Video: The “Jaws” Giorango Debate

posted at 12:55 pm on October 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Mark Kirk and Alexi Giannoulias held their first debate yesterday on Meet the Press, and from the reaction on Morning Joe today, the Democratic nominee created more questions about his ties to mob figures than he provided answers. When Kirk hit Giannoulias on the loans to people like Michael “Jaws” Giorango, who not only had rap sheets with felony convictions but also had been extensively covered by the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times, Giannoulias couldn’t give a good answer as to why his family’s Broadway Bank authorized millions in loans to them when Giannoulias himself was the senior loan officer of the bank.  The best Giannoulias could do was to claim that he didn’t know the “extent” of the criminal activities of the loan recipients, hardly a denial:

These were hardly low-profile loan requests.  Republicans are passing around a list of loans approved by Broadway, with special notes for those loans approved during Giannoulias’ tenure as senior loan officer, that show tens of millions of dollars flowing out from Broadway to these mob figures, including Giorango:

Total Broadway Bank Loans to Criminals: $119,499,045

Total Alexi Giannoulias Loans to Criminals: $80,037,045

Michael Giorango

Name Amount Date

Michael Giorango                                           $1,100,000.00 8/27/1999

Michael Giorango                                           $900,000.00 9/24/1999

Michael Giorango                                           $300,000.00 12/5/2000

2601 Associates                                              $5,000,000.00 5/31/2001

Michael Giorango                                           $6,000,000.00 11/2/2001

Michael Giorango                                           $600,000.00 5/28/2002

2601 Associates                                              $400,000.00 9/19/2002

1201 S Western LLC                                      $1,360,000.00 9/1/2004

1201 S Western LLC                                      $4,400,000.00 12/21/2004

1201 S Western LLC                                      $6,120,000.00 12/31/2004

Sun & Ocean Properties                                  $5,800,000.00             3/31/2005

2601 Associates                                              $1,000,000.00 4/20/2005

Highland Park Real Estate Dev. Corp            $3,600,000.00             7/1/2005

1201 S Western LLC                                      $3,400,000.00 9/26/2005

Broadway Bank Total: $39,980,000

Alexi Giannoulias Total: $26,080,000

The best case that this demonstrates is that Alexi Giannoulias is a total incompetent, a conclusion that certainly follows from the failure of Broadway and the nine-figure federal rescue necessary when the FDIC seized it earlier this year.  Claiming that he didn’t know the “extent” of criminal activity while supervising tens of millions in loans makes this appear as something a little more problematic than just incompetence.  Giannoulias doesn’t belong anywhere near the US Senate, especially since he obviously has no real answers for the questions surrounding Broadway’s failures and the business that Giannoulias did while working there.

He should have apologized and said it was a “boneheaded move”.

Agreed, he doesn’t belong anywhere near the US Senate, but that can be said about a good many of the occupants already there. I would love to see him go down, but this is Chicago…

Still no curiosity on O’s connections, either.
C’mon, there HAS to be some.Really.

Alexi Giannoulias may not be senate material, but I can think of another Federal Institution where he would fit in well. It’s called SuperMax. Perhaps his senate run is a way to stave off indictment.

Tommy_G on October 11, 2010 at 1:04 PM

In Chicago making these loans should get him a 5% bump in the polls.

I would like to think that even in Illinois we would draw the line somewhere. Whatever Kirk’s weaknesses are (and I admit he has them), how can this race even be close? Can’t we “just say no” to an out and out mob banker?

jwolf on October 11, 2010 at 1:12 PM

You obviously haven’t studied the composition of the U.S. Senate recently.

When I was a young boy, I referred to the whole state as Chicago. I was unknowingly prescient.

it amazes me that the left which is always screaming “Bankster!”, actually is running one for Obama’s old seat.

rob verdi on October 11, 2010 at 1:17 PM

None of this will matter. Alexi has a “D” behind his name and therefore will get 6 million votes…whethere they are real people or not.

He’s in the Outfit, Al!

This is like saying you knew your girlfriend was pregnant, but you didn’t know the extent of her pregnancy.

Please explain to me how a bank can loan $120 million to known criminals, cost taxpayers almost $400 million and the man responsible can run for the US Senate but Charles Keating was put in jail.

…………predictable.

Clearly he’s Democrat Presidential nominee material.

PappyD61 on October 11, 2010 at 1:33 PM

Is the Kirk campaign hitting this or are they pulling a “McCain” and being too polite to play hardball?

Extrafishy on October 11, 2010 at 1:33 PM

Clarification: I was referencing campaign ads, not debates that nobody watches.

Extrafishy on October 11, 2010 at 1:34 PM

Great News! He’ll only win by 6 points!

mankai on October 11, 2010 at 1:35 PM

Scarborough usually annoys me, but I saw part of this earlier today, and he didn’t mince words.

From what I’ve seen, Dems had a terrible Sunday show performance. Giannoulias seems to go up in flames on MTP. Axelrod got torpedoed by Bob Schieffer of all people. And on Fox, Rove got a chance to slam Obama and Dems in an uninterrupted rant and Wasserman-Schultz carried herself like a classless, shrill, despearate b**** when paired with Eric Cantor on Fox News Sunday.

BuckeyeSam on October 11, 2010 at 1:35 PM

Come on, now. Realistically? If a Chicago mobster strolls into your bank and asks for a loan, would you turn him down?

“Are you tawkin’ to me! Are you sayin’ NO to ME!!”

OK, lame, but what else can he say?

iurockhead on October 11, 2010 at 1:37 PM

Giannoulias is truly his own worst enemy at this point.

Extrafishy on October 11, 2010 at 1:33 PM

The Mob Banker has been hit hard with it early on. He was hit so early, he has built up some immunity. This latest response should rev up more ads since they can use the stuff coming out his own mouth against him. His ads are total negative hit jobs on Kirk. He’s also being hit with losing 75 million for the early college savings plan while Treasurer to the Dem Mob as well. Won’t make a whole lot of difference. He’ll get the machine votes no matter what. If enough downstaters make it to the polls, Kirk will win, baggage and all.

Laddy on October 11, 2010 at 1:43 PM

Reaction from MSNBC folks? “Kind of an awkward moment. That is tough. Ooh, ouch.” Like their team just had a touchdown scored against them with a 15 yd unsportsmanlike penalty to boot.

jwolf on October 11, 2010 at 1:12 PM

Here is the very simple problem that conservatives have in this race, even if Ed just doesn’t want to talk about it: Kirk is a liberal. And not only is he a liberal, but he despises conservatives and views them as his political enemies. Kinda hard to embrace a guy that is running against your platform, no matter what letter is next to his name.

He will make Arlen Specter look like Jim DeMint.

Jaibones on October 11, 2010 at 1:57 PM

ted c on October 11, 2010 at 1:27 PM

Waaaaay too late for that, Ted. The “right thing” would have been to find, develop, and support a conservative for this Senate seat. We didn’t do that, so we ended up with the first entrenched RINO who announced for the seat, which the state and national RINOs immediately got behind with funding and logistics.

The primary had been moved up to early February, so no Tea Partiers had time to develop. It was over before it started. If the primary had been in August or September, Kirk would have gotten his ass kicked.

Jaibones on October 11, 2010 at 2:01 PM

So it’s ok to be just a little bit mafia?

Calling their guy basically being outed as enabling mobsters “awkward” shows how far MSNBC is in the tank for the Dems.

katiejane on October 11, 2010 at 2:11 PM

When Don Giannoulias said that he didn’t know the extent of criminal activity, he probably means ‘I didn’t know that they were any more criminal than any other Chicago democratic politician’.

it amazes me that the left which is always screaming “Bankster!”, actually is running one for Obama’s old seat.

rob verdi on October 11, 2010 at 1:17 PM

Of course! You can be the worst sort of financier in the opinion of the progressives, -a speculator, and an admitted Nazi stooge like George Soros, and as long as you are a democratic, you are a saint.

slickwillie2001 on October 11, 2010 at 2:21 PM

A lot of zombies will show up to vote for the defecrat by mail in ballot.

sdillard on October 11, 2010 at 1:18 PM

I really think it would be interesting to remove the D and R signifiers from the candidates’ names on the ballots. Make the voters do a little legwork.

I am going to hold my nose and vote for Kirk. I’m not sure who said it around here but I agree with the sentiment, “Surge then purge!”

Fallon on October 11, 2010 at 3:45 PM

Possibly so. But he’s still got my vote.

jwolf on October 11, 2010 at 3:02 PM

I despise Kirk with a passion…but I despise a Democrat led congress more.
When early voting starts tomorrow I’m going to be there bright and early…and one of the votes I cast will be for Mark Kirk.

Surprised Obama hasn’t made Giannoulias a Czar in his admin or a replacement for Timmy, the Treasury Sec.
