Open thread: Obama press conference

posted at 10:45 am on September 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

In 15 minutes, Barack Obama will offer a rarity: an open press conference.  In the past 14 months, this will only be his third, counting from the disastrous July 2009 presser in which he claimed that Cambridge police “acted stupidly” in the Henry “Skip” Gates arrest.  His only other open press conference since then came in June to address the Gulf oil spill, six weeks after it began and only when his numbers began plummeting from the fallout.

Once again, Obama faces a moment in which he cannot avoid the press.  The economy has tanked over “Recovery Summer,” and its failure has dragged down his party’s prospects of controlling the agenda on Capitol Hill for the next two years.  While Obama rested on Martha’s Vineyard, Democrats began openly grousing that the party’s nominal leader had gone AWOL on the economy, instead sending Joe Biden out on a Chip Diller tour, something the media noticed, too.  The White House admitted that Obama needed to be more out front on the economy, but couldn’t figure out when and where to make it happen.  They tried shoehorning the economy into Obama’s war speech from the Oval Office, but he wound up sounding incoherent on both issues instead.

What can we expect from today’s presser?  Obama will hammer Republicans on their reluctance to pass a small-business stimulus, prompted by Harry Reid’s restrictions on amendments to the bill in the Senate, and tout his latest package of tax credits and more public-sector spending.  Will the press ask tough questions about both, such as Obama’s plan to pay for business tax credits with higher business taxes elsewhere, and the failure of public-sector spending last year to generate any mid- to long-term economic growth?  Or will they let Obama off the hook by asking about the Ground Zero mosque and the idiotic Koran-burning exercise in Florida?  I’m guessing a mix of both, and lengthy, meandering, filibuster answers from Obama to keep the number of questions to a minimum.

If you’re inclined to play Obama Speech Bingo, check out the card that Sarjex created in the Green Room!

Yes, but if you could burn a Bible on a site, then why not a Koran?

Christians, Jews, and Hindus aren’t trying to kill us.

Hey, Barry, a “Hindu temple” is called a “mandir.”

Just sayin’.

“When someone goes out of their way to be provocative.” Kind of like building a mosque at Ground Zero.

Mr. President, is building the mosque an act of provocation? Somebody ask him that question.

JohnInCA on September 10, 2010 at 12:15 PM

If Guantanamo is a ‘recruiting tool’, -if we move them to a different prison, that prison will become ‘a recruiting tool’. Muslims hardly need a new reason, they’ve been coming up with reasons since the Dark Ages.

Millions of Muslims have overwhelming rejected violence?

Where are their voices?

There were plenty of voices from the highest echelons of our government about a Koran being burned.

I ask again. Where were their voices on 9/11? Where are their voices about this triumphalist mosque at GZ?

marybel on September 10, 2010 at 12:20 PM

Mr. Victimhood in Chief.

Just imagine, the president of the U.S.A. spends most days feeling victimized. What shame! He should be mocked on-going.

Schadenfreude on September 10, 2010 at 12:13 PM

That’s how liberals live. They are NEVER responsible for their own actions. It is always someone or something else at fault for every negative thing in their life.

Who else but a liberal could be the most powerful person in the world and whine about it?

ButterflyDragon on September 10, 2010 at 12:20 PM

kingsjester on September 10, 2010 at 12:17 PM

Yeah, he dodged the FNC reporter’s question about the wisdom. The absolute right is all that matters.

A very weak performance.

BuckeyeSam on September 10, 2010 at 12:20 PM

A light bulb finally came on. If that Pastor of the small Christian Church decides to not burn copies of the Koran after all, I think he should say that he is going to burn copies of Mein Kampf instead, as a very close substitute. The Koran is about twice as bad as Mein Kampf so I guess he would have to burn twice as many copies of Mein Kampf.

The Obama heyday is officially over.

As for campaigning, Mr. Obama failed to warn Democrats that—thanks to the agenda he was asking them to pass—by September he’d be upside-down in his approval on most issues, and not much help. Instead of a president to help them, Democrats have found a president to run against. And it isn’t George W. Bush.

Unless and until I hear Muslims in their thousands, and tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands, and ultimately in their millions, decrying radical Islam from the rooftops around the world every single day…..then I don’t wish to hear from them on any subject.

If outrage is not expressed, outrage does not exist. Any questions?

Obama is done. The private sector has self contracted the Blue Flu doing the minimum necessary to survive and not much more. Every week we pull billions of dollars from the equity markets as trading volume continues to collapse. No one wants to play his rigged game anymore. He is being marginalized and there’s nothing he can do about it. People vote at the ballot box and with their pocketbooks. Obama is feeling the wrath of the latter. He will soon see the wrath of the former come November. Until then, we limp along waiting for change we CAN BELIEVE In.

The only ones running away from Obama on the economy faster than the Dems are the media. After the first four questions on the economy, the next three veered away. Someone already commented on this early in the presser, but now it is a story. More like a distraction, so his media minions (Politico!) could make this is a story instead of how lame his answers were.

President Obama goes ringless at presser

Sometimes, a White House press conference can be a chance for a president to take some weight off his shoulders … but weight off his fingers?

Eagle-eyed reporters noticed that President Barack Obama wasn’t sporting his wedding ring during Friday’s White House press conference.

“big to-do over potus not wearing his wedding ring today,” Tweeted The Hill’s Sam Youngman, who was at the presser.

Journalist Keith Koffler joked, “There was some snickering in the press room afterward that he might have become so hungry during Ramadan that he ate it.”

Obama’s wedding band is “an intricate gold design from Indonesia, where he had lived as a boy,” the New York Times reported in 2009.

Michelle will probably be okay with it; after all, she once left home without her wedding ring, too.

UPDATE: A White House spokesman tells POLITICO that Obama’s ring is being repaired, though it’s unclear what needed to be fixed.

Look! A ramadan joke!
I bet the repair is sizing it down. His fingers are getting skinnier as he shrinks.

OMG Rush just mentioned this story!!
