Matthews to AFL-CIO chief: If those Chilean miners were tea partiers, they’d be dead

posted at 8:13 pm on October 13, 2010 by Allahpundit

Via the ‘Busters, this is one of those clips that’s so immensely stupid, it’s actually confounding. Where to begin? Is he suggesting that tea partiers are so committed to the “every man for himself” ethos of individualism that they oppose on principle any form of mutually beneficial cooperation — especially between desperate miners or, say, U.S. troops trapped in a survival situation? Does he not get that the reason most conservatives want less government is because they believe that people’s lives will improve that way — i.e. that liberty is a means to the end of maximizing welfare, which sort of cuts against the “tea-party miners killing each other” scenario? Does he at least understand that small government does allow for some government, and that fiscal conservatism fully allows for charity for people in need — like, say, a few dozen men trapped in a hole half a mile down? What the hell is he talking about here?

The punchline: Given his past rhetoric about scabs, if there’s anyone you wouldn’t want to be trapped in a mine with, it’s Richard Trumka. Refuse to play by his rules and you might just get your head cracked open. As a corrective to this insanity, read this new op-ed from Daniel Henninger at the Journal. Exit quotation: “The rescue of the Chilean miners is a smashing victory for free-market capitalism.”

pilamaye on October 13, 2010 at 8:20 PM

Anyone want to take a bet that the drilling machine that was supplied to the mine was supplied free of charge from the manufacturer, that it was the newest and best they could build, and that the men running it were the best in the world to run that machine? ….and it cut that hole more than two months sooner that first estimate.

So who is more responsible for the rescue, the President of Chile who (almost certainly) went to every expert on the planet, offering to pay any price to get any piece of equipment from anyone anywhere that would get those men back to the surface?

Chrissy probably doesn’t know that Chile is one of the most free-market-oriented countries in South America, and that Americans are well liked there. Compare the Chilean response to their recent massive earthquake to that of most countries.

I wonder if the trapped miners happened to notice Chrissy’s credibility rating under a rock down there, or would they have had to drill deeper?

Capitalism Saves Chilean Miners

“Well at the risk of being too confrontational for people, I would be willing to call this an enormous victory for free-market capitalism,” Daniel Henninger told James Freeman and the Opinion Journal.

From the drill bit and fiber-optic cables which were made in Pennsylvania and Japan, respectively, to projectors used on Samsung cell phones from Korea, Henninger praises the incredibly “vibrant” Chilean economy for opening up to the possibility of such miracles. “It all came together out there in that desert to bring these men up from half mile down.”

“A lot of this innovation came out of Chile right? And it’s the Chileans themselves who have to claim the victory here,” Henninger said.

Americas columnist Mary Anastasia O’Grady meanwhile, made note of the response, background and leadership of Chilean president Sebastian Piñera, as compared to Barack Obama.

O’Grady stated “What you have in Chile is a president who was once an executive at a very large corporation. He knows how to take charge — and he knows how to execute.”

“Remember we had this huge foreign ship that was being offered that had the incredible capacity to sweep up oil,” Henninger reminded. “The Dutch especially are apparently the world’s leaders in cleaning up oil spills — they too were pushed away by the Obama government.”

As Henninger reminds the Opinion Journal, the rescue miracle, and “victory,” would never have been possible in neighboring states such as Venezuela, Bolivia or Ecuador – where virtually all that thrives is big government.

Utterly repellent people. And it never occurs to them that their nonstop screeching hatred turns voters off.

Allah, my guess is that he’s getting at that Tea Partiers want less government and because of that there would no government regulation of mining or safety standards and as a result of THAT, they would have dies.

Keep in mind, I’m just guessing. His logic could be my byzantine than that.

No, fiscal conservatism requires charity. It depends on the charity of good-willed individuals and religious and civic institutions, rather than government coercion, to help out those who are truly in need.

Matthews, and apparently Allahpundit, should have paid more attention to what was said at the 8/28 rally.

From Allahpundit’s post

As a corrective to this insanity, read this new op-ed from Daniel Henninger at the Journal.

Also, from Michelle Malkin, with lots of images and commentary.

10:01 AM EST In a different day and age, Jeff Hart would be the most famous American in our country right now. He would be honored at the White House. Schoolchildren would learn of his skill and heroism. But because Jeff Hart works in an industry under fire by the Obama administration, more people in Chile will celebrate this symbol of American greatness than in America itself.

Jeff Hart is a driller based in my home state of Colorado. The father of two has been drilling water wells in Afghanistan at U.S. Army bases. When the San Jose Mine in Chile collapsed in August, he flew to lend his renowned expertise to the rescue effort. As part of an amazing three-way race to the trapped miners, Hart drilled for 33 days straight and was first to reach the caved-in workers. The AP recounts the story — and what strikes me again and again is how the world turned to American ingenuity and American fortitude and American equipment and American enterprise to get the job done:

Webler on October 13, 2010 at 9:37 PM

So if I understand Mr. Henninger, we seem to come closer to the “we are the world” goal as capitalists. Funny how that works, when people are allowed to profit from their own innovation and hard wark.

Cindy Munford on October 13, 2010 at 9:40 PM

This shows how liberal he is and how little he understand not just about conservatism, but his very own liberalism. It is liberals who believe in Eugenics and cutting out the weak when necessary for the supposed benefit of the greater good. It is conservatives, particularly religous conservatives, who believe in not just individualism but self sacrifice when needed.

The majority of the men and women in our military hold conservative values, they are more than willing to sacrifice themselves when in a foxhole, which is just as mentally stressful as that mine.
