Senator Ma’am, International Woman of Mystery

posted at 2:55 pm on September 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Barbara Boxer says she wants California voters to send her back to the Senate, but she might have an easier time making that argument if she had spent more time there in the first place.  Jim Geraghty reports on Boxer’s travel habits, as well as her habit of having family tag along to such hotbeds of foreign-policy focus as … Paris, France, where Boxer ostensibly studied Islamic influence, and Dublin, where Boxer researched US-Russian relations?  I guess Moscow wasn’t as much fun:

Since 2000, Sen. Barbara Boxer, California Democrat, has taken 18 trips sponsored by outside organizations, at a value of $97,975.

Naturally, if you want to learn about the Islamic world, you go to . . . Paris, France. With your spouse. For a week. At a cost of $12,272, as Boxer did in 2008.

If you want to become more familiar with the impact of U.S. policy on Latin America, clearly, you go to . . . thePunta de Mita beach resort in Mexico. With your spouse. Three times, in 2006, 2005, and 2002, at a cost of roughly $6,000 per trip.

If you want to learn more about U.S.-Russia-European relations, you go to . . . Dublin, Ireland, for five days, at a cost of more than $6,000, as she did in 2005. (I salute her taste.) Or perhaps you go to London, at a cost of $8,260, as she did in 2002.

It’s not just a California thing, either.  Jim also notes that while Boxer’s 14 privately-funded trips cost over $5,000 each as of 2005, her colleague Dianne Feinstein traveled a lot more lightly, with an average cost of just $292 per trip.  It’s difficult to keep expenses down when traveling to such lush locations, thanks to the influence she wields in the Senate.

Perhaps that’s why the latest Fox News poll shows Boxer’s approval rating at 41%:

She and incumbent Sen. Barbara Boxer remain essentially tied. Fiorina gained 2 points to finish at 46 percent. Boxer bubbled up one point to finish at 47 percent.

While Boxer’s 41 percent approval rating may explain why she is having so much trouble getting elected to a fourth term, her performance may have something to do with slack support for Obama and his agenda.

Obama’s California job approval rating slid 3 points to 45 percent. The percentage of voters who think Obama’s policies have hurt the state’s economy rose 2 points to 37 percent. Only 25 percent believe Obama’s policies have helped the state economically.

Or it may have something to do with Boxer living large while voters expect her to work.

“It’s just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title vacation, so I’d appreciate it, yes, thank you,” she said.

ButterflyDragon on September 21, 2010 at 2:59 PM

Let’s all hope her number is up
It seems that she and Pelosi think the TAXPAYERS are supposed to pay for Private flights every where and frequent trips to and from DC
The job is in DC if you hold the seat you should stay in DC and not JET HOME every weekend
I give the SEIU GOLDEN CAKE SERVER award to BOXER

I totally agree with her. Whenever I want to study the effects of overfishing on Alaskan salmon, I travel to Tahiti.

Actually, I wish all Democrat senators would take vacations instead of ‘going to work.’ Heck, it would save us money to fund these vacations in lieu of them passing these country-busting spending bills.

I’d love to see the former Senator Ma’am Boxer making beds in some resort she formerly visited because she’s having such a hard time finding a job with her prissy and entitled attitude.

Senator Boxer is going down this fall, she is going down hard and I want to see her pantsuited a$$ standing in a soupline jumping up and down because she’s hungry, entitled and a…….SENATOR dammit!

Just think of the cost savings we’ll get when Pelosi is no longer speaker and no longer needs to take a 747 to fly her and her family home to the west coast. Boehner lives in Ohio which is a short hop, skip and a jump from DC.

With a side trip to Marseillestan, where Ayatollah Khomeini sought political asylum. It’s about 1/4 Muslim now, with a lot of ghettoes where no gendarmes (police) dare patrol. France colonized Algeria, now Algeria is returning the favor.

A trip there might help Left Coast Barbie understand her President’s faith.

Steve Z on September 21, 2010 at 3:16 PM

Boxer’s 14 privately-funded trips cost over $5,000 each

On the bright side, at least she wasn’t using taxpayer funds for these outings (except for her lavish and very undeserved salary).

Box-o-rocks is going down. Even if it means another fool like Fiorina, it’s a Good Thing.

rayra on September 21, 2010 at 3:24 PM

Everyone remembers that Boxer was one of the idiots involved in the House Check Cashing Scandal in the early ’90′s right? She was one of the idiots who couldn’t balance a checkbook and kept writing checks because she still had some checks in the book or something.

And what happened? She was promoted to Senator!

That’s the “Washington Way” …

F-Up, Move Up.

HondaV65 on September 21, 2010 at 3:26 PM

Paris, France, where Boxer ostensibly studied Islamic influence,

Ah, les emeutes de banlieues de 2005!

That’s definitely the place to study Muslim arson culture — where they burn people, busses, and cars, torch public buildings….

Actually, I wish all Democrat senators would take vacations instead of ‘going to work

A way needs to be found so that, once they’ve left the country we don’t have to let them back in unless they can prove they’ve actually upheld their oath of office. Maybe we could work a deal with Iran or NK to keep some of them. Permanently.

Barbara Boxer deserves to be tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail.

She provides ZERO value.

Utterly worthless, stupid, vacuous pit of scum – Boxer.

She steals money from the taxpayers, for lavish vacations she could well afford on her lavish salary.

Vacations the vast majority of her constituents can only dream of, because of her idiot party’s destruction of the economy.

NoDonkey on September 21, 2010 at 3:34 PM

Rasmussen has her up 47-43…hard to believe…it seems like this past week California changed her mind…hopefully it will change one more time…

Vote Barbara Boxer OUT OF OFFICE!

Beg every Californian you know to vote for Carly Fiorina!

http://www.carlyforca.com/

We need to be working hard NOW to elect Carly Fiorina. Absentee ballots are scheduled to be mailed in California on October 4 which is less than 2 weeks away.

A huge percentage of voters in California vote during the early voting period so we really can’t wait until November.

wren on September 21, 2010 at 3:45 PM

Even when Senator Boxer is in her home state of California she avoids her constituents.

Rather than holding Townhall meetings in August 2009 to listen to her constituents’ concerns about Obamacare, Senator Boxer spent her “District Work Period” on a book tour to promote her new book.

Here is the video of Californians protesting Boxer’s Book Tour stop in Danville California:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBqHXDV0AFA

Watch the end of the video to see Boxer sneaking out the back door of the book store to avoid her constituents.

Any Senator who refuses to have a Townhall meeting on an issue as important as health care, needs to be VOTED OUT OF OFFICE!

wren on September 21, 2010 at 4:14 PM

go to . . . Paris, France. With your spouse. For a week.

This will be spun as Boxer being big on family values.

dirtseller on September 21, 2010 at 4:18 PM

The Aspen Institute was most often underwriting the cost of Boxer’s trips; in addition to the destinations above, the group covered the costs of Boxer’s trips to the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, the outdoor-sports resort town of Banff, Alberta, and Barcelona, Spain.

Who might they be? And what did Boxer do for them that they were willing to shell out close to 100k for her and her family?

..this and the “let the Dems win so they can own CA’s failure” mantra is beyond tedious. Live out here in California under the mantle of these idiot Democrats.

Also, Fiorina is a lot smarter than many give her credit for.

OK, this is petty, but I’m still so angry at her for dissing that military gentleman (a colonel IIRC) that I seriously plan to write her a letter repeatedly mocking her “Call me Senator” bit if and when this woman who purports to serve the US ever loses her “I deserve it for life” seat.
