’s not there yet.
AnninCA on October 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM
Goodness, no. I disagree. The only difference between her and me at that age is that she’s in the public eye.
Chelsea Clinton is quite unusual. She learned, I suppose, how to truly not get into that position. And the Bush girls got into trouble, but they, too, know how to avoid the sandtraps.
Meghan is simply growing up in public. That’s awkward!
AnninCA on October 18, 2010 at 11:02 AM
Awwwwww……you guys are too tough on her.
She’s just very much a 20′s something. My son’s political thinking really was tough on my tongue at her age. I had to bite it often.
AnninCA on October 18, 2010 at 11:03 AM
Having watched the video, I am not sure having Ms. McCain on the roundtable added anything of substance to the discussion, other than to get a ratings spike.
George Will kind of gets it. The rest of the group certainly does not. Once enough of them get elected into positions of power at the Federal level, and actually starts to legislate on what they ran on, will the rest of the country finally get it. Such scrutiny is welcomed, but on the same token, those who worship and support Big Government will not like the outcome.

On behalf of my generation–which includes MeggieMac–I apologize to everyone who had to listen to her dribble. I am sincerely, sincerely sorry. In fact, to use her own “form of credentials”, she’s a turn-off to people of my generation–her generation–and we all think she should STFU.

Any view you have of Meghan’s looks. I agree, but she is still the best looking one there. Christine Amonpour has no beauty, intellect, or ratings whatsoever. Nothing to offer but a superior accent. Who wants to watch her show on a perfectly good day of the week?

Jet, the two are related. She gets interest because she’s the Republican taking on Republicans. It’s a tried and true method for success. You know this. I’d like her a ton better if she just had some self awareness. Talking about O’Donnell’s lack of experience and entitlement? Come on.
It is good for her, but I’m not sure who else it’s good for. I’m no longer convinced she’s doing anything for libs either.
I get your point on some candidates, but they had good success rates too. Regardless, it is true that they’re pushing the GOP to financial responsibility, and if that’s the only thing they’ve successfully done, then I’d argue the negative is completely outweighed by the positives.

She’s a pawn for the media to hide actual conservative philosophy from the youth for which progressives have no coherent rebuttal. The producers know they can rely on McCain.
Where was all her passion and contempt for the latest two Supreme Court Justices?
Contrast her lack of passionate contempt for the lifetime appointments of self-confessed progressive judicial activists, with the potential 6 year term of a Constitutional conservative. One the one hand you have the systemic unaccountability of judicial review, and she doesn’t bat an eyelash with Sotomayor and Kagan. On the other hand, you have the inherent accountability of an elected legislative position, and she’s ready to burn her bra to prevent the movement to contain extra-consitutional Federal power.
Amanpour thinks putting Meg McCain in the same room as George Will is a political strategy that puts distance between youth and conservatives. She is a fool, and I hope she does more of this. The actual results of her foolishness is to help define the clear contrasts of the great argument going on this nation that has absolutely nothing to do with age. Keep it up Christianne. I’m laughing at your self deception.

You may learn you’re in a minority. Good for you, but as time goes on, you learn. I spent way too much time in life wondering why I was in the minority, only to realize later that it was a simple case of maturing earlier on some issues than others. They caught up.
She’s very young. She is allowed her perspective. And, unwise as it is? She’s trying to break into public life before she’s really done anything but be the kid of a politician.
She doesn’t even know that’s not really any credential.
And I gave Christine A. a chance, but honestly, this is too much.
She and others are using Meghan.
It’s not right.

So that’s not the Michelin Man sitting there with his back to us … who knew?
I think George Will needs to take stock of his career so that he would recognize that This Week needs him more than he needs This Week. If he’d recognize that, I’d look forward to him stating on air that “not one voter in 10,000 gives a rip what we say here, so this is a pointless exercise is self-aggrandizement and preaching to the converted … I bid you adieu.”

Oh, this assemblage is far beyond odious. These pathetic people — even George Will pandering to the libs and the airhead McCain offspring — are so-o-o-o-o tedious and so-o-o-o out of touch with anything out here in the real world it is nauseating.
Is it just me or does Amanpour appear like one of those longshoremen who is now living out life as a failed post-op transsexual?

Why is anybody listening to Meghan McCain on anything?? And who is she to stand in judgment of someone being “qualified” to run for office — she hasn’t done a damn thing except be a a celebrity politician’s kid. She’s like the Paris Hilton of politics. Honestly, she’s good for nothing but boring, trite and meaningless observations.

Don’t feel too sorry for Meghan. She is a big girl and she knows what she is doing. Had Mitt Romney or Tim Pawlenty been her dad’s running mate, there would be zero interest in what she says or thinks.
It’s a two-way street. Christine A. uses Meghan and Meghan uses the media.

Lol, I honestly want to know, HAS ANYONE RUN OR TALKED TO AN ACTUAL MEGAN MCCAIN FAN? Where are these people, I have yet to meet one or actually see one. Where are these young slutty tattoo wearing worshipers of this self deluded moron.
Africanus on October 18, 2010 at 4:59 PM
I’m not sure they would either be young or slutty, but by the way she constantly refers to them, one would imagine that her posse would be in close tow.

Ms McCain strikes me as incredibly disconnected from any sort of reality. In fact, the only one of the panelists that really strikes me as an adult is George Will.
So many of the youth today simply don’t get their news from traditional sources. The lame stream media is no longer in the position to pick and choose the message and candidate. The youth may not have a lot of worldly experience, but I’m betting they understand what “I’m from the Government, and we need more money” means to their future.
How myopic do you have to be to say that this congress has provided predictability and the Tea party represents uncertainty? Wasn’t this the congressional body that refused to address the extension of the Bush tax cuts? Talk about kicking the can down the street. If this is telegraphing confidence and predictability, I’ll eat my hat.
hoakie on October 18, 2010 at 10:49 PM
Meg probably has a trust fund that kicks in when she is 30, so I think the party is stuck with her until then. After that she can go romp around with Paris HIlton and the other bimbos out there that are famous for being the daughters of the evil rich.

I am not so sure what is more disgusting about Meghan McCain. After having a very gifted life to end up so stupid and obese is a joke.
volsense on October 19, 2010 at 9:18 AM
John McCain’s daughter needs a brain transplant from his running mate.
MegMac is extremely naive, but she is old enough to run for the House. How ’bout a little on-the-job training in politics–let her run in the GOP primary for a House seat somewhere, THEN she can share her political wisdom with us (probably after getting her clock cleaned!). In the meantime, she has the right (duty?) to remain silent.
