Gloves off: Vets hammer Blumenthal for Vietnam lies in new McMahon ad

posted at 8:56 pm on October 12, 2010 by Allahpundit

A week ago, she trailed by 10 points; today she trails by six and is smelling blood. This isn’t the first ‘Nam-themed spot she’s tried, actually, but it’s one thing to damn him with his own words and another to bring in a jury of his peers. Is there any more damaging attack ad in American politics than having a group of vets accuse someone of stolen valor? Ask John Kerry, I guess.

As a special bonus, below you’ll find a new one from the NRSC going after Joe “The Rifleman” Manchin, who’s suddenly back in the lead in West Virginia. Or at least, that’s what PPP would have you believe: As Jay Cost notes, their turnout model for Democrats is ridiculous. All you need to know about this ad is that, at present in WV, “Obama” is a curse word on the order of the F-bomb. As such, this spot is even more brutal than McMahon’s.

Absolutely brutal. On both counts.

McMahon has a good chance. She’s worthy of financial backing, IMHO. Same thing with John Raese.

Why on earth would any politician in this day and age make a claim for service in Vietnam when it is so easily checked?

They got away with it for decades and decades and old habits are hard to break.

TheBigOldDog on October 12, 2010 at 9:14 PM

To Sharrukin – I’m sure Blumenthal thought, by saying that, he could ingratiate himself to veterans groups. Who would check? His time in the service would match-up with the war so, why not. After he first said it, and said it again and again, he probably figured he got away with it. Actually, I’d love to know who checked since this appeared in the NY Times, not the organization you’d usually associate with a Republican campaign. If he were a Republican, he would have quit already.

As far as Mancin is concerned, if he loses it could be a real message to the Democrats and Obama. We’ll see. This Administration is doing some really dumb things so there’s always a chance that, when America sends them a message, they won’t get it.

Because he doesn’t know a lie from the truth.

In other words, he’s crazy.

Blumie thought he could get away with it because the press has always covered for these tools and Lord knows how often he has gotten away with lying before. He is an arrogant SOB that has gotten away with it before so why not again. They all have no clue as to what the attitude of the “little people” has become and it is not pretty.

sharrukin on October 12, 2010 at 9:03 PM

The Democrats have gotten away with this stuff for ages. They correctly assume that the average American idiot Democrat voter will believe whatever they say. Remember, O’bama set a new US record in 2008 by winning 70% of the high school dropout vote.

Remember Democrat Vietnam “War Hero” Max Cleland? He lost several limbs in Vietnam, and was elevated to sainthood by the Dems when he got into politics. But as it turned out he sustained his injuries by accidentally setting off his own hand grenade as he was flying someplace in a helicopter.

Max’s military service is to be honored and not to be questioned, but the Democrats later basically used him and cynically inflated his resume. I’m sure many Democrats still sincerely believe he got his horrible injuries in combat.

But hey, their “candidate” for President in 2004 later did the same thing, so why should they care?

She’s ran a multi-billion dollar successful company. When she gets up and debates a bill on taxes, etc – she knows what she’s talking about. More than Blumie ever would.

As for the Vikes – I actually think if Farvegate doesn’t distract them – they might actually turn this around. They are only 1-3 so the season is not lost. I don’t mind Moss – I think he’s kinda funny actually.

gophergirl on October 12, 2010 at 9:37 PM

The point should be, if Blumenthal is comfortable with lieing about his service, what else is he willing to lie about to the people of this nation.

The lie is easy to get away with when you are a staffer or some low-level grunt. It goes on the resume. The resume goes in a file and can live forever. He may have even started the lie pre-internet. Eventually they get to a level where someone actually checks the claimed history, and it all falls apart. It happens outside of politics too.

Once again, this McMahon ad is brutal. Say hello to your new Senator!

CliffHanger on October 12, 2010 at 10:16 PM

FOX News has designated Joe Manchin as their dimcorat to support to show that they are not biased to the GOP. They ran spots and interviews dealing positively with Manchin in 8 of their programs including Bill O. Not one time did they mention John Raese by name or intimation.

They ran the so called story in regards the casting call ad five times on Special Report as if it was the second coming of 9/11.

FOX News is killing John Raese and the GOP’s attempts to take control of the Senate.

Jdripper on October 12, 2010 at 10:21 PM

Two knockout ads.

AshleyTKing on October 12, 2010 at 10:22 PM

I think most Vietnam vets, like me, can’t understand why somebody would lie about having served in Vietnam. I didn’t volunteer. I was sent. I spent most of my life feeling like I was SUPPOSED to feel ashamed of my service, although I never was. I was always proud of my unit and the men I served with

Still, my service was just a fact of life, in my life. i am completely befuddled how a politician can be so low, that he would lie about it.

Manchin is tryin to walk a tightrope between his state and his national party positions, and its tough. However, Blumenthal is a lying scumbag that violated, several times, the honor of men and women who served in Vietnam. This is the political equivalent of rape–it’s a crime of power. It’s using the power of the act to gain more power over people and it is utterly sickening. It is a moral violation, not a physical violation, but a violation nonetheless.

Blumenthal deserves far more than an election day defeat with regards to his statements on Vietnam service.

Their sacrifice built pillars on the foundation of freedom. Your sacrifice extends those pillars to the sky for the whole world to see. All active duty and vets (even those of us who never fired a shot in anger?) deserve the thanks of a grateful nation. They especially deserve a civilian leadership better and more competent than the one they now have.

Extrafishy on October 13, 2010 at 8:51 AM

Love you, vets. Thank you, vets. Blumenthal should be embarrassed… but he should lose BECAUSE HE’S A SOCIALIST not because he said he was in Vietnam.

Let’s give the people a clear choice. Sorry, but the people of CT already know he lied at Vietnam, now they need to understand what he will help facilitate if elected… the demise of the US economy.

His service during the war is not going to come up much during his time in the Senate but the ECONOMIC FUTURE of the US will.

Why on earth would any politician in this day and age make a claim for service in Vietnam when it is so easily checked?

sharrukin on October 12, 2010 at 9:03 PM

I agree with batterup on October 12, 2010 at 9:17 PM.

Because Blumenthal is a natural born liar (with one little slip back in 2002, cited below) regarding the issue of his service!

On December 1, 1970, just like everyone else who was concerned about being drafted at the time, Blumenthal KNEW that his date of birth — February 13, 1946 — had been drawn as a low Draft Lottery Number – “152″ — and he knew that he would soon be drafted! For the year 1970, all those having numbers “195″ or LOWER were subject to the immediate draft. Blumenthal definitely knew his luck had run out.

He also knew that if he was drafted, there was a significant likelihood that he would be sent to Viet-Nam.

Back in the late 60s, nearly everyone who was subject to potentially being drafted knew the precise details of their draft status. And that was particularly true for those who had sought and received any kind of deferment, as Blumenthal definitely had.

Plus, Blumenthal was working in the Nixon White House at teh time, and he also worked for the Washington Post back then! Are you kidding me? He knew precisely where he stood when those lottery numbers were drawn.

Therefore, knowing that he would be drafted, most likely sometime in early 1970, Blumenthal joined a Marine reserve unit, one that was passing out Toys for Tots in Washington, DC! They were derisively called the “T-Street” unit.

So . . . okay, he served (unlike Clinton who drew a high draft number).

But who would deny that he joined that reserve unit to avoid being drafted and sent to Viet-Nam?

Certainly NOT him!

In a very brief moment of candor, he also specifically told the AP back in 2002 that he had enlisted in the Marine Reserve because he knew he was going to be drafted:

“He said he enlisted because he had a ‘pretty low draft number.’”

Like Bill Clinton, therefore, Blumenthal apparently thought it was perfectly okay for someone else to go to Viet-Nam in his place.

But unlike Bill Clinton, Blumenthal decided at some point that it was also perfectly okay to tell people, on several occasions, that he had actually served proudly in Viet-Nam!

Like I said, Blumenthal is a natural born liar. He richly deserved getting called out on it by these vets.

And the last thing anyone with any sense should do, is vote for somebody who they know is a natural born liar!

Trochilus on October 13, 2010 at 4:33 PM

mankai on October 13, 2010 at 8:53 AM

Sorry, but I have to disagree . . . not with your assertion that he will help promote an agenda that will further undermine the American economy — he likely will — but with your claim that “he should lose BECAUSE HE’S A SOCIALIST not because he said he was in Vietnam.”

As I noted above, Richard Blumenthal is a natural born liar, the best proof of which is that he repeatedly lied to people by claiming that he served in Viet-Nam when he did not.

That is as clear an indicator of a person’s basic character, as any I know. It is an excellent reason to never vote for such a person.

Never.

Both are good reasons not to vote for him, but the fact that we know he has and will repeatedly lie to the American public, is the strongest reason.
