Obama’s attack on Chamber of Commerce backfiring

posted at 9:30 am on October 11, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

When the New York Times punctures a White House meme, it can reasonably be considered a flop.  Last week, Barack Obama himself accused the Chamber of Commerce of using foreign money to push its domestic political activism, which would violate election law.  Unfortunately, as the Times reports, the White House had absolutely no evidence of any wrongdoing.  And Obama failed to mention that plenty of groups on the Left, especially labor unions, raise money outside the US as well.

Now the White House is trying to step back from their earlier accusations of illegality, but they’re still desperately trying to hang onto the line of attack:

White House officials acknowledged Friday that they had no specific evidence to indicate that the chamber had used money from foreign entities to finance political attack ads.

“The president was not suggesting any illegality,” Bob Bauer, the White House counsel, said. Instead, he said Mr. Obama’s reference to the chamber was meant to draw attention to the inadequacies of campaign disclosure laws in allowing groups to spend large amounts of money on politics without disclosing their donors.

White House officials called on the chamber to go beyond current disclosure laws and establish that no foreign money has been used in its political campaigns. “They can put this to rest,” said Joshua Earnest, a White House spokesman. “They have the keys to the file cabinet.”

Is that how it works in the United States in the era of Hopenchange?  The President makes an accusation of lawbreaking without any evidence of it, and the entity accused has to prove their innocence?   In this country, the government has to prove its case, not the defendant, and even before making an accusation of wrongdoing usually has to have some evidence of the crime in the first place.

This kind of rhetoric is nothing short of McCarthyism.  The government makes baseless accusations and then blames the people accused for not clearing themselves.  Will Obama start appearing at rallies with his “little list” of an ever-changing number of foreign contributors?  The White House launched the same kind of baseless attacks on the Koch family and Americans for Prosperity this summer and have yet to offer one substantial piece of evidence that any of these groups or people have done anything wrong at all, except to oppose Obama’s policies.

This is an administration that apparently has never learned the difference between being a political campaign and serving in the government.  In the former situation, this would constitute slander, which is bad enough.  When it comes from the government, it’s a form of tyranny — an attempt to use the power of government to silence dissent.

This attack is because the Chamber of Commerce won’t agree to the global warming agenda. Read http://reut.rs/bxIR7a

debg on October 11, 2010 at 9:41 AM

So….. in his next appearance he will try (again) to convince the public that he is not “anti business?”

This attack illustrates how little he understands the country. The CoC’s are integral to every town and city across America. If you’re in business, or starting one, you belong to the CoC. To suggest that it is an organization that is corrupt (on a national level) and that it should be the subject of controversy is another slap in the face. BO doesn’t know when to stop.

If ever there was a text book example of alienating the voters one most needs to win and election, this guy is it.

Cody1991 on October 11, 2010 at 9:41 AM

This kind of rhetoric is nothing short of McCarthyism.

Please, show some respect…this is way beyond the “easy” analogy of McCarthyism…this is the president of the United States, this is more like “Chavezism” or “Pol Potism”, “Tungism”, “Minhism”, “Jongism”, “Stalinism”.
This is just one step from having people arrested, and detained until they prove themselves innocent.
Their idea is to remove people who have differing views from the public…no he isn’t “killing” them, he is killing their ideas, politically the same thing.
Just in days of old, without newspapers and free information, they could just kill and make the people disappear, in the U.S, they have to be more subtle, so they just falsely accuse and hope the papers “kill” their opponents.
But, with the internet, the collective won’t be so easy to manipulate.

right2bright on October 11, 2010 at 9:46 AM

The Obama White House, apparently not content with using the traditional big media outlets as the basis of their attacks, now is basing their attacks off postings at pro-left blogs like Think Progress, which is where this attack on the Chamber began.

You can question the story vetting in places like The New York Times, but in an echo chamber like Think Progress (or Kos, or the HuffPo), there’s virtually no vetting of the story angle when it comes to attacking the left’s perceived enemies (which is why the Tines itself blew down the allegations on Saturday).

That’s OK for a community organizer and his supporters in Chicago, but if this is how the Rahm-less White House plans to play out the next 2 1/2 years. But if the admiistration is actually going to rely on the liberal blogs as their prime source of news, they might actually have the big media going after them hard and heavy by 2012 (since the big media threw a hissy fit last year when the White House started letting blog reps ask questions at Obama’s press conferences, if they start thinking the president doesn’t like their news anymore and has fallen in love with the liberal blog world, you could see Robert Gibbs having to deal with jilted lover assaults over the next year).

Listen to what you’re saying Ed:

This is an administration that apparently has never learned the difference between being a political campaign and serving in the government. In the former situation, this would constitute slander, which is bad enough. When it comes from the government, it’s a form of tyranny — an attempt to use the power of government to silence dissent.

If this is true – and I believe it is – then our nation is in a state of emergency, under siege by a hostile domestic cabal that is in the minority, yet holds power.

“Tyranny” is not a word that should be thrown around lightly, or when it does not apply. When we speak it, we should do so acknowledging the full import and gravity of the term. If we are going to begin to acknowledge that our government is crossing the line into tyranny, is it not incumbent upon us as citizens to address the situation in a manner commensurate with the emergency at hand?

We can start by never, ever, from this point forward, giving this regime the benefit of the doubt by suggesting that they are operating legitimately, or according to any traditional American political dynamic.

Actually, Ed history proved McCarthy was absolutely CORRECT! You might want to try another comparison. We need another McCarthy right now to expose all the socialist and communist in office and get them out!

One way or another that money is in their sights, it’s just a matter of when and how. So now how do I lock it away from their grasp? Or is it too late?

Vote the Bastards out and make sure the new ones know we will do the same to them or worse if they allow it.

This is not combat it is WAR!

The White House launched the same kind of baseless attacks on the Koch family and Americans for Prosperity this summer and have yet to offer one substantial piece of evidence that any of these groups or people have done anything wrong at all, except to oppose Obama’s policies.

I was going to post this story in the Greenroom, but time just slipped away…….

White House officials called on the chamber to go beyond current disclosure laws and establish that no foreign money has been used in its political campaigns. “They can put this to rest,” said Joshua Earnest, a White House spokesman. “They have the keys to the file cabinet.”

There were a lot of questions about Obama’s funding. Did they answer those questions by completely opening their books?

I note a recurring theme of democrats accusing the GOP of tatics that they themselves routinely implement.

Vashta.Nerada on October 11, 2010 at 9:38 AM

True, true. I wonder if that’s because they can’t imagine how a party could win without using underhanded tactics?

I voted for Clinton over Bush but by the time 1996 came around I disliked Clinton so much I filled in the dot for Dole…that said I can’t tell you the depths to which I dislike Obama they pale in comparison to how I feel about Clinton (both actually)…I think he is scum and a liar and don’t think it doesn’t make me sad to refer to the current occupant of the POTUS in such low terms… He and his thugs can’t get out soon enough for this country…

BTW: should we be asking to see Obama’s transcripts now?

BuckeyeSam on October 11, 2010 at 9:51 AM

Now would be a good time for the L.A. Times to release the video of Obama toasting Rashid Kalidi.

Mr. President doesn’t speak the truth about much of anything, does he? He lied his way into office and now he’s trying to lie his way into keeping it. Mr. President, it turns out, is a pathetic jacka$$. Keep him honest, Mr. Rove!

scalleywag on October 11, 2010 at 10:37 AM

Is obama an American? He could put this to rest by paying $15 to show his Birth Certificate to America.

tinkerthinker on October 11, 2010 at 9:56 AM

By his own standards he has to prove he was born in HI and not Kenya now doesn’t he?
