White House aides owe IRS over $800,000

posted at 12:15 pm on September 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

So what exactly did “draining the swamp” mean, anyway?  Apparently, it meant taking power and promoting such examples of ethics as Timothy Geithner to high office.  The Washington Post notes that the IRS has a locus of tax evaders to pursue, and not coincidentally that locus happens to be in their neighborhood:

Capitol Hill employees owed $9.3 million in overdue taxes at the end of last year, a sliver of the $1 billion owed by federal workers nationwide but one with potential political ramifications for members of Congress.

The debt among Hill employees has risen at a faster rate than the overall tax debt on the government’s books, according to Internal Revenue Service data. It comes at a time when some Republican members are pushing for the firings of government workers who owe the IRS and President Obama has urged a crackdown on delinquent government contractors.

The IRS information does not identify delinquent taxpayers by name, party affiliation or job title and does not indicate whether members of Congress are among the scofflaws. It shows that 638 employees, or about 4 percent, of the 18,000 Hill workers owe money.

The average unpaid tax bill is $12,787 among the Senate’s delinquent taxpayers and $15,498 among those working in the House.

Barack Obama may want a crackdown on federal contractors who are delinquent, but those in glass Oval Offices should probably not throw stones.  Andrew Malcolm parses the data and discovers that Obama’s team owes almost a million dollars to the IRS, too:

Privacy laws prevent release of individual tax delinquent’s names. But we do know that as of the end of 2009, 41 people inside Obama’s very own White House owe the government they’re allegedly running a total of $831,055 in back taxes. That would cover a lot of special chocolate desserts in the White House Mess.

Desserts?  Nah, that’s just the appetizer:

At the Labor Dept., where Secy. Hilda Solis’ husband had some backtax problems before her confirmation, 463 owe $7,481,463. Eighty-one workers for the Federal Reserve System’s board of governors owe $1,076,733.

Over at the Justice Department, which is so busy enforcing other laws and suing Arizona, 1,971 employees still owe $14,350,152 in overdue taxes.

Then, we come to the Department of Homeland Security, which is run by Janet Napolitano, the former governor of Arizona who preferred to call terrorist acts “man-caused disasters.” Homeland Security is keeping all of us safe by ensuring that a Dutch tourist is onboard every inbound international flight to thwart any would-be bomber with explosives in his underpants.

Within that department, there reside 4,856 people who owe the tax agency a whopping total of $37,012,174.

The executive branch total for IRS delinquencies, with the White House included?  A whopping $59,781,577 in back taxes.    It can’t all be Turbo Tax.  However, with the example set by appointing Geithner to run the IRS, it’s no small wonder that the IRS has trouble collecting from the administration’s aides and employees.

Maybe they took a pledge in solidarity with the poor that they wouldn’t pay a penny taxes until the IRS starts taxing the “Rich” enough.

Come work for the Federal Government where experience is not needed, you will receive a free pass on Obama care mandates (those are for the unwashed masses), you never have to pay your income taxes and where you can always pray to Mecca for guidance during your 18 rounds on the golfcourse.

ObamatheMessiah on September 10, 2010 at 12:25 PM

You know working for the Federal Government for most people means they need at least a postive background check and owing the IRS back taxes usually sets off alarm bells during that check. Something fundamental is broken there.

Johnnyreb on September 10, 2010 at 12:28 PM

The sad part is that that 59 million would only pay for 66 minutes of the 1.2B paid daily just for interest on the national debt….

Bradky on September 10, 2010 at 12:28 PM

So this is why the rest of us have to pay penalties, and interests, while the Washington elites just owe their back taxes they never seem to pay.

The IRS agents are probably under constant threat of losing their jobs if they go after these tax evading deadbeats.

it meant to evict the Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats so that the slimeballs in the administration and Congress wouldn’t have to swim around them….

I think most of the federal people are at the senior executive level. I’d have to work for 20 years just to make a million dollars before taxes.
Senior execs reach a million in about six years.
Out of the total civilian numbers about 3 percent are considered senior execs.

Good sentiment, but one that will get you in a world of hurt.

The IRS and a lot of state tax agencies will mark anyone who takes such as a stance as an “illegal tax protester” and mark your account as such.

If your account is marked like that, the IRS will come at you, sans lube, at any opportunity.

Even if the cheaters are forced to pay up, you just know that they will not face any penalties or (horrors) actual prosecution for their cheating as we proles would. We mustn’t distract those that are gracious enough to dedicate their lives to ruling us with such mundane matters.

First act of a new president: a tax audit of all in Congress and the Executive branch.

My sister has worked at the IRS for many years, and she tells me that her bosses make it crystal clear to her and her fellow employees that ANY tax return impropriety WILL result in loss of employment. Even something as trivial as a late filing.

But then again, rules are for the little people, not their masters in high office.

Public workers have become a privileged class – an elite who live better than their private-sector counterparts. Public servants have become the public’s masters.

Bob Mc on September 10, 2010 at 3:11 PM

Sounds like Rep Chaffetz thinks like your sister’s bosses.

From the story:

IRS debt among government workers has surfaced repeatedly as a political issue over the years, most recently when Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) introduced legislation this year to fire federal workers who owe back taxes unless they have entered into a payment plan. Eight Republicans co-sponsored the bill. No Democrats have signed on, and some have said firings would reduce the government’s prospects of being paid.

“If you’re on the federal payroll and you’re not paying your taxes, you should be fired,” Chaffetz said in an interview. He said the policy should apply across the board and “there should be no special exemptions.”

The Democrats actually said the government’s prospects of getting paid would be reduced by firing the tax dead beats? Uhm… So now tax liabilities can be released in bankruptcy court pretty easily, huh?

SnowSun on September 10, 2010 at 3:40 PM

No wonder our taxes are so high!

Time for a staff reduction on Capitol Hill!

We make them sin!

Since the government is entitled to all of your money, keeping any of it is a mortal sin.

Not paying your taxes is Ok since the government can just print for its needs and you might as well sin big since you have to keep some of the money for those pesky bills.

You are working for a society where Wall Street crooks will stop stealing and you will no longer need money.

This dividing of Islam into “radical Islamists” and Islam is false, and takiya. As the Muslim Prime Minister of Turkey Recip Erdogan said angrily, there is no moderate or immoderate Islam. There is only Islam, that is it. He also said the distinction was insulting.

The misnamed “radicals” are actually following the precepts of the koran and role model of their prophet Mohammad closely. They are respected by devout Muslims as heroes, not condemned as trouble makers. The vast majority of Muslims support their terrorists in active or passive ways. Some Muslims wage demographic jihad by having large numbers of children in western countries, many draining Welfare to do so including polygamous men who could not afford their four wives in any Muslim nation, raising their offspring in the benighted ways of Islam including veiling their women. Others wage law jihad, suing everything in sight for hurt Muslim feelings, gumming up all human rights machinery with specious charges of Islamophobia. Some raise money for the cause. Others conduct media and political jihad by playing lib media and politicians for the fools they are. And the remaining passive Muslims give their consent to all these jihads by their silence.

The handful of Muslims who wish to confine their religion to the private sphere and accept separation of mosque and state i.e. who reject sharia law in western countries are the radicals of Islam. Until the majority of westerners cease being snowed by the blizzard of misinformation from our own media colluding with majority Muslims, we are sitting ducks, picked off country by country by the stealth jihads.
