Should the FDA ban menthol cigarettes?
posted at 3:35 pm on September 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Reason TV takes a look at a new effort by the FDA to bar menthol cigarettes in the US. It follows an already-imposed ban on flavored cigarettes, including clove, chocolate, and other flavors used in some brands. No one doubts that cigarette smoking is not a healthy pastime and can be terribly addictive, but do menthols represent a larger danger than regular cigarettes? Are they really a “gateway smoke” to hook teens, or just a consumer choice that carries the same risks that have always been present? Reason argues that this is just another tactic in a larger plan to impose a Prohibition on tobacco use altogether:
Recently the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned “flavored” cigarettes, preventing the sale of clove and (the hitherto unknown) “chocolate” cigarettes. These “candy flavored” smokes hook teenagers by masking, according to one anti-smoking activist, “the taste of the poison.” And earlier this year, the FDA prevented the branding of cigarettes as “light” or “medium,” instead forcing manufacturers to rechristen them with innocuous names like “Marlboro Gold” and “Marlboro Blue.”
At the end of September, the FDA will announce the formation of a Menthol Subcommittee, which will review the available scientific literature on the health effects of menthol cigarettes. But are menthol cigarettes any worse for smokers than “non-flavored” cigarettes? Are they harder to quit, as anti-smoking activists suggest? Or is the government campaign against menthol simply another step on the road to the complete abolition of cigarettes?
Having smoked cigarettes in the past, both menthols and “lights” as well as an occasional clove cigarette, this seems like an overblown issue. If anyone believes that clove cigarettes are gateway smokes, they obviously have never tried one; they’re usually harsh and less pleasant than regular cigarettes, despite the “candy” designation given them. The ban on the use of the label “light” is equally silly, as those who smoke them understand it to refer to flavor, not carcinogenic capacity.
Does the FDA even belong in this equation? Shouldn’t this be handled by the Bureau of Alchohol, Tobacco, and Firearms? No one thinks that cigarettes or other tobacco products are either “food” or “drugs” in the sense that most people understand them. BATF already has jurisdiction in this area. If the FDA takes over that jurisdiction, then how can an agency that certifies safety in products keep cigarettes legal at all? If they do, how does the FDA reject medical treatments that are merely ineffective while allowing hundreds of billions of cigarettes to be sold every year?
Once again, we have the federal government acting as nanny rather than allowing adults to make their own decisions. No one forces people to use tobacco products, after all, and we have literally spent decades educating people about the dangers. At the same time, of course, the government has grabbed tobacco revenue in ever-growing amounts in order to fund its own priorities. Who are the real hypocrites in this equation?

Meh, I smoked clove cigarettes at one young point in my life and the only reason I did was because they looked exotic and crackled as they burned. But they were awful, nasty awful. Djarums I believe they were called.

The real question is given that a large portion of menthol cigarette smokers are black, if the FDA does try to ban them will be a racist motive or a health concern?

This is really getting ridiculous. Seriously, can we find no way to kill this beast? These morons have their paws on every thing I do, literally.

This whole argument will be interesting. We’ve got liberals who want to eliminate tobacco products via the FDA, while at the same time working overtime to allow the distribution, sale, and use of marijuana.
Sounds perfectly logical. On planet Bizzaro.

Nothing else matters, especially foolishness like this.

•Many of the carcinogens and co-carcinogens present in tobacco smoke are also present in smoke from marijuana.
•Marijuana smoking does cause inflammation and cell damage, and it has been associated with pre-cancerous changes in lung tissue.
•Marijuana has been shown to cause immune system dysfunction, possibly predisposing individuals to cancer.

I smoked menthol cigarettes (Kools) for years but when i decided to quit I just stopped smoking.Period. 14 years ago. It was a “gateway” to nothing else. And, some say, menthol cigarettes are more addictive. ‘Sez who?
I agree that cigarette smoking is dangerous but I’m sick and tired of the nannies.

When I was a kid, a wise auto mechanic, Korean War vet explained to me that menthol was the choice of Afro-Americans. I had just bought a pack of Salems with my lunch money, and he informed me it should be Marlboro.
Someone else told me that the flavor in menthol cigarettes was from formaldehyde. That reminded me of the frogs in biology, and that was the end of smoking.
Hening on September 10, 2010 at 4:09 PM
This is the dumbest thing ever. You can buy any type of flavoring you want. I can make you watermelon-cheesecake cigarettes if you want them. This is the equivalent of banning Southern Comfort because it’s a “gateway drink” to Jack Daniels.

Menthols are disproportionately smoked by blacks, so this is clearly racist.

I don’t support the ban – but I’d love to see the Democratically controlled FDA try to implement it.
See – if a Republican Tsunami happens at the poll in November – I don’t think it can all be attributed to their dismal failures in resurrecting the economy.
No ..
I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Americans are coming to the realization that the Democrats are overbearing “overlords” who want to control everything you DO … or EAT … or SMOKE … or DRIVE … or how much you’re allowed to keep in YOUR WALLET. There’s a completely “stifling” feeling out here now that government is everywhere – in everything … when they shouldn’t be.
What the Dimmocrats failed to calculate? The fact that Americans are genetically different from the rest of the worlds peoples. We are an immigrant nation – a melting pot of the most daring and independent peoples in the world. Our ancestors came to this nation – and bred with other genetically inclined people from all over the world.
Darwinism at its finest! And it’s reason for American Exceptionalism.
Silly libbies.
HondaV65 on September 10, 2010 at 4:38 PM
No. it shouldn’t be handled by EITHER organization. The Federal Gov has no constitutional power on this in my opinion. The fact that you argue jurisdiction only tells me that you have given up and accept the Gov to control everything.
Regarding the rest of the story, my opinion should be clear. Smoking is a personal choice. Either cigs are safe enough in general to smoke, or their not. Banning flavors is only nanny-state crap and nothing else.
BierManVA on September 10, 2010 at 4:39 PM
I’m sure his fat patients do need to lose weight just as he should stop smoking.

Nanny statism is finally hitting some people where they live.
Thanks to the FDA, Obama can kiss the menthol-lovin’ black vote goodbye.
Speaking of nanny banning, I gotta rush off to Walgreens and get me a case or two of cough syrup before I have to pay to visit my doc and beg him for a prescription. While I’m there, I’ll buy myself some discontinued incandescent light bulbs too. Fluorescents make me look all wrinkly and stuff.

Does anyone else think it is odd that the left wants to ban tobacco products but wants to legalize marijuana?
How about how they have no problem with young kids having “medical” marijuana but want to restrict soda pop, salty snacks and sugary candy.
What am I missing?
