Time for another “Chris Christie destroys teachers’ union shill” clip

posted at 7:42 pm on September 9, 2010 by Allahpundit

It’s a bit long and not quite as magical as the last time he destroyed a teachers’ union shill, but in case you haven’t enjoyed any sweet, sweet Chris Christie porn lately, this will set you right. The last two minutes are the highlight, in case you can’t spare nine.

Incidentally, does this help redeem him for his treason to “true conservatism” in endorsing Mike Castle? One of the fascinating things about Christie is that, while he’s building a reputation for being in some respects RINO-ish if perhaps not quite full-blown RINO, his demeanor is completely incongruent with that. Center-right Republicans aren’t “supposed” to be fierce and pugnacious; they’re supposed to be milquetoasts, hesitant about which way to go on issues and willing to broker “six of one, half a dozen of the other” compromises to extricate themselves. This is a guy who, partly through force of personality, will end up making moderate stances on things like immigration more respectable to base voters. Not entirely respectable, but more respectable. A little ‘tude goes a long way!

My wife is a teacher here in Texas. She makes less than the average teacher in NJ, pays about $400 towards her health insurance every month, and we don’t yet know if she will be getting a raise this year.

Kafir on September 9, 2010 at 8:13 PM

I know that many teachers get slammed as greedy union members, but salaries and benefits for teachers vary drastically from state to state and even from one county to another. Don’t take this anti-teacher talk personally.

I would like to see data on all the states, with details on salary, pension and health contributions, and pension amounts and eligibility. Some of them are definitely paid so well that they can do without increases for a few years.

First of all, I have not lambasted the public school system…….First, lets start with this…I sat here, stood here very respectfully and listened to you. So, if you would like to conduct a respectful conversation, I’m happy to do it. If you don’t, please go sit down and I will answer the next question.

Favorite part of the video. It is time we start having adult conversations about the problems facing this country. And besides, would this woman put up with one of her students being that disrespectful towards her?

Much of school budgets get blasted on useless administrators and middle management. Fluff jobs such as the one Moochelle had at the U of Chicago Hospital System. Not paid to really do anything but fill a quota, attend political rallies, collect union dues and occupy an office. Often all that administrative graft means mediocre teachers salaries, crumbling buildings and the usual social promotions mill manufacturing illiterate students.

Don’t know many school districts that have a union officer that does all of that and isn’t in the classroom. Any Union officer that has that kind of a position is paid by the union (probably from the dues), not by the school district. Those positions are regional by nature…can’t really be set up like other unions. There are teachers that are elected by the local union, but have to do those duties at other times outside the classroom (or supposed to).

There is plenty of waste in a school system, but lots of that is due to the regulations imposed by the State and Federal Depts. of Ed. Education Regulations always seem to cost more money and do nothing to improve learning…This from a conservative teacher

pennjazz on September 9, 2010 at 11:52 PM

I don’t think she is a plant – she is a misinformed school teacher who believes everything the union bosses tell her. I love the part in the last 3 minutes where she starts to instruct him on contracts. She says something to the effect of “the union can’t renegotiate because it’s part of the contract” (raises, health care & retirement contribution). Really? If the two parties agree to re-write a contract, it can’t be done? Wow, must be etched in stone. Or platinum.

I was mostly trying to suggest administrators exclusively on the public dime pushing the NEA or AFT agenda; not necessarily in any union’s employ. Yet I have seen circumstances which cause question as to whom is the master served? Is the master the union agenda or the student’s educational benefit? Plus, the typical college bureaucratic environment, in my experience, appears chock full of dead weight pulling checks.

During my graduate school years I considered teaching (for about five seconds) photography and science at a public school. A few things I remember from that interview besides seeing no facilities, no textbook, poor English spoken and no real plan of instruction was the activist memorabilia in the principals office, her hinting of various political interests and meeting a herd of assistant principals to whom I posed a friendly question “Well, and what do you teach?” To which I got a blank stare as though their sense of purpose had been questioned.

In other circumstances I’ve been made aware, and seen directly, that many states’ school budgets go towards bureaucracies completely unrelated to education. In one state, at least, a sizable percentage went (and probably still goes) toward processing Social Security disability claims. The claims would be paid federally but the bureaucracy making the decision was state-level and by that state’s department of education budget. My problem with that is the budget allocation should fit the bureaucracy and to me budgeting that through “education” funds is hardly appropriate and deceptive.

Must say that his math is off. He said Obama sent his state 1 billion last year and that was all spent in that year so Chris cut 820 million and needed to fill a hole in education with another 280 million. That should have been 180 million if he was trying to sum it up to 1 billion.

That said….this guy knows how to engage a lib.

One hope for Christie – his personal pick for Lt. Governor, Kim Guadagno, as a county sheriff got into 287(g) training. Maybe she can ‘splain to him why amnesty is a no, no.

From Wiki:

Elected sheriff of Monmouth County in 2007, succeeding Joseph Oxley, she became the first woman to serve in the post. As sheriff, she is responsible for managing a staff of nearly 700 and a $65 million budget that includes operation of a 1,328-bed maximum security prison. The department was one of 11 accepted nationwide into the federal program established under Immigration and Nationality Act Section 287(g) by which local police officers are deputized to act initiate immigration actions against illegal aliens involved in major crimes.[5]

NoDonkey on September 10, 2010 at 5:09 AM

This public school teacher agrees with every word Christie said. A pay freeze and 1.5% toward benefits is a completely reasonable request in such tight times.

The laid-off teachers in NJ agree with me–and probably want to bop that whining, out of touch teacher in the noggin.

Grace_is_sufficient on September 10, 2010 at 5:30 AM

For the haters – Christie is taking a position on education that all of us might agree with, but very few of our elected officials were willing to lay it all down to fight for. Hes shining a public light on the teacher’s union and the massive corruption that exists in our education system. He aint the perfect candidate for most us. You might not agree with 90% of his other positions, but this single act should be enough to get you to support him.

If his approval ratings continue to go up i guarantee we’ll see other politicians follow his lead and start to gouge the public unions and their massive mountains of waste + corruption. That’s good for everyone. Just the fact that lowering their medical contributions 1.25% for a year saves 800+ million is appalling.

I’m trying to figure out how to get RINOs to be more like Christie and less like Snowe. Where I live, I’m a RINO in a sea of leftists. I’m pugnacious rather than milquetoast when discussing politics. I think it is partially because I tend to be well-informed about politics. To argue conservative positions where Christie and I live we need to know the facts, because in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the assumption is that the left possesses the truth. If we could only convince more people to be interested in politics and read Hot Air or some other good news source for a half a day, maybe there would be more combative RINOs. If G-d wills it, Fox News may create a combative RINO army. Of course, social cons may not like that.

Public education is on the rocks everywhere, even in Texas. My wife has taught for 36 years; is nationally recognized; is presently Teacher of the Year for the entire school district and makes $52K. She pays about $450/month for our health insurance. She goes to work at 7am and gets home about 6pm. Her summer break goes from June 12 to August 12.

She will retire next year. Why? Terrible and overloaded administration at every level. Principal leadership is worst. In efforts to recruit Hispanic, female principals the principals come and go on a yearly basis. They come in, are poor people managers, know little about education, make a mess and are transferred creating total chaos for the school in the process. It has happened over and over again. Nothing can be accomplished if it paints minorities in a worse light than white students. All efforts must go to underachieving minorities at the expense of anyone else. It won’t change until public education is thrown overboard.

Unions of today still think that they are living in the era that they were needed because there were real abuse going on. Today, Unions create the abuse, poor working conditions, etc. and demand funds (and they actually know how much they need, but pad it so the Unions top levels gets a raise, to fight the problems they created.

Therefore, Union members exert peer pressure on their fellow union members and on and on and on and on and on, until there is not enough $$$$ to pay members but enought in the special funds established by union management to take care of themselves.

2. No contribution from some teachers for full family medical, dental, and eyecare insurance for life?! Are they out of their f*cking minds?! That insurance costs more than $1,000 a month.

3. Christie does a wonderful job of controlling the conversation and the physical environment around him. He is sound of mind.

BigWyo on September 9, 2010 at 8:36 PM

He killed that guy on a motorcycle bcs he was driving too fast, didn’t he?
I think he was the SD pol that had tons of speeding tickets.
Good riddance.
One of my kids goes to BHSU. It’s a nice place.
Better than DSU here in ND.
& now On topic: all here who know me know I’m a teacher & union member here in little SW ND.
But the state union NDEA is a lot more tame than NEA.
So even though some of my dues go toward NEA, I do check the box denying political contribution (I know-probably doesn’t matter).
But from the worthless NEA mag I get, I notice in the letters that there are a lot more conservative teacher members speaking out now to the NEA.
The teacher’s union in ND doesn’t really have a whole lot of power.
There’s something about our state law(s) that makes it less effective at strong-arming.
Our pay in ND is lower than the national avg-but our contract days now at 181 days/yr & going up to 182 days/yr next yr is not bad.
Every school district is totally different in what they pay for a base salary & benefits.
The teachers negotiate all that with the school board.
My base pay is avg for the state + for now they pay ~93% or so of a FAMILY policy for those of us who want it.
Single people don’t get any more.
It’s a way for the district to attract teachers with families, which they want here. And it works for them.
I can’t complain about my salary. I think it’s fine.
And if I wanted to make more for the 7yrs of college I put in, I’m free to go work in the private sector with my geology degree.
But I do it bcs of my lifestyle & of course kids are way better to work with than adults.
The only beef I have with teacher salaries (& this IS a union thing) is that I have always said it is ridiculous to pay a science teacher the same as a PE teacher.
Bcs I can go out & get a job making good $$.
The PE teacher will more than likely be working at Wal-Mart or UPS.
And I’m still not sure about merit pay-bcs even though it sounds like a good idea, who’s actually deciding upon who gets what? That’s right-crooked rotten administrators.
So I guess if things stayed the way they are right now in my district, I can’t complain.

Badger40 on September 10, 2010 at 11:14 AM

Taking on the teachers’ union in NJ is easy territory for Christie. Until this go around, few people realized that teachers mostly pay NOTHING toward their very good health benefits. For a lot of people who have lost their jobs it’s hard to bleed for a group who whines about not getting a 4 or 5% raise. Like the race card – the it’s for the children card has been overplayed
