Video: When attack ads backfire

posted at 8:48 am on September 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

We haven’t heard much from the New Mexico gubernatorial race, but it looks like we’re missing an entertaining election, to say the least. Susana Martinez became the first Hispanic woman nominated for governor in any state by either major party when she won the Republican nomination this year, and is running against the first woman in New Mexico to be Lieutenant Governor, Diane Denish, who was Bill Richardson’s running mate. Despite Denish’s experience with the political master in Richardson, it doesn’t appear that she learned much during her tenure. Denish hit Martinez with an attack ad on education policy featuring a New Mexico teacher, but Denish and her campaign didn’t do a very good job of vetting their spokeswoman. Martinez, however, was already familiar with her, as she explains in this response (via Politico):

D’oh! Didn’t anyone on the Denish campaign check to see whether their teacher-spokeswoman might have a more personal axe to grind? Instead, they not only made themselves look incompetent, they also allowed Martinez to underscore her law-and-order credentials. That also reminds New Mexico voters about the corruption of the Richardson administration and perhaps the need for some major changes in state government.

The last Rasmussen survey in the state showed Martinez opening a modest lead over Denish, 48/43. Don’t be surprised to see that trend accelerate a bit after this round of dueling attack ads.

This ad, by itself, should demonstrate the incompetency of the left that always seems to be their standard operating procedure. Illiteracy on this level is usually just the tip of the iceberg. Martinez should make this a slam dunk.

volsense on September 10, 2010 at 8:58 AM

The left consistently treats the electorate as idiots because they know it will always work on a certain percentage.

Keemo on September 10, 2010 at 9:00 AM

I think people are looking for some basic competence. This will be devastating to Denish.

It’s nice and tidy too. The whole thing can be summed up very clearly in a 30 second ad. It’s usually a little more difficult to do.

Must have had Obama’s crack vetting team help out with this.

Jayrae on September 10, 2010 at 9:14 AM

That ad is totally insensitive! That poor woman’s husband is in prison! I bet when he gets out, he doesn’t even get to vote thanks to people like Martinez. In fact, he should be able to vote three or four times. And when he’s dead, he’ll still be voting absentee, but only if you elect a Democrat!

Remember, vote Democrat this November to keep our government just the way it is!

I have to say, the GOP is developing a tremendous amount of talent.

The bench will be deep for years to come.

Narutoboy on September 10, 2010 at 9:19 AM

Great ad. I love it when attack ads backfire. Martinez ends up looking great and Denish ends up looking like a female Joe Biden clone.

The consequences of vetting hopefully will result in Zero the Dog’s neutering in November.

I just laugh at the terrible acting from the lady:

“Diane Denish… she’s on our side.”
“Okay, this time with feeling.”
“Diane Denish… she’s on our side.”
“No, that’s the same thing. Don’t be so wooden.”
“Diane Denish… she’s on our side.”
“Good God, lady, quit clenching your teeth! Can someone get Phil Davison on the phone? We’re gonna need help.”

“Oh, fsck it. Just run it as is.”

Tax cheats? Democrats? Hmmm, even the Washington Post can’t ignore that one, given the story about our “wonderful” government employees owing 9 Million in back taxes and 41 of Obambi’s employees in the White House Executive office owing almost 900 THOUSAND in back taxes. Ah yes, it’s for the “little people” in Democrat parlance. As in “taxes are for the little people, not important people like us who are taking care of them.”

Was that hilarious? It’s usually an exaggeration to describe someone this way, but in this case her teeth are actually clenched when she says “She’s on our side”. It’s like they have a gun to her head off camera. (Or a picture of her incarcerated hubby with a trustee looking lasciviously at him.)

leilani on September 10, 2010 at 9:43 AM

Dems don’t need no vetting process. We’re supposed to vote for them because their dems. Sheesh! Figure it out people.

thekingtut on September 10, 2010 at 10:24 AM

The teacher, Freda Trujillo, endorses Denish’s education plan in the ad.

In a statement to the Journal this week, Trujillo said that her ex-husband belonged in jail and that Martinez had done her job properly putting him there.

Trujillo married Carmona in 2004, about two years after Carmona was originally charged with beating his ex-girlfriend and kidnapping. Carmona wasn’t sentenced until 2007.

The Journal asked the Denish campaign whether it knew about the NEA’s ad ahead of time, whether it had approved it ahead of time and whether it approved of the ad now that
information about Trujillo’s ex-husband had surfaced. The campaign did not respond to any of the questions.

http://goo.gl/T5q8

Sounds like she’s just a teacher endorsing the candidate that is in the teacher unions pocket. She calls him her ex husband and that he deserves to be in prison. But one had to question her ethics and thinking skills if she married this jerk to begin with.

How do the Dems manage to always find the worst people to put in their ads?To say they don’t vet them is one thing, but how many better people could they have gotten without vetting? There must be thousands of teachers in NM,and the only one they could find is the wife of a felon? They could have pulled a name out of a hat and done better, many times.

It’s a teacher union ad. They’re the ones who didn’t check her out in advance.

Mike Antonucci on September 10, 2010 at 12:21 PM

No one listens to New Mexico, but it’s sure a joy to see Dianne Denish take a hit like this. She and the Richardson administration have screwed things up so badly in this state it’s going to take years to fix it all.

Having worked in a small town newsroom in New Mexico, I’ve had the dubious privilege of seeing Denish and Richardson at functions when they make trips out of the northern end of the state to visit the peons. To say they were less than dazzling visits would be an understatement. To say the nastiness they represent is seeded through most of the government of our state would also be an understatement.

The corruption problem here is just about as bad as it gets in state government, but because the latino vote here generally goes democrat, we’ve been stuck with El Gordo for far too long. The man acts like he’s a member of the mafia, with these big, mean lookin’ bodyguards following him around all the time, glaring at the little people to keep them from approaching the governor. Denish thinks so highly of her own self that she treats those assigned to escort her like indentured servants.

Go Susana! I’d love for New Mexico’s first female governor to be a republican. It would piss the libbies off sooooo bad. Gives me the warm fuzzies just to think about it.

Mad Mad Monica on September 10, 2010 at 1:01 PM

I shouldn’t be surprised, since dishonest people tend to be stupid, but even the teacher didn’t think anyone would check up on her history. If my husband was in prison, I certainly would beg off appearing in a political ad which could hurt my candidate.

When you consider everything she had to be thinking just to do the ad ….and she’s a teacher! Gah.

Its good to see someone with the “right tude” in the Republican Party. Who’d of thought the conservative women of this country would wind up taking the RINO Party by its ear and moving it in the right direction to win elections? Question, will the Repub’s learn and place one of these women at the head of the Party instead of RINO’s like Steele?

We can all help Susana Martinez win her election for Governor by an even bigger margin by sending the video of this ad to everybody you know in New Mexico (and anybody you know who enjoys political humor).

The bigger her margin of victory, the easier it will be for her to put her policies into action.

Gifts like this ad don’t happen often enough. Let’s maximize this opportunity.
