Another brilliant moment in AGW marketing

posted at 12:15 pm on October 6, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Because nothing sells policy like, er, images of people killing childrenAndrew Bolt alerts Australian readers to the latest in marketing from anthropogenic global-warming activists, this time from a group with the ironic name ACT-Responsible.  Kind of makes one long for the days of polar-bear hugs, huh?

I’d say that ACT-R is creatively challenged, all right.  Bolt also objects to a video embedded on his site that exploits a child’s supposed nightmare (while hugging a polar-bear doll, natch), but that one is more stupid than offensive.  It argues that we should allow governments to impose Draconian policies because a child has a nightmare, and ends with several children saying “Save the world!” into a camera.  It’s a good way to avoid acknowledging that the AGW hysterics still haven’t built a single successful predictive model proving their assertions about future weather systems, still haven’t addressed the serious data gaps in their studies, still have Rajendra Pachauri at the head of the IPCC despite the serial scandals regarding their academic standards of inclusion in the report, and in general having offered little but apocalyptic posturing.  Putting a noose around a little girl on an ice cube is all they really have.

The reason the GW alarmists have to resort to such shocking imagery is the severe lack of logic they are suffering from. They have to astronomically increase the “threat” to these heights in order to have people feel emotionally attached to their cause. It doesn’t work with thinking people.

“You can’t hug children with nuclear arms”…had to throw that one in, one of my favorites.

I think this is actually something we should all be concerned about-from a strategic point of view.
Bcs so much of the technology we are increasingly dependent upon needs these elements.
And since we have cut off our noses to spite our face by making mining in the US extremely difficult to say the least, we ought to be trying to rectify this somehow.
To be honest, I’m not up on the rare earth metal reserves of this country, but obviously we know that China has some & now the possible motherload in Afghanistan.
I’m also betting that Russia has some (i.e. Siberia-area).
AK probably does, too I suppose, along with places in WY, CO perhaps & probably the Stillwater mine.
Or we could just simply go into space & mine meteors.
IDK-but it is a shortage problem.

Badger40 on October 6, 2010 at 8:09 PM

Chinese rare earth metals are no small matter.

As we see our government force us away from fossil fuels, all that green energy and new technologies are under threat from China. So, instead of being held hostage by OPEC, we are facing being made hostage to China. Stringent environmental laws passed by Congress have shut down all such mineral extraction programs here in the United States.

So, in order to reach that green energy and green technologies paradise….the Chinese hold all the markers. And they will use them. They are already.

profitsbeard on October 6, 2010 at 8:23 PM

There’s another way to look at it. Today we consume oil pumped from other countries, and receive products made from rare earths mined from other countries. Meanwhile we are keeping our own rare earths and oil safely in the ground under our control. So we will have it for later — when we really really need it.

What we should do is stop shipping “junk” electronics to China for recycling and instead extract the metals ourselves and stash them.

So far, what you, and the rest of the alarmageddon community have put forth are not facts, as that term is commonly understood.

AGW hysterics have failed to provide full, and transparent data to prove their hypothesis.

Nor have they yet answered for cooking the books, (or “hiding the decline,” if you prefer.)

The so-called facts they’ve put forth to this point do not pass the rigorous standards laid out for 7th grade earth science students.

Yet, you continue to offer them as settled facts.

oakland on October 6, 2010 at 8:53 PM

LOL!
I just stated some facts above.
The biggest one is that CO2 does not drive climate change.
The next biggest one is that CO2 does not cause temp to increase. The increase in temp causes the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Let’s also ignore solar cycles, the Milankovitch theory, etc.
Also, let’s ignore the biggest climate record known to man: ROCKS.
They tell a story of CONTINUOUS climate change way before man ever showed up on the scene.
The AGW scare bus left without you.
Run Forest, run!

Badger40 on October 6, 2010 at 10:04 PM

The increase in temp causes the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Rising temps can cause more CO2 to be absorbed in the atmosphere.
My bad.
And it still doesn’t change anything.
Worry about water vapor. The atmosphere is like 0.25% water vapor.
CO2 makes up about 0.038% of the atmosphere.
Grasping at straws. That’s what this CO2 thing is all about.
Go sell stupid to someone else please.

Anthropogenic global warming and climate change are scientific matters. According to most scientists who are knowledgeable in the matter, this phenomenon is a threat at a very high level of statistical confidence.

How we might deal with this issue is a completely separate issue. Most folks in this country would rather not deal with it at all; that is our choice.

Let’s not confuse the two issues.

As far as the predicted extremely cold european winter, if this becomes a reality (i.e., coldest in a thousand years), it may be one of the final nails in the denialist perspective’s coffin. The large increase in arctic ice melt is leading to a decrease in salinity in the northern Atlantic and Arctic oceans (it demonstrable that the ice is disappearing rapidly in the region). The fear has long been that the oceanic heat conveyor that brings warm conditions to northwestern europe could be disrupted by this decrease in salinity, resulting in Siberia-like winters.

As a geologist & science teacher, as you should well know, I have been following this for almost 15 yrs, reading copious amounts of literature & scientific papers on so many disciplines relating to this subject.
You, sir, are full of horse $hit.
The ‘statistical confidence’ you state ‘most scienctists’ who are ‘knowledgeable’ about this is tweaked, massaged, FALSE information.
So many of the ‘studies’ are based upon FALSE information obtained WRONGLY.
In the scientific community there exists MORONS, CHARLATANS, PROFITEERS, and EGOSTISTICAL power hungry jerks who know full well what they are doing with all of this propaganda.
You choose to ignore the mountains of FALSIFIED INFORMATION that have led to the ‘statistical confidence’ you are attributing as fact.
This issue is extremely complicated & there is so much we do NOT know about ‘climate change’.
The things we do know do NOT point to AGW-they point to continuous, cyclical changes in the Earth’s climate over the BILLIONS of years it has existed.
NOTHING human have done were/are, or are going to do will influence the climate to the point that it has a ‘fever’, cause an ice age, increase the greenhouse effect to the point of boiling, blah blah blah.
You are informed by propaganda.
You have an uncritical mind if you believe ‘most’ scientists who are ‘knowledgeable’ believe any of this crap.
Scientific houses are in major need of cleaning.
It has already begun.
If you can’t read a scientific paper & point out methodology flaws or even flaws in the scientist’s conclusions based upon their ‘data’, then you need to stop spreading your misinformed lies, go back to school & take some classes that teach you scientific critical thinking skills, the scientific method, statistical computation, etc.
Bcs if you can’t determine whether someone knows what they’re talking about or not & you’re just basing your opinion on where they teach, who they work for, how loud they are in the media, you don’t know a damned thing about any of this.

Everything you doomsayers harp about happened in the recent past. Arctic ice melted at supposedly unprecedented rates. Glaciers receded, people wandered about screaming the end is near!!!! Global warming!!!!

Then, we started cooling. Then we warmed up. Then we started cooling, now we’re in the middle of a warmer period with all signs pointing to another cooling period on the way.

Read this from 1922. Pay attention the section “The Changing Arctic”.

You people are absolutely nuts and ignore not only what’s in front of your own face, but the real science that disproves your religion of Global cooling, er, Global warming, er, climate change, er, global climate disruption.

Rules for Predictions.
1. Never predict more than 10 years out, people never worry that far ahead and will ignore you.
2. Never predict less than 5 years, thats soon enough that everyone can tell whether you are lying or wrong.

And in the 1970s we were all going to freeze to death in the Ice Age.

Badger,
Your list of credentials doesn’t include a degree in climate science, so I am wondering what expertise you claim.
Nonetheless, I am not an expert either. However, I do have two undergraduate degrees in science/engineering, and taught all sciences in high school over thirty years. Thirty years is also the period of time over which I have studied AGW theory, including scientific articles and books.

You, sir, are full of horse $hit.

This is the extent of your contribution to the debate? I am assuming, therefore, that you have nothing scientific to offer.

BTW, I hope you don’t go into these types of rants while in the classroom.

You people are absolutely nuts and ignore not only what’s in front of your own face, but the real science that disproves your religion of Global cooling, er, Global warming, er, climate change, er, global climate disruption

Darwin, Please share this “real science” with me.

And in the 1970s we were all going to freeze to death in the Ice Age.

Yes, in the next ice age, whenever that comes about (probably in a few thousands of years).

oakland on October 7, 2010 at 7:13 PM

oakland on October 7, 2010 at 7:13 PM

Go look up what a geologist studies: THE PAST.
Rocks are a record of past climate.
Paleoclimate is focused upon.
And one point you fail to comprehend:
ANYONE with a degree in a hard science or anyone who can READ & THINK critically can get the main points in someone’s PUBLISHED methodology & data sets & come to their own conclusion.
For instance, I do not have to be a biologist to critique the research of a biologist.
Now it is true that another biologist will have some greater insight into another’s work than I would.
But you fully fail to realize that ALL scientifically minded people, whether you have a degree or not, can make a reasonable judgement of someone else’s work.
So now I wonder since you hold this opinion that bcs I do not have a specific degree in climatology, how can I know anything about climate, & since you have said yourself you do not have the same degree, then how can YOU form a judgement so sweeping on this issue?
I give my students the tools to judge data & conclusions for themselves.
I point out how to judge a competent conclusion & I point out how to then judge the competency of the data & how it was collected.
Notice there are many scientific arguments that fall apart when one looks at how data is collected.
And it matters not if you taught HS science bcs the fact that you so sweepingly declare we are causing this thing, shows you have no insight into what climate really is.
And according to you, one must evidently be an expert in what they are judging or their judgement doesn’t count at all.
You are ridiculous. And still full of horse$hit.
And since you are already so knowledgeable, but not an expert, & have been reading up on this thing for longer than I have, then go back yourself & look at the clusterfark all of these biased incompetent scientists have grinded out for the grant $$.
I already provided some food for thought here. The big one:
CO2 has never been proven as a driver of climate change.
And CO2 has not been found to DIRECTLY affect temp.
CO2 is AFFECTED by already rising temps.
If you are depending upon ME to give you food here, then you are a lazy science or ex-science teacher.
Go look the $hit up for yourself.

Badger40 on October 8, 2010 at 8:47 AM

ALL scientifically minded people, whether you have a degree or not, can make a reasonable judgement of someone else’s work.

Badger40 on October 8, 2010 at 8:47 AM

That is, of course, assuming those people can make reasonable judgements.
Lots of educated & uneducated people CANNOT think reasonably.
You have only to look to all academia & those with any kind of degree at all to know that no matter how much learning you’ve had, you can still be dumb as a bag of hammers.
We have living proof of that here on HA.

Hey genius? There is no such thing as a degree in ‘climate science’. If someone is claiming they have one, they’re lying sacks of sh*t.

Yes, in the next ice age, whenever that comes about (probably in a few thousands of years).

oakland on October 7, 2010 at 7:13 PM

Hey genius? In the past, the typical ice-age lasted a hundred thousand years. The typical inter-glacial period lasted ten thousand years. It’s now been eleven thousand years since an ice-age.

If “global climate disruption” were true (which it’s not, if you look at real, hard numbers), then it would be an awesomely wonderful thing (because most humans would die if went to a real ice-age.)

We need to burn more ‘fossil fuels’, for the children.

Squiggy on October 8, 2010 at 11:05 AM

Oh, bloody nonsense. Can an entomologist (bug guy) make reasonable judgements about a particle physicist’s work? Can a quantum mechanics guy make reasonal judgments about an agronomist’s work?

NO, not without having full access and understanding of the basics of their fields, their modes of invesigation, the rigor of their experimental design or mathematical proofs, etc.
