Dems picking their favorite Republican in New Hampshire?

posted at 3:43 pm on September 9, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

It’s not terribly unusual for both parties to play in their opponent’s primary races, attempting to soften the ground for the general election.  It probably happens more in the later primaries given the shorter time frame to make a general election pitch, and the primaries coming up next week wrap up the nomination process for Congressional races around the country.  The amount of effort put into such kibbutzing reveals plenty about the state of mind of the opposition, though, and that may be most true in New Hampshire — where Democrats have put a lot of money into stopping Sean Mahoney from winning the primary for the NH-01 Congressional :

The state Democratic Party has been playing in the Republican U.S. Senate primary pretty much all year now, doing the bidding of Binnie and Lamontagne (as well as their own Paul Hodes) in attacking Ayotte relentlessly.

But the NHDP took its involvement to a new level yesterday when two full-color mailers hit GOP homes attacking Republican 1st District U.S. House hopeful Sean Mahoney.

One claims that while Mahoney says he opposed the Wall Street bailout, he actually profited from it. The other claims that Mahoney drove a Massachusetts firm he owned, Folio Exhibits, into bankruptcy.

Both urge Republicans to “vote ‘no’ on Sean Mahoney.”

State GOP Chair John H. Sununu called the move “not surprising since John Lynch and the Democratic State Committee have been attacking Republicans for the past year. This is typical Democratic dirty politics and they should stay out of our primary.”

The Mahoney campaign reveled in the attack, hanging it on Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, while noting that the Folio firm was profitable when Mahoney left and that Mahoney “stood up to the leaders of his own party to oppose the Wall Street bailouts because it was the right thing to do.”

Two full-color mailers?  That had to cost some considerable amount of money.   Has the NHDP bothered to do that much to support their own candidate, Carol Shea-Porter?   If he has Democrats this spooked, they must be looking at some internal polling that shows Mahoney doing more damage to Shea-Porter than any other Republican in the race.

Honestly, while this kind of activity isn’t all that unusual, it’s normally handled with a bit more discretion.  This smacks of desperation.

I’ve interviewed both Mahoney and Frank Guinta on TEMS in the past.  Both would make a much better Representative than the Milk Carton Democrat currently occupying the seat.  Apparently, though, the New Hampshire Democratic Party has made its endorsement in the race.

When desperation sets in, anything is possible. “The Nastys” will only get worse as Nov approaches.

Hey, was there also a paid endorsement from Craxine Waters in that mailer?

Porter has been freaked out since she got some heat in the fake “town halls” over ObamunistCare. Mahoney will likely beat her.

Man, that is one homely photo of Carol “Che” Porter.

As a safety measure, Virginia has passed a law that prohibits Democrat voters above the 3rd floor in multi-story buildings, ledges, towers, and any structure from which one could leap beginning 6:00 pm Nov 2, and extending for 60 days thereafter.

Purely a life-saving precaution.

This smacks of desperation.

Like WWE on a fake “bouncy” stage, and the Hulk is about to jump on Jesse Ventura!

These ads are a waste of money. My dog is polling higher that Shea-Porker these days.

Though, I’m going with Rich Ashooh in the primary.

FTA: One claims that while Mahoney says he opposed the Wall Street bailout, he actually profited from it.

If this is the measure of a candidate, then about half of the country including the UAW, GM, Ford, and all their suppliers and dependents are also guilty.

How many democratics opposed the President George W. Bush tax cuts, but ‘profited from them’? All silliness.

I got both of those mailers yesterday as well as a third one that I threw away without looking at too closely. They were pretty vicious and at first I thought the debate had turned Guinta away from his No Mud Slinging in the Primary philosophy. Then I saw who had paid for the mailers.

Ed, have you seen the commercial that Paul Hodes has running of him at a pie eating contest? It’s shameless for even a Democrat.

He describes himself as a ‘conservative’ and laments all the taxing and spending ‘they in Washington’ have done. Maybe he and Shea Porter have been hiding out together in the same backwoods cabin for the past two years.

The left has become more impertinent than ever. For this they will be punished mightily in Nov. and after.

The populace has had enough. Decency is in retreat from all quarters but they expedited its decline exponentially.

They have good reason to be desperate.

UPDATE: – I got a THIRD mailer attacking Mahoney today.

However – something smells fishy here to me. It’s too obvious – are they trying a reverse psychology rope-a-dope?

IMHO Frank Guinta is the best candidate. A solid conservative and a proven record. He went to court to fight for a spending cap for the city of Manchester when the libs and the unions tried to stop it. The judge was impressed by the fact that a city mayor personally came to court to fight for something.

Mahoney has been smearing Guinta for the past few weeks. He has a campaign team of known sleaze merchants. I think the Dms WANT Mahoney – a rich elitist who is FOR AMNESTY and gave money to Massachusetts Dems.

Has there been a poll on Shea-Porter lately, I haven’t seen one.

They ran polls on Levy Johnston and Andy Griffith in the past week, for pete’s sake. You would think they would run a poll on someone who is actually running for office?

“Real” conservative Tea Partiers and the Democratic Party working to destroy the NH GOP together. Thanks Ovide fans. Another decade in the wilderness for the NH GOP if Kelly Ayotte goes down.

Bill O’Reilly … in drag.

Kelley’s not going to go down. She’s going to win. Hodes has been nothing but a disaster and so has Shea-Porter.

I was going to say: When did O’Reily establish residency in New Hampshire? I can’t believe he’d leave the O’Reilly Factor to run for the U.S. Senate.

We’re seeing much the same thing here in Wisconsin, with the lefty blogs openly calling for their followers to vote for certain candidates in the GOP primary they feel (and in one case, know) they can beat. The kicker is that, outside any county partisan offices, roughly 75% of Democrats in Wisconsin have no substantial state/federal primary (beyond, perhaps, lieutenant governor) to vote in.

steveegg on September 9, 2010 at 11:05 PM

This is how the Democrats steered the candidacy of John McCain! They encouraged their voters, in states where party was not a prerequisite for voting in a primary, to vote for McCain. Romney would have cleaned the floor with Obama and that really scared the Dems! Their underhanded politics do not go away!
