Hmmm: Castle took calls from Obama and Biden after losing

posted at 5:02 pm on September 16, 2010 by Allahpundit

The boss emeritus threw a jolt into the blogosphere by flagging this last night, and with good reason. Is America’s new most famous RINO about to go fully rogue and endorse Coons?

No. Or should I say, not yet?

Castle has spent the past 36 hours fielding phone calls and pats on the back from well-wishing colleagues and other politicians, including President Obama, Vice President Biden, House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and dozens of others. He said that he was coming to grips with the reasons for his defeat – a conservative rebellion in the southern portion of the state that was given extra ammunition by Sarah Palin’s endorsement of O’Donnell. But he said that there probably wasn’t enough time in the next six weeks for him to get over some of the attacks lobbed in the contest.

“There are a lot of personal feelings in all this,” Castle said in an interview off the House floor, citing “some of the personal smears” in the bitterly fought campaign. “At this point I have no intention of endorsing.”

He ruled out supporting the Democratic nominee, New Castle County Executive Christopher Coons, suggesting that he will remain neutral in the run for Senate.

He’s not as neutral as he’d like you to think: According to Ben Smith, his campaign team was still sending out anti-O’Donnell e-mails a day after the election. Very lame. And speaking of lame, here’s Delaware GOP chairman Tom Ross calling for unity — after having infamously said of O’Donnell a few days before the election, “She could not be elected dog catcher.” If you want to throw roundhouses, Tom, be a pundit, not a politico. Oh well. Ross says he’d like to remain a politico:

“Tuesday night, Delaware Republicans came out in large numbers to nominate candidates across the state to bring prosperity and accountability to Washington and Dover. After a hard fought primary it is time to come together and unite over our shared principles and determination to rescue our economy from the destructive policies advanced by Democrats.”

“The Delaware Republican Party plans on doing what it does every election year – working hard for our candidates. We have reached out to the NRSC, NRCC, and RNC to ensure that our candidates have as much support as possible. The winds of change are blowing hard in Delaware and together we can take our state and country back. I will honor my commitment to our party’s grassroots activists and continue to serve as Chairman of the Republican Party of Delaware.”

Whether the party’s grassroots activists, most of whom assuredly supported O’Donnell, want him to stay is up to them. But even as a guy who grudgingly backed Castle, I’d want him out for being a horrible strategist. It’s one thing for the state party to back a candidate because they think the other can’t possibly win, but to gratuitously alienate one side’s supporters with “dog catcher” rhetoric when you know you’ll need them for the general? By doing that, this guy might have blown the seat for the GOP even if Castle had won. Why keep him?

As expected, Biden’s already making plans to campaign for Coons inside the state. I wonder if that was going to happen all along or if the Dems are suddenly worried about O’Donnell’s fundraising bonanza yesterday. In the course of one day, she’s basically pulled even with him in terms of money in the bank, and given the grassroots enthusiasm for her, she may very well end up out-earning. That’s wonderful news no matter who ends up taking the seat because the Dems are going to have to spend money now, if only to ensure that a comfortable lead remains comfortable. (In fact, they’ve already announced their first ad buy in the area.) More money spent on Coons means less money spent everywhere else; Democrats would counter that that’s also true of grassroots righties donating to O’Donnell, but I’m not so sure. I suspect a fair number of them were never planning to donate to anyone but are so excited by her win that they’re digging deep — and, now that they’re in the habit, they may dig deep for other candidates too. Having Biden campaign for Coons is a cheap counter to her money advantage because it’ll attract “earned media,” a.k.a. news coverage, that the campaign doesn’t spend a dime on. Can’t wait to see what the polls look like in, say, two weeks.

Update: Sounding more like Dennis Hopper than ever, our vice president previews his stump speech:

On the heels of Christine O’Donnell’s primary win in Delaware Tuesday, Vice President Biden tonight had a straightforward message to progressives: “Get in gear, man.”…

“I think it’s time for our base to say, ‘Hey man, take a look. This opposition is for real,’” he said.

The Republican “establishment” has been so silly that if any of them go to Delaware it will be equal “free” news coverage. I can’t get excited about the calls, Rep. Castle was a friendly opponent to Obama, I am sure he will miss him, and Biden is from Delaware, it would be rude of him to ignore Rep. Castle service to the state.

This behavior is truly what Palin called it….the ego of a machine.

He was, like Crist and Lisa M., surprised. And these people so missed the message, so underestimated, that they are still furious.

You can see it in their behavior. Lisa M. is considering a write-in candidacy. What in the world?

Despite the rancor and the imperfections, O’Donnell is a happy warrior. I think that’s helping her. And if I’m not mistaken, she immediately ran the gantlet of morning shows Wednesday morning.

While everyone is eager to dump on O’Donnell, when do the sights and barrells get trained on Coons? What little I’ve heard of him, he’s got nothing going for him.

One more thing. Dems may be snickering over O’Donnell, but let’s not forget that the Dems previously lowered the bar for senatorial candidates to a subterranean level–Alvin Greene.

BuckeyeSam on September 16, 2010 at 5:14 PM

He’s not as neutral as he’d like you to think: According to Ben Smith, his campaign team was still sending out anti-O’Donnell e-mails a day after the election.

That’s not Castle, though. Campaign teams are often made up of twenty-something Roves-in-training who devolve into juvenile behavior after a loss. Anybody remember campaign 2008?

Sounds like Castle’s feelings are hurt but he’s not going to be a Charlie Crist or even a Lisa Murkowski. Good.

joe_doufu on September 16, 2010 at 5:15 PM

Why aren’t the GOP establishment folks reining in their own ilk on these primaries? They are totally ruining the chances of candidates with all this trash campaign talk.

This is THEIR base. What in the world? If they can’t figure this simple thing out, why would we think they could figure out what to do if they DID get power back?

It’s Biden’s homestate. He likely planned to campaign all along. He’d be politically reckless not to.

In the course of one day, she’s basically pulled even with him in terms of money in the bank, and given the grassroots enthusiasm for her, she may very well end up out-earning.

Yesterday she pulled even with his total as of 8/25 — weeks ago. Who knows what he has in the bank now.

You can donate to guys like Michael Bennett in CO if you think that jerk-off is fit enough for you. She will get a little crash course coaching in the next two-three weeks if she it smart and she will be just fine.

Scott H on September 16, 2010 at 5:20 PM

No it’s the end – if we get these Senators through the General with wins – they go to Capital Hill and vote the Establishment out of their positions of leadership.

Why do you think the Establishment is undermining these candidates even after they’ve won their primaries fair and square?

It’s because Mitch McConnell knows he loses his leadership post – as does Cornyn and the rest of the establishment.

They’re toast though – if all (or most) of our candidates win. DeMint will cradle them up in his arms and take down these foolish Ayatollahs.

Fallon on September 16, 2010 at 5:28 PM

Honda: That is entirely too optimistic. Term limits would help, but that’s because of the disease.

Don’t get cocky. This will definitely be a blow, but I _do_ agree with the ‘moderates’ here that we will always have squishy members with us. If nothing else, if the ‘average conservativeness’ increases with this election, then a new definition of RINO emerges.

As long as we make them toe the line where it counts, electoral strategies work. That’s broken, and replacing the leadership is the first step to fixing that.

But don’t ever believe that power doesn’t corrupt. And, unfortunately, the idea that ‘this will decide things’ seems to ignore this adage.

RINOs are just fine when they play by the party rules. There’s a place for them, though I’d like to think that it doesn’t extend so far as voting the warmist line.

JEM on September 16, 2010 at 5:30 PM

There’s a place for them? Yeah … with the democrats. Why is there a place in the Republican party for people that stab you in the back?

Obama lost his best Mole.

TheBigOldDog on September 16, 2010 at 5:33 PM

Heard someone from DE call in today with another twist on this story. He claims that Castle was only going to be a seat holder for Beau Biden until he gets his creds up to snuff by being the AG for a few years. Since when did the dems worry about creds? The leader of their party doesn’t have any yet.

Kissmygrits on September 16, 2010 at 5:34 PM

It’s becoming very, very obvious that the GOP establishment really does need to go. They have lost their bearings.

AnninCA on September 16, 2010

I think that process is well under way now.

Of coarse. Makes perfect sense. You get the best of both worlds, a Dem calling himself a Republican to keep the seat warm and leave when told. No having to worry about a Democrat incumbent. Looks like Rove was even up for the plan.

Nice system we’ve built here.

It’s good to see the Delaware GOP coming around…

Oh. Wait. Maybe not so much:

It had something to do with a child molester case while he was AG, IIRC.

Not sure of the details.

And when the GOP establishment is pushed out and the ‘Young Guns” have control, including SCOTUS picks, what do you think they will target???

Can you guess or do you need a hint?

sharrukin on September 16, 2010 at 5:39 PM

By doing that, this guy might have blown the seat for the GOP even if Castle had won. Why keep him?

Exactly, if that wanker worked for me he’d be out the door in a heartbeat. He too is a classic example of what’s wrong with the status quo – these people must be flushed – the new blood is pounding on the door, won’t be denied, and offer an opportunity to rid ourselves of the corruption that also has become the status quo. . . .

I thought it was hillarious to see the ruling Republican RINOS all out smiling and waving when the TEA Party first came to town, ready to take their dollars and their votes. With really no clue as to what was really happening. Now the look of surprise and school girl tantrum throwing as they get tossed out of primaries that were supposed to be handed to them is priceless.
And they STILL dont get what its all about.

Makes sense. Castle is 72 years, and would probably not run for another term. And he is personally close to Biden, as most of these political families in Northern Delaware.

Glad to have gotten this crony out of the way.

O’Donnell is not fit to be senator.

As far as I’m aware she hasn’t driven drunk off a bridge and left someone to drown, nor was arrested in an nternational airport for trying to hookup with a homosexual, nor committed adultery while their spouse was dying of cancer, nor had a sweet deal with a lending agency because of a position on a banking committee, nor…

sicoit on September 16, 2010 at 5:51 PM

I wonder if that was going to happen all along or if the Dems are suddenly worried about O’Donnell’s fundraising bonanza yesterday.

Well, they’re obviously scared of something in Delaware. Remember, this seat was “lost” by the democrats the moment Mike Castle entered the race. No way were they going to spend money on Coons when Castle was everything they wanted in a candidate. This is a knee-jerk move which should tell every doubter about O’Donnell’s real chances in the coming weeks. I predict a single-digit lead, say 6 points, for Coons when the next poll comes out. (I hope SurveyUSA does the next poll).

SouthernGent on September 16, 2010 at 5:55 PM

Castle is a sore loser and the worst kind of RINO. The only benefit having him in the senate is that he would be probably supporting Republicans for committee chairs. O’Donnell has problems, but it is still a while before the elections. She may improve, but I admit she is a long shot.

simkeith on September 16, 2010 at 5:56 PM

Coon’s went to Kenya to learn???? As Glenn is now saying, WATCH THE OTHER HAND. Rush also said on his program today about Rush’s rule, if a liberal and a RINO and a conservative are running, vote for the conservative. Yep

sicoit on September 16, 2010 at 5:57 PM

How cool would it be for Karl Rove to slip over to DE for a grin and grip session along with OD as she makes the rounds? Or, if that doesn’t fit as a consultant, just a nice, well publicized meal on the campaign trail.:) It would make Gibbsy’s neck swell out over his collar.

Castle’s endorsement is not to be desired. He is toxic now. He, like Murkowski, Crist, and Specter have had the light shone on them and they revealed their true cockroach characters.

Biden’s endorsement … now that’s harder to say. It could help Coons, could hurt. But I pray that Castle endorses Coons. Rub a little stink that way.
