Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on October 5, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Maybe Barack Obama got a little too accustomed to those set-up townhalls. When he decided to venture beyond those scripted events and talk to the common folk (an admirable idea, of course), he got honest feedback about his policies. In fact, Obama and his team apparently thought it was a little too honest, and perhaps just a little too on point:

Trying to sell his economic record in Iowa yesterday, President Obama got an earful from a successful businessman who pleaded with him not to raise taxes.

“One of the things that concerns me is the repeal of the Bush tax cuts,” said David Greenspon, referring to Democratic plans to raise taxes on individuals earning more than $200,000 a year and on families and certain businesses earning more than $250,000.

“The repeal — I don’t care if it is 5 percent — that’s 5 percent that would create a job,” he told Obama during a meeting with about 70 people in a couple’s back yard in Des Moines.

“Five percent on millions of dollars of profit creates many jobs . . . As the government gets more and more involved in business and more and more involved in taxes, what you’re finding is you’re strangling those job-creation vehicles.”

And what was Obama’s immediate response?  Er …

Before Greenspon could complete his question, his microphone was cut off and taken out of his hand.

Hey, pal.  If Obama wanted a real debate on tax policy, he would have invited John Boehner to the White House.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I lived in the Quad City area (NW Illinois) during the 2008 election and couldn’t believe how many outwardly conservative people fell for this charlatan. Devout people in our church were willing to overlook his position on abortion for….who knows? It made no sense. Just like attending one of these “me” fests in a backyard makes no sense. Does anyone really think Obama is listening?

texabama on October 5, 2010 at 8:12 AM

O only listens to those who make themselves into victims.

Kissmygrits on October 5, 2010 at 8:19 AM

It’s interesting to see Obama’s response:

Showing some frustration, Obama said, “Your taxes haven’t gone up in this administration. Your taxes have gone down in this administration. There’s a notion that, well, he’s a Democrat so your taxes must have gone up. That’s just not true.”

But Greenspon wasn’t saying that his taxes had gone up already. He was saying that his taxes would go up if the tax cuts are not renewed.

Saw the same at my church as well. It was amazing and very disappointing.

On the main topic, it should have been pretty clear by now that Obama simply refuses to listen to contrary opinions. I don’t see that changing, no matter what happens in any election.

OT – Democrats down by 6 in new WaPo/ABC News poll.

Watch the WaPo hacks try to bury the lede:

Less than a month before the midterm elections, the political landscape remains strongly tilted toward Republicans, although Democrats have made modest improvements with voters since their late-summer low point, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Democrats have cut in half the GOP’s early-September advantage on the question of which party’s candidates voters say they will support on Nov. 2. They have also made small gains on the question of which party people trust to handle big issues, such as the economy and health care.

Voters give Democrats a significant edge as the party that would do a better job in helping the middle class, which has been a key campaign message from the White House in recent weeks.

President Obama’s approval rating has rebounded to where it was in July after hitting an all-time low a month ago. Also, in some state races, Democratic candidates have taken the lead over their Republican opponents or narrowed GOP advantages.

Despite these apparent signs of improvement, the new Post-ABC poll suggests that Democrats remain at a significant disadvantage. Their hopes of holding down losses depend more on the performance of individual candidates than on dramatic changes in the overall climate.

The poll underscores how much support Democrats have lost among voters since 2006, the year the party recaptured control of Congress.

Among likely voters, Republicans hold a six-point edge, 49 percent to 43 percent, on the congressional ballot. At this time four years ago, Democrats led by 12 points. Then, Democrats also held a 19-point advantage when voters were asked which party they trusted to deal with the country’s main problems.

So that’s five paragraphs you have to go down to find out that despite all of this wonderful, dynamic, incredible, awesome, totally tubular “performance improvement,” the Democrats are still down by six in a poll that weighted Democrats more heavily.

And by 13 in Gallup. And by 3 in Rasmussen.

This is, of course, a sign that the GOP is doomed. Oh, wait. No it isn’t:

Today, the public is almost evenly divided on that question, nearly matching public sentiment in October 1994, the last time Republicans won both the House and the Senate.

“OK, and now, who is willing to re-new their contributions to Organizing for America, because that is why you all got invited to this barbecue in the first place” (most hands go up) “Yes, that is very good. You can all leave checks with my assistant here…”

“And, just for the record, who won’t be donating again?…” (a few hands go up) “That’s all right. No Pressure…”

To be honest, the lead to the question was way too long and a bit far afield. I did find it interesting that when O first understood this wasn’t a friendly question, he walks toward the guy with his arms crossed and a very stern look – makes me think he’s saying “how dare you…. I won”. Next we have the tapping of the microphone – which means “I’m ready to talk, shut up…”

I do not see the microphone being taken away, just that O jumps in.

In response to O’s response: Has anyone seen their taxes go down in the last 2 years? There’s been a cigarette tax increase, the mandatory purchase of Ins. that wasn’t a tax before it became a tax penalty, didn’t gas taxes go up?

Thanks. That’s a good interview with the guy. Everyone who has 5 minutes should check it out. He’s in light manufacturing in Des Moines and has concerns about taxes and exchange rates, and Obama turns around and compares him to a hedge fund manager a la Bernie Madoff and re-frames the man’s question as advocating on behalf of the Chicoms. Real swell guy we have for a President.

And being a small businessman myself, it was terrific to hear that I’ve already gotten 6 “tax breaks” from Obama. I’ll be sure to tell my accountant, because he’s having trouble finding them.

Quote of the Century

Some people have the vocabulary to sum up things in a way you can understand them. This quote came from the Czech Republic . Someone over there has it figured out. We have a lot of work to do.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama , who is a mere symptom of what ails America .

Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince.

The Republic can survive a Barack Obama , who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”
