Rasmussen: Angle leads Reid 50/46

posted at 12:15 pm on October 7, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Rasmussen joins a series of fresh polls showing renewed momentum in the Senate race in Nevada for challenger Sharron Angle over incumbent Harry Reid.  Two weeks ago, Reid held a one-point edge in a virtual tie, 48/47.  Today, Angle nearly outpaces the margin of error and reaches the majority level at 50/46:

Republican challenger Sharron Angle has now moved to a four-point lead over Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in Nevada’s bare-knuckles U.S. Senate race.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Nevada Voters shows Angle hitting the 50% mark for the first time since mid-August, while Reid earns 46% of the vote. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate in the race, and two percent (2%) more are undecided.

The sample Rasmussen uses for its survey has a seven-point advantage for Democrats (Rasmussen now has that data for its Platinum subscription members). Barack Obama won the state in 2008 by just over twelve points, but that was an example of overachievement for Democrats in the state.  Nevada had gone twice for George W. Bush, including the razor-thin 2000 election, where Bush won by 3.5%.  As a sample of likely voters, the D/R/I of 41/35/24 most likely overstates Democratic participation and understates independent voters, but it’s at least in the ballpark — and since it overly favors Democrats, is even worse news for Harry Reid.

Harry Reid’s attempts to demonize Angle have largely failed.  Her favorability ratings are identical to Reid’s, 47/52.  That may normally be good news in a race for an incumbent, but not in a markedly anti-incumbent environment.  Reid needed to make Angle a quantum leap worse than himself in order to avoid the inevitable referendum on the Democratic agenda he has championed for the last four years especially.

Furthermore, he’s about out of time, since 83% of all voters are now “certain” of their candidates, with only 9% admitting they can be convinced yet.  That’s actually slightly more true of Democrats at 91% than of Republicans at 87%, but that’s not necessarily good news either for Reid, who’s only holding 86% of his own party.  That means that some Democrats are convinced not to vote for Reid, while 89% of Republicans are going with Angle.

Independents are lining up strongly with Angle, especially among leaners.  Before adding in the leaners, Angle has a 49/31 lead, but with leaners, it goes to 61/33.  It appears that all of the late-breaking voters are flocking to Angle, which is exactly what one would expect in an environment like this.  For instance, 60% of voters want ObamaCare repealed, the same percentage oppose the individual mandate, and 70% think the economy is getting worse or not improving.  Among independents, those numbers are, respectively, 70%, 73%, and 72% — with the last having 61% say that the economy is getting worse.

With those positions, independents are hardly going to decide at the last minute to endorse the status quo.  This four-point gap should expand even further in the next few weeks, regardless of Harry Reid’s advertising budget.

Sharron’s ads focus on Harry’s record in the Senate.

Harry’s ads focus on pretending Sharron said something.

The voters on the fence get it.

Angle Avalanche!

With this Senate’s Democrat Majority Leader clearly heading for his severe beating at home, I’d think that other states’ undecided voters might be influenced by the strong current of popular disgust against their own state’s Democrat candidate.

Obviously, given the numbers, America agrees that the Obama-Pelosi-Reid Marxist phenomena worked misery on the nation. And to the extent that each state is a member of the union, no amount of pork delivery can suffice for the number of people detrimentally affected by this unprecedented administration/Congress.

I’ve wondered how long the populace would still be satisfied grasping at pork straws from corrupt legislators given our nation’s bankruptcy. Sure, big business will propagandize for more authoritarianism. I just question how long the citizenry in trouble remain in denial rather than at least dealing out electoral retribution to the trouble makers that cause such misery.

maverick muse on October 7, 2010 at 12:42 PM

Reid and the WH aren’t going to let Reid lose without a fight. I’m pretty sure that all the fraud stops are going to be pulled for this race. Nevadans who don’t want this election stolen have to get involved by becoming poll watchers and by having cameras ready to document any shenanigans they witness. I have a bad feeling this race will be very nasty at the end.

For certain, the influence of mafioso in the Nevada establishment have polished and well oiled manners of subterfuge. Heck, look at the likes of Harry Reid, perverting Congressional protocol into corrupt fraud, bulldozing “laws” into place that were never constitutionally processed.

Kermit on October 7, 2010 at 12:56 PM

I don’t expect organized crime to go all out to pervert the Nevada election. It’s time consuming, expensive and the result is not guaranteed. I’m counting on them taking the attitude that there’s always another politician ready to be bought and Reid has possibly outlived his usefulness. I don’t think they will necessarily use the shallow grave they dug out in the desert, but they definitely will let Reid know that it’s there, just in case.

Extrafishy on October 7, 2010 at 12:58 PM

Yesterday, the LVRJ had an article which said that Democrats were registering more voters than Republicans and out number them in the state overall. Non-party affiliated new registrations are larger than both the Dems and Repubs.

Harry cannot dodge what is happening in Nevada and if the level of discontent remains high, I think she will win. We have the most powerful Nevadan ever in Congress and yet we are in the toilet by almost every measure.

I think people are starting to think that his power is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Well, I think it’s called, “Tea Party.” We’ve been complaining for years, but, of course, people in my region of the US are dismissed as ignorant, racist, xenophobes.

What millions more have realized is that it isn’t only the South that is held in contempt by political elites. I’ve always known this, but like you I’ve been wondering how long it would be before the message sank in. It has.

I was talking with some of the chaps at the barber shop a friend of mine owns. We all agreed that one of the biggest boons for the rest of the country has been the internet. News travels fast these days, and people are better informed. Ed addressed this yesterday on his show. It’s true, though. I grew up in a Midwestern farming community. Although we subscribed to the WSJ and several other newspapers they were delivered via the post. It was old news, and the politicians could get away with all sorts of shenanigans. We always felt as though we were living in history. Sure, it made us angry. We couldn’t do too much about it.

Now politicians are complaining like that dinosaur, Peterson, that they preferred an uniformed electorate. These days we melt down the phone systems in Congress, email endlessly, speak with assurance at town hall meetings and keep after them. They hate it, but they may as well get used to it.

There’s a lot of pent up anger out here. It didn’t just start with this administration, either. The mantra now is that if they want to send us a tax bill, they’d better think twice about it and be ready to be held accountable.

Anybody out there good with flash drive designing web games? My brilliant idea of the day is a game called PowerWash™ in which the player gets to aim the PowerWasher™ at the politician, peeling them off of the House and Senate and ultimately the White House floors and walls. Replete with screams of horror as they cling to the walls, losing their power and are washed away down the drain and back with their fellow rats. Come on! Somebody do this, pitch it sell it to miniclip, 50/50 (negotiable)

faol on October 7, 2010 at 12:42 PM

That would be a bad bet.

As much as Nevada is a state that was pretty much founded on the fix being in, elections in Las Vegas (and by virtue of it being 2/3 of the vote, the whole state) are remarkably straight. A lot of that has to do with the early voting system, which requires that you show your driver’s license, and then automatically eliminates you from the pool once you have voted.

Stuffing ballot boxes becomes extremely problematic when 65% of the people have already voted prior to Election Day.

UltimateBob on October 7, 2010 at 1:13 PM

That’s true, Bob, but look at what happens when they get to DC. Think Lindsay Graham – or not if you’re eating lunch.

But you get my point, I think. For all of us outside of DC and the liberal, elite centers we’re simply a bunch of patsies to be abused. It’s really, imo, been a game of psychological abuse, i.e. keep telling the millions of middle class taxpayers that, “they must do this or that,” or, “you don’t get it,” or, “you’re ignorant and xenophobic.” You’ve heard it all as well. It’s done to keep people in their places, feeling beholden to their “betters”, keep working and paying to fund the DC Follies.

Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease, but the rate of degeneration can make strange jumps. Look for him to be completely useless in the lame duck session, almost Byrd-like.

In this campaign I’ve stuffed envelopes in Sharron’s home

She probably can’t do anything to undo the damage he’s done, but she’ll be a personal hero just for getting him off the rolls.
