Obama: Gitmo gives al-Qaeda a talking point
posted at 12:55 pm on September 10, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
In an otherwise rather dull and dreary press conference, Barack Obama offered this old saw on the need to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay as part of a string of reasons — in answer to a question as to why he hasn’t done much at all on his promised closure of the facility. Obama talks about the cost of maintaining Gitmo, even though almost all of those costs were paid up front in the construction of the facility, but then reminds us that al-Qaeda doesn’t much like Gitmo, either:
You can’t underestimate the impact of that. Uh, you know, al-Qaeda operatives still cite Guantanamo as a justification for attacks against the United States.
Well, we opened the Gitmo facility after 9/11, when AQ murdered almost 3,000 people in a series of attacks. Was that a pre-emptive strike against opening Gitmo as a detention facility? Did their attacks on American assets abroad rely on that justification from 1993 to 2000, when they attacked the USS Cole in Yemen? Since we opened Gitmo, AQ has attacked a number of other nations which don’t have a detention facility at Gitmo or one like it. AQ also justifies its attacks on the basis that we support Israel and haven’t converted to an Islamic theocracy. Should we meet those demands as well?
It’s an asinine justification, one that is both intellectually and strategically bankrupt. If Gitmo doesn’t serve our national-security purposes, then make that argument outside of the rantings of lunatic terrorists as a basis for policy. If Obama can’t do that, then perhaps it’s time to move on from the Gitmo debate altogether and proceed with the military tribunals and trials that his administration interrupted and can’t seem to get back on track. As far as working with Congress on those issues, Congress has now three times authorized military tribunals for the 9/11 plotters and other terrorists captured abroad. It doesn’t take Congress to get those trials moving — it just takes an executive that stops interfering in the process.

Alright then, PBHO, you have blood on your hands for not closing Gitmo in the first 100 days of your tenure as you promised you would.
What a pantload this guy is, saying that closing Gitmo needs to be a bipartisan effort. He has the power to get it done today, but he wants the GOP to blame it on. Coward. Friggin’ coward.

You know, he could just close the place up, and that would be that. No more recruiting tool propaganda. All he has to do is tell the military to close up shop and they will be out of there in a couple of weeks if he really wanted them to be. Heck my command organized and conducted the evac of 20,000 dependents from there in less than a month back in 92, so it is doable.

We got rid of our side of the minefields when I was there 91-93. Not sure if the Cubans have done the same though. They used to burn their minefields off every so often so no one could make maps of them from their side and try to navigate them to freedom. A burning minefield is is some scary $hit at night when you are not expecting it. The one time they did it when I was there, it burned for almost 3 days with AT and AP mines going off at irregular intervals.
Johnnyreb on September 10, 2010 at 1:26 PM
Ed’s not denying that it’s been used as a recruitment tool. He’s explaining that it’s not a reason to close it. He’s explaining that our defense shouldn’t be run by jihadists. They don’t like it that we’re in Iraq or Afghanistan either, but we weren’t in either place and didn’t have Gitmo before 9/11.
And since then, they haven’t attacked us like that. We’ve been significant safer since opening Gitmo and going into Iraq and Afghanistan.

This is also a good parallel with the burning Korans. If he’s willing to take action that puts security at risk to placate in the case of Gitmo, why not knock a few heads to prevent the burning Korans?
He’s having as few as politically possible. He and/or his staff must know how bad he is at them. Luckily for him, as a Democrat, the press whines rather than vilifies him for the lack of access.

They want us to (in no particular order):
- leave the Middle East
- stop supporting Israel
- allow Muslims to do whatever they wish in western countries
- dispose of our traditions, laws and culture and substitute theirs
- never do anything to disrespect Islam while ignoring their perpetual outrage at our mere existence
- close Gitmo
- stop prosecuting terrorists
- allow a victory mosque to be built near GZ
In return they’ll promise not to kill us.

Firstly, are we on some sort of equivalent moral base with Al-Qaeda? Obama is basically implying that they have an excuse for their violence as long as they think we are interfering in their affairs. According to this logic, they will have talking points until we: Pull out of Iraq, Afghanistan, and the middle east in its entirety. Cease all ties with our allies overseas, namely Israel. Stop Predator attacks, release prisoners, shut down MTV and VH1, make our women wear veils, etc. etc. etc. It doesn’t end. This asshole needs to be impeached.

Used to be kicking asses and taking names was a DETERRENT for crime and evil. But in this Age of Aquarius, evil criminals call the shots. Today, any approach to evil with less than “compassionate understanding” is lambasted by the so-called morally superior. People who do wrong are not responsible, they’re simply reacting to oppressive circumstances.
But what do we really get in response for all that dialogue and understanding? Pure contempt. Mealy-mouthed moral equivalency in the face of evil and terror lays better groundwork for recruitment into terrorism than retribution and incarceration.

Do you see the al-Qaidea terrorists worrying about how attacks against America might be aiding US Military recruiting?
Or being considerate of how demonstrations calling for our deaths might be arousing our anger?
Or fretting about how a stream of terrorist attacks might be giving people all manner of negative regard against Islam in America?
Or about how threatening annihilation of Israel might be stiffening our resolve to support Israel? (Obama and his panty-waist State Department notwithstanding).
Or about how attacking our troops might be encouraging them to push the limits of the Rules of Engagement?
No? They’re not worried about that?
Well then stop pi$$ing in your pants over the prospect that some half-a$$ed mullah somewhere might give an anti-American speech.
The goal of terrorism is NOT death and destruction; it is disruption and eventual dissolution of society. On this score, and with a complete lack of resolve that goes back several Administrations, I think that they are succeeding:
- One guy – one guy! – with a bottle of chemicals has caused millions of travelers to no longer bring a bottle of water on board an airplane;
- One guy – one guy! – with a hollowed out shoe heel has cause millions of travelers to shuffle through security in their stocking feet;
- One guy – one guy! – with chemical underpants had TSA announcing that all travelers must sit in their seats with their hands visible for the last 45 minutes of every flight;
- One guy – one mullah! – wrote a fatwah against Comedy Central, which caused them to pull an entire South Park show;
And I should worry about Guantanamo Bay providing them with talking points and a recruiting theme? Sheesh.
They are nothing more than kids with guns, and it is time that we cease regarding them as anything more than that. We’ll give them due consideration when/if they grow up.

Obama’s first and as far as can be established with any certianity, only religion is Islam. It is a well known fact that children exposed to religion early in life tend to keep those religious beliefs.
Michelle’s radical church with its Isalmic ties would have been acceptable to Obama as a muslim. We have no understanding of how many services he attended with his family, but indication seem to be that it was not many based on his claimed unfamiliarity with the radical sermons. Michelle on the other hand seems to have been there regularly since she clearly shares the convictions of those sermons. It might be noted that Muslims are allowed to deny they are muslim if it benifits Islam for them to do so.
Obama’s trip to Turkey is very telling of Obama’s beliefs. If Obama was not Muslim, Michelle accompaning him would have not been a problem. If Obama is a Muslim, then it would be a problem since Michelle would have at the least had to walk behind him with her body covered, including her arms that she seems so proud of. It goes without saying that she would never do that. Michelle chose to return home. That in itself has some interest since it tells us that Michelle understood his problem with her going to Turkey with him. There was of course the speech were he painted himself as the president of the largest Muslim country in the world. More telling was when he visited the Mosque. Non believers are not allowed to enter a Mosque, yet it was highlighted that Obama, despite complete ignorance of western protocol, knew to remove his shoes before entering the Mosque, which he did without any concern or need of permission to do so.
We saw him bow to the Saudi King followed by all sorts of excuses as to why it was not a bow. It was and it was a full bow from the waist to show honor. He went on to bow to other world leaders to create the appearence that he did it to all heads of states with no concern of the people he was suppose to be representing. Why was it such a problem that they had to claim he did not bow, or that he had to make an ass of himself to America? The Saudi King is also the keeper of the two Mosque, the most holy of positions in the Muslim world. A Muslim woould be compelled to bow to him.
Gitmo is just one of many of his concerns that he has about waging war against muslims. We can complie a long list of ways that he has done the bidding or helped the Radical Islamic causes. He does not want there to be convictions of crimes against Muslims, especially not with his name involved.
Now that he realizes he is a one term president with his incompentence as a hallmark, and his marriage on the rocks as a result, he will turning to his faith, to his inner child’s faith. It will literally be his only place of comfort. We probably would do well to be aware of the teachings of that faith in dealing with enemies for we are his enemy. Add to that, he is a narcissist and narcissit seek revenge on those that threaten them or a real or precieved way.
