Video: The grimmest “Simpsons” title sequence ever
posted at 6:58 pm on October 11, 2010 by Allahpundit
To cleanse the palate, the media kerfuffle du jour. Seriously now — is this really that controversial? It’s shocking the first time you watch it simply because it’s so different in tone from the standard madcap opening sequence, but people are treating it as some sort of semi-serious indictment of Fox’s operations. It isn’t; if anything, it’s a goof on the most alarmist suspicions about those operations. Here’s a CNN video from a few years ago on how South Korean animators bring “The Simpsons” to life; as dungeons go, their set-up’s pretty sweet. And here’s Al Jean, one of show’s executive producers, trying to explain to the Times this afternoon that the dark humor here is, after all, still humor.
Q. Were you concerned that what he sent you could get the show into hot water?
A. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about it for a little bit. Certainly, Fox has been very gracious about us biting the hand that feeds us, but I showed it to Matt Groening, and he said, no, we should go for it and try to do it pretty much as close as we can to his original intention. So we did. Like we always do, every show is submitted to broadcast standards, and they had a couple of [changes] which I agreed with, for taste. But 95 percent of it is just the way he wanted…Q. Has Banksy’s criticism made you reconsider any of the ways you do things at “The Simpsons” in terms of producing the show or its merchandise?
A. I have to say, it’s very fanciful, far-fetched. None of the things he depicts are true. That statement should be self-evident, but I will emphatically state it.
Exit question: Why would Fox approve a goof this sinister at its own expense? Exit answer: When was the last time anyone had reason to talk about “The Simpsons”?

it says right in the intro to the Clip… “So Brash So Fox” Fox has frequently made fun of it’s-self or allowed shows to bash it on it’s own network.

The Simpsons practically invented the concept of meta. They’ve even made fun of their Korean animation before. I don’t understand why this is news.
Although, as a fan of the show since day one (yes, yes, it’s not nearly as funny as it was in 1994), it’s nice to see.
YYZ on October 11, 2010 at 7:05 PM
I see it as them making fun of all the people trying to make a big deal out of nothing.
ButterflyDragon on October 11, 2010 at 7:07 PM
I always watch The Simpsons, it’s usually hit or miss for me. Will continue watching it.
Reading about them making fun of Fox makes me remember the “Fox Satellite” – a rickety thing that creaked and was held up by three party balloons. Made ME laugh.
People say it’s not funny anymore. I disagree with moments like Lisa Simpson holding a meeting of the Springfield Democrats around her kitchen table and a very gay guy saying “Let’s get this meeting started, babies” and Arianna Huffington responding “I agree with my ex-husband…..”

Creates buzz, people are actually watching the show. That intro that’s being linked everywhere on the internet was the most Simpsons I’ve watched in… can’t even remember how long.

Anyone getting worked up over this needs a hobby or something. The Simpsons has always done things like this. That’s way they are still around.

It’s a test, AP. The producers just want to see if they can start a scandal about Fox’s use of child labor, body parts of endangered species, and mythical creatures being forced to work without proper PPE.
I don’t want to disappoint you, so I won’t tell you your grade.
applebutter on October 11, 2010 at 7:22 PM
I wonder what they edited out for ‘for taste’?
bitsy on October 11, 2010 at 7:22 PM
The people who are being mocked are treating it that way. This is a breath of fresh air, a shot at the political correctness, elitism and dishonesty of the leftwing media. Although I don’t think groening is conservative he certainly isn’t knee jerk liberal. The media took a shot at someone who was at worst, or best, nuetral, and they got it thrown right back in their faces. This sequence isn’t saying Fox is abusing unicorns, it’s saying how ridiculous and dishonest and over the top the left can be when they focus in on a target they want to damage. It makes fun of the leftwing media, who are really made up of intellectually weak scum who really wanted to be movie stars or stephan king. I think it’s awesome and a great sign that people are waking up and not afraid to fight back.

You should see what goes on in the department where they make all those fancy graphics for Fox News. And the slave like working conditions for the Fox News babes’ hairstylists! Oh the horror.

For the same reason it tolerates Seth MacFarland going after FOX News. It draws in a certain crowd and makes money.
Rupert Murdoch didn’t become successful by being MSNBC-like stupid.

Any other source for the video other than Hulu? Hulu won’t allow the video to be played in the Philippines.

The Simpsons bring back fond memories of the 90s and I consider the show to have gone off the air circa 2001. It’s better that way.
Though I chuckled at this opening.

Longtime Simps viewer checking in here.
First of all, I saw the entire show last night, including the opening, which was brilliant. I didn’t see it as a “dig at Fox”. What’s the big deal even if it was? After all, “The Simpsons” is on the Fox entertainment outlet. If it were only shown on Fox News Channel, that would be a different thing.
So far this season’s shows have been pretty good. Certainly above the quality of the past 4 or 5 years overall.
But remember, this show has been on the air for a damned long time. Kinda tought to keep thinking up new story lines! They still manage to pull it off.
And people have whined about its quality going downhill for a long time too. I used to chat with one of the producers via e-mail back in the late 1990s and he complained about the exact same thing then-all the smartass “critics” (my words, not his) who said such-and-such an animated series had left “The Simpsons” in its dust. The shows mentioned are all long gone, and his show is till there.

Fox has always let the lefty writers at the Simpsons mock the Republicans as evil men and as Fox as a propaganda network. That’s tolerance. Much more than I would allow. If I owned Fox, I would have axed anyone who used his Fox job to carry water for the MSM and parroting the far left meme that only unenlightened idiots would watch such a neanderthal right-wing network. In one episode, Lisa Simpson calls The Fountainhead “a bible for right-wing losers”.
Now, just imagine the politics of the writer who wrote that
line.
No need to wonder. Below is a list of all the dirty swipes at Fox, that the writers of the Simpsons have been allowed to take.

I’m trying to think…have I ever seen an entire Simpsons episode? I can’t say for sure that I have, but if I have, it was a long time ago. Put me in the “didn’t know it was still being broadcast” column.

They knew Banksy would push the limit when they hired him. This is just a PR move by them. Any press for a dying franchise is good press.

At the end of the intro, you can hear:
“This ad has been paid by the Democratic National Committee”.

Zuh?
I really don’t get all the Simpsons-hate. Still the best show on TV.
They actually do a fair job of not being too left-liberal. They mocked Michael Moore, ridiculed Clinton, and gave a third of an episode to The Fountainhead.
My favorite moment of conservative love?
[Bart and Lisa explain that they used Grampa's name on their script]
Bart Simpson: Didn’t you wonder why you were getting checks for doing absolutely nothing?
Grampa: I figured ’cause the Democrats were in power again.

I hate how The Simpsons now have to do a lame pop culture parody skit every 10 seconds. After Season 11 it did it more and more, and no, I don’t like Family Guy either.

Who cares? I mean really. I am amazed the silly show is still on the air.

I’ve studied Art and Art history for years. Most Modern Art is BS in my opinion. This Banksy guy is a hack and a vandal if you ask me. But if he’s political and iconoclastic that’s all that matters to art critics. He makes money though; I do respect that.
Dork B. on October 12, 2010 at 9:09 AM
The problem here is that it went too long, so instead of being funny, it was just awkward. Also, they went a little heavy on the rat jokes. Generally, though, you should always be open to criticism and self-deprecation–which Fox and Fox News are.
Ask yourself: Would NBC ever allow that degree of self-criticism? No freaking way.
Outlander on October 12, 2010 at 9:21 AM
A “dying franchise?” Are you kidding? The Simpsons pulled a 3.0 in the 18-49 demographic last week. There are shows (e.g., Fringe and Bones) airing on Fox during the week that don’t get anywhere near those ratings.
Seriously, the show has become something of an institution. I know people who grew up watching the Simpsons who now watch it with their kids.
Outlander on October 12, 2010 at 9:25 AM
As the only Korean reader of Hotair, I am greatly outraged by the insensitive portrayal of hard working Korean animators. They made us look Chinese. And one of the workers clearly look like Apollo Anton Ohno.
How would you like to experience some server crash from coordinated email bombs from South Korea, Simpsons creators? Feel the wrath of millions of people who get outraged over nothing!!!
