Poll: Among cable-news networks, MSNBC trusted by … 12%

posted at 10:55 am on September 27, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

In an otherwise serious poll from Politico and George Washington University, the survey also asks respondents which cable-news network they access most for political news.  The results aren’t terribly surprising, as they more or less mirror the ratings, but are still noteworthy for one network’s almost-total marginalization.  While Fox News Channel sailed to an impressive 42% and CNN got a substantial if unimpressive 30%, MSNBC got …

More people are getting their news about the upcoming election from cable television than any other source, and from Fox News more than any other cable channel, according to a POLITICO/George Washington University Battleground Poll released Monday.

The poll found that 81 percent of those polled get their news about the midterm elections from cable channels, like Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, or their websites, compared with 71 percent from national network news channels, such as ABC, NBC or CBS, and their websites.

Among cable news channels, Fox was the clear winner, with 42 percent of respondents saying it is their main source, compared with 30 percent who cited CNN and 12 percent who rely on MSNBC.

How did it get to this state?  After all, NBC had a long history in television news, starting decades before CNN and even longer than Fox.  Its partnership with Microsoft should have given the cable news network a distinct advantage in the New Media world.  Their roster of news anchors, present and future, should have immediately challenged CNN for primacy and marginalized Fox, who may have had cash but relatively fewer newsgathering resources in the US when it launched.

Under the direction of GE’s Jeff Immelt, though, NBC’s cable network went for the full-insane demographic.  Fox took CNN’s talking-head format and simply reversed the bias, although Fox rightly argues that it presents more opposing viewpoints than CNN did as part of their establishment talent and not just occasional guests and party spinmeisters.  NBC decided to emulate Air America with its cable lineup instead, perhaps seeing some opportunity in the last Bush term to capitalize on his unpopularity and become a center of opposition opinion.

Rather than accomplish that, the decision by NBC and its parent GE has not just destroyed MSNBC’s credibility but also NBC’s as well.  With the exception of Joe Scarborough, who is hard to pigeonhole but certainly isn’t a hard-Left hysteric, the entire lineup is exactly what one would find on the failed libtalker radio network.  It’s no coincidence that two of its featured hosts come straight out of Air America, Rachel Maddow and Ed Schultz.  Maddow has, at least, produced a watchable show, albeit with a hard-Left tilt that clearly is out of touch with the mainstream, but Schultz is barely coherent.  Top that off with a daily “news” broadcast from Keith Olbermann that almost literally consists of a Two Minute Hate (Olbermann’s WPIW lists), and it’s a recipe for the kind of disaster that only political hacks could love.  The wonder is that GE and NBC apparently seem content to alienate 88% of the viewing audience with its trainwreck theater.

The pundit class on MSN is their problem. Chuck Todd is actually not all that bad for the news portion.

It’s a function of opinion and whom people relate to, and today……..the liberal mantra just isn’t popular.

Any “rocket scientist” foolish enough to hire Keith Olberman for anything above High School sports reporting gets what they DESERVE!

The scariest result of this poll is that CNN still got 30%. Why is that?

“With the exception of Joe Scarborough, who is hard to pigeonhole…”

Why is it hard? He is a ho that turns tricks for a dollar. If Valerie Jarrett says it is time to bash Boehner, Joe bashes Boehner non-stop for a week. If Jarrett sends out the word to change gears and attack Gingrich, Joe jumps in and spends the next week bashing Gingrich.

Nothing hard to figure out about Ole Joe. If his boss says rollover and waves a dollar bill in front of his face, he rolls over, sits up and begs and would probably catch a Frisbee with his teeth if the price is right.

Spineless POS…..

Well, let’s see. I can watch Kimberly Guillfoyle on Fox or Rachel Maddow on MSNBC….Is there really a choice???

The only thing CNN has going for it is Kiran Chetry, and I’m still not convinced she’s not a closet commie…Whereas Rick DirtySanchez, hell, I’d bet he’s really one of Fidel’s illegitimate bastards…

adamsmith on September 27, 2010 at 2:35 PM

Add up CNN and messNBC and you have it at 42% vs. 43% Fox.

CNN is not really any different than messNBC. Sure messNBC is more shrill. But the content on both networks is DEMOCRAT GOOD, REPUBLICAN BAD. At least messNBC doesn’t pretend to be neutral like CNN.

..ever been to a health club, gym, or airport? All of the TVs there are “roadblocked” with CNN ~~ i.e., they all are playing CNN.

Ask one of the mindless attendants in 24-hour fitness to change one — just one — to Fox and they dissolve in a fit of apoplexy and, you (used to) get the glaring stares of the narcissistic, lib-loving amazon stair-walking women who pine for a shot of Obama’s glistening man-boobs as he emerges from the surf.

The airport? Fat chance!

There is a heart-warming story about a recent visit I paid to the USMC mess hall aboard Pendleton during a recent USAF auxiliary stint i did down there. It was said that the “Master Guns” who ran the mess hall went nuclear when one of his troops switched of Fox for MSNBC. His policy: Fox and ESPN!

The Dinasour media is on the extinction list. Even Fox News isn’t effecting outcomes, look at Delaware Republican primary, Castle was supposed to pull it out and he didn’t. Bill Maher is flinging his feces at O’Donnell from HBO and if New Media didn’t report it who would know or care?

The ratings are in the for just-completed 2009-2010 network evening news season. And when compared to 2008-2009 season, “NBC Nightly News” ABC’s “World News” and the “CBS Evening News” have lost a combined 739,000 Total Viewers and a combined 338,000 A25-54 viewers.

It’s all over but the crying, how many times do you hear from fellow bloggers no one gets their news from the Tee Vee anymore?

The same is going to go for the proposed rallys coming up at the Lincoln Memorial they all better hope Fox News Covers the Rallies otherwise MSNBC’s 14 viewers will be about it. If a tree falls in the forest does anyone hear it?

People don’t trust the Government but they really don’t trust the MSM I suppose it’s because if you flip on CNN and MSNBC they get called racist- and they know they aren’t. Darwin Rules: Dumb corporate media – adapt of die out.

More from the same poll:

Good News For Rachel Maddow… Nobody Knows Who She Is
…MSNBC’s personalities were largely ranked as unknown by respondents: 70 percent said they had never heard of Ed Schultz, 55 percent said they had never heard of Rachel Maddow and 42 percent said they had never heard of Keith Olbermann.

JerseyJeff on September 27, 2010 at 4:28 PM

Christine Amanpour not getting the job done either.

What’s so complex? If you are the head of one of these networks, you program for the majority of your audience – the ones with disposable income, you don’t drive “anyone” away with wannabe Marxist – who hate the middle class. It’s as if these networks can’t adapt to the “Change” they need a new business model. Bashing the values of most Americans turns out, it turns them off so why would they want to buy their sponsors products let alone watch their programing?

The Majority of people in this country either identify Independent or Conservative. Only 20% or so identify Liberal and of those a Sliver identify Progressive or Left – the people who hate this country the way it is, and want Euro Socialism. They can’t accept we aren’t Socialist. Corporatist they have infected both political parties.

What is the media polling at these days? It has to be lower than Congress approval rating. People can’t relate to these poseurs.

And all the old networks, CNN and MSNBC are fighting over a sliver of 20& of the demographic, that identifies Liberal that even watches the news on a regular basis. Apparently whether they have any money to buy their sponsors products doesn’t even enter into their equation.

I can’t believe Klein put Client 9 on CNN…. that’s some kind of special genius there :)

NBC News is heading for some serious turn-over in the personnel department.

Comcast didn’t buy NBC/Universal to lose money, they bought it to make money.

The only way they can do that is to compete with Fox and FNC.

The only way they can do that

Grace_is_sufficient on September 27, 2010 at 6:15 PM

You wonder why the MSM is so Lefty? Well — some of it is the ideology of the owners (the Ochs family that owns 90% of the NYT class B stock). Some if it is because the reporters, editors, and talking heads are mostly Lefties and they live in a bubble.

But here is another reason. TV shows what it does because of advertising. That is the beginning and end of it. So who buys the stuff pushed in TV ads? Try the bottom half of the Bell Curve. So of course advertising aims at them. Same reason that men in sitcoms are universally idiots — because women buy 70% of the “stuff” sold on TV. So if your audience work for the government, in pink collar union jobs, or collect “benefits” rather than working — you tailor your shows to them. They don’t want to think, many of them can’t think — so just feed them sitcoms, game shows, “reality TV”, the View, and Olbergeek.

Tim_CA on September 27, 2010 at 11:29 AM

That MSNBC’s ratings were even worse before they went all-nutcase-all-the-time. From the day they launched, pretty much everything the put on the air barely even registered in the ratings. And once FNC started taking off, it just made MSNBC look even worse. This format, at least, attracts some viewers.

So, by GE/NBCU standards, the left format has been a wild success. At least the channel isn’t losing money hand over fist and causing Corporate to hold “Dear God What Are We Going To Do”? meetings every two weeks.

But as Fox grows ever stronger and CNN (as a company, if not in prime time) makes money hand over fist, those old days are being forgotten. And Comcast isn’t going to care about “But look at how bad it was in 1998!” at all. They’re going to want to see an MSNBC that’s more evenly competitive with Fox and CNN.

And of course, the current course will never provide those sorts of numbers; there literally aren’t enough Americans that leftist enough to get the ratings they want.

The Lone Platypus on September 27, 2010 at 9:41 PM

Personally, I am completely against TV in public spaces, at least with sound.

There is nothing more irritating then experiencing a flight delay in an airport waiting area, while having a cable news show blasting overhead, whether I agree with the politics or not.

I’d rather be in the smoking lounge and I don’t smoke.
