Oh my: Fiorina now within one point of Boxer in new Reuters poll

posted at 6:41 pm on October 15, 2010 by Allahpundit

What an odd race. Things tightened up in early September, then Boxer bounced out to a six-to-eight point lead, which made this ol’ eeyore’s fragile little heart think she was pulling away. But no: The three polls taken this month have had the race by three or four points, and now suddenly via Reuters we’ve got a virtual dead heat.

If memory serves, Fiorina ended up pulling away in the last few weeks of the GOP primary thanks to a statewide ad bombardment. Boxer’s actually outspent her on TV two-to-one thus far, but I can’t believe that’ll continue when Fiorina’s budget for the race is basically infinite.

Democratic candidates are clinging to narrow leads over their Republican rivals in two key California races with less than three weeks to go until November 2 elections, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found on Friday.

Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer’s lead over Republican Carly Fiorina among likely voters in California is only one point, 46 percent to 45 percent, down from a four-point advantage early this month…

Ipsos pollster Cliff Young said the latest poll, coupled with a similar survey earlier this month, shows the races are showing stability. “California is trending Democratic although the races are close,” he said.

Whitman trails Brown by four in the same poll. The one skeptical caveat here: As with the O’Donnell poll earlier today, the sample in this one is a bit smaller and the margin of error thus greater than those of other recent polls showing Boxer up by three or four points. Fiorina could be benefiting from that.

For your amusement, via Greg Hengler, here’s Boxer chatting about the stimulus with Wolf Blitzer a few days ago and quite clearly having zero idea what she’s talking about. It doesn’t quite reach the level of “who’s on first?”, but that’s only because Blitzer finally takes pity on her and sets her straight. Estimated time before this vid appears in a Fiorina attack ad: Two days.

As with the Angle-Reid race if Fiorina wins it will not be by more than 2 points. Having said that could anybody had done any better than Fiorina in a state where the Dems severely outnumber the Republicans? I don’t think so.

I hope that those who condemned the Palin endorsement of Fiorina in May have had second thoughts and realize now how important it was to at least giving Boxer all she can handle, and finally decide to get behind Carly and vote for her and not sit home and sulk on November 2nd because Devore did not get the nomination.

Don’t put your trust in the polls entirely, they lean heavily to the highest bidder until the last week when they try to salvage their reputation. Ca. is a bit time union infested state at this point in her history, as most defense companies have moved (forced) out. Teachers union, public union, the doc union; jeez that state is infested… However, even these brainwashed union workers don’t like being broke.

NTWR on October 15, 2010 at 7:25 PM

I read she’s been doing light advertising the last month or so, but is going back up this week hard and often, making a push through election day. Which seems like a pretty good strategy. Boxer hit her with everything she had, and couldn’t open up a big lead, and now Carly’s coming back. While you don’t want to peak too late, you also don’t want to peak too early. Rossi did much the same thing and his polls have moved back in the right direction too.

Pat Caddell seems to think that Whitman could have used a better strategy than saturating the airwaves for months. He thinks the combo of too many ads has made people tune her out and/or get tired of her.

CCRWM on October 15, 2010 at 8:51 PM

I know I am a broken record about voter fraud in California…Carly needs a respectable lead or the Dems will most definitely steal this election with absentee ballots.

I lived there for 35 years, served twice as a precinct leader, and know how easily anyone could have registered any of their pets as voters…and all, human and canine, could vote absentee. Honest, the process is an open invitation to fraud.

There are huge registration loopholes, no requirement for voter ID, and the voter lists are only rarely updated.

If Carly can’t get at least 6 clean percentage points ahead of Boxer, the Dems can easily fraudulently steal a win from her.

marybel on October 15, 2010 at 8:56 PM

I heard from some Golden State political insiders last night that Boxer and Brown are both playing it really stupid right now, spending little or no time with constituencies they think are “safe” like Latino businessmen and Jewish groups. Fiorina and Whitman, meanwhile, are out rubber-chickening among these and other folks every night.

If you go by the yard signs in my part of California (Riverside County), Whitman and Fiorina will win in a pair of landslides. My impression is that the middle-class barely-hanging-on, upside-down mortgaged, and newly unemployed are going to go for the two GOP candidates virtually 100%.

Fiorina: “Boxer doesn’t know anything about job creation…how to create a job.”

Boxer: “I cut trillions of dollars of taxes. And I got elected.”

(Not actual quotes — paraphrased statements from video quotes.)

Fiorina wins that argument. AND she got Boxer to admit that she does not know anything about job creation, or about how to create a job, except that she is, indeed, a career politician who “managed to get elected.”

It’s really hard to understand how someone as nitwitty as Boxer has ever been elected to the Senate. Boxer is competition with Charlie Crist for MOST ABSURDLY VAIN FOOL EVAH.

technopeasant on October 16, 2010 at 3:19 AM

Likely (my guess here) it is that the illegal alien vote and associated (service workers union members, teachers, other unions) got mad at Whitman for NOT KEEPING the maid AFTER she was discovered to be an illegal alien. Likely their preference is that the illegal alien made “deserved” to be kept on in her job and paid a higher wage than her $23/hr. salary, and that Whitman “should have” paid for an attorney to “get her papers”…

Brown pretty much criticised Whitman for NOT doing that, and, in fact, I think that’s his idea of the law as an Attorney General, to not enforce it and to violate it as a good thing.

If voters elect Brown to the Governor’s office, CA should never ever get a penny or tear of support from the nation. It’s a horrifying idea that they might, but if they do, well, there’s just no excuse for self-destructive behavior like that, no sense in rewarding it. Brown is corrupt and senseless as they come and in CA, that’s saying a lot.
