Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on September 21, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

The tagline on today’s post means “Don’t know much about history”, translated into Spanish by my good friend Val Prieto of Babalu Blog, and for a reason.  Going back once again to Barack Obama’s speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, it turns out that El Presidente offered another Obamateurism other than rewriting the Declaration of Independence.  Here is the clip again, and this time let’s focus on the beginning:

Let me close by saying this. Long before America was even an idea, this land of plenty was home to many peoples. The British and French, the Dutch and Spanish, to Mexicans, to countless Indian tribes. We all shared the same land.

Obama even emphasized the word Mexicans in his speech.  There’s only one problem with that statement: Mexico didn’t exist in 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was written, the earliest recorded moment of America being an idea.  Mexico didn’t exist in 1788, when the US wrote its Constitution, or 1789, when George Washington became our first President.  In fact, Mexico didn’t exist at all until 1821, when the colony that had been known as New Spain declared its own independence.  Before that, the area was populated with … Spaniards and countless Indian tribes.

The White House may have wanted to lecture Americans on our history, but it would have more impact if we had a President that studied it and a White House that could properly research and fact-check a presidential speech.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me atobamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Talk about cruel and unusual punished– making us listen to the same blow-hard speech two days in a row.

Did O mean to say that people from India were here before Americas was an idea, or is he actually being Un-PC and calling native Americans Indians?

They all look alike to PBHO.

You know, I wondered about this one.

I can hear the liberal response in my head: “Oh WHATEVER. You know what he meant: people of Spanish and Indian descent, living in the Southwest.” Which, translated, means: Getting history correct is less important than making a political POINT. And showing that you’re sensitive or something.

kiltedscotsman5 on September 21, 2010 at 8:13 AM

I have said it before, and I will continue to say it in the future, no matter where Obama was born, he is not an American and he will never be one.

I dont think it was a mistake or lack of research. It was pandering pure and simple, so the historical facts did not matter.

jwolf on September 21, 2010 at 8:11 AM

Sadly true. Mexico has been lying for years about how the U.S. “stole” American territory from it. And dumbass libs like Barry Obama, always eager to push the narrative of evil white imperialist Americans ruthlessly oppressing helpless brown people, are more than happy to perpetuate the myth.

AZCoyote on September 21, 2010 at 8:48 AM

I don’t know that “we” shared much of anything back then.

Before “America was even an idea”, life was brutish and short.

If you didn’t die from a disease, you died in an Indian attack (even if you were an Indian), exposure, from starvation or being eaten by bears.

And that’s if you survived being born.

This land was settled by people either motivated enough or oppressed enough to get off their asses and leave Europe.

Perhaps Kenyan-Indonesians don’t quite understand that.

What they very much want to forget is that Spanish is spoken in Mexico because the Conquistadors–the conquerors–came to get Gold and Glory for Spain, bringing with them the Spanish priests to convert the “heathen natives” to God. They decimated and enslaved the indigenous population. Since they came as conquerors, not as settlers, they did not bring very many women with them. They took native women, often by force, leaving them behind when they returned to their wives and families in Spain. When the US became an idea was no Mexico to be proud of then–just a subjugated people who were used to enrich the Spanish.

“Long before America was even an idea …”

What, the 2.1 million colonists that lived here had no idea about it? If it wasn’t even an idea, never mind dry land, what were the 10s of millions of indians living on?

I’m pretty sure people suspected America existed. Now, if he’d said ‘The United States’ I’d agree. I suppose most people see that as interchangeable, but for some reason this construction irks me.

Not to mention that Spanish is just another language forced upon a people by a conquering European power. One that was far more brutal than the English. Mexico is simply a construct of the same ‘imperialism’ that seems to offend the La Rasa people when it comes to English ‘imperialism’. Why aren’t they advocating for speaking TRUE native languages, like Mayan?

Speaking of Mexico,

How many fellow readers/commenters here have enjoyed Isla del Cosumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico, in the Western Caribbean near the Yucatan Peninsula?

Very beautiful, great for snorkelling and SCUBA diving. A sea and under water world lover’s delight, with the second largest coral reef in the world, Palancar Reef, extending Southwest from Cozumel toward the country of Belize.

The water is so clear that you can float a dime down to 100 feet and still clearly see that dime. There are so many beautiful, colorful sea creatures, coral, etc., that one might become Mesmerized at the view!

Nos vemos.
