Rasmussen: Voters feel closer to Palin than Obama, 52/40
posted at 12:55 pm on September 20, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
And it’s not even particularly close. In a revealing portrait of likely voters in this midterm cycle, a majority of respondents to Rasmussen’s survey say that Sarah Palin more closely represents their point of view than does Barack Obama. The man who won the 2008 presidential election, on the other hand, only resonates with four in ten likely voters:
Fifty-two percent (52%) of Likely U.S. Voters say their own views are closer to Sarah Palin’s than they are to President Obama’s, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.
Just 40% say their views are closer to the president’s than to those of the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate.
Among the Political Class, however, 68% say their views are more like Obama’s, while 63% of Mainstream voters describe their views as more like Palin’s.
Interestingly, in the same survey, Palin only gets a 48% favorable rating, with a 49% unfavorable rating. That seems to indicate that while some voters think she represents their values, they may not be as supportive of her as a candidate. Similarly, respondents are almost exactly split on whether Palin is good for the GOP, 40/39, with 20% unsure. They’re also somewhat less likely to vote for a candidate endorsed by Palin (27%) than to support one endorsed by her (16%), with 55% saying it makes no difference.
However, on values, Palin clearly comes up aces against Obama. She beats Obama among both men (55/37) and women (48/43). She has majorities in every age demographic, even an 18-point majority among Obama’s core constituency of college-age voters (18-29YO, 52/34). Fourteen percent of Democrats choose Palin, and she wins handily among independents by more than 2-1, 59/27. She only loses in two income categories, both by pluralities: under $20K (40/42), and $60-75K (41/49).
How’s that Hopey Changey thing working out for Barack Obama? Apparently, rather poorly. As long as Palin’s on the stump — and she has been constantly in the public eye — she appears to trump Obama handily.

Yeah, I know, a ‘moderate’ is whoever MSM tells us it is. And who MSM decides to tag as ‘moderate’ is determined by who they want to tag as extremist.
That’s why I wish our guys would stop using ‘moderate’ to describe members of their own party. The clear implication is that the rest are extreme.
“Moderate Dems” — okay.
“Moderate Repubs” — no way.
“MOR (Middle-of-road) Repubs” — better.

How do they think she won in AK. If Palin runs I wouldn’t be surprised if she knows every republican in IW personally by the time the election is held…

Part of it likely comes from blacks who feel constrained to vote for Obama no matter what…or at least until he’s impeached for espionage or convicted of a violent crime. And even then they’d argue that he was railroaded. If Obama were white, he’d probably still be holding only half of the black vote.

If you’re sincere in your apprehension, you really don’t need to go to a lot of trouble to find out how she governed and what she accomplished. Why wait for the media to tell you that? If you want to wait until she declares, I bet she’ll be talking about her actual accomplishments and how she would govern as Prez.

Remember, ‘polarizing’ only means one thing: it means libs/msm don’t like it.
If 70% are against something and 20-30% are for it, as long as that minority is the lib/msm – then somehow the issue is polarizing. If the majority was with the lib/msm, you would never hear about a polarizing issue because they would just stomp on the minority view.

Well you said this:
My response to that is that’s the point of a campaign. She’ll have the opportunity and responsibility to show who she is and what vision she has for America. She’ll have the chance to change people’s minds and get people to see her in her own light rather than the one the left and the media (BIRM) paint her in.
For some reason, I’ve seen some folks who post like politics are static…that because her numbers are X at a given point, that she cannot possibly recover. And my answer to that is what I said to you. That’s what a campaign is for.

It’s always a double standard with the Obama knee pad brigade otherwise known as the lame stream media. These examples you all cited are results of the freezing/polarizing tactics used by the left for all their political opponents. All I can say is until someone looks into Obama’s, HRC’s, Ted Kennedy’s, etc backgrounds, this minor stuff they can pin on Sarah Palin is just that, small potatoes. I mean, it’s not like she spent 20 years in a black liberation theology church, may possibly have been born in Kenya (we’ll never know b/c there is no birth certificate). Has a marxist background and the only experience she had was as a thug Chicago community organizer before being elevated to the senate. Furthermore, I’d like to see more mainstream media coverage of the Cloward and Piven strategy. Hopefully that will air on HBO soon. I’ll set my tivo for it.

petefrt on September 20, 2010 at 2:17 PM
Palin’s biggest problem is not her views. Her views make sense to people, when they get to actually hear them out. Her biggest problem, I think, is that she has a voice that grates of a lot of people’s (read: my) nerves, she has horrible pacing problems when she speaks (she sounds almost like she’s reading even when she isn’t), and when she talks it sounds like she is trying to make a soundbite point rather than a thoughtful, substantive one.
If she could learn to strike her Facebook tone while actually speaking, she would do well.

Absolutely fascinating survey results!
Contrast all these Palin positive figures to those around the time of the election, just before and also after defeat.
WITHIN OBAMA’S FIRST TWO YEARS, AMERICA HAS DONE AN ABOUT FACE IN WHO WINS SUPPORT. And as with other conservatives, I’ll point out that we voted for VP Palin on the ticket rather than obtuse RINO McCain, Palin the only one on the GOP ticket who actually campaigned against Obama. McCain endorsed Obama as a totally respectable and honest senator full of integrity, not to be feared for any political reason.
And Palin just got her wheels rolling. Imagine what she’ll have ready in another year. She’s amazing, to see how far she’s come gaining political savvy. It came after she shed McCain, and he finally had to admit that she was an extraordinary politician, as he crawled back to ask for her help in his re-election as AZ senator. Pfff

It seems that more than half the nation believe in WHAT Sarah Palin believes in, but less than half (right now) believe that she can lead the nation. There are evidently some voters who think that she SAYS the right things, but may not be able to DO what she says.
Part of this may be some leftover doubts about her knowledge due to the failed interview with Katie Couric, or her willingness to get the job done under pressure after her resignation as Governor of Alaska, which some voters may perceive as a “sellout” to make money on books and speeches rather than doing the job she was elected to do. Part of this may be the flak she is getting from the tabloid / gossip-mongering media focused on the latest juicy tidbit from wannabe First Son-in-Law @$$hole in Chief Levi Johnston, but his credibility is probably on the wane.
Still, a -1 net favorability rating is a LOT better than she was last year, and she still has two years to work her way into positive territory. For now, she is a kingmaker or queenmaker for other candidates–let’s see how many of them are elected in the general election!

The RNC sent out a fundraising letter from Palin and a fundraising email from Steele claiming Palin is Steele’s friend – When they want to raise money they invoke Palin. Just like they invoke Reagan. Interesting.
After Nov. 2nd – People will start to pay attention to the Presidential election, and once they do, I’m sure more than 52% will be closer to her in their views.

A 48F and a 49 UF among LIKELY voters is extraordinary imho when you think about how polarizing Palin is supposed to be. But even more extraordinary is that she is given the thumbs up by 52% of independent voters.
In contrast many polls like PPP and Quinnpiac have shown her numbers recently with indie voters in the low 30′s.
technopeasant on September 20, 2010 at 2:42 PM
I’m not sure what you mean by this. I kind of sense you’re tap-dancing around an issue like gay marriage, but I would not define that in terms of “morality” so much as it is an equal rights debate.
And I support the conservative platform on those issues. Which is why I’ve found the “true conservative” diktat to purge “moderates” so bewildering. I’m not going to stand in the way of getting a more fiscally conservative government to reverse the damage of the last four years (since Dems took control in ’06).
In what ways? I’m not being snarky, legit question. I can’t imagine that my support for, for example, gay marriage is contributing to that much of the budget. Are you talking about social welfare initiatives? I don’t support social welfare.
I suspect there’s far more common ground between us on the issues than you realize. I don’t support Obama. I didn’t vote for him. I never will. To make something of a topical reference, I wouldn’t elect him dogcatcher.

Coons really is the BEST opponent she could ever have wished for, given how HIGH he has raised taxes in his current position, how vindictive he is to anyone with criticism, and that he is an avowed activist for Marxist black liberation theology to rule government with warped socialist justice.
For voters who can’t follow a train of thought, all she needs to advertise is that she will vote AGAINST tax hikes beginning with Cap and Trade, whereas Coons will obligate tax payers to twice the national debt that Obama has already accumulated all on his own.

unseen on September 20, 2010 at 2:58 PM
eh? Tap dancing? No … society has always determined what is “moral”. Now the government has stepped in to tell us what they think is moral. We can’t decide for ourselves.
That said, “morality” in the United States would vary depending on where you lived. A small town in Montana may frown upon certain behaviors while anything goes in San Franciso. Localities and states would determine their own laws, or lack of laws. Smoke pot in one state and not in another. Get an abortion in one state and not in another. Of course a series of judicial rulings has slowly but surely taken morality from society into the hands of the federal government. Only they can tell you what you must like and not like.
Look, moderates in Congress and local government have been nothing more than democrat lackeys. It’s the so-called moderates that give the passing votes to democrats. If you’re going to vote with democrats run as a democrat, not Republican.
Social issues encompass welfare and other issues. In my book, liberty means liberty and it also means society as a whole determines morals. That means locally and state by state. People should have a right to pursue life liberty and happiness, but in the same vein your pursuit shouldn’t infringe upon others. That’s why a state by state solution is best in my book.
Of course there’s common ground.

Courtesy of Aron Goldman over at Rightosphere here is a further breakdown on Palin’s F/UF and also a comparison between PPP’s numbers in Sept, Quinnpiac this month and finally Rasmussen in mid-November 2009:
PPP QUINN RASM SEPT 10 RASM NOV 09
OVERALL 38/52 31/50 48/49 51/43
MODER 20/70 — 30/64 33/63
CONSERV 73/18 — 72/26 76/19
WOMEN 37/56 28/53 44/52 –
MEN 41/48 35/47 54/46 –
DEMS 9/87 8/71 18/77 25/67
GOP 69/18 61/22 76/22 80/18
INDIES 34/58 29/56 52/47 55/43
COMMENT:
1)Clearly the widest discrepancy is among the breakdown of the independent vote among PPP and Q vs Rasmussen. By the way PPP and Q both use registered voters as a model while Rasmussen polls likely voters. Even with a different model, somebody is lying here. PPP and Q would have you believe that Palin is extremely polarizing due to not being attractive to indies while Rasmussen is showing Palin doing way better among indies than Obama who is polling at around 40% with indies in his job approval.
2)Therefore based on the Rasmussen poll released today Sarah Palin is no longer UNELECTABLE.

I remember what a wise man once told me when I made a suggestion to him about his business. He told me that if I was so smart then I should go open up one of my own.
Vyce, instead of talking about having a candidate like Joe Miller or Marco Rubio, why don’t you go find people like that and get them to run for office? If all else fails you could try to BE a candidate like Joe Miller or Marco Rubio and go run for office.
Like it or not, The PEOPLE voted for O’Donnell. If you cannot support that decision then please do STOP assisting Reid’s candidate who is now known as, “Reids Pet“.
Those that can, do. Those who cannot should STFU, but that is just my opinion. ;o)

Technopeasant, first off, who paid to have those polls done? Second, what were their sampling numbers based on? Do they believe that 50% of Americans are democrats today?
Why is it that so many of the Candidates Sarah supports tend to win their primaries? Perhaps Sarah is not as unelectable as some would like to believe.

God, what a terrible thought. For all involved.
Although I live in NoVa, so a Chamberlain-esque RINO candy-ass like me could conceivably get elected here.

Yep, she proven she’s a really quick study. I love what I see in her, but I do agree with others here that she could benefit from a little lowering of the pitch on her voice… and even a little public speaking coaching too. It’s not that she not good at it, but that she could use more versatility of style.

If Christine wants to fly this coming Haloween night, she’ll need to borrow a broom from Hillary.
Or a Magic Carpet from Iamam Øbama.

From the Runner’s World interview, August 09′
