Johnson requested scholarship money be sent directly to family members

posted at 10:55 am on September 8, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Credit the Dallas Morning News for its determination to get to the bottom of the scandal surrounding Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) and the nepotism of her CBC scholarship awards.  After they exposed the fact that Johnson had broken the rules set out by the Congressional Black Caucus that barred relatives from receiving scholarships, Johnson attempted to parry that charge by claiming she had nothing to do with selecting the recipients and had left that to aides.  According to letters obtained by the Morning News, however, Johnson was not only involved in the decision to give the money to her family members, she also personally intervened to make sure they literally received it, instead of their schools:

Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson apparently asked the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to send scholarship checks directly to her two grandsons and two great-nephews, rather than to their colleges.

Johnson has insisted repeatedly that she left scholarship decisions to aides.

But two letters she sent the foundation from 2006 undermine claims that she wasn’t involved in obtaining $31,000 for her relatives and two other ineligible recipients.

D’oh! Never leave a paper trail, Rep. Johnson.  Enterprising reporters like Todd Gillman and Christy Hoppe will eventually come along to follow the money back to its source — or, in this case, her Republican challenger, Stephen Broden.  Not only did Johnson sign the letters, she sent them from her Dallas office fax machine, and on House letterhead.  That may be enough to get the House Ethics Committee interested in Johnson’s attempt to fund her grandchildren’s education through a charity dodge.

This also should shine a spotlight on the CBC, too.  Didn’t anyone think it odd to get a request to redirect scholarship money from the school to the student?  The checks had already been sent out to the college, Texas Christian University.  Johnson’s letter noted that she had enclosed those originals and requested that they be rewritten to be paid to the students individually.  Usually, although not always, charity scholarships get paid to the schools, which then apply them to the tuition and expenses of the individual students, rather than to the students themselves.

Johnson was a lot more involved in these decisions than she admitted.  In fact, it appears that Johnson has been lying about this from the moment it got reported by the Morning News and picked up around the country.  Her constituents deserve better.

Update: Johnson’s opponent is Stephen Broden, not Brody, as I initially wrote.  I’ve fixed it above.

Anyone know the source of the funds that the CBC distributes for scholarships?

Does the word “shakedown” have any meaning?

Maybe that should be “Roasting Chickens”.

Oh, and she also has a scheme going with DFW airport if i remember right (possibly LoveField) where she and other African Americans can be the minority partner that’s required for a business to open in the airport. The minority partner doesn’t do anything except be a token African American and rake in the money, and the deal is, you have to be a politically connected African american to get in on the scam.

South Dallas has a long history of corruption, i hate to say it, but as long as she’s black, she’ll be re-elected.

clearbluesky on September 8, 2010

You’re probably right but the district isn’t only South Dallas. It encompasses a number of refurbished areas with a rather diverse community overall. The main problem is apathy, which is hard to believe in the current political climate. Also, the Republican running is nearly invisible. Actually I think he borrowed Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak.

Also, the Dallas mayor won a good number of votes in South Dallas a couple of years ago. The only way for Johnson to get unseated is for another campaign to catch fire and that just isn’t happening right now.

Contrary to Johnson’s statement in the Dallas Morning News on September 3rd that she has not “dwelled on figuring out how to give my grandchildren $1,000 a year” she apparently has done exactly that.

Notice the snootiness–it’s only $1,000 a year. Never mind all the working families who would love to have $1,000 to help with school expenses. These people are just evil.

DrMagnolias on September 8, 2010 at 12:00 PM

The Republican is Stephen Broden and he’s actually doing pretty good believe it or not, i’ve seen lots of signs for him around.

Here’s a link to Brodens’ site for anyone interested.

clearbluesky on September 8, 2010 at 12:01 PM

Stephen Broden is the Republican who is running against Democrat Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson.

Learn more about Stephen Broden’s campaign web site at:
http://www.brodenforcongress.com/

Based on his website, it looks like Pastor Broden could be a very strong candidate in this district.

Pastor Broden has been actively involved in the pro-life movement since 1983 and is the chief spokesperson for the black pro-life movement in Dallas.

But Stephen Broden is going to need some help with fundraising for his campaign.

According to the FEC.gov website as of 6/30/10:

Stephen Broden had $44,742 Cash on Hand

Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson had $260,357 Cash on Hand

http://www.fec.gov/DisclosureSearch/HSRefreshCandList.do?category=disH&stateName=TX&congressId=30&election_yr=2010

It will be very interesting to see if Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson is on the list of candidates who Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee will be funding or if the Democrats are ready to decide that their money is better spent on less corrupt candidates. Journalists should be asking Democrat leaders which list Rep. Johnson is on.

Broden isn’t given much of a chance in the national media…but something is stirring in TX 30. I have been on the fringe forever, but do a lot of work in south Dallas. The feel is different than during other elections.

The reps usually run a minority here, but this time Broden grabbed the title of sacrificial lamb without much help. He is really a TEA party kind of guy, and don’t let the pastor part cloud your judgment. He is not a Jackson or Sharpton.

Hard to say at this point. EBJ told CNN she could not find the documents. They may have come from some one in her office. If she wasn’t lying to Cooper, the paranoia bug may be biting her hard now.

“D” Magazine has picked up on the story and the Texas GOP has copies of the letters:

PDF

If the Observer, or local black paper goes after this (then the local stations would have to), she may get to move back to Dallas permanently. A lot of Hispanics have moved into this district and not all of the whites here are Pelosi-like leftists.

I thought this story may grow legs a while back, more so than the Love Field concessions. It started small but is something that the majority of her constituents can understand. A lot of them could really use these kinds of scholarships.

clearbluesky on September 8, 2010 at 1:21 PM

They would have wanted the checks made out directly to the kids if their tuition and expenses had already been paid, so that they did not owe any additional money to the university. It would be interesting to know what other scholarships/grants her relatives received.

mbs on September 8, 2010 at 1:29 PM

The DMN needs to keep digging. I’ll bet Johnson’s grandkids got full rides at TCU and didn’t even need the scholarships. That’s why she didn’t want the money going to the school. She figured out a way to get CBCF money into her own pocket.

By the way, the biggest source of funding for the CBCF over the last 10 years or so was Fannie Mae. I think if someone really wants to dig hard they will find that Fannie Mae was essentially bribing Black Caucus members through the Foundation’s “scholarships” and other programs. That’s the real reason they were all such big defenders of Fannie.

Since I am not black, my stepson, or sister, was not eligible for the scholarships. Even though, according to the demographics of the district, whites are the minority, go figure. The demographics were changing until Katrina came along and one group got a boost that hasn’t gone home. Well, there is always redistricting to look forward to.

I am not sure if Hispanics are eligible for these scholarships, but if a document turns up where a Hispanic was turned down while EBJ’s favored was given them, it might change the game.

And if it comes out that Hispanics are not eligible for these scholarships, there will be a lot of folks with dark skin wondering why.

slickwillie2001 on September 8, 2010 at 2:40 PM

If you remember, the original reason for directing the money to her grandsons was because there were no other qualified applicants. Wrong. There is a letter sent to a student who requested the scholarship that qualified and the reason she was denied the scholarship was there were too many qualified students and choices had to be made.

Sue on September 8, 2010 at 11:34 AM

Thanks Sue, that answers the question I had and the angle they should pursue. This thief originally said there were no other qualified applicants, making her a thief and a liar. Imagine the CBC uproar if a white congresscritter had deprived a deserving scholarship applicant of needed funds.

Voting Rep. Johnson out of office in 55 days is the fastest way to get her out of Congress and to teach a lesson to any other Congresspeople who might be tempted by corruption.

Since you live in her district, please do what you can to let your neighbors know about this scandal. And encourage your neighbors to learn more about Stephen Broden’s campaign.

Once you start talking about this election, you will be surprised how many people will agree with you.

If you are concerned that other people might disagree with you, an easy way to start the conversation is to ask them if they know anything about either the Rep. Johnson scandal or Stephen Broden’s campaign.

Working hard to help candidates in our local districts is the best way for us to clean the House and the Senate in 2010.

Pastor Broden is also one of the pastors who was up on stage with Glenn Beck on 08/28 at the Restore Honor rally. I agree, if more people in the district are made aware of his commitment to the AA community, as well as his ethics, he has a real chance to oust Ms. Johnson.

But if more people in her district are made aware of the fact that these scholarships went to out-of-district students who are related to Ms. Johnson instead of to students within her district, they won’t take too kindly to that news.

All you have to do is click to vote for Stephen Broden to help him raise money.

Stephen Broden is in the lead in the Ten Buck Friday race right now with 1437 votes (32.88%)

But Broden has another candidate running close behind with 1356 votes (31.02%)

One on each side. The western one missed us by a little over a mile. The eastern one caught Seagoville.

In a real world yes, but in Dallas, she brings home pleanty of “Free Shit”, they will simply see it as her getting some “Free Shit” for herself, her seat is safe. It’s simple Democrat politics, whomever delivers the most “Free Shit” wins…

M-14 2go on September 8, 2010 at 8:49 PM

Nope, she isn’t even good enough to bring stuff back to her district.

Unfortunately this little song and dance usually works. It’s especially successful in gerrymandered districts.

Cindy Munford on September 8, 2010 at 12:52 PM

Sounds like a pretty strong argument for re-districting then, wouldn’t it?

It’s one of those little things that mean so much that are going to leave the Dems wrecked even worse in 2012: The national elections will determine who loses their job this year. Those state elections that are swinging heavily towards the GOP this year will determine, in many places, who loses their job in 2012…

Eddie may get re-elected in 2010, but if the Texas legislature acts wisely, she can be re-districted out in 2012.

What’s the story on Johnson’s opponent, Stephen Broden?

maverick muse on September 9, 2010 at 8:44 AM

WHY I’M RUNNING

I am running for Congress because of my deep concern over the direction our country is taking — away from the conservative Constitutional founding principles which made this nation great, and rapidly toward Western European socialism — which will make us weaker, less prosperous, less safe and less free. We cannot allow two more years of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House or irreparable harm will be done to our country. I am the first conservative candidate from the 30th District who can actually defeat the incumbent, and she must be defeated this year. I will do so!

With regard to the issues, I want to stop the tyranny of the liberal-progressive majority in Washington D.C. Individual issues in the traditional sense, while important (because they are where votes in Congress play out), are not at the core my candidacy; nor are they as telling as one’s fundamental values and beliefs. My candidacy is about conservative, Constitutional principles of limited government, free enterprise, individual responsibility, personal freedom and national security. Because my guiding principle, my stand on individual issues will be correct. Every vote, on every issue, must be weighed against the unchanging original intent of the framers of our Constitution with respect to the limited role of our federal government.

To do this, I need help. Your help in volunteering your time and efforts to the campaign would be deeply appreciated.

Pastor Stephan Broder has an impeccable biographical preparation for a strong conservative Congressman.

BIOGRAPHY

Community Leader

Stephen Broden has deep roots in District 30, and has lived in the Dallas area for over 30 years. He is an outspoken advocate in the Fair Park and South Dallas areas for economic opportunity, quality education, and respect for life. He is a frequent speaker at Tea Party Rallies advocating a return to Constitutional principles in government and a respect for the Judeo-Christian values underlying the founding of our nation. He supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms and the Tenth Amendment respect for states’ rights.

Stephen Broden founded the Fair Park Bible Fellowship Church in 1987, and continues serving that community-based church today as Senior Pastor. He also serves as President of the Fair Park Friendship Center which is a community-centered gathering place for groups such as the Boy Scouts and the Girls’ Club, and also is a community resource center offering hands-on assistance to surrounding area families. The Friendship Center offers a variety of practical services including a clothing store and back-to-school rally where children from neighborhood families are provided with donated school supplies.

Family counseling and other programs are also offered through the Friendship Center, which has served its community by offering family-supporting services for the last twenty-two years.

Pastor Broden has been actively involved in the pro-life movement since 1983 and is the chief spokesperson for the black pro-life movement in Dallas.

Business Background

Stephen’s business background includes ten years in the private sector at Atlantic-Richfield Company in Human Resources. He has been a business owner of several self-serve car-wash facilities, and has also worked as a newscaster, disc jockey and radio broadcaster. Currently he works as a co-host on a radio talk show on KSKY, 660 AM, Life and Liberty, and as a radio broadcaster of One-Minute “thought of the day” commentaries on that station.

Education

Stephen Broden graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor and then a Master of Arts degree in Communication, and later studied at the Dallas Theological Seminary where he received a Master of Arts in Bible Studies.

Family and Personal Background

Stephen is married to Donna W. Broden, and they have three children, Jamaal 29, Maia 27, and Stephenie 22.

He also:

* Served as an Adjunct Professor at Dallas Baptist University from 1990-1992
* Serves as President of the African American Alumni Association Executive Committee
* Is a founder of Ebony Berean, an organization with a mission to inform African-American Pastors of the “Cultural Wars”

This guy puts Obama’s claim to fame as a community organizer in the dump.

exas District 30 of the United States House of Representatives serves parts of central Dallas (including the downtown and uptown areas), west Dallas, and east Dallas, and all of south Dallas plus the southern suburbs south to the boundary of Dallas County.

The boundaries of District 30 are shown on the map (link).

Eddie Bernice Johnson has represented the district since its creation in 1993.

She is the most liberal, tax and spend congressperson from Texas. She has done nothing to help District 30 participate in the growth and success that the rest of Texas has enjoyed.

She has consistently voted for:

Job-Killing Higher Taxes and Regulation

Government Handouts and Bailouts

Big Government Control of Health Care

Abortion (she now wants taxpayers to pay for)

Status Quo Public Education

great video address by Stephen Broden

Stephen Broden on engagement with the Tea Party to examine what is happening, tyranny, and to prevent this administration from changing this nation according to Saul Alinsky principles that deny liberty and freedom, our founding principles. LIMIT the government according to our Constitution.

We need to be good stewards. We’ve been fat and sassy. The foxes are in the hen house. Out of uneasiness comes awakening.

Challenge of our response it to target and focus our movement to resist and repel what the liberal Left is doing to us. We do that when we are informed and educated.

Our leaders must have the strategy to rescue our nation with our founding principles, not only fiscal conservatism but appreciative of our traditional American Christian-Judeo values.

/Recall that Fred Thompson’s potus campaign was FOUNDING PRINCIPLES.

Stephen Broden’s “I am worthy” video seems to be coded as a “private” video, which is probably why people are having trouble accessing it.

If you are associated with the campaign, please change the setting of the video so we can all see it. It sounds great!
