Video: McMahon releases the Kraken

posted at 2:20 pm on October 4, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Once someone gets publicly exposed as a liar, it makes it very difficult for them to regain trust. “If he lied about Vietnam,” Linda McMahon’s new ad asks about Richard Blumenthal, “what else is he lying about?” And that’s a pretty good question:

The New York Times reports that the release of this ad, which hits the airwaves today, intended on shaking up Blumenthal ahead of a scheduled debate tonight:

Just hours before the first formal debate in Connecticut’s United States Senate contest, the Republican candidate, Linda E. McMahon, released a new video showing her Democratic opponent, Richard Blumenthal, suggesting that he had served in the Vietnam War even though he did not. The video the McMahon campaign obtained shows Mr. Blumenthal, the state’s attorney general, delivering an address that it says occurred in Bridgeport in 2003 to express support for American troops overseas. “When we returned, we saw nothing of this gratitude,” Mr. Blumenthal said. …

It was circulated on the Internet on Monday morning and was set to be broadcast by television stations later in the day, according to the McMahon campaign. The attack was unleashed as Ms. McMahon, the former chief executive of World Wrestling Entertainment, was preparing to debate Mr. Blumenthal on Monday night in Hartford.

Republicans close to the McMahon campaign said the goal was to personally shake up Mr. Blumenthal, a once ubiquitous presence in Connecticut who has significantly curtailed his public appearances after The New York Times published an article in May describing how he had misrepresented his military service over the years.

Will Blumenthal get angry and address this issue tonight in the debate?  Or will he wait to see whether McMahon finds a way to work it into the conversation?  Blumenthal apologized for his repeated allusions to service in Vietnam when he never left the States, a foolish series of lies that undermined the honorable service he did perform in uniform for his country.  He may have to apologize again, and hope it kills the issue for good.  But if he instead decides to get combative over the issue, McMahon will get the chance to remind him and the voters in Connecticut that those lies go back for years, and that it speaks directly to his character and honesty.

trubble on October 4, 2010 at 2:34 PM

Will Blumenthal get angry and address this issue tonight in the debate? Or will he wait to see whether McMahon finds a way to work it into the conversation?

Or, Blumenthal will cunningly wait for his own opportune moment to clarify the limits of his military service and politely apologize for any misunderstanding (though it was all intentionally deceptive on his part) as he brings up whatever regarding the current/past US involvement in Afghanistan/Iraq and how that influences whatever point he’s making.

…a foolish series of lies that undermined the honorable service he did perform in uniform for his country.

It is tricky to argue against that sentiment, but in those days, The Marine Reserves weren’t sent to Vietnam. They were a safe haven for guys who didn’t want to go to war and had quite a long waiting list to get in. I’d love to know at what point during his last deferment he put his name on the Reserves waiting list.

I had a step brother who did that; the wait was 6 months in 1969, I joined the regular Marines that year and had no problem getting right in! The day I left for boot camp, the Army had 5 too many draftees to transport to their basic training and since none would volunteer to go Marine, The Marine GySgt. “volunteered” the 5 he wanted.

Blumenthal is a legal draft dodger.

What scares me is the sheer amount of knowledge about wrestling from HotAir readers. Wow, you people know the vernacular of every move! I haven’t watched wrestling since John ‘The Golden Greek’ Tolos was, er, fighting. Can’t even remember what decade that was. But I think I was maybe 10.

JonPrichard on October 4, 2010 at 3:25 PM

Using “lied” in a sentence referring to a leftist pinko Democrat is redundant. Now that I think about it, so is “leftist pinko Democrat.”

ncborn on October 4, 2010 at 3:29 PM

A lot of vets support Blumenthal. You’d be surprised. And McMahon is not especially likeable.

She’s also overplayed her hand by sending out too much campaign literature. It ticks people off, and serves mostly to remind them how wealthy she is and how she made her money. The WWF doesn’t play well in blue CT.

Her biggest problem is that she won’t answer questions about specifics. Every time there is a rundown of the two candidates’ positions, her column has several “did not answers” or “did not responds.” So it will be interesting to see how she does in the debate.

Personally, I don’t get the outrage about self-financing candidates like McMahon and Whitman, who are accused of trying to “buy” an election. All elections are bought; the only variable is who’s paying.

Meredith on October 4, 2010 at 3:29 PM

A lot of vets support Blumenthal.

Animal doctors?

Or phony ones.

This is a reprehensible lie.

NoDonkey on October 4, 2010 at 3:38 PM

It’s already out there, at this point, Blumie’s best bet is mokusatsu
and hope it works better for him than it did the Japanese Empire. Anything else just keeps it churning around and that’s a loser for him.

jnelchef on October 4, 2010 at 3:46 PM

Anyone watch the movie Tropic Thunder? Blumenthal reminds me of that line, “You’re the Milli Vanilli of patriots!”.

Kevin71 on October 4, 2010 at 3:55 PM

Where do YOU live, NoDonkey? HA rightwingers–they know EVERYTHING!

After the major coverage of Blumental’s “lies” broke, there were several articles and letters to the editor showing that many veterans do indeed support Blumenthal. They say he’s always supported THEM, and that actions speak louder than words.

No lie, genius.

Meredith on October 4, 2010 at 3:57 PM

She’s also overplayed her hand by sending out too much campaign literature. It ticks people off, and serves mostly to remind them how wealthy she is and how she made her money. The WWF doesn’t play well in blue CT.

There’s an upside to self-financing. I went to the Park Road Parade in West Hartford (CT) last Saturday, and the Linda McMahon campaign was GIVING away (not selling) yard signs, campaign T-shirts, and bumper stickers. You can show your support without paying for it.

As for specifics, you can read lots of specifics in her campaign mailers on what she is for, what she is against, and what she would WANT to do if she is elected Senator. Of course, no Senator is a dictator, and she’ll have to get 59 Senators to agree with her to pass anything, so she may not be able to do everything she promises if she is elected. Hopefully, she can address some of those specifics during tonight’s debate.

There’s no question that she has been “flooding the zone” with TV ads and mailers, but despite her wealth, she comes across as a plain-spoken common-sense “lady-next-door”, without over-the-top rhetoric, which plays well here.

Interestingly enough, her yard signs and most of her mailers don’t even mention that she’s a Republican. She’s running as “a different kind of Senator”–not Dodd, not Blumenthal, just as herself, for cutting spending and taxes, and “putting Connecticut back to work”. She’s running as a soft face of conservatism, and it just might work.
