Marked for death: Artist behind “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” forced to change identity

posted at 7:59 pm on September 15, 2010 by Allahpundit

Remember, after her idea took off online, so frantically worried was she about her offense to jihadis that she apologized for it and distanced herself from any participation. Too late, alas. The lesson: Appeasement after the fact of the insult won’t work. Actually, appeasement before the fact won’t work either. If it did, Terry Jones’s non-burning of the Koran wouldn’t be part of Khamenei’s weekly Two Minutes Hate and it wouldn’t have already been the pretext for a body count in Afghanistan. But then, that’s how self-censorship progresses. Whereas before you were apt to get stabbed for drawing Mohammed cartoons, now you’re apt to get stabbed for suggesting (then retracting) that Mohammed cartoons should be drawn.

Question for Obama: If Terry Jones was endangering the troops by burning the Koran, then presumably Molly Norris is to blame for the threats against her, right?

The gifted artist is alive and well, thankfully. But on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, “going ghost”: moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity. She will no longer be publishing cartoons in our paper or in City Arts magazine, where she has been a regular contributor. She is, in effect, being put into a witness-protection program—except, as she notes, without the government picking up the tab. It’s all because of the appalling fatwa issued against her this summer, following her infamous “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” cartoon.

Norris views the situation with her customary sense of the world’s complexity, and absurdity. When FBI agents, on a recent visit, instructed her to always keep watch for anyone following her, she responded, “Well, at least it’ll keep me from being so self-involved!” It was, she says, the first time the agents managed a smile. She likens the situation to cancer—it might basically be nothing, it might be urgent and serious, it might go away and never return, or it might pop up again when she least expects it.

As I acknowledged during Koran-apalooza last week, it’s a fine line between Jones’s stunt (which I opposed) and “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” (which I supported). One of the reasons I look dimly on dopey atheist gags like erecting “Secular Trees” next to Christmas trees on public squares is because the offense to Christians seems gratuitous. Sure, they’re making a point about religion in the process, but they’re doing it in a way that looks like mockery, calculated to annoy. They have the right, but why alienate people with a taunt? That’s what Jones’s stunt seemed like to me — not so much a message to jihadis, even though he tried to frame it that way at times, but something aimed at provoking all Muslims, a group that includes people like Zuhdi Jasser. EDM Day wasn’t aimed at all Muslims, though. Some moderates were bound to take offense, but the point of the day was to push back against the sort of jihadis who’ve now forced Norris into hiding. Intent and intimidation do count here; if Christian fundies were threatening to kill atheists over “Secular Trees,” my calculations would change accordingly. But either way, there simply must be space for this sort of offense in public debate. I’m open to drawing the line in a slightly different place, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.

Well it seems those misunderstanders of the Religion of Peace are at it again.

Actually, appeasement before the fact won’t work either.

Silence and submission are what works.

Fighting back works too, but it can get ugly.

There needs to be a counter-force.
Our government needs to assassinate those who call for the death of our citizens exercising their freedom of speech. A threat to one’s life is a threat to everyone’s freedom when it comes from Islam.

This dividing of Islam into “radical Islamists” and Islam is false, and takiya. As the Muslim Prime Minister of Turkey Recip Erdogan said angrily, there is no moderate or immoderate Islam. There is only Islam, that is it. He also said the distinction was insulting.

It’s things like this which destroyed my own belief. Atheists would be right alongside you in this battle if you weren’t so busy driving them away. If you want allies, GIVE THIS ATTACK ON ATHEISTS A REST. Quit demanding special respect or privileges for any religion; Islam will be destroyed if theocracy is criminalized, but Christianity will not. Purge religious dogma from public schools and public funding; Islam is a parasite and cannot survive without it, any more than Marxism can. And respect other people, inwardly as much as outwardly (in other words, exactly as an observant Muslim cannot do); atheists may be as mistaken as the observers of contrary sects, but that does not make them evil. If you want their support, don’t treat them that way.

Heckle on September 15, 2010 at 8:20 PM

I do not make the mistake of equating the nutcases in a group with the entire group. (hint, hint)

There is a wide gap between people like you and the fanatics who want every single religious reference eliminated, written and otherwise. It is one thing to not believe. It is quite another to try and legislate away the freedom of others to believe and to show their faith.

And on top of everything else, the rabid atheists are cowards. They specifically target groups who don’t or won’t hit back.

I’d like to see them march around a Middle East mosque, calling the worshipers there the same kind of vile names they do Christians. They won’t, of course, because in the back of their withered little minds is a functioning survival instinct.

Punditry about Islam is not allowed in Muslim countries. It figures therefore that someone who calls himself Allahpundit wouldn’t understand that Mohammed cartoons are a gratuitous insult (yes I agree that Mohammed was an evil man) but burning an evil book is not. Burning that evil book is a courageous rebuke of the contents of that evil book.

Since the contents of the evil book are largely unknown, they offending passages should be read before being ripped out and burned. This would serve the purpose of teaching the liberal public about Islam. Drawing cartoons of Mohammed is a gratuitous insult that serves no useful purpose.

Basilsbest on September 15, 2010 at 8:31 PM

Ftfy.

Imagine if prominent Jews suddenly declared that there should be no depictions of Moses, or the Pope announced that pictures of Mary were a no-no.

Non-believers would laugh their heads off and go out of their way to make fun of the moronic new ‘rule’. And they’d have every right to do so.

The only reason the “No-Mo” rule gets any respect is because of the cabal of goons who enforce it with bombs and gunfire. That tends to get people’s attention.

I think this thread went rather off the road by some going after atheists. Hopefully it will get back on the road and go in the correct direction.

Chuck Norris just glares at a Koran and it bursts into flame. Of course, the same thing happens if he glares at a Prius, or a fire hydrant…

Islam doesn’t believe in freedom of speech.

tinkerthinker on September 15, 2010 at 8:08 PM

And thus it doesn’t qualify for Freedom of Religion.

And, once again, Allahpundit misses the point, presuming that his favorite believer in the warlord Mohammad (pb&j) Zuhdi Jasser is a trustworthy moderate Muslim, but then assumes he would be insufferably offended if someone dared use their First Amendment right to express opposition to the MANY (sura 9:5; sura 9:29, et al ) malignant contents of the Koran by the political act of burning that unreformed, medieval al-Mein Kampf.

You can’t halve Freedom of Speech to purportedly placate the “moderates” (who you claim already appreciate and respect Freedom of Speech, which negates your point, on its own), since you defeat both freedom and moderation by such a un-thought-through proposal.

If Zuhdi were that offended by a non-violent expression of one of our Rights, then he doesn’t understand America’s rights and is also not to be trusted.

Civilized people laugh attempts to affront them, whether done by satirists or mere cranks, and not become uber-cranks in response.

As is the usual case with Islam.

Which Norris naively proved.

No Islam; know peace.

I gotta think that after the pronouncements about burning the koran not being protected speech that she is only a short step from being prosecuted for hate speech

billhedrick on September 15, 2010 at 8:43 PM

I can only speak for myself, of course, but I’m rather tired of the hair-splitting and nuance-hunting involved in the Koran-burning and Mohammed-cartooning discussion.

My take? We are Americans, yes? As an American, I advocate the exercise of anti-Islamic blasphemy on a grand scale. Everyone claiming citizenship in this great country–including American Muslims who claim to believe in the principles of free speech and expression–should hold a community Koran Burning Day or a Draw Mohammed event. The bonfires dotting the landscape should be able to be seen from space. The blasphemous cartoons should span deserts and fields and parking lots like Nazca lines. Let me put it this way: if Christians were putting out murder contracts on people who somehow offended their (and my) Christian faith, then I would stand with the blasphemous unbelievers, knowing it would be moral and right (and even Godly) that I do so.

That great woman Ayan Hirsi Ali talked about this, by the way, although more rationally and reasonably than I can muster. Under the threat of a fatwa herself, she said if enough people spoke up and spoke out against the issuing of death warrants Muslim clerics, then possibly, maybe, could be the more moderate elements of Islam would find the moral courage to speak out themselves and once and for all put an end to the more murderous aspects of their culture and their faith. Besides, the extremists who commit the killings would be literally swamped with fatwas. Who could keep up? Try as they might, they can’t murder the world–not until the Iranians finish building their stockpile, anyway.

Burn a koran THREATEN to burn a koran: Muslims threaten to kill people

Draw cartoons of Mohammed: Muslims threaten to kill people.

Remind me what the difference is, again?

This type of thing should not happen in America.

Islam does not teach the same sort of compassion for the other that virtually every other religion including today’s “secular humanism” teaches. Muslims murder and torture each other without compunction and their own ummah, “brotherhood” has no condemnation to offer. That’s because they don’t value individual human life the way Christian westerners do. It’s not a concept in Islam, which means it’s not a concept in Muslims “hearts and minds”. Their hearts and minds instead understand what Allah teaches them in the Koran, namely, the Collective Will to Power.

When will our leaders understand this? And moreover understand that it is necessary in the end to treat Muslims in the way they themselves understand moral principles? Which ultimately means that they must be beaten back and vanquished and humiliated by a greater strength.

That is clearly what they understand. Every move to win their hearts and minds only strengthens them, emboldens them to advance their own peculiar ethics of the world, which couldn’t give a damn about “hearts and minds”, as we understand the term. They will accept the shehada from anyone they can swindle and connive to recite it while at the same time are willing to kill anyone who leaves Islam. Whatever it takes to build the army of Islamic soldiers is what their ethics is about.

There is no way of avoiding the reality that the adults in this world are going to have to act like adults and step up and slap, and in a big way, Muslims who have made of their own societies the equivalent of “Lord of the Flies” and who now threaten to overrun every more advanced society with their mayhem.

We’re going to have to come to terms this reality. Either that or it’s simply going to be cruel for all of us, with no kindness in sight, and possibly no one left to come and rescue us off an Island from Hell that in our passivity and cowardice we allowed to be taken over by moral pygmies.

Here is the predicament in which we find ourselves. Our government has determined that we must fight this war against terror abroad (which is ostensibly a war against only Muslims because none of the terrorists we fight are not Muslims). We have chosen to fight this war by occupying foreign countries and trying to build a form of western style democracy with a middle eastern twist. We have chosen to stay and see this through.

Now regardless of whether you agree with this policy or not, it is the policy we have chosen. In order to be successful using this strategy, it REQUIRES the buy in, acceptance, and support of those within the country we occupy – which are all Muslims. Now, while we all love our free speech and ability to make fun of Mohammed or burn Qur’ans – it pisses off Muslims. And again, regardless of whether you think that it is ridiculous that we bend over backwards not to offend the most easily offended people in the world while they hurl excrement on us, it is nevertheless the way one must conduct business if you believe that we must be successful in Afghanistan or Iraq using our current strategy.

So the way I see it, we either continue to bend over backwards in an excrement shower, or we must change our strategy.

I’ve had the Muslim Cartoons posted on my website since mid 2007.
So far they have been viewed 8764 times. I’m glad to be of service.

I will never remove them. So, bring it on Jihadis. But make sure that you read up on the Arizona gun laws before you pull into the driveway, because it’s the last chance that you’ll get.

Drawing pictures of “that evil man,” which is a direct and blatant insult to Muslims is courageous, and NOT gratutitous, but burning the EVIL book that the same man wrote is “gratuitous?”

The two acts have essentially the same effect, insulting/offending Muslims, and inciting SOME to violence, but somehow the one act is “courageous” and the other is unacceptable? That’s some weird logic you’ve got going on there. I fail to see how anyone can honestly support one act and not the other.

JannyMae on September 15, 2010 at 8:53 PM

MadisonConservative on September 15, 2010 at 8:34 PM

Drawing cartoons of Mohammed trivializes the threat. It teaches us nothing about the evil Mohammed. Burning the evil Koran after reading the offending passages underlines why the Koran is a large part of the problem.

Basilsbest on September 15, 2010 at 8:56 PM

Face it, the reason people oppose the koran burning while supporting drawing Mohammed is becaus the latter is being done by secularists.

Where did I say that? They’re both gratuitous, both insulting, and both courageous(if done for the purposes of making a stand against Fundamentalist Islam, and not simply for shock value).

Improve your reading comprehension.
