Carville shop poll shows GOP up 7 on generic Congressional ballot
posted at 11:36 am on September 9, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Democracy Corps released the results of its latest survey last night and found much the same as almost all other pollsters — with the exception of Gallup in odd-numbered weeks, of course. On a generic Congressional ballot among registered voters, the GOP leads by six points, 48/42, and among likely voters, seven point at 49/42. But Democrats do lead in one select group — those least likely to vote, which gives them a 47/40 edge in Congressional balloting.
This poll uses an odd device of “warmth” on issues of policy and personalities, with the warmer numbers being positive, on a scale of 100. The results are not quite as clear-cut as a binary approve/disapprove choice would be, but still interesting. Among likely voters, the GOP gets a 44.6 warmth rating, edging the Democrats with their 43.8 rating. Obama narrowly outperforms both at 48.2, but take a look at how others managed:
- The NRA: 57.1
- Pro-life groups: 50.1
- Tea Party movement: 46.3
And these:
- State of the economy: 30.2
- ObamaCare: 37.1
Given that these are the two biggest issues coming into the midterms, it is not difficult to discern why Democrats are facing such a tough cycle. Calling Republicans names and screeching about George W. Bush isn’t going to help much, if at all.
The die is all but cast in this election, according to the data. Of the 42% that say they will vote Democrat, only 16 points of that total comprise voters willing to change their mind. On the other side, only 14 points of the 49% supporting the GOP are willing to reconsider their vote. The next eight weeks will fight only in the margins, with over two-thirds of all voters already firm in their choice.
For those looking to change their minds, Democrats look to be more at risk on the issues:
- Economy – Republicans lead 48/36
- “On your side” – Rep, 41/37
- Government spending – Rep, 49/31
- Federal deficit – Rep, 50/32
On the economy, Democrats face a huge perception problem. Sixty-two percent believe that the economy has hit bottom and is not improving or hasn’t yet hit bottom. Only 34% think that the economy has begun improving at all. Even among drop-off voters, that number is still only 37%. Back to likely voters, 53% of them believe that Obama has run up record deficits without showing any improvement in the economy, while only 40% buy the argument that Obama prevented an even worse financial catastrophe.
The catastrophe for Democrats appears to be coming ever closer. They can’t say that James Carville’s Democracy Corps didn’t warn them.

Carville will be the one who first says “Put Hillary in and take Obama out.” It’s coming.

Obviously James has to stop letting Mary get on the computer and accessing the polling data files. Surely the Democracy Corps poll can’t be right and Gallup can’t be wrong…

Nobody can call Carville a Republican stooge who is cooking the books. Does anyone else think he is thinking a Hillary 2012 run in the primaries?

I’m sure he and Billy Jeff have already had ……the talk.

Oh no doubt. I don’t know if she will. But one would have to be a fool to think that hasn’t been considered and discussed.

So, pro-life, pro-gun groups are the most popular in America. But David Frum says we need to dump these two issues because the bobos, yuppies and guppies will never vote for us. What shall we ever do!

I’m going to take all the polls with a grain of salt. If I had to decipher what they mean I would lose my mind. Too many ups and downs for me.

Dogs are warm, you want to pet them, maybe use them as a foot warmer on cold days. I’m surprised PBHO isn’t more popular because of that.

I don’t think David Frum and his ilk care about winning; they just care about showing conservatives their proper place in the GOP, in the back of the bus.

I’ve noticed something.
I tried 3x (just now) to include a link to a CNN story about the Military burning bibles that were sent to Afghanistan and it apparently wouldn’t let me include the link. Is there a reason for that?

Wonder what the warmth rating is for George W. Bush?

Now is not the time to let up. For the first time in recent memory, we have a real chance to put real conservatives in power (or force the more conservative party to lurch to the right). The conservative issues are not, and have never been, losers. It’s just that the coastal news media pressure and GOP polititians residing in Washington make it seem that way to the RNC leadership.
My contribution to Michele Bachmann goes out today.

Now that she has framed the debt as a national security issue there can be no doubt she is priming the pump for a play. As Secretary of State and a former senator she of course has garnered the unique expierience neccessary to deal with this situation.

Re Hillary, the Bamster will have to move quickly next year if he wants to cut off a primary challenge by Hil, by officially bringing her on as his VP candidate. Will she accept? Will Joke BiteMe go quietly into the night for Bammie’s greater glory?
slickwillie2001 on September 9, 2010 at 4:30 PM
I think Hillary looks so much weaker after being part and parcel of this administration. I know that is against conventional wisdom and all but, what exactly has she done that is any better than what Obama has done? She stood by as he apologized and she said nothing.
Maybe she can redeem herself by 2016 but I don’t see even most Dems following anyone from this administration.
And Obama has almost completely rehabilitated Bush.
It is clear Bush was not nearly so bad as Obama and the rest claimed or they would not have kept so many of his policies.
I hope Hillary runs. But I don’t feel threatened.
What I do feel threatened by is a lack of serious Republican leaders.
None of them seem Presidential to me yet. Palin has been great as a fly in the ointment but she is not an executive and the only job she has had as an executive the opposition succeeded in driving her out. That isn’t a strong leader.
I’ve never really liked Gingrich… Mitt has Masscare hanging around his ankle, and he stirs up Southern angst. Haley Barbour impresses me, but he doesn’t wear well, I mean I get tired of hearing him. Jindahl… maybe I guess. Huck, nope he’s a dope.
Where is our leader? We haven’t needed one while the Tea Party got up and going but now I’m beginning to want a leader. A clear, honorable voice with a plan that works.
Some combination of Palin’s appeal and Mitt’s competence without the baggage. I wish I could get behind Palin like so many do, but just agreeing with her isn’t enough, I don’t think she can do the job.

Federal spending and deficit. This tells me nobody is buying Obama’s I inherited this mess. Its pretty clear this is now his deficit. The more he repeats his 2008 campaign speeches 2 years into his Presidency the more ridiculous he looks.
Your in “D” Obama but we are deeper in the ditch and you got us stuck in the mud and your just spinning your wheels.
cubbieblue25 on September 9, 2010 at 7:50 PM
It’s early, we don’t need a national leader for the midterms. Bammie is so desperate for someone to attack that he went after Boehner today. Until we identify our 2012 nominee he has no one to personalize-polarize-etc. He looks foolish by continuing the attacks on President George W. Bush. Let’s leave them targetless a while longer.
