Senate GOP to strip Murkowski of seniority on Energy committee

posted at 4:49 pm on September 21, 2010 by Allahpundit

It’d be nice to see her booted from the committee entirely — and while we’re at it, from Appropriations too — but the key is to make sure Alaska voters know she’ll no longer be in a position to deliver oil-related pork. If she wins, she starts fresh, no higher on the totem pole than Joe Miller would be. Mission accomplished.

Senate Republicans just said they will move tomorrow to strip Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, from her post as ranking Republican on the Senate Energy Committee.

Republicans say Wednesday they will vote to elect an acting ranking member and then the full GOP conference will ratify the vote…

Another Republican came out of the Senate GOP lunch and told CNN it was clear Murkowski has virtually no support among her colleagues anymore. That senator spoke on condition of anonymity, in order to speak freely about a private meeting.

Really? Not even from soon-to-be-independent Olympia Snowe? Or is she covered by that “virtually” qualifier?

Here’s Murky’s newest write-in ad, which is light-years better than last night’s fiasco. Her name’s spelled correctly and everything.

Sen. Murkowski is listening to the wrong trees. The right trees are telling her to make like a tree and LEAVE.

ANWR isn’t up at the moment for discussion. But I’m willing to venture that now that Ted Stevens and the entire Murkowski family are out of the picture, that ANWR will be a little bit easier to sell. Certainly, it will be less of a political football.

BradSchwartze on September 21, 2010 at 4:59 PM

I can’t get over the sense of entitlement from some of these people.

A rational person would be humbled and realize that they’ve failed their constituents, not try and keep the seat at all costs.

Asher on September 21, 2010 at 5:00 PM

Alaskans have spoken. How many times does she have to say that before it sinks through her thick skull that the primary was where their voices counted.

And she’s spit into the faces of those who participated in the primary and chose not to have her move forward to represent the GOP.

Her actions and inexcusable. Even for the cronies who feel entitled she’s crossed a line.

red hering. One senator can bring the entire senate to a close by not giving consent. And if the wave is as big as I think it will be the Senators that are left will walk softly until the new congress is seated. They will listen to the will of the people or the ads will start for 2012 on Nv 4th. We will not allow them to steal our country with midnight votes and latenight jokes…

as is WV. DE and WV. In fact I think that is one of the reason the establishment is tearing into O’donnell they had castle all line up to allow the obama agenda to pass in a lameduck session. now if they want it to pass some RINOs up for reelection in 2014 would have to go on record.

The Republicans should remove her from ALL of her Committee assignments immediately so she can’t vote any bad bills out of Committee during the lame duck session.
The Reublican leadership should also ask her to move to a small dark office in the basement, so that a real Republican can move into her current office.

Every tool to enforce Party discipline should be used in this case.

Strip her of her seniority?

Can’t they at least do the more sensitive thing recognizing her many years of loyalty to the party of occassional principle and give a full-fledged military style drumming out of the service? Have a John McCain or someone who’s occassionally principled do the honors of stripping off her hash marks. What a show that would be; maybe staving of any tea party take over until say, November.

Before the NSRC gives anyone any campaign money, they ought to get some sort of contract that says they’ll immediately and graciously accept the result of a primary vote and support the winner of such an election. If, during this election cycle and term, if they change parties, or run independent, they must immediately return all campaign donations accepted as a GOP candidate to the donors, spent or not. In other words, man up you moderates…

drfredc on September 21, 2010 at 10:32 PM

I called Murkowski’s office Monday and after politely asking her to drop her write-in campaign & the man who answered got very rude with me. I told him he was being rude to someone who paid his salary & he said he was “wealthier than” me. I asked his name & he hung up. Please get as many people to call Mukowski (202)224-6665 & if it happens to you when you call let me know & we’ll make this public!

margategop517 on September 22, 2010 at 2:45 AM

Don’t know if this has been mentioned, but this is a tactical error (unforced) with respect to the GOP caucus. After they do this to Murky, what incentive does she have to continue to even act like a republican, let alone a RINO? She will vote straight line with the dems, all the way through the lame duck session, giving dirty harry the 60th vote he needs. Game over on cap and tax folks.
