Pastor: Now God’s telling me not to burn the Koran

posted at 12:10 pm on September 11, 2010 by Allahpundit

I hate to devote a post on a day as solemn as this to the Levi Johnston of fringe Christianity, but after three days of saturation press coverage, you deserve closure. So here’s the media’s man of the hour using the escape hatch that I and others expected he’d use: He says one of his goals all along was to remind people of how dangerous Islamic fundamentalists can be, and since that mission’s now been accomplished, there’s no need to actually light a match. As I write this, MSNBC is replaying footage from 9/11 of the World Trade Center collapsing; between that and the daily reports of troops killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan, I’m … pretty sure most people were going to get that reminder today anyway. As for the message he’s received from providence, I wonder: Will God be passing the same one along to the copycat Koran-burning preachers?

I think, wish, and hope that we’re done with this guy now, but one more note before we leave him for good. Jones didn’t expose anything about jihadism that we didn’t already know; what he did expose is how pathetic and sensationalistic the media can be (we knew that too, of course, but the sheer extent of it in this case is astounding) and how weak the government’s defense of free speech remains whenever jihadis start getting restless. Read Charles Lane’s withering indictment of Obama for more on that. How bad did it get? This bad:

According to officials familiar with the situation, the FBI visited Pastor Terry Jones several times. There is no law against what he wanted to do, they told him, but they were concerned about what might happen to HIM if he went ahead with his Koran Bonfire. They talked to him about being a potential target for violence and threats and told him the story of the Danish cartoonist and other people who have had their lives changed by making this kind of bold statement. They also told him they were concerned that civil rights violations and hate crimes might grow out of what he was planning to do and they wanted him to understand that.

Who among us hasn’t fantasized about federal agents knocking on the door to say, You don’t want to die, buddy, do you? This’ll be spun, I’m sure, as the feds merely being concerned for Jones’s welfare and wanting to make sure he wasn’t caught off-guard by the risks. But in practice they’re operating as emissaries for the same sort of scum who killed Theo Van Gogh. It’s intimidation by proxy, and the proxy is the FBI. And of course, it comes complete with a heavy-handed insinuation that if jihadis go nuts and commit, ahem, “hate crimes” over this — which they’re likely to do, notwithstanding the fact that the bonfire is off — then it’s really kinda sorta Jones’s fault, isn’t it? Repulsive.

So I am suppose to hate this guy because he laid bare the double standard practiced by the government and the media? I would never even think for burning a book but I can’t help but think there is a public service message being sent here that is being overlooked. What a shock!

Something tells me this “God” is in fact quite mortal, and has reminded him of that fact in explicit detail.

I said yesterday that Dr. Terry Jones was a courageous man.

Obviously I was wrong. It seems that today the lives of 3000 people are less valuable than a pedophile rantings.

Mark Scott was a strong voice for conservative talk radio on WXYT in Southfield, MI. Those of us who listened either loved him or hated him, sometimes both at the same time. We could never fault his love of America or his virtues of right and wrong.

That guy in Afghanistan who died over this is going to be very disappointed.

He forced a rectal temperature taken of the nation. Results….Pathetic Nervousnellism compounded by an infiltration induced delusions of a compatible islam.

Sooooooooo……Islam is a religion of peace.

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 11, 2010 at 12:23 PM

ReformedAndDangerous on September 11, 2010 at 12:30 PM

Well, bless his heart.*

I remain glad that he decided not to burn Korans. As for whether God will tell other prospective pastor-arsonists not to burn the Koran, half of the equation is listening, which is up to each individual.

With respect to all who have vigorously disagreed, this has been a fine example of the discord we sow for ourselves — forget the Muslim factor — when we insist on taking our stand primarily on the right to offend.

I’ve said elsewhere that whether an action will give offense should always be a secondary consideration, and I stand by that. If an action is necessary, then offense is regrettable but not a show-stopper.

If the action isn’t necessary, then you accomplish nothing by reasoning that, well, now we have to give offense, just to show we can.

Picking our battles for the right reasons is what’s important. Offense is secondary, and properly so, if we do that.

I didn’t need closure, I never paid attention. The media made this a story, the sycophants that they are to their liberal masters. Most pathetic part of this whole controversy was on the Morning Joe show when they had him on for an “interview”, had Jon Meacham make a sanctimonious plea to him not to do it in the name of the New Testament, and then cut connection with him not letting him respond. They used his presence to get ratings and attention, never had an interview, and patted each other on the back for telling him not to do it, it was disgusting.

petefrt on September 11, 2010 at 12:34 PM

Oh and whacko or not, he’s right, no other religion chills us to the bone the way the Islamic countries do over something so trivial. Make a film, get stabbed to death, draw a cartoon, watch mobs tear people to shreds, burn the Qu’uran…God knows what would have happened but we were all holding our breath. That is the real story here, that whatever moderates there are in Islam are scared out of their mind and intimidated into silence, even in “allied” Islamic nations like Saudi Arabia. Think the media will ever challenge the muslim world to get their **** together?

Daemonocracy on September 11, 2010 at 12:35 PM

While I think the guy probably is a kook most days, I actually think what he did exposed the double standards of our government and media. Apparently some people’s first amendment rights are more valuable than others. Apparently it is ok to dip Christ in urine but not burn a muslim book. Apparently a people professing adherence to a religion can make us do whatever they want or else people will die. This week has been rather instructive. Thank you Mr. Jones.

HawaiiLwyr on September 11, 2010 at 12:35 PM

Oh, and don’t forget our poor helpless troops. Think of all the lives he saved today!

July 10 on September 11, 2010 at 12:38 PM

This is the best view I’ve read on the subject yet, from a Christian perspective: http://bibchr.blogspot.com/2010/09/burning-quran-good-idea-bad-idea.html

For those not wanting to check out the link, basically the author states, after saying that part of him really likes the idea of burning the Koran as in-your-face-defiance, that the job of the Church is to preach the Gospel, not get involved in stunts like this. In fact, the best candidate for burning a Koran would be a converted-to-Christianity ex-Muslim. That would send a stronger message than “infidels” doing it.

theotherone on September 11, 2010 at 12:39 PM

From Lane’s article:

Instead, the president of the United States broadcast his fear that a U.S. citizen’s exercise of his liberty will provoke Muslim violence — without even calling upon Muslims to refrain from such attacks, much less declaring that they would be completely unjustified, and correspondingly resisted.

Worst of all, Obama set a precedent for presidentially-encouraged self-censorship based on the anticipated mood swings of mobs and fanatics.

Terry Jones created a bad situation; the president’s reaction may make it worse.

Indeed. We are becoming England where the indigenous culture is expected to remain silent, obedient and engage in self-flagellation at the very thought of expressing outrage over the encroachment on their culture and rights.

Burning the Koran, or any other book, would never occur to me, however, my initial repulsion with Jones is gone as I see what he accomplished. He exposed our government, the media and this administration for the cowards they are. Not only are they cowards, they are enablers of a sick ideology valuing their rights over those of regular Americans.

After 9/11 ordinary Americans were admonished to refrain from acts of retribution. After Ft. Hood the same occurred. We are constantly told to refrain from acts of violence that we never thought of enacting. At the same time we are told to stand silently by and respect diversity.

Jones made his point rather poignantly however ham-fisted it was. Instead of castigating Jones, I’m thankful that he demonstrated an important point.

faraway on September 11, 2010 at 12:25 PM

Among many other things.

If we’re afraid – including our Generals – of an American burning a book at home, then we’ve not only lost the battle, we’ve lost the war.

Dimitude is here. Islamic provocations like a celebratory mosque on ground zero are defended and allowed and centuries old rights of Americans are put down using the full force of the US Government all the way to the top.

If 9/11 failed to wake us up but instead made us accept dimitude then it’s over.

Nutjob, nut, whackjob, fool, idiot, hate-monger, sick, intolerant, sick, sicko, media whore, psycho, psychopath, sociopath, narcissistic, bigot … just for starters. The last time Muslims burned a Bible, how many Christians rioted or even threatened any Muslims? Or beheaded a Christian from another sect?

And how many MSM savants noted this?

John 2:13-16 (New International Version)

13When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”

Is this burning really unChristian? The book of Acts approvingly tells us that some early Christians, after converting, gathered to burn their pagan books for “all to see” as a public gesture. How is this different? Acts 19:19

tommyboy on September 11, 2010 at 1:08 PM

That was what the author I linked earlier to was covering. Basically, he stated that the ones who would have the most authority to burn the Koran are, in effect, ex-Muslims. Particularly those who have converted to Christ. I personally would include anyone who has permanently left Islam and its teachings.

Like the ones on this list: http://www.apostatesofislam.com/apostates.htm

theotherone on September 11, 2010 at 1:25 PM

If burning a Koran is so evil and un-American and un-Christain, not to mention offensive and intolerant – then why is it I shouldn’t feel the same way they do about Korans not getting burned when I see an american flag getting burned?

By not reacting as they do, aren’t I already acting tolerant and American and Christian, etc. proving the constant haranguing about needing to be what I am already demonstrating to be completely pointless?

Much more attention should have been paid to Imam Rauf for his threat that if the Cordoba Victory Ground Zero mosque is moved, then the Muslim world might explode. Thus, any propoaed plan to change the location, according to Rauf, is non-negotiable. That threat is much more dangerous. It demonstrates how much of a weasel Rauf is and how weak-kneed our leadership is.

I refuse to play the game of calling this atrocity Park 51. Even Rauf is calling the structure Cordoba House. Are we so easily pushed into PC in order to appease this slime?

The NY Post has a map of the area where bodies of the slaughtered have been found and their relation to the proposed site. “The Corner” links the information. Also, Andy McCarthy has an excellent column today, reinforcing the delusion of “moderate Islam.”

This Terry fellow made his point and exposed both media hypocrisy and government leadership hypocrisy and weakness. Even if the “stunt” was tasteless, Terry brought out in the open how little it takes to ignite the much more deranged Islamists.

Frankly, I don’t think that was the original intent. The guy isn’t that smart.

But you can’t argue with results and he’s taking credit for it now so he’s not too stupid…

catmman on September 11, 2010 at 1:31 PM

the president of the United States broadcast his fear that a U.S. citizen’s exercise of his liberty will provoke Muslim violence — without even calling upon Muslims to refrain from such attacks, much less declaring that they would be completely unjustified, and correspondingly resisted.

TheBigOldDog on September 11, 2010 at 1:31 PM

Jesus didn’t tolerate evil, he fought it. He would have destroyed every koran he came across, as it is the pagan word of evil – the very antithisis of His word:

Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!
Galatians 1:8-9 (New International Version)

Rebar on September 11, 2010 at 1:33 PM

To me he seems like a normal lovable old man. He’s not a crazy ideologue who speaks softly but has burning hate in his eyes. I think he was really naive about what he was getting himself into, but he is no kook. If you hear him speak through all his interviews he never categorically condemns the whole of Islam or wants to convert all Muslims to Christianity or other extremist things such as Fred Phelps would do. (The 2 groups had cooperated before apparently, but to what extent?) He’s fine with mosque building in America, he’s fine with most Muslims, his only beef was the GZM, violent jihad, and things such as stonings.

His line “Islam is of the devil” a few months ago, I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he was talking about the nutjobs, not regular American Muslims.

As for jihadis getting restless, the usual suspects got restless, and nobody really cared. Iranian shiiteheads spewed the regular BS which was quite amusing but only made me yawn, I haven’t heard a peep out of the Saudis, and one relatively small riot in Afghanistan. But it was nothing like public death threats to the South Park people or what happened during the Danish Cartoons saga.

The real cause of the cancellation is not the jihadis’ restlessness, it’s westerners self censorship in being intimidated about POTENTIAL restlessness based on previous occasions, and the real victimization of normal Muslims for whom I have the utmost empathy as a Jew (in this particular case).

Give Grampa Simpson a break here.

Has anyone wondered what the correct way to dispose of a koran is? Why burning of course, or you can eat it.

What’s the Proper Way to Dispose of a Koran?

slickwillie2001 on September 11, 2010 at 1:44 PM

In fact, the best candidate for burning a Koran would be a converted-to-Christianity ex-Muslim. That would send a stronger message than “infidels” doing it.

theotherone on September 11, 2010 at 12:39 PM

The publicity stunt of all time would be a mass, public baptism of former Muslims.

TexasDan on September 11, 2010 at 1:47 PM

I wonder which one of the Lame Streamers will be the first to ask Terry Jones if Rush Limbaugh put him up to this stunt?

Dire Straits on September 11, 2010 at 1:49 PM

Didn’t Obama tell us that all religions must be respected? Like it or not, that would apply to Quran burnin’ Pastor Terry Jones.

Islam demands that infidels be murdered, Muslims used the Bible for toilet paper and our own troops burned the Afghanistan translated bibles be causes they offended Muslims but now this peanut of a pastor has become the face of evil, in spite of the fact that he has decided against burning the Quran.

Non-violent Christians bad. Islamic fascists and those who burn the Bible good. Amazing.

–No one was endangered by that act.
–No books burned then were considered sacred.
–They were making a statement of conversion from witchcraft to Christianity, not being provocative for its own sake.

itsnotaboutme on September 11, 2010 at 2:06 PM

Also, how is the guy “fringe”?

DethMetalCookieMonst on September 11, 2010 at 12:23 PM

He’s “fringe” because the majority of churches in America are not Mega-Churches but small churches several less than 150 people.

Small churches are not filled with people who are Media whores, instigators, or pick unnecessary fights with other religions. They are filled with people who choose to help out their community doing volunteer work & providing for those in need in the community. They help out their chosen missionaries in foreign lands. Exhibiting Christ in love not hate and stupidity. Not saying that there are several Christians who aren’t stupid but in general if I were to take a large number of pastors from small churches none would look like this kook.

Repulsive.

Now that the jihadies have successfully used FBI as their
“muscle men”
will FBI be doing more such jobs , ie working as rented thugs for jihadies ?
I would have respected Obama’s Bin Lyin if he had used FBI and LEA to protect the rights of Terry Jones, INSPITE of not supporting him personally.

I think, wish, and hope that we’re done with this guy now, but one more note before we leave him for good.

..he joins the category of those who have overstayed their 15 minutes along with such notables as Cindy Sheehan, Shirley Sherrod, Bill Clinton, Michael Moore, and Barack Obama after he gets voted out in 2012.

The War Planner on September 11, 2010 at 2:35 PM

Why wouldn’t any attention-wanting kook want to do the same? Scream you are going to burn the Koran and even the President will even talk about you on national TV.

Now that the press and the President have been scammed by this never was going to burn a Koran, flim-flam man bet there could be lots of Koran burning going on and it will be now be ignored by the media and the President.

Here is a “nobody” who has made fools out of the President and the government officials who begged him not to burn the Quran. He still continues to play the media like a drum. Many may say that this guy is an idiot and they are correct but the President,FBI,Secretary of Defense and Gen. Petraeus are the bigger idiots cowering in fear that if he burns the Quran that the Muslim are going to be really mad.We are not at war with Islam but Islam is at war with us. Look at the pictures out of the Muslim Countries. Burning American Flags screaming Death to America. American better wake up and wake up fast- Lebanon at one time was a Christian Nation, the Muslims took over the Country and prosecuted the Christian population. There are no peaceful Muslims. Their intent is to kill all the infidels as the Koran tells them to do.

flintstone on September 11, 2010 at 2:45 PM

Yesterday, the pastor was a jerk loser because of his plans to burn the Koran.

Today, because he says God told him to do the right thing and cancel the book-burning, he’s a jerk loser.

This is troubling to the rest of us who are jerk losers because it means there’s no way we can ever repent of and lose our jerk loser status in the eyes of some.
